That last story reminds of the "Snow Woman", a Japanese folktale in which two men trek up a mountain in the middle of a snowstorm. They find a cabin on the way up, and so decide to hunker down for the night. Later that evening, one of them wakes up to find his compatriot being frozen to death by a Yuki-Onna, or Snow Woman in Japanese, who then notices him after the deed is done. Instead of killing him though, she makes him swear to never tell anyone of what he just witnessed and leaves. Keeping true to his word, he makes his way back down and told the other villagers of how his friend just died on the way up the path, and life went on with him finding a beautiful woman, marrying her and having two or three children with her. However, he could never seem to shake off his mind the events of that night, so eventually, he told his wife of the Woman and how she killed his friend. This only proves to set her off with her screaming "You swore you'd never tell anyone!", revealing herself to be the Yuki-Onna he met years ago. She didn't kill him for it because she had children with him and still loved him, so instead she chose to disappear and never return... There are many similar tales to this one, but this peculiar one seems to be the inspiration for the Lover's Vow Segment in this film.
I just saw this story somewhere else on here. I remembered watching this review and seeing that Gargoyle story and came back here just to make sure and confirm it. neat. small world and stuff. glad i wasn't the only one seeing this idea and connection. 👍
I actually think the Gargoyle story is actually based on that tale. If you look up the movie, it will tell the story is based on a Japanese story from Yuki-Onna, which is a collection of Japanese folktales.
Well, it is the plot of a Japanese folklore where the man also marries a shapeshifting monster. It was a personally neat moment when I noticed where the twist came from.
I seriously loved the gargoyle story, the idea that a monster woman could find love for a human. Along while it was based off a secret, it showed how the monster loved the artist. As well to scream out in sadness.

I think Lover's Vow might be inspired by a japanese legend featuring the yuki-onna. The story goes that an old man and his apprentice were caught in a snowstorm. The yuki-onna kills the old man, but spares his apprentice because of his age, on the promise that he never tells anyone about it. He promises, and later on meets and marries a young, beautiful woman, and has children with her. One day he tells her about the encounter with the yuki-onna, only for his wife to reveal that she is the yuki-onna. The legend ends differently depending on what version you're reading; in some she kills him, but the most common ending is her leaving with their children, leaving the man alone and abandoned.
Kwaidan was written by Lafcadio Hearn, who married a Japanese woman, who later, told him these stories of her people's mythos and Lover's Vow was based on Yuki-onna, but the ending was different. Hearn later became discredited by racist editors and discontinued from writing to become a broken man.
There are some versions her leaving their children with the father and just before she disappears, she tells him to not speak badly of her or otherwise.
So that gargoyle was wearing drag for ten years, had a loving relationship with the guy, bonked him more or less regularly and had his kids just to make sure he never tells anybody? That is some serious dedication!
The Gargoyle was shown to be watching him right at the start of the segment. I think it had fallen in love with him from the start before it got him to make the promise.
I was talking with a friend today, he talked about that gargoyle segment and just when i return to my home... "Brandon Tenold has uploaded a new video".

To the audience, it was a matter of where and *when* it would transpire.

