What Is The BEST Mower Deck Size? ► I've Completely Changed My Mind!

  • Another FAQ from you guys, this one about what is the best mower deck size! There are a ton of options out there when choosing a new lawn mower, and now there are more options than ever before with deck sizes. Which ones make the most sense, which one's don't: we tried to answer this one for you guys today.
The biggest thing I'd like to suggest when trying to purchase a new mower, and deciding on what size deck to get, is what is your core clientele type. The spectrum is usually wide open lawns to a majority of gated back yards, and of course properties in between.
I've found over the last 6-12 months that the smaller size mowers are becoming much more popular, due to their nimble size and ability to fit into gated back yards, while still providing the productivity we need to make money. I used to be a "zero turn or bust" kind of guy, but the last 6 months I've really changed my attitude on that thought.
I like the fact that you can always start with a good 32-36" mower, whether zero turn or stand on, and upgrade to the big dog mower afterwards. There's nothing wrong with getting started that way, and adding a big zero turn mower to your fleet as the business grows. But what you can't do, is take a zero turn mower in to a gated back yard. SEEMS NO BRAINER, until you look around and see how most guys build their businesses. Everyone's first goal is a zero turn, the reality is that you may want to do it the opposite.
What's your guys thoughts on the best mower deck size? What did you get started with first? Did you go out and buy the big dog zero turn mower, or did you take a more tactical approach and start with a smaller mower first, and upgrade a second mower after?

It's all about production and how much production abilities you have on your trailer. We use 72", 48", 36 on a16' trailer. Everything we need is on the trailer. On thing we offer is a cheaper monthly service price it they put in a 78" gate and customers jump at the lower price. Even if it takes them months to install a big gate we make more money till it is installed. We are a very high production company, this is how we have run our rigs for 25yrs.
Look at your situation and build it to you needs you can always adjust. Build it for as much profit you can.

As a riding mower non-commercial home owner, I suggest having a deck right about the size of your wheel base in width. It makes it easier to get the mower close to fence or bush borders. You do not need to drop your gaze to the deck, since it follows the natural line of sight to your front tires.

I agree , I would get a 36" stander if I was just starting out but, once I was established ,I would trade the 36" for 52" or keep it as a backup mower. My 52" almost fits anywhere and its big enough to cover some ground efficiently. Once established , I would not do any yard where my 52" won't fit anymore.

For the area i service in central Texas. There are tons of gated back yards especially the area im in. I had a 52in and push mowed the backs, but quickly realized the time i was wasting. I now have the scag v-ride 36in and the tiger cat 52 and its perfect for me. Even when we get to our bigger acreage lots the vride is still extremely fast and powerful and gets a ton done while im on the 52. That's what has worked for me. When i out grow the one setup i have i will probably buy a 2nd one just the same with a 36 and possibly 61 instead of the 52.

I started with a 36 Scag that fit right in the back of a cargo van. Getting in gates is a must and it will be the first mower I upgrade to a stander. I've picked up so many customers who were tired of rider zero turn mowers on small yards. 1/4 acre lots.

Started with a 42" simplicity. After 1.5 years of hell, I finally saved up enough to buy a used 52" wright stander; best purchase ever. I fix push mowers from the side of the road and use them for the 2 small gated back yards, otherwise the rest are 1-3 acre lots. Buying a 52" zero turn with collection system this week, but if I had smaller properties I wouldn't hesitate to buy a 36 stander, and will if need be.

One of my favorite mower sizes is the 30", such a Time saver on small lawns, inclines etc. We use 36, 48, 52, and 60's daily. Haven't used a 21"er in years as the 30" is preferred. I will be adding another 30" this week and for the first time in years, I will be scooping up a 21"er this season. Good stuff Brian.

IMO a 48" is the best all around deck size it provides a great cut and alot of newer fences come with 50" gates. Sometimes you will run into a small 36" gate but those lawns are few and far between. As you increase the deck size the cut quality declines a 48" will cut much better than a 60"

    • @theunkownmr.562
      @theunkownmr.562 4 ปีที่แล้ว

If you side discharge it will cut better because there's a shorter distance for the grass blade to travel before ejecting out the side.

