Here's how much I've spent in repairs in 1 year on my V10 Bmw E60 M5

  • You may be surprised at how much I've spent! My repairs start at 1:25. Previous owner’s repairs start at 3:35. With the amount this car has depreciated, its hard to look past the amount of car you're getting for the money. Unfortunately, the V10 can be a scary thought when it comes to maintenance and repairs. I get dozens of questions about how much I've had to spend so far and what issues I've ran across. On top of exhaust videos, I will now be taking this channel a step further and will explain the entire ownership as best as I can. Feel free to ask any questions!

    The M5 is like marrying a beautiful woman whose last 2 husbands died mysterious deaths. Could be nothing....could be the worst decision you ever make. Exciting though.

      +Club Bmw Amg Who cares about 0-60? How many of those cars can do over 200 mph bone stock except a limiter removal? Other than some supercars, I can't think of many other cars from before 2010 that will do those kinds of speeds without modifications. Speed is hardly the reason for its depreciation.
      The reason it is cheap is because some of early 06/07 models had some issues and everyone now thinks they will all spontaneously combust as soon as you hit the ignition.

    I drove Honda Accord's for 13 years. I wanted a car with more power. I almost bought another Honda, but the cost for a fully loaded Honda is almost equivalent to the cost of a BMW. You also get more power in a BMW. SO I took the plunge and bought a 2008 E60. This car is a DREAM! I don't want to drive anything else! And in regards to maintenance and repairs, you have to do that for any car you own. Nothing last forever!! I definitely agree that you have to pay to play when it comes to a high performance car. So for those of you who have so much negative shit to say about BMW are not risk takers and don't enjoy life! You live in a BOX! Come on people you only live once! As my dad always says, "Don't knock it till you try it!"

      Too bad all of these comments are a year old. Don't know if this comment will be answered either. But I'm also thinking of purchasing an E60 M5. Probably one of the newest models that still has the V10 engine in it. Can you tell me if you've done any repairs to the car? And generally how reliable is it? Thinking about using it as a daily driver, would probably use it about four to five times a week.

      Bo Dez you have a good point but bear in mind exotics aren’t for people on a budget. You go in expecting these expenses, I too went from a 12 Honda Accord to an V10 M5 and yes did spend a pretty good amount probably more than I should but in the end I had one hell of a car that still halls ass. 3 years later and the M5 still remains my favorite among my C63, CTS V, and coming soon the C8 Corvette. So yeah most of us that own it are pretty well off. Good things don’t come cheap

    • @Chinese_Chicken
      @Chinese_Chicken 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The cost of the known repairs as a piece of mind is what keeps me away from the V10 M5. With just the aftermarket parts in my Tundra, I could own a very nice E60 M5 plus modding it. Also, there isn't really a lot of places to enjoy the car to it's potential. Reason why I bough an off road Toy that has a 10.5k rpm that I can jump, drift, launch, race on the best tracks around. Seriously the most fun I've ever had sitting behind the steering wheel. This includes 911's, Corvettes, M3, built high rev'ing 10k rpm hondas and many high boost turbo cars. Having negative things to say about this car has NOTHING to do with not being a risk taker and not enjoying life. Besides, the maintenance costs of the M5 I'd rather put towards my international traveling as I'm only living once.

    Love this vid! So many people complain "oh that car is a timebomb of expensive repairs".
    Got my 06 M5 in September, put about 5k on it since, regularly drive it (and may hoon it a bit). Needs DSC module repaired (doesn’t affect drivability at all), had to get new rear tires and oil changes are about $120. And gas, oh boy does it love burning premium! Love every second of being in the drivers seat.

    I've had my 09 M5 for almost 3 years and put around 13k miles on it. It now has just over 73k miles on it. The only things I have replaced are the accessory and AC belts along with tensioners, which I did myself for like $120. Also, my thermostat acts up in the winter. I bought all the parts needed for $100 and will probably do this myself as well. All things considered this is a very solid and reliable car if you keep up on routine maintenance.