The funny thing is, when I saw this I was already familiar with the Japanese story of the Yuki Onna; I was like, "Oh, no way..!" when I saw how the gargoyle story was going and was super tickled.
2:42 Ah, yes. The short-lived 90s craze of Power Rangers clones. Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad, Big Bad Beetleborgs, VR Troopers, Tattooed Teenage Alien Fighters from Beverly Hills. Good times, I guess.
@zyphoid666 Seems legit to me. Most of those shows back then leaned heavily on the gimmicky computer effects of the era that they may as well have been animated. Most didn't have vast pools of old Japanese TV shows to pull from.
I watched this movie when I was really young (like 8 or 9) but never caught the title. Thanks for helping me remember this gem! The Mummy one was my favorite story. I was always really interested in Ancient Egypt.
I love this movie. I love _this show,_ and I didn't even know about until, like, 2 years ago or something. I remember Chiller used to air this during the day back when that channel was still on the air. The production values, the acting, the sound design, the actual stories - it was awesome, and over-the-top, and had fun, practical special FX. Just like a TV show comprised of nothing but good, weird short 80's B-Movie horror movies. And I never even knew _why_ until this review :P Is there anything George Romero and Stephen King couldn't do? Oh and *hell yeah,* I remember Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad, lol. Even thought of it _recently,_ since Studio TRIGGER is making a new Gridman (the thing Syber Squad pulled footage from) anime right now that's inexplicably called "SSSS Gridman", and I choose not to look up what that "SSSS" officially stands for. In my mind, it's an *_obvious_* shout-out to the kids in the West who remember that "classic" 90's Matt Lawrence-starring Tokusatsu show :D
@SupremeEgyptianGodsMan The gargoyle is a fantasy and horror monster inspired by the gargoyle architectural element. the idea of such statues physically coming to life is a more recent notion. Like golems, they are usually made of magically animated or transformed stone, but have animal or chimera traits and are often guardians of a place such as a cathedral or castle. They can also be depicted as vessels for demonic possession or as a living species resembling statues. Ordinarily, gargoyles are stone statues carved into a demonic shape and imbued with life by magical means,
I remember Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad. Then I watched the show's original Japanese version Gridman The Hyper Agent. Then the SSSS. Gridman anime. All 3 are fantastic. Check them out.

Will you do old TV shows one day like Freddy's nightmare and the Friday the 13 series or the show monsters? Of course tales from the dark side is a great show
If you want to do some more anthology-type movies, let me recommend the following: - Screamtime (1983) - From a Whisper to a Scream (1987) - The Willies (1990) - Grim Prairie Tales (1990)
What I think makes Lovers Vow so stellar is the acting (I like it when character actors like James Remar get a chance to show their skills they never get a chance to show playing some idiot two-bit role) and the writing. There are wrinkles in the story on rewatch, after knowing the twist, to actually theorize what the motive of the gargoyle was, possibly to an extent that you can read more into it than what was probably intended. Did the gargoyle (I'm being vague on purpose lol) plan for the ending of the short all along? Did they actually genuinely do the things it did or was it all a long con? Did James Remar's character ACTUALLY break his promise or did the gargoyle get him on a bizarre technicality? It's these little wrinkles in the short that keeps me rewatching it all these years later, because for a dinky short story, in an anthology film which contained *A KILLER CAT* and Debbie Harry starring in a super campy version of Hansel and Gretel, Lover's Vow has far more depth to it than it should have had.
Hey Brandon, I DO remember Superhuman Samurai Cyber Squad! The best part about that series was Tim Curry doing the voice of the main villain in cyberspace! I wish you'd have a episode review of that series, even though it doesn't fit the format (horror B movies).
The last segment of this antology (the one with the gargoyle) is actualy a weird adaptation of a legend from Japan folklore called "The Yuki Ona" that can also be found in an actual Japanise horror antology titled "The Beyond". Is actually an awesome movie, much better and much older than this one, you could review it.
The award winning Japanese horror anthology movie "Kwaidan" (1965) actually contains the original folk tale, "The Woman of the Snow" or "Yukionna" in Japanese is the 2nd story in the movie.
I’ve always seen it as a reverse beauty and the beast type curse. The movie shows her checking him out first in gargoyle form, before the the kill. Then once he makes his vow to her, she suddenly shows up as his dream woman he instantly has the drive to love and protect. Her and the kids would get to live their lives as humans. *If , he keeps his his initial vow, unknowingly, to her*
As a kid growing up in the early 90s, that Gargoyle was absolutely fucking terrifying. That thing still gives me the damn creeps. A close 2nd was the gremlin from the Twilight Zone movie.. Great review Brandon

YES! loved this movie, glad you were getting around to it with that last send-off! I remember seeing it on DirecTV from a few minutes into the last story, so I was totally lost, but you're very right on that judgement; it's not the first Creepshow, but it sure ain't the second one either. It was memorable, engaging, scary, and made you give a shit about the ending. Favorite's definitely the second one for its stark intimacy, but it's a fun picture in its entirety too, which a good anthology of horror shorts should make its first task. Thanks very much for the Creepshow-a-thon, Brandon, it felt like you brought over four big horror comics and wound up engaging a fun conversation about 'em. Only now, what comes up next? Dad's stodgy 70s flicks, or playing with the giant monster action figures~?
Ahhhh Superhuman Cyber Squad, right after the Edison Twins and My Secret Identity and i think Dog House (the show with the dead cop that turned into a dog with Jaimz Woolvett ,.. AM i the only one that remembers that one? it hardly even has an IMDB lol).. :D
I *totally* remember the Superhuman Samurai Cybersquad and THANKS, Brandon, the theme song is now stuck in my head. And great, the VR Troopers song popped up too. I loved you Brandon, but now I'm not so sure.