Surprising how much grass you can get through with a 48" and the walk-behind is so versatile and easy on turf it will take you a long way plus you can get them cheap-cheap used with pretty low hours.

  • @tankslawnmaintenance5230
    @tankslawnmaintenance5230 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I just started my business this year. I was hard headed and didn't put a whole lot of stock into what these videos told me. I went and bought a cheap spartan entry level mower with a 42" deck and now my mower is sitting on the trailer half of the time. This video is spot on. If I could redo it, I would by a 36" walk behind with sulke and a grass catcher. Everyone of my properties are gated and at least 50% of the customers in my area want their lawns bagged. While i have a zero turn mower with only a 42" deck, it's still too big for half my back yards. Next year I will hopefully have a 36"wright velke and a grass catcher and build up to a bigger stander like a zk with a 52" deck. Take it from me and my learning experience. Ed Wright was "wright" when he said you can't cut a backyard with 52 inch deck when the gate is 40 inches wide. Push mowing requires time and time is money! Look at your potential properties and existing properties, take notice of the features in each property (gates, hills, land lines, and bedding areas), decide what will be your best option. I wish I would've seen this video last year. Keep putting out these videos Brian, it helps more than you realize.

Went from a 50” to a 60” this season. Zero fenced back yards. Most of the properties in my area are 1/3 acre and up. Wide open cutting all day. So I’m excited about the larger deck and added more speed. Should cut my time way done per property now. The 60” gives me more options for even large properties as well. 48 Is perfect. It fits thru most fences and is efficient enough for open areas. You can go bigger from there but that’s the smallest I’d go with. Unless you mostly do small cookie cutter type lawns. Like Long Island type is a good example. Then a 32 is fine.

With myself having a side, solo operation, I can be selective on my clientele as I do not need a large # as someone doing lawn care full time. Thus, I can have a 50" deck and if I can't get into their backyard, they are not for me. Time is money, a larger mower gets more accomplished in a shorter amount of time, thus more revenue on an hourly perspective. Deck size depends on what your business model/plan is all about.---For me, a middle-sized deck gets me enough clientele and brings in a greater return then say just a 36" deck.

    My experience and preferences
    70 small residential (2500-5000sq ft)
    62 commercial / large estates ( 0.5 - 25 acres )
    3 parks ( 1.5- 4 acres)
We own four 72" zero turns
    Two 48" hydro walk behind
One 36" belt drive walk behind
    One 32" stand on
    6 $400-600 department store pushmowers.
We use to own a 60" ferris front mount rider
    54" belt driven walk behind
    30" commercial walkbehind.
    I've pretty much tried everything.
If i was just doing a mix of commercial and residential myself. Had $50,000 budget of credit or cash to start for buying mowers.
I would run a 72" zero turn and a 48 " stand on with a cheap push mower for really tight spaces. If i did just residential it would be a 48" stand on and the push mower.
My personal choices would be :
    Riders
    1. 72" scag turf tiger
    2. 72" exmark lazer z
    3. 72" Kubota ZD1211
    Stand on's
    1. 48" Scag vride 2
    2. 48" wright zk
    3. 48" bobcat quick cat
    Push mowers
    1. Anything with a honda engine
    2. Cheaper model toro
My advice : don't buy gear driven. Its a workout to operate and productivity drops big time. Buy a stand on over a hydro you won't be as sore by the end of the day.
Don't waste 3k on a commercial push mower such as the time master or metro. They're a workout and you barely save anytime over a day because turning takes much longer than a 21" so that extra 30% of cutting width really isn't worth it.

I think whether you bag or mulch/side discharge can play a factor. I decided to go with a 30 inch walk behind over a subcompact stander because of the inline rear bagger. I exclusively bag my gated yards. Having an accelerator bag hanging off the side turns that 32 inch stander into more like a 42 to 48 inch. If I didn’t bag the stander is the easy choice.

