  • Liquid poly glue is crap in general, but especially if you let it sit for two years unused. Never again!
    If you are just doing the woodworking as a hobby, there's no point in buying those big gallon bottles of glue to thicken up and get moldy. Buy the small one instead - it'll last weeks for most hobbyists and by then the bottle is worn out, the nozzle is plugged or you've lost the cap. Embrace disposability!

      This may be BS but I was told that PVA wood glue should not be stored anywhere it can freeze as this will damage it and weaken joints.

      So, the Titebond poly glues has become my go-to glue, mostly because the foaming makes cleaning up the squeeze-out really easy. The fact that it isn't water base seems advantageous as well; no need to worry about the glue making pieces swell when fitting them together. I certainly agree that the shelf life is shorter than a PVA or aliphatic resin glue, but I've been able to go through most of a twelve-ounce bottle in a year. I've never had trouble with bond strength. Is there something I'm missing?

    • @christopherfeld6371
      @christopherfeld6371 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'll add that I don't like it for biscuited joints, because the swelling from a normal wood glue can actually be helpful.

    My favorite glue bottle is still the mustard bottle that I saw you using about maybe 3 years ago. I now pour my gallon wood glue into mustard bottles and use it from there. Seems I get another mustard bottle just about when the old one's cap is breaking off and getting too crudded up. I'll always remember you John as the mustard bottle woodworking guy. That's how I describe you when talking to my brothers. Then they say, "Oh, yeah I know that guy. He's that really clever woodworking guy who uses construction adhesive."

    Hi John it looks like the glue you left alone for 2 years is a polyurethane glue. It would be similar to the construction adhesive you like so much. I use such glues extensively if I need to glue something like out door furniture that would get into contact with moisture. It is quite good, but have a shelf life less than 24 months. All the best for 2020, I enjoy your videos

    I had exactly the same problem with the same glue here in the UK. Actually used a bit out of one bottle then had to throw it away. Tip - screw lid in tight and keep inverted, then trapped air etc. gets hardened at the bottom/ Same applies to Poly varnish.

    Love your vids, been watching many years. Hey... PRO TIP...Store Gorilla Glue in a zip lock bag with those little drier packets from new products. Also dont store in extreme temps like garage/workshop. I live in Phoenix Arizona...garages can get 160 degrees. NOTHING liquid survives. All paints, glues, caulking, automotive chems go bad. Im sure the same is true for cold climates For me, snow is for visiting, not living in. BTW open time for Titebond II in Phx. summer....10 seconds. I like your idea of building glue (contractor type).

    I use titebond III ultimate wood glue bought a 16 oz bottle about 3 years ago to finish a project in my garage it has sat in the new mexico heat until last week when i grabbed it off the shelf for a project and the glue is perfect. I only use the titebond products for the last almost 18 years and have never had an issue. I had one issue once after about an hour of the glue setting i noticed i was misaligned on a work bench i was building and i ended up having to use a sledge hammer to break the 2 pieces of apart that is how strong this glue had held the 4x4 leg to a 8' 2x8 it was crazy totally my fault but as for the strength that is the only glue i will ever use after that experience. BUT i have had similar experience with gorilla glue once opened it seems to have a short life if not used and left sitting but never use that ever that stuff anymore.

    I decided to build a cabinet for the garage and figured that it would be too heavy to move fully assembled so I'm going to finish it in the garage. It's currently around freezing outside and only slightly warmer in the garage so after watching this channel for years I'm finally going to try it.

    What if the doors for the lumber rack were clear or at least had windows? That way the wood doesn't gather dust but you can still see what is in there. And because it doesn't blend in to the background, it comes to mind more often.

  • @andrewv5104
    @andrewv5104 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I've done the math and where I buy glue the break even point is 1/4 gallon of glue used per year. If i used 1/4 of a gallon per year I'll use at least 1/2 a gallon before it goes bad putting the price per ml of glue used identical. I almost ALWAYS use more than 1/4 gallon per year so it makes sense for me to buy a gallon jug and use ketchup bottlers for dispensers. (this is comparing the 500ml bottles to the gallon bottles the smaller the bottle the higher the cost per ml so using the 150ml bottles like you suggest it's closer to 1/8 gallon used per year).
    Keep in mind John you do use a lot of PU construction adhesive, not everyone does that. I have no comment on good bad or otherwise if it sticks and is stronger than the wood IDGAF what the adhesive is. Don't hate me because I like math and I'm contrary to your opinion I'm just offering it for you no malice intended. This is also for me and where I buy glue that may not be the same for everyone. I also DGAF if i throw away a half gallon as long as i get my money's worth out of it. In all honesty 50% of glue gets wasted to squeeze out anyway which is a necessary evil...

    • @IBuildItScrapBin
      @IBuildItScrapBin  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My opinion is strictly based on convenience and ensuring that the glue I'm using is at maximum strength. Economy wasn't a factor, since glue probably works out to be the least expensive supply for woodworking. I spend much more on screws than glue and massively more on wood and sheet stock.

    I have three Glue Bricks on my shelf. I bought it to repair dining room chair rungs as needed. There are six chairs and they fail in different areas..at different times. So I purchase a bottle of glue to fix one or two rungs - use a very small amount and put it on the shelf. 6 months later another rung fails and the glue has turned rock hard in the bottle. So, I paid over $5 per bottle to get maybe 15 drops at most and then it hardens IN the sealed bottle. No smaller bottles are available in that type. Now, I have three "bricks" and need to fix another rung...Grrrr. I know your pain.

    Quite a generalisation about glue. I've had unopened bottles of Titebond poly for years that are still OK. I know the shelf life is greatly reduced once opened and exposed to air, so I buy a size appropriate to my current needs. There is no glue that's ideal for all circumstances e.g. oily wood like rosewood and teak, or for laminating or for gluing plywood to metal etc..

Guesstimating from that, you might have around a quarter million visible comments on your channels combined. Not quite a million, but within an order of magnitude :)