    Hey, glad you’ve had a pleasant experience owning the car. This is really awesome to hear. One thing I think really worth noting is that you bought one, like you said, that had two of the common issues addressed right before you bought it. This is always good news for the next owner. Had you bought this before the SMG pump and the clutch went out, you would have had to have been the one to bite the bullet on those expensive repairs. Either way, it’s an amazing car, but Doug is absolutely right when he says, “buy one that has had the common issues addressed and it’ll be the best decision you ever made. Buy one that hasn’t, and it’ll break your heart” lol. Anyway, thanks for sharing. Will be seeing the rest of your ownership experience with the car

    My dad has one of these alongside X5M. He daily's the SUV and the car just sits. The SUV has had in my estimation about $14k in repairs. What doesn't make sense to me is why GM can make a NA car like Z06 that makes 500hp and that's reliable as hell, and BMW still can't. Some of the issues my dad's SUV encountered, the dealer techs couldn't figure out. People from corporate had to be called in. Makes no sense.

    • @AlexGray
      @AlexGray  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree, it’s too bad GM’s cars (besides Cadillac) don’t have the luxury to go with it like bmws. Other than the Z06 overheating issue, most of their cars are bulletproof. Obviously the v10 had its fair share of issues, but the F10 from what it seems has a lot less to worry about and is pretty tough. What kind of issues has your dad’s X5M had? I really like those and have considered one next.

    BMW's are not made to be driven for short trips, however they're not that bad aside from the common issues on the oil leaks coming from the gaskets. Owned a 2005 550 Manual, 2000 BMW 528i Manual and currently own a 1997 Z3 Manual which is now leaking oil and transmission fluid. Lol. Love the vehicles but I'm done for now. I will sell the Z3 this spring and call it good. Now I own a 2015 Mercedes Benz CLS 550, had it for 6 months and no issues so far. Fingers crossed.

    Bought mine is September (95k km/59k miles). i put in approximately $3000 in repairs since but she is driving good now. Don't always believe that a full service history record means the car is issue free. The M5 of mine and the BMW s1000rr i bought had full bmw service history and "well maintained" however had their fair share of issues. i would recommend buying an ODB2 reader & learn some DIY for the M5 if you looking to purchase an M. reason being with how many sensors the vehicle has and the chain effect you could stop and identify an issue before it becomes really problematic and costly as multiple parts could need changing. last week i got a message on the idrive that i had severe tyre pressure loss. 1 Tyre went out. $600 to replace. Coming from an E36 m3 (236kw) the m5 is a monster in comparison an just pulls in M mode. I dont regret the purchase though at all

I currently own an E39 M5 (2003) and love it greatly, but the milage on the car has me walking on eggs. I purchased the car three years ago (2014) with 188,000 miles on it, and have really not had that many issues with it. Doesn't burn oil, has great acceleration and rides and runs out fine. But still....anyway, thanks for the honest information. It informs my thought process.

    The M5 simply has Expensive Parts and Expensive Engineering. So the key is understanding the the 2 Major problems and being ready to address them before your purchase and after you own the car. Knowledge is Power. Don't be the guy who buys a Honda with a Timing Belt that is about to break and still has all the OEM parts at 200K. Thinking its going to run to 300K even when the parts are still original. As for the SMG Pump and Engine parts. I would collect the parts. Parts are like Buying Tomatoes. If you buy them at the right time and the right season, you can save a ton. I bought OEM parts from Europe that were a fraction of what I would have payed in the USA. These problems should be anticipated. I would replace them ahead of time and use a small shop that I trust and won't rip me off. You can Easily save $5000 just buy making the right decisions.

    I too have an 08 E60 M5 6Sp Manual Trans, purchased over 2 years ago with 39,000 miles. Little did I know how lucky I was that the car came with an extended warranty, I wasn’t really worried about that when looking to buy one. Fast forward 60,000 miles currently, Car has had over $13,000 in repairs! Plus several weeks of not having my car while getting repaired. Sadly I’m sure it’s not over with the repairs. Warranty expired in Aug 2017, I was fortunate to get it extended again, 3 years 30k miles for a mere $5000... If you are interested in this car get a warranty!
    Granted had I not had the warranty I would have done the repairs myself and would have paid a lot less but regardless it would have still sucked!
    Repairs as follows.
    1-ignition coils/spark plugs/ thermostat (sticking) I repaired these myself
    2-Power-steering pump replaced (shop)
    Thigh support motor replaced Pass-side
    3-Alternator over charging/Alt replaced (shop)
    4-Both Throttle body motors replaced
    Vanos solenoids (all 4) replaced (shop)
    Thigh support motor replaced Drive-side
    To be continued...

