    Taylor Sheridan is one of the best writers working today. Wind River caught me off guard, Hell and High Water was a pleasant surprise of last year, and Sicario is one of my favorite movies of all time. Definitely looking forward for his future work.

    Fargo really felt like a neo western. Particularly the scene where the Gerharts come for Ed and find the sheriff guarding the house. That standoff was so intense

Especially the idea of characters making their own rules, which is a prevalent theme throughout the show.I'd love to see a video on Fargo (the show), especially considering how great your essay of the movie was.It's been a great for your channel and I can't wait to see what you come out with next year!

    I just gave Hell or High Water a 2nd viewing over the New Years weekend. The final scene with the former ranger menacing the former bank robber resonated. The ex ranger contends that 4 deaths are on the hands of the surviving bank robber even though he didnt actually kill anyone. I began to think how the ranger was driven to go after the bank robbers that eventually lead to 2 deaths. Most of the characters we are shown did not find it urgent to apprehend the bank robbers; fellow cops, citizens and even some bank workers overlooked the robberys. The former ranger never sees his own actions leading to tragedy. All the time corporations, the rich and military organizations (like law enforcement) break laws like murder and justify it to themselves and the world. I would have to watch the movie closer again if they do also portray the law officer as morally ambiguish. I mean its hard not to identify with characters played by Jeff Bridges.
    On a related note i also watched a movie by Paul Haggis this weekend called In the Valley Of Elah. It came out the same year as No Country For Old Men and also is set in Texas with a crusading Tommy Lee Jones. The film is worth you seeing and considering as a part of expanded analysis of Neo-Western, or Neo-Noir. I like how the movie captures a current event (the US invasion in Iraq) made in the style that would attract pro-war audiences but has a strong commentary about war culture and how young men are made into monsters.

    I couldn't agree more with MrSquifler, Sheridan is easily one of my favorite writers now. I just stumbled upon a trailer for "Yellowstone", and thought immediately "that's gotta be Sheridan." I was right and can't wait to see another quality written, superbly directed, great acted movie. He seems to get the best of the best actors for his movies. Why wouldn't they be drawn to excellent an script.
    Keep 'em coming Taylor, you have a HUGE standing ovation audience.

    Loved the video, love Taylor Sheridan's work. Wind River destroyed me emotionally. Cautiously optimistic about Sicario 2. Minor nitpick, you pronounced Fausto's name as "Fusta", heh.

    • @truefilm1556
      @truefilm1556 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +A Shogun Named Juan - yeah, (South American) Spanish is sometimes tricky to pronounce. In Spain (the parts where they speak standard Castilian aka Spanish), (as you of course know), they would pronounce him as: "Fauh-to" (no "s"). And nearby in Portugal, the same name is pronounced "Faush-too".
      Well I just know this, because I happen to live in Portugal and know a few people from Spain (one even from Barcelona, where they speak Catalan, not Castilian - very different).
      But yeah, a closer pronunciation in English would be Fausto, but as you said: minor nitpick.

    • @MBloke
      @MBloke 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      truefilm Good points, I was thinking South American spanish (specifically Mexico because of the character) but yeah, pronunciation is a tricky thing and there's not a right way necessarily.
      I'm curious, what are your thoughts on Sicario 2?

    • @truefilm1556
      @truefilm1556 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A Shogun Named Juan - well I wasn't "defending" anyone. You were right to begin with. Just wanted to point out that it can be tricky.
      Sicario 2: just watched the trailers. It can be anything from a great sequel to a personal story - or a violent "shoot 'em all!" run of the mill badass follow up. Anyway: anything with Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin in it: I am already excited.

If it's not too much of a burden, I'd love it if you could include a title from the movie in the lower corner of the screen for clips and shots. Great video nonetheless. Thanks.

    do you think realism can be a potential for Neo-Western? I know that "realism" is the last thing that people can be profitable in the Western genre, but there are plenty of amazing but untold real life stories, as well as real social problems, about the contemporary American West. Maybe that can be a frontier for the future Western movies.

    • @truefilm1556

      Caitin Pendley - well I think most of the Coen Brothers' work is much closer to neo noir than neo western. The difference being that fate vs. choice, greed and things going south are the main themes. Fargo (the feature film) is, when stripped down, about a greedy loser with a bad "plan" to get him a better life, - he had it coming. That's a variation of classic noir (like most Coen Brothers' movies, who "got" what noir was/is really about, then add a TON of irony and dark humor).

    Does anyone else think neo westerns are better than westerns?

    I really really love Hell or High Water and I superadore Sicario (easily the best movie of 2015). Wind River was a tad underwhelming but ... it's a directorial debut. He'll get a critical pass on that one.

    I can tell you right now the truck convoy is no bullshit stuff like that actually happens. Think how the church shooter was stopped.

    Great videos but I think you should change the channel name before you grow more, "Jacks movie reviews" isn't memorable or special as a name

    Nice video on the gerne, very well put together too. I think you make a lot of problematic claims about for instance new country for old men as a certain starting point or later on in the video human nature. From a scholarly perspective you should put your claims into perspective with more care. You will find no such absolute claims in relevant writings on the gerne (Slotkin, Wright among many, many others) or in the field of literary/film critcism. Don't want to be a party pooper, hope my words are received in the spirit in which they are intended. Have fun researching!
