For anyone who is struggling with a mac and a window laptop to connect it together, I hope this comment can help you out. Try deleting the logitech+ app on macbook, downloading again, and then turn on the firewall. On the option of the firewall settings, choose allow logitech+ incoming connections. I struggled 4 hours w/ that thing and don’t want you to deal w/ it.
I started using Synergy at work in 2011. We had a Windows desktop for all the business apps, and a Linux workstation for the development, testing, running virtual machines, etc. It works great for us. Around 2016 we got MacBooks for testing on those as well, but we didn't get an additional monitor, we use the MacBook display directly. Adding the Mac as a third device was easy. Its great not needing to use that crappy Mac keyboard. Also, Synergy converted its code from opensource to proprietary sometime between 2012 and 2016. Synergy started charging money for the software. However, the original opensource code was branched to form Barrier. Barrier remains opensource. Barrier does not have quite as many features, but all the keyboard/mouse functionality is there. It just lacks the "nice-to-haves" like being able to drag and drop files between the machines, or transfer files.
Hi guys tech noob here. i want this same set up but my work laptop restrict me from downloading any apps - is there any way around this? I basically have two separate laptops connected to their own monitors (so two laptops and two monitors in total). I wanted to use the same mouse and keyboard for both without having to always click a button to tell the system I now want to type on the second laptop. Etc. Any suggestions that can override the need to download an app?
I've been searching all over how to do this and even went to "The Geek Squad" and they could not help me. You did beyond a phenomenal job in explaining the process! Thank you so much!
I use Synergy to share single keyboard/mouse with 2 PC and 1 Mac (and sometimes Raspberry Pi as well). I DON'T recommend audio splitter! Instead, use the headphone out of mac to line in of PC, and then enable monitoring in windows audio. The better solution would be to use a simple audio mixer like Behringer, which costs around $80+, but well worth the price.
The audio mixer is very useful here. Not just to make fast adjustments to the volume of each, but also in sound clarity. Due to the capacitance/inductance of having the output stage of two sources being connected together, it does weird things with the frequency response. Imagine a multi-band equalizer where someone decides to just crank one way up, and another one way low, but the rest are all in the middle. It generally sounds muffled but may have prominent high pitch sounds that are not desirable.
1:57 You can't merge two outputs like this. This is like shorting. One driver could be trying to raise the voltage (that's how speaker outputs work, by dialing voltage up and down at audible frequencies) and the other could be actively trying to pull it low. This causes a tug of war between the two and they may even burn each other off. You have to use a mux chip to do this properly. There could be some product that uses a mux chip, use that instead.
But in this case server needs to be always on or at least on when you want to use second PC. I recently dealt with this problem myself but I had an added computer of my significant other who could also connect to the dock. I solved it using a KVM (usb only). Set up 2 Monitors 1 Dell Docking station ( For any laptop to come and use desk) 1 Desktop PC 1 KVM switch Desk top and Docking station connected to both monitors in independent inputs. They both connect the USB to the KVM and all my USB peripherals are connected to the KVM ( Keyboard, Mouse, Headphone USB dongle). I opted not to go for a more fancy KVM with HDMI multiplexing since the monitors had plenty of inputs and getting the best performance for the video output requires more high end KVMs. Whenever I adopt some speakers on the desk I will incorporate the 3.3mm Jack splitter or find alternative solution. Maybe with more high end KVM if I don’t need to use at same time.
Thanks for helping me decide on a monitor. I just got an imac mini, so I needed a good monitor to use for the mini and my pc. It's nice to see someone actually showing it in action for a change. Once again, thanks :). BTW Synergy is awesome as well, as it allows you to copy/paste between both machines
Spilt screen option question. Can you switch between two computers displaying at the same time to either one? You are displaying Mac and PC, can u do Mac only, then switch to PC only, and so on? Thx 😊
This was sooo helpful. Thank you for posting this. Synergy was way cheaper and easier to use than a keyboard that you need to click the button every time to switch.
If you’re using an LG monitor, they have a program called Dual Controller. It lets you manage preset window layouts and you can do everything synergy does.
I know it's a pretty old video, but maybe I'll get a answer. When using this synergy and the PC is the server, are mouse and keyboard working for the macbook when the PC is off or does it always have to be turned on? Btw great video
Microsoft's Mouse without Borders works much the same as Synergy...but it's free. I have an MX Keys and MX3 connected by bluetooth to both my work laptop and personal PC. They switch to whichever monitor you are moving to. You can also cut and paste, etc between devices.

