    Most Finns are a lot happier in summer time than in winter. In fact long dark winters cause depression, as the amount of light reduces. But in summer time Sun is up almost the whole day, it's light 24 hours a day. And people are much more lively and energetic.

    The word "happy" and "happiness" is over used and misunderstood these days. Finland has a great Governmental system, low corruption and very good social network lead by the State. That's what these reports are measuring. The people and the private sectors are another story. The weather is so hard that you need to run out of Finland many times per year to sunnier places just to cross the very cold and dark days of winter. Social interaction is limited and people see very strange that you want to talk to strangers on the street just to say "hi " inside an elevator (a case that is very different in other countries) . The rate of suicides is high for such a small country of 5 million people. So the question about "happiness" is still open...

    • @diamondsarenotforever8542
      @diamondsarenotforever8542 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The suiciderates have gone drasticly down. Now 34th place. In Europe Lithuania and Belarus are leading. Forinstance Belgium Russia, Hungary etc. Are far ahead of Finland. Finland is likely in the middle. You can google that.

    Finland has too the most homogenic white race population in Europe. Finnish people are too commonly the most white skin, the most blond hair and the most blue eyes people in the world together with our close relative nation and Baltic Southern neighbour country people, the original Estonians in Estonia, and the Northern Germany´s coastline areas people. Then believe or not, the closest genetic relatives of the Finnish people in Europe are the original Germanic Dutch people in Holland and the Belgium´s Germanic Flames. Greetings from Northern Europe, Finland! :)

  • @redberryterf

    "happy" is the last word I would use to describe finland. I have been living here all my life and I think it is funny how people belive that living here is perfect and we have everything under control. the truth is; living here is quite sad, boring, routine filled and melancholic. everything works fine, but I feel like no one is really ENJOYING. people don't care about each other over here! being independent is a huge value in finnish culture and surviving on your own makes you a hero. caring too much is weird here. we have a huge mental health problem! depression is so common due to social norms and the weather. so when they say "happy", it doesn't mean real happiness, it means mostly safety and balance. if you visit finland as a tourist, you will not understand this. if you move to finland, I think the truth will slap you in the face at some point. this is my opinion.

      Very insightful comments and a lot more relevant than a UN accolade with very selective perameters. The UN report draws data from places like (I am not making this up!) Happiness Research Institute which is based in....Denmark. UN does not include but excludes the EU FRA 2017 MIDIS II official report data that ranks Finland as #2 most racial discriminatory EU nation. PM Juha Sipilä can also continue to deny these issues while the majority ignore the minorities.

      Roraneel, I have lived here in Finland for 65 years, and I share much of your critics about Finland. This is not a paradise. But I think, that the other countries have more flaws in their structures than Finland, and so proportionally we are in better situation than the others, although many of us doesn't agree with that. One key factor is, that in Finland it is morally very questionable to show your happiness in public. If you are happy, you have to hide it. "Kell' onni on , se onnen kätkeköön", is the text is a popular Finnish song. To be openly happy might irritate those, who are not as happy. That logic might sound weird to an Italian or a Brazilian, but that is how we Finns basically behave.
      Finland was topping the list of suicides in 1990, but from that this number has halved in Finland. Obviously we have done something right in our mental care. One of the basic factors adding stress is the big change from 0 hours daylight to 24 hours in the summer and back to 0 hours in the winter. Naturally this is true only in the northern part of Finland. Here in Jyväskylä the difference between the shortest and longest day is "only" 14.5 hours. But still the nature here is pulsating heavily and we have not yet been physically adapted to that.

      +milkrokupu That's the point. The political centre in Scandinavia, and in Europe in general, is so far to the left. The centre-right for the Finish would be liberal even by US democrat standards. Even Germany has a hard time telling a difference between the CDU and the SPD. Its just the politics in America is skewed so far to the right, it distorts all other societies.

      Ain'r no Slice Yeah it can be tricky to compare different political maps. In Finland the largest conservative party supports gay marriages. the Green party (relatively big with 14% support) is placed more in centre than in left. They have been in the same government with the Cons several times.