“Lover’s Vow” is based off of a Japanese ghost story called “The Snow Woman”.
SupremeEgyptianGodsman According to Brandon it is definitely a gargoyle.
Neither did I! I thought the Gargoyle was gonna come, and kill the guy's wife and children, I was expecting the wife to BE the Gargoyle!
I liked the black cat suffocating its victim with its paw and body.😂
Jesus.
I watched this movie when I was really young (like 8 or 9) but never caught the title. Thanks for helping me remember this gem!
The Mummy one was my favorite story. I was always really interested in Ancient Egypt.
I remember Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad in 1994 and 1995, when I was little boy.
I still like it, also Power Rangers and VR Troopers too.

I remember seeing the movie as a kid. The Gargolyle story was sad and had a Twist ending, I loved it.
Sad is exactly it. She genuinely looked disappointed when he broke his vow, like he just ruined her “happily ever after” dream life.
@@cjwrench07 yes, because she was cursed to do what she does. I wonder if she had been human and was cursed by a witch or something. 😪😔
@@ricogoldstar It's the most likely explanation, as she seemed to love him too.
Ordinarily, gargoyles are stone statues carved into a demonic shape and imbued with life by magical means,
One of our favorite anthologies! :D And the Gargoyle story is a beautifully re-telling of "Woman of Snow"!!!
Omg I saw this as a kid!!! So cool to see you talking about this one!!! :D
me too guys
I remember Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad. Then I watched the show's original Japanese version Gridman The Hyper Agent. Then the SSSS. Gridman anime. All 3 are fantastic. Check them out.
This is one of my favorite anthology movies !

He just couldn't stay away.
I haven't heard that song, sense I was a kid. Man that song is dark af
Review Amicus Productions "Tales From the Crypt" (1972) and the "sequel" Vault of Horror
2:58 Yup! And there's an anime reboot of it out now called SSSS Gridman. 😁
The one with James Remar is a freakin' classic
Superhuman Samurai syber squad has an anime now it's called SSSS gridman you can watch it on FUNimation or Crunchyroll it's made by trigger the same people who made Kill la Kill and Gurren Lagann
2:57 Why, yes I do remember discount 90's Ultraman.
Will you do old TV shows one day like Freddy's nightmare and the Friday the 13 series or the show monsters? Of course tales from the dark side is a great show
And how about Tales from the Crypt as well?
Night gallery was also one I watched as a kid
Freddy’s Nightmares would be gold
10:59 That's Mark Margolis aka Don Hector Salamanca!
Waiting on "Sundown, The Vampire in Retreat" with Bruce Campbell.
oh hell yeah!
you mean Bubba Hotep? and it was a mummy, not vampire
JK
That final segment reads like a German fairytale...
It was based on a Japanese story, actually. "The Woman of the Snow," specifically.
@@DarkmanPoe I'm familiar with that and "The Crane Wife", but I don't think the bridegroom meets a terrible fate...
Makes me think of an old Arab fairy tale if you replace the gargoyle with a ghoul......
@@LaDracul It really depends on the version you read. Some are more brutal than others, which is standard fair for folktales.
Yuki Onna
I remember Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad! It had Tim Curry as evil computer virus!
Kilokahn
Joey Brown Let's Samurize guys....
Great video! Someday you could review Stephen King's Cats Eye.
“Cat from Hell” has a almost similar sympathy and revenge story like “The Cats of Ulthar.”
What?
And another one for the list. Seriously, review shows like this sometimes turn into buyer's guides for me. :D