How would I set it up so that I can use a PC to display on two monitors and then switch to MAC to display on those same two monitors? Instead of having one on each side.
My question is: in case you want to use the mouse on the mac monitor to migrate to the monitor connected to windows, is it necessary that the application that recognizes such monitors can always be connected to the internet? In case you don't have internet access, can you still migrate from one monitor to the other?
if you plug in keyboard/mouse/other usb peripherals to the dock, how does the laptop and desktop pc share them? what cable goes from dock to PC to use all the USB stuff? and what about ethernet cable?
Logitech Options allows you to use the same keyboard and mouse on 2 computers, but they have to be on the same network. If you are using a VPN on one computer (e.g., a work computer using VPN to log into a work network), then the computers are no longer on the same network and you can't share. I expect Synergy has the same issue, no?
But how does it all work though ? Can I drag and drop things from the PC to the Mac ? Or like, if I open a window on the PC (like File Explorer or some browser), can I drag it to the Mac and so on ?
Instead of a Female to 2-Male Y-Splitter, can I use a Male to 2-Female splitter? My laptop and desktop computer are far apart. The included 6 feet cable is not long enough. My only other option is to use two 3.5mm extension cables, which drives up the price significantly.
Hope you can help me. I recently bought the Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 Ultrawide. I have it connected to my MacBook Pro M1 13" through a CalDigit TS4 dock. Thunderbolt from Mac to dock, display-port cable from dock to screen. My problem is, when I'm doing my online seminars, I use MS Teams. I wish to split my screen (two 27" screens in effect), one screen showing my participants, and the other screen showing the content e.g. my virtual white board which I wish to share with the group. The problem is the MacBook Pro M1 won't support two screens apparently, something I only found out later. Do you know how I can manage this? I can't even use the Macbook screen at the same time. If I don't put in in clam-shell mode, the Samsung won't receive the content from my Mac. Please help 🙏
I’m a lifelong Mac user but I have my first custom PC workstation on the way. My question: If I want to limp my M1 Mac along while I see about fully migrating to the PC, do I use the Mac as the server and use the apple keyboard as my input for both devices while making my keyboardless, mouseless PC the client or should I get a PC keyboard and make the PC the server? I’m told by synergy that though a keyboard and mouse are detected across both platforms that a Wacom tablet will not have the same cross platform functionality. Luckily I have two tablets but I may only plug it into the PC since that will become my serious new workstation. Thanks for any advice you can lend. Great video BTW.
This seems pretty neat. A question though: What if at any point you want to focus 100% on what's going on in one of the 2 devices? Is there a quick way to just switch to 'Full screen' for just one of them?
Thank you for your video ! I do not understand how you can connect your mouse and keyboard to both pc and macbook ? Could you please show us a photo of the detailed cable management of your PC and your dock ? that would be very helpfull
There is a risk using an audio splitter cable to merge signals. There is a risk for the output on one device to blow the output on the other device. The splitter is meant to split output for two inputs, not to connect two outputs. I would recommend an active mixer, to avoid the risk of breaking the line output amplifiers. A line output typically has low impedance, designed to be connected to an input with higher impedance. If you connect to another low impedance device, you will increase the stress on the output amplifier increasing risk of blowing it. There are commonly added designs to make them more fool proof, in case of wrong connection, but don't trust on that to save you forever or every time.
Exactly that's what I wanted say. It is a bad idea to use that splitter cable as a mixer. That's why the volume drops, because the ouputs loading each other.
Do you have any recommendations for a audio interface that can be used to connect the speakers and microphone to both pc and mac and have them switch between devices easily?
I have a single monitor with 2 macs that I want to switch inputs and video input over depending on the mac that I'm working on. Is there a way I can do this seamlessly with synergy?
When Synergy worked, it was awesome. When it failed (it kept giving me a firewall error despite not changing anything in my network) and now is useless. One recommendation they provide is to uninstall then reinstall the software from scratch. Now if fails based on saying that I don't have a compatible OS. I have given up...
is there any solution to remap keyboard functions like windows CTRL+ALT vs mac CMD+OPTION? It confuses me a lot when I'm switching between the two of them
Do you have a solution for splitting multiple usb devices between a Mac and a pc? I do have a basic 4 port hub split between 2 computers. In order to expand the 4 port hub I was going to daisy chain additional hubs behind it so that when switching the automagic transfer of 10+ usb devices, this would include my digital mixer, I use the usb interface for the sound and would prefer that it switches between both Mac and PC rather than using a separate audio cable.
