Why Denmark Is One Of The Happiest Countries In The World

  • Dan Buettner is a National Geographic Explorer and the author of "The Blue Zones of Happiness: Lessons from the World's Happiest People." Here, he explains how Denmark is consistently ranked as one of the happiest countries in the world. Following is a transcript of the video.
Dan Buettner: I actually think most of the previous stories about Danish happiness were wrong.
The first stories were that: Danes are happy because they have low expectations. Nothing could be further than the truth. Every Dane, from the moment they're born, expects free healthcare, free education. When they get into college they expect to be paid to go to school. If they have a child, they expect to have 10 months of paid maternity or paternity leave. And they expect to be able to retire absolutely securely for the rest of their life. It's huge expectations.
What makes Danes happy, I believe is because their government takes care of all the necessities of life - nothing can ever go too wrong in their lives - they're free to pursue a job that really speaks to their passions.
But actually, Denmark is a place where ambition is not greatly celebrated. So, people aren't in the rat race. They’re not always buying new clothes and new cars and trying to keep up with the Joneses, and that gives them more time to pursue their interests.
So, you have a country here where people are good at architecture and they create the best restaurants in the world and furniture design. And these are jobs suggestive of flow - of optimal using your talents, so that time can absolutely disappear.
When it comes to happiness, I think we often think of it as the attainment of joy, but actually, the bigger part of happiness is getting rid of the stresses of our daily lives. So, this notion of having your health insurance covered, your education covered, and your retirement covered is actually very huge.

Richard Forester The point is that if you are talented, you will go to college notwithstanding your family's social class. If you happened to fall ill, you won't die, suffer lasting sequels or lose your house. It's a safety net built by everybody for everyone, not each one to themselves as in USA. That's called civilization.

LagiNaLangAko23 You have just watched a video showing an actual country with great advancements in what for many other ones is dreaming. María Martínez What you call "civilization" I call slavery. Oh, and don't kid yourself, people still die and suffer with socialized medicine. And nobody is guaranteed success either. In the US or in Denmark. There are many opportunities for those that want to work hard here. It's lazy folks that expect "free" stuff that fail. But if you think it's so great elsewhere, feel free to leave. Nobody is keeping you here.

Speak for yourself Jen. I am not "miserable", and neither are most people I know. You've got a lot of nerve implying that I am selfish. Who the hell do you think you are? And no, not "EVERYONE" knows that "free" isn't free. I don't know what fantasy land you come from but there are lots of people that just think it's ok to lean on the government because it is "free". I agree with your point that some of the poorest people are the hardest working but that's about it.

Happiness is all about security. NO, not the kind of security that Americans are stupidly obsessed with. I'm talking about economic security. The kind of security that he's talking about in this video. The kind that ensures you'll NEVER have to struggle without knowing you have the essentials required to survive. That is the key to happiness and here in the US, we've been duped by greedy corporate elites into believing we don't deserve that kind of security and that we should be 'happy' to get the pathetic wages they're willing to give, even though they are worth billions and can easily pay more. We Americans are a somewhat stupid and beaten down people, when it comes right down to it. We are our own worst enemies because we allow ourselves to be manipulated and used by the powerful, to keep them wealthy and us struggling.

Most wealthy countries have a high usage of anti-depressants, but it doesn't actually tell you anything about the general well-being of the population. In some respects it might even been seen as a sign of health, that people aren't afraid to seek treatment. You could compare it to how Scandinavian countries have relatively high number of reported sexual assaults because in a highly egalitarian country it is less of taboo and women can expect to get help and will therefore be more likely to report the crime. Statistics aren't very helpful if you don't understand the background for the data.

Please understand it is the PEOPLE who take care of people, and this is the message we always have been sending to our government, whoever is in charge. There are some basic values we all agree on (that goes for the other Scandinavian countries too) the rest we can discuss. Everybody in Denmark can start a political party; as it is we have plenty to choose from already. But if I started a political party with the slogan “pay 0-taxes” meaning the end of free healthcare, free schools and so on, I would never get votes enough for just one seat in parliament.

As a Canadian.... I couldn't agree more. Being so close to the US I obviously am surrounded by their news and social media channels etc etc ... and as similar as we are in terms of Geography, we as a Country are a lot more like Denmark then the US. Specifically in terms of what you mention in your video
We may not have the extensive coverage of Denmark, we do have Free health care and retirement benefits, two major subjects we often take for granted.
Although, the end of the day I believe one's Happiest is measured by one's own decisions in life, personal choices, and expectations.
If you can PERSONALLY be happy with "less"... and by less that covers everything not just materialistic items, you're likely easier to live a happy stress free life.