    NICE INFORMATIVE VIDEO
    Personally I own my E60M5 with SMG since 2005 when I bought it new.
    I maintain the car as it should be, now with 105000 km, not much.
    But I didn't had any issues so far, no repairs.
    Imagine, the clutch is still the original one, the pump not changed yet, no vanos issues, super oil analysis, so the rod bearings are just fine etc. Are we lucky?
    Hope, that you will be free from any repairs also in the future and may enjoy the beast for many years to come.

    • @AlexGray
      @AlexGray  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Wow nice!! So you've had yours for a long time! Hopefully your pump will continue to last. Its weird, some go forever and some like mine go out below 90k miles. My oil analysis was clean too, great to see you having the same positive experience!

      Greg Antono Thats great brother. You’re very lucky :) I just replaced the clutch and did the rod bearing at 89k. Make sure you do the rod bearing very soon. My oil analysis came back good, but I replaced the rod bearing regardless. Surprisedly, they were really worn out! Glad I replaced them on time.

      Arash M6 l I think your are right. I am planning to change them next year, despite the opinion of my mechanic, in whom I have much respect and trust so many years. He is treating all my cars the last 25 years. Himself he is owner of a 08'M6 for about 9 years with quite a lot of km, 190'000, and he didn't change the bearings yet but will do it soon for safety reasons. He told me, that the way I drive the car is exceptional.. although when the engine is warmed up I push it to the limit whenever I can.. τhe engine is built for that, isn't it? :)
      Ιt seems, that I've found a good way probably.
      Because over the years I've heard so much negative opinions about the longevity of the V10, I've put money aside since 2010, and did not need to use it hahaaaa, so I bought another car for my son with that.
      Wishes for a good New Year and crazy safe rides!

    Great video discussing costs, I agree it's not as bad as it could be given the cars performance. My 2006 M5 just had it's SMG pump fail a few months ago at 45K miles. $3200 to replace the pump and accumulator at the dealer which was cheaper than i was expecting. A month later my starter went and that was $1200, nearly all labor as it is buried inside the car.

  • @quarters-eye8922
    @quarters-eye8922 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    My E60 ///M5 was beyond unreliable. It broke down every three months - without fail.
    The Clutch went........then the throttle body actuators.
    While I miss the sound of the V10 - I don't miss the clunking and lurching from the SMG transmission. And I certainly don't miss having to pour a quart of 0w40 in the monster every month, and coughing up for SottoZero Winter tires. If I didn't have the extended maintenance plan and the powertrain plus warranty - I would have been royally screwed - especially on a brake job.
    Anyone who buys an ///M5 without a warranty is off his rocker. I don't mean to sound overly critical - But I've owned BMW's for over ten years - including the E60 M5. You could easily sink 20 grand in repairs and maintenance on the E60 in 6 months without a warranty. The car is just not worth it.

    • @AlexGray
      @AlexGray  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s a shame that yours gave you so much trouble. The actuators seem to be common. And I agree with the oil consumption and the smg being lurchy. To me so far it has been worth it for the v10 exclusivity alone. But when/if I start having actuator issues, vanos, etc it will become too expensive to be worth it.

    • @thegreatpatsy
      @thegreatpatsy 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Well putting 0w 40 in your car will certainly mess it up. This car requires 10w 60 minimum. I do agree it's a headache of a car. Mine has 90k miles and I've already replaced the entire front end, alternator, ac compressor, thermostadt, 2 clutches, spark plugs and coil packs, and I still have tons of issues like cats going bad throwing emissions codes left and right, misfiring, secondary air pump issues, and on and on and on. I'm buying a Porsche, screw this!