For the split screen function, is that simply part of the monitor functions or did u have to install any software? I want to do the same with my work PC and my personal mac but i cannot install any software on my work pc. I am just asking about the monitor, I do have 2 mouses/keyboards. Thanks
Hi... I have a question. You have two systems on the screen at the same time. One left one right. You would never be "in front" like directly in front of your main work. It would always be either left or right to you. Is that a problem for you? It probably depends on what work you are doing. Would you "shift" your chair to look directly into one of the sides and have the other side as a secondary monitor? If your focus main task is on the left you would probably have to look slight angled into that side and have the other side as a secondary. How do you manage that with a screen that large and displaying tow sources at once?
Not having the stuff you work on right in front is a show stopper, depending on what you work on, for example programming, reading, and writing intensely. When I had 2 24inch monitor setup, I kept one right in front for the main tasks and the 2nd monitor on the side. Using a 34 inch single monitor now.
Some of these apps through the monitors I’ve seen allow for different size split screen even like one being the full screen and the secondary being top right corner or something and with quick commands being able to switch it. Or have only one show or go back to the split screen
Some of these apps through the monitors I’ve seen allow for different size split screen even like one being the full screen and the secondary being top right corner or something and with quick commands being able to switch it. Or have only one show or go back to the split screen
I'd been doing that with multiple 24" monitors for years. Windows on one side, Linux on the other side. I sometimes turn my chair slightly, mostly when using web conferencing or watching videos, or when I can just focus on one machine for a while on a task. Often though, I just sit straight forward, and turn my head slightly because frequent communication (Teams/Outlook) requires me to keep checking on the WIndows machine. When remote work started, I got four monitors. I originally had Windows on the two on the left (bottom and top) with Linux on the right, as that is what I was used to with dual monitors for the previous six years. But then I was finding I was heavily relying on the two bottom monitors. So I switched the inputs and put Windows on the top two monitors and Linux on the bottom two. That's been much better for me because I get to use the Linux workstation more effectively with the two bottom screens. For me it's much more effective to just move my attention to left or right monitor rather than switching between full-screen apps. My upper monitors work well for keeping MS Teams always on top since team communication is expected to be quick responses.
Now that is has been 3 years, has anything changed? I'm planning to have a similar set up and wondering if you have discovered new tech to accomplish this. Thank you!
If you have two computers sharing one monitor, is it possible to share the screen of both computers using a screen sharing tool like team viewer or each computer needs to start it’s own session?
Great Video! Couple questions... Instead of a monitor will this work with one smart TV? And, will this work with 2 Windows PC's on one smart TV? Thanks!
I can’t image what if your room equipped with our special chair workstation recline cockpit for multi screens …. Adding not only interesting points but also much more comfortable and more impressive and immersive…
This is cool, but if you need to use only one pc you need to power on both computers, because without server PC you can't share the mouse and keyboard with the other PC. I mean, with macbook you can use the trackpad, sure. But if you have a PC and an iMAC or simply 2 PC, is better to have a multidevice mouse and keyboard
Can you show me the back of the dock after you have it completely setup? I'm trying to solve sharing an Opal C1 webcam between two laptops a m1 MacBook Pro and a T-14 Lenovo. Whichever one is thunderbolt 4 connected as the main host on the dock the other machine doesn't recognize any of the other usb plug-ins.
Hey Jesse....I followed your set up with the exception of the pre amp and seem to be having a feedback static issue. Do I need to incorporate a pre amp? Thanks
Unfortunately, you can not have the screen of the 2nd PC into the monitor of the 1st PC as you can do with the MULTIPLICITY 4 of STARDOCK. This software is 2 PC with 1 Keyboard, Mouse & Monitor. Thanks for the useful video.