Kirk Jackson just my opinion to move from a 54 to a 60 won't really ad to your overall production. A 72" ztr will cut your cutting time on your six acre property tremendously. In south Ga. the only thing that you have to worry about is the roll of the hills and scalping. With purchasing a 72" you would need one with little to no trim deck. Our 72" exmark has almost one ft. of trim on the left. On a couple of properties I have to remember to cut certain ways but it works out. Good luck

I mow 97%, quarter acre or less, 20-30 lawns a day. Most are gated/fenced. But, this is my target market. I lift the chute, open the gate and don't even slow down. Im really digging both the V-ride 2 in a 36 in deck and the cheetah in a 52 inch deck. Both are excellent mowers but you are essentially losing out on certain things with both. My thing is, while a stand on 36 will allow you squeeze into tighter spaces and overall help you finish quicker in metro suburban areas, you wont be able to attach a leaf bagger like you would on a zero turn for when fall season comes around. I have been having a little trouble in choosing between the two for those reasons, but Scag is currently having a March special on the V-ride 2 so I am leaning towards that one.

We have a lot of fenced yards in our community so having a small mower is a must. We started our business with a Gravely 40 inch ztr and bought a 44 inch exmark our second year. The 44 fits through most gates. Sold the Gravely 2 years ago and bought a Scag 52 inch ztr and a barely used bagger system for about 1/3 of the new price. Most of my mowers are 60 in. Exmark standards. Also operate 36 in exmark vantage for the smaller backyards. Most clients look at the stand-on mowers as being a lot smaller than the ztr. and if you think about it a 52 compared to a 60in is only 4 inches on each side it's hard to really tell the difference. That way with us we're able to move right along with larger properties and use a 60 in.

So you can’t really get away with using something bigger than a 36’ because the gates and because of scalping. I love exmark, I purchased a used 2014 turftracer with about 150 hours on late September and it’s fantastic. But I recently purchased a 2018 walker model B23i from a buddy of mine. I had no intentions of getting a walker any time soon because of the price tag and I didn’t really need one. So I started yrs ago with a 36 inch walk behind. Cause I needed to cut gated back yards. Then I picked up commercial properties that were bigger but had inclines . I bought a 48 inch walk behind i used those for 3 yrs.. then i realized I was losing time and I had more man power. So I got rid of the walk behinds and got a 36 inch stand on and a 54 inch zero turn.. now I have used a 48 inch stand on and the time is comparable due to the speed of the stand on unit. But time is money more lawns in one day makes $$$.. so my next purchase will prob be a 61 or 72. But if your not doing steep hills I think stand on units are the best also, they take up less room in or on trailer. But it all depends on application. I dont catch grass so I haven't bought one but I like walker decks. Seems they n a walk behind give best cut quality.. then again they all cut grass but depends do you cut only weekly or do you do biweekly lawns.. lol I should start a channel I have alot to say but. Just my experience.. but starting out yes buy a 36 inch stand on if doing small fenced yards..

I plan on starting with a 60" because well, the price is a steal and I don't mind pushing the backs for the time being. The 60" allows open opportunity for commercial work as well as knocking out the fronts in seconds for residentials. My cub cadet push 21 has been beast mode and paid $80 for it lol. I also have a Ryobi SP brushless 21". Really no wrong way to start, what gets done ... gets done. For ME, the 60 as the first choice is better from what i said above and also because when I need smaller, the price is smaller too so I don't have to work so durn much to work up lol. Especially with everything Covid priced these days. But for those doing strictly residential properties, yes the 36 would probably be the all-around option I myself would have gone with. Remember, your smaller level neighborhoods would only have a 38" opening. Most upper level neighborhoods like your rural areas and suburbs would have 40" plus but then again, I live in a "lower level" place and I have a 62 opening because I want to mow my back with the durn 60 lol. It's just a matter of your area and what you plan to work.
