  • Fishing in Mamala Bay of Oahu in hawaii, I managed to catch 2 opelu early in the morning. Wanting to get on the major bite time I headed out to the ledge in 200+ feet of water. I didn't get any action in the major bite and then managed to drown my first bait. Before using the second opelu I dropped the first now dead bait to the bottom and managed to hook into what I thought was an uku. It grew as the fight went on and turned into a pretty big Kawa Kawa. With the second live bait out in 300 feet I was cut off by what I think was an ono, based on the cleanly cut line. After losing my second opelu I put on a bait strip and started trolling. Shorty after an aha attacked my bait strip. It was a fun trip overall, but not the outcome I had hoped for. The Kawa Kawa was turned to poke for a friends party.

    The water looks pretty calm. Was this recent? It has looked super rough the last two weekends when looking out from shore.

      This was last week sometime. The wind was probably less than 15 knots. My work schedule mostly allows for mid week trips.

      That’s always nice to go out when the water isn’t crowded. It almost feels special to be off when everyone else works.

    Im' curious....Do the sharks ever mistake your kayak as a fish on the surface?

    • @FlyingFish_TV
      @FlyingFish_TV  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have had sharks come check me out from 20 feet away or so. More often I think they are just swimming by on the surface and I happen to notice them. While bringing a fish in they will chase it all the way to the kayak.

    What you use for bait to catch your opelu on the sabiki rig? Just moved here so I’m trying to get the scoop on how it’s done. Nice fish.

      I use a size 4 gold limerick hook with a small red bead. The grub is up to you however, I prefer to use completely hooked lures minnows in the nox color.

    • @FlyingFish_TV
      @FlyingFish_TV  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you randomly end up fishing the same place on the same day, yes. Aside from that I can't let everyone come along.
