    What happens when dirt goes into our nose? Our reaction is to immediately sneeze and often in a violent way. This reflex of the human body forces the material out in the quickest way possible. But what happens when something external enters the mind? Something like strong emotions, particularly negative ones. Let’s say, for example, the pain of losing your daughter. Often there are no automatic reflexes to cleanse the mind of these feelings because we tend to suppress them if our mind feels that they are socially inappropriate to express. These thoughts don’t lie dormant in the mind forever. They often try to come out.
    Taylor Sheridan’s directorial debut Wind River does an excellent job at showing us the unfolding of these emotions. Before we move on, we have to make a quick separation between two types of films. 20th-century british philosopher R.G. Collingwood drew a distinction between what he called Amusement Art and Magic Art. Amusement Art is what you see in movies like Star Wars or The Lord of the Rings, it helps the audience escape from reality and dive into a fictional world after a stressful day. Magic Art, on the other hand is the type of art in movies like No Country for Old Men or Wind River, which represent a view of this world’s reality.

    “I got some good news and I got some bad news... Bad news is your never going to be the same.. you lost your daughter... Nothings ever going to replace that. And the good news is as soon as you accept that, and let yourself suffer... You allow yourself to visit her in your mind you remember all the love she gave and joy she knew.” Wow... amazing writing. Sheridan is truly a rising star and rennet was so great in this movie

    Underrated masterpiece. Such a heart wrenching film. And holy hell, Renner's subtle performance was Oscar worthy, he should've been nominated. Great video, I subscribed.

    Wind River is a powerful movie. It's one of those movies that stays with you long after you watch it. Jeremy Renner gives a powerful performance and is a badass in this movie. Just watching this video is making me want to watch it again. I'm gonna watch it right now!

      A Matter of Film nothing beats the first time. But it still had me crying when Jeremy Renner' s character came over to his friends house after he found his friends daughters body. When his friend hugged him and started wailing, man that just gave me chills and me crying. It's still a very powerful movie ever after watching it a second time

    Holy shit, such an exquisite analysis. Shame this movie wasn't really brought up in any film discussions last year, because this was without a doubt my favorite. Right down to the atmosphere, the performances, and of coarse the immaculately written screenplay by Sheridan. Cannot wait for whatever he does next.

    I loved this film. Thought the acting and message were just above what expected. It was also shot just so well, many shots evoke emotions not seen in many mainstream movies.
    Also, this film got me to watch Hell and High Water and Sicario both of those films are worth a watch as well.

    I liked Wind River's attention to the native issues that plague Canada as much as they do our southern neighbour. Unfortunately the reservation in this film looked all too much like the reservations I have visited.

    • @ArthurDent12
      @ArthurDent12 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Taylor Sheridan lived with the Eastern Soshone and Northern Arapaho at the Pine Ridge Reservation for years. It was his native friends that gave him the idea to tell their story.

    Wowwww, yes. Catharsis is why I watch drama...emotional healing through art...perhaps visual empathy. But wind river was not an experience I processed easily. I still think about it, and I saw it months ago.

  • @tonyweaver2353
    @tonyweaver2353 6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    I wish I saw this sooner, I felt the exact same way. I went too long without sadness or despair. I went looking for it, and it found me. I am afraid I will have to deal with it for a few years instead of being able to experience catharsis in a healthy way through art. I knew you couldn't expel those repressed emotions through "talking". It is only through art that we can fully feel relieved and put back into balance again. Thanks for the great analysis.

    This is a fantastic piece regarding a fantastic movie. Your analysis of both this film and Drive are compelling and really add so much more depth than what meets the eye. Thank you so much for your insight! Wind River and Sicario both are on my top ten all-time favorite movies. A lot of people scoff when I tell them about Wind River because it sounds so boring and cliche, but so rarely does a movie grip you, reel you in, and give you the biggest kick to the gut and the greatest feeling of redemption. THAT is drama. Drama is the ultimate form of art, I think, and Wind River is definitely near the top of the spear.
    The scene where Renner's character visits the victim's father for the first time is one of the best movie scenes and performances of all time, hands down. It's absolutely incredible how you can get driven to tears without even seeing someone. The actors aren't even on screen, and yet it becomes the most memorable part of the entire film. That part alone is reason alone why people should watch this movie

    One thing Wind River does really well that many other movies never show is the different power level of guns. A group of about 8 people all within 10-15 feet apart shooting hand guns at each other and hitting each other in the bodies. Can and do shot some people but hand guns are really not very powerful and after a certain distance get weaker. A high powered Rifle is a completely different animal. Shot someone from 100 feet away you will probably blow them away and that’s something a handgun will never do.

    They do have statistics up here in Canada and 21 relatives and friends that are apart of the MMIW. I had a hard time watching this movie, my ptsd was going through the roof. I couldn’t stop crying because the only thing that kept happening is that could seeing all their faces and hear all their laughs and cries. I feel their all their pain.

    That is one theory. For some, emotional binging can easily become a way to escape reality for a time in an unhealthy way. It can become obsessive and compulsive. This is addiction and it can happen with any activity that takes us away from reality for a short time. Whether watching TV, eating foods high in sugar or eating too much, drinking booze, having sex, gambling, etc. But touching the 3rd rail often, though not always, comes with an initial hyper-intense rush. The thought, this is awesome, why haven't I been doing this before?! This is a warning that you should walk away and never do this again. If you're lucky, this is possible. For something like eating or sex, this is more problematic.

    All tough I don't agree with the definition of amusement art like you try to pin on star Trek, Star Wars and Lord of the Rings. For me that is also very heavy storytelling with a lot of meaning and messages for different people. True art like it has always been.