PBP doesn’t affect how synergy works in that it will work exactly the same with separate monitors each connected to a separate computer. It will also work with 3 or more computers, multi monitor setups and different operating systems.
you mention a server for synergy.. but you don't explain which is what? (device) also it's very unpracticle to have a need for a server (which must be on to function).. Because at times you have only one of the two devices on, instead of both. (e.g. the laptop is off, the desktop is on, or vice versa). An automatic way, to detect 2 or one device, and make them connect when needed is way more convenient. (not sure if synergy has that "smartness")
Thanks for the instructions! What about limitations? Screen Resolutions and / or Framerates? As Synergy is using WIFI I guess there is also a measureable latency? So i would expect it´s not working in gaming scenarios, right? Thank you!
I use barrier which is a free version and it works great, latency is not a problem for me. Also if it is a issue just have your gaming pc as the main host and not the client.
Do you think using Synergy would pose a problem for ppl if they use a work computer and a personal computer the same time? Especially if the company is very strict on security protection?
Hi Jesse! I have a macbook pro 2019 16 inch and I want to know which wide monitor as my external monitor I can use with my macbook pro. Please let me know! Thank you!
Alternatively you can buy a DP KVM Switch for around $50. Ugreen do a really good one. (Also HDMI) You plug your keyboard/mouse dongle into the USB ports in the front. HDMI/DP in the back. And then just press a button to switch between computers. This way you don't need to have a server running at all times. I have my MacBook connected to a dock. Then from the dock into the DP Switch. My PC into the DP switch. And then the Switch into my monitor (LG 38 ultrawide) I also have a USB drive in the switch as well. So I can quickly transfer files between computers if I need to. The UGreen is particular good because it does 8k at 60mhz, or 4k at 240hz. Which is great as my monitor does 166 at 4k 1600p. Also HDR as well... Using the switch is the ONLY way to use my K100 AIR from Corsair on BOTH my computers. I simply plug the Corsair into the switch, and then install the software on both Mac and the PC. This way I have full functionality of the software, macros and lighting. As far as each PC is concerned. It's as though you are connecting/disconnecting the USB. My Mac complains about ejecting the USB drive, but hey. You can silence that if you need to. You don't have to use UGreen, but if you want to use something like a Corsair/Logitech RGB keyboard you will need a POWERED version.
Is this video still modern? I need this setup with my Macbook Pro 16" M1, and my M2 Mini , and my gaming PC with one monitor. I tried a KVM switch and HATE it. The delay and cable mess is terrible. I admit, I am not experienced in this design, so any help is very appreciated. My PC is gaming, 165HZ Samsung monitor ultrawide 4k.
question regarding the mouse moving screen to screen like synergy.. how else can you move the mouse/keyboard from screens? You clicked your mouse to switch, what are other options? I’ve only found the kvm option by clicking on my monitor and have the transfer happen… but no smooth screen to screen transfer
I will be using a pc laptop, a MacBook Air, 2- 27” monitors, 1 mouse and 1 keyboard and Synergy. I want to sometimes use the use both computers on the 2 monitors simultaneously. Other times, I’ll want to use the pc with both monitors at the same time. I’m being told I’ll need to use a switch to change from one configuration to the other. Is this correct? And will both computers be connected to the Thunderbolt?
I came across your video today!! Excellent idea. I’ve been searching for a way to keep my Mac Studio and build a gaming pc that can be used on one monitor such as the 49 inch monitor in the video. Your video shows both the Mac and PC on each half of the monitor. What I want to know is can you switch between each one (I.e Mac Studio and PC) independently so that you can use the full 49 inch monitor for either computer??
one question, can I get magic keyboard or magic mouse working with KVM feature? since windows already able to recognize both pretty well but am not sure this monitor could or I need a usb bluetooth adapter? it'd be great if control PbP by magic mouse & keyboard thanks for your answer
I've been watching videos about this keyboard and mouse for 2 PCs for almost 2 hours, and yours are THE ONLY ONE with complete explanation, there's always some things missing in other videos. Kudos man!

@@Sejal08 Did you ever get an answer? I'd like to know also.
Can you control brightness independently on both sides of monitor?
You can use logitech option (flow).it have similar feature of synergy
Thanks so much for the vid, makes it so much easier. One question though, does this work with 2 monitors rather than 1 ultra-wide? Thank you
What wood panel do you use on your desk to support the monitor+ergotron weight?
Which cable do you use to plug the thunderbolt dock to the PC itself?
I'm thinking of having a Mac/PC hybrid setup similar to yours, and Synergy is going to make my life so much easier.
