@@Janttura ... already tried to be welcoming.. up to a point where basically everything was open to them from education to healthcare to housing.. but since finnish language is so difficult and practically non mandatory there is almost zero interest in learning it. Government basically ignored all warning bells which in turn created refugee/immigrant ghettos where disinterest in education, lack of linquistical proficiency and unfortunate elements such as crime just bloom. Juvenile crime done by immigrant children is skyrocketing in Helsinki thanks to "being more welcoming"..
Those who actually do want to learn the language and get a job suffer from governments utter disinterest in weeding out the underlying crime problem and instead use that lawful portion as a smoke cover.
Saying "We could do better to be more welcoming" has backfired so hard its beyond tragicomedic unfortunately. Oulu 2018 is still festering in my memory.. If you dont force feed them the standards of respect towards laws and treatment of other people then you can forget integration. They sure as hell dont integrate if its easier to be "forever muslim refugee" in Finland than a finn in Finland.

It isn't only a materialistic ranking, there are factors like social support, corruption, freedom to make life choices. Finland is not among the top welthiest nations in Europe, more like "upper middle class". The key factor is the mutual trust that still exists in Finland, more or less. People trust each other and the institutions. The government trust Finns are ready pay the high taxes, the tax payers feel they get a lot in return. Of course, there are no prefect paradise on this planet but as a Finn myself I think my everyday life is made pretty smooth.

On topic: as an immigrant in California I cannot help but shake my head at how all these meaningless politics and wokeness is destroying fabric of USA inside out whereas the fundamentalist government of Taliban is equal cause of woe as are places where there is hotbed of corruption and violence. Israel seems like a strange anomaly. Thus the definer is that find a balance. Too much wokeness and too much fundamentalism is surefire recipe for distress.
As for Finland, I am very curious how the opponents of Sanders-school would point out how this type of Finnish model is not feasible on a larger scale in bigger countries and as to what the rebuttal is. Everything from hyper montessiori education of Finnish to work-life balance seems to exceed other countries but I find it baffling if America is the greatest countries in the world how come we have such poor work/life balance due to corporate greed.
Guess the same shoulder that helped to build this country also got their backs broken.

    • These surveys were done by western agencies with western standards. For example, no religious/spiritual happiness was taken into account, something that doesn't exist in the West. Also the way they measured freedom is according to western standards. Ofcourse you get top Western countries.
    • Finland has huge natural reserve to sell to Europe, which makes their GDP/Capita higher. Just dropping things like 'they closed the gender pay gap' (that almost doesn't exist in most countries) without context misleads people to think that feminist activism will lead to more hapiness.