    Thanks for the chance at offing feedback. I hope that what ever you share with us will be done in YOUR WAY, THE WAY YOU WANT IT LOOK AND FEEL AND SOUND AND DELIVER; Your true passion and enthusiasm perks my ears up and keeps me focused. This is the first time I have seen any of your videos because I have an opportunity to buy an M5, V10, E60. Everything you teach me provide me with more and more ammunition to us against the battle with my wife over this opportunity. IT IS ALL ABOUT OPPORTUNITY AND IMPACT. AND Brother do you make an IMPACT, for which I am appreciative. Good luck on your journey this year and remember, the small step by step changes you make may not always be so obvious to us, but when you are at the destination you have target to reach, you will look back and see the little progressions, while you might think aren't going to matter, will have made an enormous IMPACT OVERALL looking back. Who knows, maybe its the path you are supposed to take, helping outhers with your knowledge and such so that we get hyped to work harder toward achieving our goals. The first video has made a positive impact on me and I wanted to let you know that. What I would love to see is product placement ads where I can simply click on your sweatshirt and a new tab will open to the site selling that exact item at the best price possible online. Or take as a connection to your own group of 3.3 thousand that most, if not all, would love to be exposed to cool things we might not have ever seen before and decide to want it and get it. Then, you be the exclusive seller of what ever it is you have lined up show by show. I am American, but I live in South Korea, I would love to talk to you about working together in some way so that so many awesome creations, from clothing to windshield wipers, and anything imaginable inbetween, relative to motorheads,is offered through you and with quick turn over time as well. Follow me? This is an idea that just sprang up in my heard as I was finshing the sentence that started off saying, "The first video..."
    Just the same. I am a fan and appreciate your time, creativity, generosity, and sharing of knowledge openly and respectfully. You know some Vlogs go on as if I am supposed to know what the hell this and that means when they are using expressions I have never heard, intermixed with, "Awesome" and "Unreal" and "Super" and like five other descriptive words.
    You offer something fresh and as a car lover and learner of things I love, you certainly give me what I need, hope for, and want.

    Even at $8000 that's still a lot of money for most people. And you can not deny there have been issue with M5 it's well documented.With that being said not all M5's have issue. In defense of M5 Owning any German car out of warranty can be expansive I know from experience.
    I've been driving for 37yrs and never ever come close to spending $8k in repairs let alone $11k. In that time I've owned 26 cars everything from American muscle cars, JDM and German cars. One of my favorite cars that I currently own 2011 ISF that purchased new has 90k, 17 track days, is DD that is FBO + Tune with nothing more than normal maintenance rotors, pads, oil, tires etc. I'm spoiled with that one.
    I will tell you this E60M5 with that V10 hi revving 8400rpm motor matched to Akrapovic exhaust and tune sounds epic what motor!!! Match it with right suspension rims and tires you have car that is still competitive much newer cars. There will never be another BMW like it ever again. So as long as you go in with your eyes open knowing what possible cost can be it shouldn't be problem.

    Ive got a 07 M6 with 72,000 and had to replace the clutch, smg pump, the thermostat and i had all that done at an independant and i payed 7 grand for the pump , clutch, new trans fluid of course and all the labor. I payed no tax because i payed in cash. The thermostat was another 700. After that i needed new rotors and brakes, and they wanted 3500 to do all that. There was no way, so i bought the parts for around a 1 grand and did the work myself. The cost of repairing this vehicle are extraordinary, but i love the car. Its a LOVE/Hate relationship...lol. Now i have some other things i need to repair but they re small (license plate lights, ash tray cover and one of my paddle shifters) Then ill do some regular maintenance. Im still hoping to find that one stretch of road i can let her eat, and break the 160 ive had it going so far.

    You do not have to replace the whole SMG pump unit. Although every dealer/shop will tell you so. I got 4 separate quotes saying I needed to replace mine, ranging from $7k to $12k. However, after doing a lot of research I decided to do it myself: I bought the PUMP MOTOR only, some new fluid and a scanner tool for bmw. I spent around $1,000 and 1 full day in my house's garage (would probably take 2-3 hours if I had done it in a shop) and fixed it. Several months later and it runs perfect!
    If you own an M5 with a SMG issue, tell them to just replace the SMG MOTOR and save a bunch! (Only the motor goes bad, the rest of the parts rarely go bad on a SMG unit )

But im still thinking about e60..exhaust note, look,handling are for shure much better than e55 amg but im concearned about handling..its not much of a problem to swap rod bearings at first oil change,or even buy car with shot engine and swap it or rebuild (have own shop ) This video makes me think about m5 again, i dont do much miles a year but i drive hard so propably blowing engine in my hand would be easier than in someone who ride it slow. The title clearly says “one year”, not sure how you expected 120k from that. But had you watched the entire video you would’ve seen that I also went over the receipts from the previous owner, who basically had the car since new. So in fact I did go over all repairs until my current mileage 110k.

    I spend at least $4000 per year on my 2002 X5 4.4i. One more $6000 repair and my mechanic can not find another thing to fix. That item will be the timing chain, water pump and valve cover gasket.
    I like the car and its pretty new considering I replaced everything on it including the subframe.