Denmark is a nice country, but from my experience visiting Copenhagen, its a very socially awkward society, people rarely look at each other when they cross paths, their entire society is very conformist and anyone who doesn't fall in line with their social norms is ostracised, it doesn't feel like the freedom i feel in USA where the government isn't breathing down my neck
*EDIT:* Yes, when i say Denmark is a socially awkward society, i mean the people seem very introverted, perhaps this is a byproduct of a socialist society, the people already have everything they need because of their social safety-net, this tends to produce people who are less extroverted which is linked to ambition and ultra capitalistic societies like America. Hence, Denmark are the largest consumers of anti-depressants in Europe

This is why we need Universal Basic Income (UBI). We need to remove the dependency on money for basics such as food, water, etc. so people can make better, more appropriate career decisions without money being the primary influencing factor. This will also drive down student debt & encourage creative thought leading to greatly enhanced productivity in an efficient manner. I've ran the numbers, replacing the nearly $1T we spend on all sorts of welfare & replacing it with UBI will provide for all of the 100M people not in the labor force, including students & retirees. If we just use $800B from welfare spending leaving $200B for medical coverage, it gives all of the 100M people $8,000 a year, or $670 a month, which is triple the average welfare check amount.

A OECD report suggests the moods of Scandinavian nations may be more closely linked to medicine than anything else. The chart depicts the relative amounts of antidepressant consumption across several different European nations. Iceland - not technically in Scandinavia but nearby - leads with 101 daily doses per 1,000 people. Denmark, Sweden and Finland are all close behind, with Portugal the only outlier. Norway ranks ninth. LOL... ironic huh? www.opposingviews.com/health/worlds-happiest-countries-take-most-antidepressants

Denmark dosn’t have as people say “Free healthcare” and “Free education” it’s paid through it’s high tax. But most of that tax is returned to the people and directed to help the people which is what makes it work. Alot of people live with average income and such because of the high tax. You might not have all the luxuries of life, but in return if you ever get ill you’re coverd. And if you’re a single mom with 2 children and low income, the communes will help paying the rent you can’t pay meanwhile also giving you money for your children and yourself so you can buy basic life needs, they do this until you get a higher income that can suppot both rent and basic needs (Clothing, food, etc) until then they’ll help you.

Also, Danes are not really the "happiest" people on earth. A more accurate reality is simply a more content people, but not really happier. Content due to many of the societal obstacles to comfort have been removed, by a combination of the government and the generally hard working and socially conscious nature of the people. However, this is NOT a source of actual happiness. Contentment and happiness are not the same thing. In fact, often, in order to gain true happiness, you may temporarily loose contentment.

Denmark has a high cancer rate because it has a high smoking rate regarding > (woman) and it also has a high alcohol consumption rate, so ive read. My quess, denmark may not use sensible political legislation regarding alcohol. E.G. ban the advertisement > reduce its availability down to the right level and alcohol that is too cheap > it does not go on sale to the public. Alcohol is a drug and a strong depressant and it can cause over 60 diseases, apparently. The legal drinking age in Denmark is 18 years in public houses and ov that nature. 16 year year olds can buy alcohol legaly in denmark from shops which could be foolish.

We just give more money to the government, so the people that don't have much money, can still get food, go to university, get a job and eventually retire. If YOU lost your job, and no one would hire you, then you would probably end up homeless. In Denmark that wont happen. You will have a home, and you will have food, and you will still have money for a TV. The homeless in Denmark are almost all selfmade. Most of the homeless are on the street, because they were either alcoholics, drug addicts, illegal immigrants or mentally ill. Now, the last one is not good, but the reason why they live on the streets, is many times that they couldn't live anywhere else. Denmark isn't perfect, but it's sure as hell better than America!

Neighbors don't ask about each other. In some cases, an old neighbor dies and no one hears about him,, he still many day and no one ask about him ect... Staff like that, you don't find that in other society , the happier countries in the world for me are the middetearanen countries in general : South Europe like Portugal Italy, Spain, South France,, turkey Greece ect... , North African countries : like morroco , Tunisia, Egypt,, labanon ect..., Countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea in general Because of the mild weather, they don't feel depressed, and especially the countries who are relationship between each other, neighbors ask about each other ect... and familiar societies, alive society if you understand what I mean ect... Ect.. And in the same in the middetearanen sea,, the weather is good ect... In all the year ect..., scandinavian countries are not happier and are bored society and people without relationship between each other, and added to that you feel depressed by the weather, for me are not happier society, and the happy is not by money or because rich society ect.., they don't have a familiar relationship ect., it's not alive society hhhh, I don't know if you understand what I mean ،like People go out with each other, people sit in the cafe with each other and talk to each other after work ect... , children of neighbors for example play with each other in the neighborhood, strong family relations between them , people visit each other and families visit each other on holidays,, ect... Ect... , the solide relationship between the people, you don't feel they have that, I don't know if you understand what I mean , I am from Tunisia, And we have these things, which you don't find with them, with these peoples in scandinavian countries ect..., they don't have a solide relationship between each other, the neighbors don't know each other ect..., some time, old man die in his house alone and no body hear about him, after few days They find out that he died, they have no family ties, a social relationship, etc, if you understand what I mean, like the others world, that's why you find the highest suicide rate in these countries, these scandinavian countries, very depressed countries