Would this work with dual monitors and only one connected to the macbook? Any changes to the setup needed in that situation?
Can I connect two iMacs ?? I want to use an older Mac computer as a second screen for my new iMac computer. How do I do it?
is there any solution to remap keyboard functions like windows CTRL+ALT vs mac CMD+OPTION?
Thanks
It was part of the monitor functions, any super ultra wide should have this function
can u also share files as well. Can u click stuff from one computer and drag it to the next?
Can I split like 2 or 3 monitors with only one computer?
Would you happen to remember which isolation pads you used for your speakers?

My upper monitors work well for keeping MS Teams always on top since team communication is expected to be quick responses.
umm... move your monitor to the left?
With Synergy can you use Touch ID if you are controlling two Macs?
Awesome setup! Is it also work if I use 1 monitor? I wanna have one keyboard and mouse for both my mba and pc
You can use Barrier which is a free fork from Synergy.
do you need to do this again and again when you switch off/on the computers?
Does your mouse and keyboard still work on your Mac (client) if your PC (server) is turned off?
yeah, I wanna know that too!
No it doesn’t. The serve needs to be on
This is cool, but if you need to use only one pc you need to power on both computers, because without server PC you can't share the mouse and keyboard with the other PC. I mean, with macbook you can use the trackpad, sure. But if you have a PC and an iMAC or simply 2 PC, is better to have a multidevice mouse and keyboard
Jesse, can I do this with 2 mac mini's and one monitor, keyboard and mouse?
Can you show me the back of the dock after you have it completely setup? I'm trying to solve sharing an Opal C1 webcam between two laptops a m1 MacBook Pro and a T-14 Lenovo. Whichever one is thunderbolt 4 connected as the main host on the dock the other machine doesn't recognize any of the other usb plug-ins.
Can you drag window from each computer into the other? I don’t really see the point in this if you can’t use them in sync with each other.
So, question here. I have 2 monitors and 2 laptops i need to work on. How would that work with Synergy?
Hey Jesse. Great content! Do you need a monitor that supports PIP/PBP inorder to use Synergy with 1 monitor?
PBP doesn’t affect how synergy works in that it will work exactly the same with separate monitors each connected to a separate computer. It will also work with 3 or more computers, multi monitor setups and different operating systems.
Can I connect 2 laptops (pc and Mac) via usb-c/ thunderbolt to the docking station and switch between the two machines on one monitor?
you mention a server for synergy.. but you don't explain which is what?
Don’t use it on your work laptop if you know that the company is strict about that. My solution was just to buy a usb kvm switch.
Hi Jesse! I have a macbook pro 2019 16 inch and I want to know which wide monitor as my external monitor I can use with my macbook pro. Please let me know! Thank you!
Alternatively you can buy a DP KVM Switch for around $50. Ugreen do a really good one. (Also HDMI)
You plug your keyboard/mouse dongle into the USB ports in the front.
HDMI/DP in the back. And then just press a button to switch between computers.
This way you don't need to have a server running at all times.
I have my MacBook connected to a dock. Then from the dock into the DP Switch. My PC into the DP switch. And then the Switch into my monitor (LG 38 ultrawide)
I also have a USB drive in the switch as well.
Is this going to mirror macos as a stream? And Will there be any loss in quality ?
I will be using a pc laptop, a MacBook Air, 2- 27” monitors, 1 mouse and 1 keyboard and Synergy. I want to sometimes use the use both computers on the 2 monitors simultaneously. Other times, I’ll want to use the pc with both monitors at the same time. I’m being told I’ll need to use a switch to change from one configuration to the other. Is this correct? And will both computers be connected to the Thunderbolt?
What is the purpose of the Thunderbolt Dock?
Is there a way to share your keyboard between Android OS and Mac OS ?
Am I able to connect an external keyboard to my labtop so I’m able to use it instead of the labtop keyboard?
Thanks Jesse! Synergy was exactly what I was needing for switching smoothly between computers. Logitech flow is not that accurate!
Did you find an answer to this? Thanks
one question, can I get magic keyboard or magic mouse working with KVM feature? since windows already able to recognize both pretty well but am not sure this monitor could or I need a usb bluetooth adapter?
it'd be great if control PbP by magic mouse & keyboard
thanks for your answer
with Synergy no kvm is required?
what screen arm are you using in this video and what monitor?
Thanks for the video