    I love the E60 M5 I always wanted one. But growing older and understanding that cars are a liability I have avoided buying one. Main reason the markup value on parts is just crazy, compared to the actual resale value of the car just makes no sense. And good luck trying to get parts the same day if the car breaks down. It's like BMW designs their cars to be trouble free before 60k miles. Good luck with your car man, she is looking good

    That’s really good! I love the V10 M5! If I ever owned one, I would buy it in the manual. Though you haven’t had any repair costs as of yet, you will, and having the manual would be he cheaper way to go, and also the funner transmission. You did the right thing finding an M4 SMG that’s had the pump and clutch replaced already. Those are two of the biggest costs of repairs for the car.
    I own an E46 M3, and after shelling out a lot of $$ for a mechanic to work on my car back in the day, I learned that the car isn’t that hard to work on. Now that I have a garage, I only take it to mechanics if it’s software related. Anything else, I do myself. The same would go if I owned the E60 M5

    My 2010 M5 owned for 2 years.. cost $15000.00 in repairs. I had to rebuild the engine because of hydro lock and took out left bank of cylinders. So what I've done..had to bore and sleeve the engine, 90thou overbore, new 12.5 - 1 Carillo pistons, new H-beam Carillo rods, new engine stud kit, new HP bearings.

    Here here! I've owned my 2006 for 6 years now. Now with 90K on the odometer, the only major issues I've had are the SMG clutch and main computer unit. I've spent about $8,000 in repairs over six years. I think all the bad rap comes mostly from those who drove the car too hard. Specifically, full throttle upshifts. The fastest way to accelerate is to set the SMG on the fastest setting, and just upshift without lifting off the throttle. This is incredibly hard on the whole drive train though. If you drive like that all the time, you're just begging for trans and diff failures.

    V10 bmws and mercedes have had many problems in the past, I'm sure new cars are more reliable but don't think because your new model has not had any problems yet that people just hate on them for no reason, most of the hate is warranted. The thing about BMWs is - trying to fix it yourself is really just a bigger pain than it needs to be - so used BMW out of warranty makes no sense for the average car enthusiast. And dude, 20,000 miles a year is just a above average, I would still call that normal but not a high mileage hero.

  • @carloswells8469

    SMG hydro unit has been on backorder for apprx 2 years so its almost impossible to locate outside the dealer, who also has people/shops in line to receive the few that they're releasing every few months. So realistically the unit will run about $6500, before labor, clutch, and dual mass flywheel. I'd say about $10k is spot on for cost expectancy.

    Thanks for the video.. I have my 08 6 speed manual for exactly a year now and have done 6K HARD miles. It was very well maintained by the previous owner when I bought it at 78k miles. Still mostly stock with just a Supersprint X pipe, pulley, BMC filter, and KW V3's.. have done several roll races and a couple of dig runs, and always spirited near redline runs when the family is not with me. Will be doing trackdays next year. Knock on wood it never gave me any issues. Only thing is the oil - this bad boy didnt like Liqui Moly as it was having lifter noises. So I stayed with TWS. I have already changed the oil twice and Blackstone readings look good for copper @ 3. And of course the rear tires.. you gonna replace them frequently even if you dont even try.. haha.. Going to get a nice dyno tune locally and have the rod bearings done this May after the warranty expires. And to top this off its also a roomy family car - my 26 month old daughter loves how it sounds =).. I have the luxury of having several vehicles so this car only comes out on a totally dry day and special occasions. Overall, a great reliable car that never disappoints. Always in M mode.. Love it!

      Congrats on finding a manual! They are very hard to find. Funny your car didn’t like the liquimoly, that’s all I use now. My car burned through the bmw Castrol very quickly but with liquimoly I’m having to add a lot less between changes. I had a clean blackstone report too, hopefully our cars continue to be reliable for us, especially during track use. Have fun and take care!

    That's awesome the M5 was pain free. I owned a 2006 X5 4.4 special sport package years ago as the 2nd owner. Relatively low miles with service records and clean carfax. 260+K e61 M5 touring, owned it from new, it's at circa its purchase price in running costs (BMW, the same dealer who registered it) but, despite its costs, that S85 with its hint of five-cylinder warble, ruinous costs, crap mpg, dire build quality - especially coming from an e38 - the e61 is flawed in so many ways, yet just so much more epic than it's reputed to be.

    With respect to the pump. It mostly is not necessary to replace the whole pump - just the pump motor which is a $400-$600 part.
