I tried Web Design in VR - Meta Quest 3

  • The new Meta Quest 3 was released, and I decided to try web design using it. The Virtua reality headset for website design was actually something I was not expecting to enjoy as much as I did!
    User interfaces will never be designed the same again. I can see how augmented reality will be as important as No Code in the future.
    Facebook has the new Oculus Quest 3 VR headset, and the user experience for it was great. I tried building websites using Figma, Wix Studio and even a bit of coding using vscode to write some javascript, and I really enjoyed the meta quest workspaces application.

      @@leonardobaggio2574 I am delighted that you are considering taking this step. From my own experience, I can assure you that I do not experience any discomfort or limitations at the end of the day. I feel great. In fact, I find that working in VR is much more comfortable for my eyes than working on a regular monitor. Although I have not found any studies or articles explaining why this is the case, for me, it certainly holds true. I can work in VR much longer than I could in real life.
      Moreover, I have tailored my workspace specifically for VR. This means that all components, such as the mouse, keyboard, and chair, are optimized for working in VR.
      However, it is important to note that current headsets are still relatively heavy, so you need to be able to tolerate the weight on your head. Since I have been accustomed to VR for quite some time, this doesn’t bother me. My wife, on the other hand, finds the headset too heavy and cannot stay in VR for long periods.
      Fortunately, this is likely to change soon as headsets are becoming lighter and resolutions are improving, which will significantly enhance comfort.
      You can contact me if you need more informations.

    What would be really cool for me, is Blender being hooked up to the app. I can model away as normal on my desktop and with a simple click have the model appear in my room so I can inspect it up close and make slight adjustments. Along with the game engine and my code editor all on the screens too that would be perfect. But I'm defiantly going to try this out when coding up sites using python and so on. I play games on my Quest 2 and now my Quest 3 daily but never thought about using it for work.

    Did you try immersed VR? The graphics are sharp enough now that you could easily spend 2 to 3 hours using it on quest 3. You can have up to 5 monitors (4 feels about right) and you can run it in passthrough mode too (you'll probably want to have the quest powered with a battery or cable whilst using it). Since you were looking at web dev, and the passthrough element have you also seen web XR? You could create a passthrough experience with 3d elements of html in your room. I've done that on quest 2 but not tried it yet on quest 3.

    • @MaximumNewbage
      @MaximumNewbage 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      How does immersed work? Does it require you to be online? Can you use it in airplane mode or where there's no internet? Also, what is the pricing? one-time buy or is it subscription? The latter seems like it would be too much just act as a monitor replacement.

    • @c6jones720
      @c6jones720 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Immersed is free but there is a paid for tier as well, you can get extra perks like up to 5 monitors. Thigs have changed recently anyway and now there are PWA versions of microsoft office apps available right on your quest, so remoting into another PC may not be necessary@@MaximumNewbage

    Immersed is the way to go for productivity in VR. The free version is capped at 3 screens, 1 @ 2560x1600p and 2 @ 1920x1080 which is fine for me. If you get the pro version I believe you can have 5 screens all running at 2560x1600. You can also set where your keyboard is IRL and it will have passthrough where your keyboard is if you're like me and need to look at the keys every now and then.

  • @Martin.Hansen
    @Martin.Hansen 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

    I bought the Quest 3 as I had the Quest 2, and my main purpose for buying them is productivity, specifically pertaining to work. With the Quest 2, the resolution left a lot to be desired in terms of text clarity, so working in VR for an hour or two definitely left my eyes feeling strained and could give me a headache, but the Quest 3 doesn't. The increased resolution combined with the pancake lenses makes for such a good combo, to where it feels like the clarity can't really get that much better.
    Immersed is definitely the way to go for now, as they allow you to not only bring your real monitors into VR, but also make virtual monitors that you can even increase the resolution to 4k on granted you get the pro version. That said, I haven't found a way to utilize this for better clarity, it simply just increases the size of the monitor/fits more pixels into the screen. Setting a 200% scaling on the monitor brings it back to its regular size, but I haven't found that it's visibly clearer, although some do report that. As an added bonus, you can chill out with random people while you work in Immersed, even fully muted, which gives the working-in-a-café feel to it.
    This is the worst working in VR will be, so definitely looking forward to what's next!

      Basically very much comparable to a 1080p monitor. I have a 1440p monitor and when running "Virtual Desktop" app , I can read the text just fine on it. For context, if you have chrome open and you look at the bookmarks bar, the text will be quite small, its still readable without leaning in but I can see aliasing around it and slight shimmering. Overall, if you are coding and looking at your editor you can 100% code with Quest 3, but you will be more productive with a monitor with 1440p or 4k resolution. But having said that the ability to have multiple virtual screens presents an upside and I can see myself trading off clarity for multitasking.

    I bought a playstation vr back in 2016 when it was new.. it was just wow.. so wow i couldn’t think of returning to normal gaming. In my mind, anyone who did not have a psvr were missing something amazing.. but after of couple of months.. i decided to sell it and to return to normal gaming.. having a headset even if it is very light.. is not natural.. think as if you are working with heavy boots , security vest and helmet and harness (if you are a construction worker) or a police officer with tons of heavy stuff to your belt and a bullet vest, or a soldier with tons of heavy gears .. anything on your head and face for long period of times become annoying, you are sweating, your hair looks ugly (motorcycle helmet) in the end you prefer not wearing anything so you can lay down in your bed, looking up or sleep on the side freely.. at night , when my wife is sleeping next to me, i use a earphone headset so she can sleep.. that alone is anoying.. it put pressure on your ears.. so honestly vr is fun but for very extensive use.. it is still a no no.. there are some glasses with old screens displays but they are not true VR.. but are much better for long hours.. the Appele vision pro is amazing, high quality and way more better than the quest3 but also alor heavier and extremely and i mean extremely expensive.. still i don’t think you can wear an apple vision pro all dat at work.. for a short mereting or a phone call or a small presentation.. maybe but all day long.. nope.. so all im saying is that vr headset on your head for very long hours is not there yet

    Working in VR is the great excuse for buying Quest 3 😅but we all know the real reason.
    By the way, can you make the screen in VR bigger and closer to eyes, so you don't need to lean forward to see small text?

    I never thought I was a screen resolution snob. I have a mate who is. He’s always whinging about stuff the rest of us simply don’t see.
    Then comes the Quest 3. I have one, it’s great for the price, but its screens are garbage. I keep seeing videos like this one, suggesting the virtual screens are good, and people do work on them. I simply cannot fathom why anyone would put themselves through that.
    I’ve used a bunch of virtual display apps. All leave me with the sense of being completely underwhelmed and disappointed. Maybe I’m a screen snob in VR?

    This looks cool, but not worth the loss of efficiency.

      I guess it depends on how you use it

    Forget web design in VR. Focus on web design for VR.