I forgot about this movie! I watched it when I was younger and remember the Gargoyle story! Thank you for reviewing this!
If you want to do some more anthology-type movies, let me recommend the following:
- Screamtime (1983)
- From a Whisper to a Scream (1987)
- The Willies (1990)
- Grim Prairie Tales (1990)
Did Bliss really steal the "I can't live on nothing" conversation from Tales From the Darkside?
You were absolutely right about why I remember this movie. Gotta track this one down and revisit!
As funny as it is seeing Brandon rip all those bad movies apart, it's also equally funny to see him talk about something he actully likes.
Hey Brandon, I DO remember Superhuman Samurai Cyber Squad! The best part about that series was Tim Curry doing the voice of the main villain in cyberspace! I wish you'd have a episode review of that series, even though it doesn't fit the format (horror B movies).
In fairness to David Johansen, he was the best part of "Mr. Nanny".
I like this movie. I really like the last one with the Gargolye. The special effect is freaking awesome.
13:59 James Remar hell yeah for those who don't know he was in the 1979 The Warriors movie as Ajax loved his character who else?!
@@ItsMrAssholeToYou bet man
Speaking of Super-Human Samurai Syber Squad have you seen SSSS Gridman yet?
the ssss actually does stand for superhuman samurai syber squad
The initials are more of a reference I don’t think it actually stands for that
Lover's Vow actually reminds me of Yuki Onna from Japan, I wonder if that's where they got the idea for it.
It is.
How do you know.
The award winning Japanese horror anthology movie "Kwaidan" (1965) actually contains the original folk tale, "The Woman of the Snow" or "Yukionna" in Japanese is the 2nd story in the movie.
I LOVED this movie as a kid. "You promised!!"
We really do need to keep spreading the links. This is one of the most underappreciated channels on TH-cam.
Wish(master) there were good B movies like these today. Gore, unrealism, and entertaining.
I wonder if this was the inspiration for Nanowar of Steel's song "And then I Found Out She was a Gargoyle"?
Butt Head: "This guy looks like that Christian Slater dude."
Beavis: "Christians? Later dude. "
Brandon you did me such a awesome service I was trying like crazy to remember the name of that so
Thank god, someone else who watched “Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad”.
So, I've always wondered- were the gargoyle babies half-human or did she just produce them? Or maybe her bloodline is cursed?
I’ve always seen it as a reverse beauty and the beast type curse.
The movie shows her checking him out first in gargoyle form, before the the kill. Then once he makes his vow to her, she suddenly shows up as his dream woman he instantly has the drive to love and protect. Her and the kids would get to live their lives as humans. *If , he keeps his his initial vow, unknowingly, to her*
I wonder if the kids knew they were gargoyles too
Rae Dawn Chong is so beautiful and this movie is soooooo good
Well played , Brandon. Although I have clearly not seen nearly so much as you, I do find myself in agreement with most of your opinions on films.
5:34 - so is that his Canadian-ness coming to light unintentionally ?
As a kid growing up in the early 90s, that Gargoyle was absolutely fucking terrifying. That thing still gives me the damn creeps. A close 2nd was the gremlin from the Twilight Zone movie.. Great review Brandon
"They're gonna amp it up!
Kick some giga-butt!
They're gonna RIP it up!

Loved this! Keep up the great work my fellow Canadian.
I love the custom Desert Eagle that the hitman uses in the Cat From Hell story. Reminds me of the one from Resident Evil 2.........I WANT IT!!!!
I think he went a little overboard with that lasersight, though.the undercarriage version would've ensured he got the target.Besides,i'm more of a British Enfield Service Revolver type-of dude.More classy for a Hitman to use, imo.

I've never forgot the Gargoyle Story, probably shouldn't have watched it as a kid. May have impacted many relationships. Great Review as always ;)
That third segment is proof they could've made a Venom movie back then.
I *totally* remember the Superhuman Samurai Cybersquad and THANKS, Brandon, the theme song is now stuck in my head. And great, the VR Troopers song popped up too. I loved you Brandon, but now I'm not so sure.
Here's an interesting fact, the Gargoyle suit and design was made by the same Guy that worked in the Creature Effects for the Guyver Movies!
I was wondering why the gargoyle suit and design looked so familiar to me. Thanks for the trivia!
Kinda fitting, given the story of the segment itself is pretty much a western take on a Japanese story as well lol
Hilarious review! I especially love all your puns and pop culture references. I had forgotten it was James Remar in the gargoyle story (years before “Black Lightning”!).
