I moved here 11 years ago this May and immediately converted the garage into a woodworking shop where i made hundreds of projects and videos. I'll miss it but its time for a change. The (now) old shop will be converted back to a garage this summer and my new shop will be set up in my much smaller shed, but how it gets there and what will be inside will be interesting.
I’m very excited to see the new smaller shop and the wall-mounted saw. I started following your channel 6 or 7 years ago, and converted a corner of my basement into a 99 square-foot shop that is amazingly operational for our needs. I resided our house, build 100 odd projects and bits of furniture, and remodeled our basement out of that shop.
I'm so glad you’re 3D printing. Your approach to design & strength will be a great addition to the community. Not a lot of people in 3d printing have decades of woodworking knowhow.

Welcome to the fun world of 3D Printjng. I’ve been doing it on TH-cam for 10years. I’ve been recommending them for woodworkers for years. You should try wood embedded PLA. You can print it, then sand it, stain it. Hatchbox makes a great wood filament.
My experience with hatchbox wood PLA is that it has issues sticking to the build plate which isnt surprising when I realized wood isnt sticky. I prefer just using brown PLA+ if im going for a woodish look because PLA+ is very sandable where as normal PLA isnt.
@@VERY_MAD_ALIEN - I’ve never had that issue with any wood filament. But a little glue stick helps any print if necessary. By adjusting the temp you can actually control the color of the wood too so you can get a light or dark wood look or adjust it mid print to get different color tones without staining.
My Jorgensen screw clamps work exactly the way you describe changing yours to. I'm always impressed with your designing skills. You ought to patent some of that stuff. The sanding blocks look like good candidates.

Im a designer in a machine shop. I was thrilled when company bought a 3-D printer. It was very expensive and the spools of material were crazy expensive. Cool that prices have come down for the hobby level.

Been an avid viewer for many years now, have learnt a lot from you. Skills and experience are built up over time and you constantly develop and improve. Bought a cheap 3D printer about six months and have not used it much. Did not want to just print and stupid stuff. Again a new skill I have to learn, using tinkercad for basic designs. Only recently did I learn you could scale files to fit printer bed 😊. My plan is to create jigs and fixings for improving my woodwork in my basic small shed.
Can’t wait to see that new shop setup. The x/y “table saw” sounds like those big saws you see in the big box stores. H.D. and Lowes. I’ve been using freeCad for a couple years and find it easy to use. Had a rather steep learning curve as it has several different “work benches” to do different functions. There’s a couple of good weekly TH-cam tutorials that teach it from the basic to more involved modeling features.
Understanding the click bait title now, understanding you would like to end the endless reconfigurations. Change is good but pleasure time becomes more valuable when we get older. Enjoy what you have earned getting here.

Love the renewed enthusiasm, John! There's no doubt your woodworking skills are top notch, but your design and engineering skills have always been next level to me. Sure, those sanding pad parts are relatively "easy" to spit out on a 3D printer, but you had to not only figure out the mechanics, but how to make it work with individual parts you could make from plastic! I think you've been fibbing all these years about being in the construction trade. Admit it, you were an engineer at NASA, right?

John, I've been following you for several years and always enjoyed seeing how came up with clever solutions with the tools and projects you build. I've been 3d printing for a few years and can't wait to see what you do with 3d printing.
I took a 3d printing class at a makerspace because I wanted to know more about 3d printing and I had maybe one or two items in mind for printing. I was hooked immediately. Since that first class I have had an endless stream of "needs" to print.
I purchased my first 3D printer in Feb 2018. Last Dec I upgraded to a CoreXY fully enclosed fast printer. The fast speed really helps. I use my 3D printer for making parts to fix things, or parts for wood work/turning jigs. As you said, some things are easier with the 3D printer than making by hand. I would not want to be without a 3D printer these days. I also use FreeCAD. A lot of CAD features, just a steep learning curve. Dave.
It was interesting to watch the video. One thing that kept occurring to me was that you seemed to be more excited about the 3D printer than the CNC mill. Also, years ago (early 2000's) I believed that 3D printing was not worth it until we got to a place that a 3D printer was as easy to set up and a laser printer, or ink jet printer. We are basically at that place now. I bought a 3D printer 7 or 8 years ago, and it was a pain, and I could basically do a better job in wood, faster. Now I am reconsidering a new one, because it's mostly automatic, including multi materials. As always great work. Thanks!
Wood is probably the most versatile material to construct so many things. But being able to 3D print parts for tools to make wood projects or to make parts that enhance a wood project is a game changer.
Great to see your excitement! We are still here to follow along. Though TH-cam is a bit one sided in that you reach us much more than we reach you, it is still a relationship worth having! As a retired electrical engineer, I enjoy woodworking because I can touch and see what I have made. Designing or programming an integrated circuit, well, you see nothing until it makes something else function. And so I see CNC and printing as different expressions of creativity. CNC especially! Almost like replacing the template in routing! So looking forward to your changes and wishing you the best as always!

That saw sounds like something else. A bit like the panel saw at HD maybe where it will cut right to left and up and down. I remember when the first 3d printed gun came out. It was called "The Liberator" which fired a single shot. I still keep up with them a bit and these days what can be printed is wild and is improving every year. The things that will be able to be printed in years to come is something I'm looking forward to. Having the freedom to come up with an idea and see it come to reality.
Nice to see your designs if ease of manufacturing only involves assembly. Not the parts itself. I think your strength with all your jigs and other designs is the ability to simplify the design of the individual parts and assembly so people can actually build it.
Welcome to the club. I got my first 3D printer about 5 months ago. Started small and just upgraded to the X1C. My favorite woodworking print was an attachment to my shooting board. I made the Mike Pekovich version that uses a construction square for the 45 degree angle. I needed a 58.9 degree angle for some cross pieces on a planter. I just created it in SketchUp and printed it. Perfect solution. Took less than 20 min to design, and it printed while I was doing something else. Are you making your 3D designs available?
I brought 2 3D Printers with the thought of designing things to make. I can’t find a CAD platform that I am comfortable using. I purchased them a year ago and they sat idle for about 7 months.
John’s rockin’ the summer look! Pretty ballsy considering this is Canada and here in the west I’m watching the half foot of snow we just got melt down (again).
John you are not wrong. The 3D print is at the stage where it's just an appliance and has a much easier entry point for the average tinkerer. Even some of the CAD software, like Tinker CAD, has become easier to use for the average person. Hell you don't even need to know CAD as there are millions of designs available for free.

3D printing is a great tool. I don’t see it completely replacing woodworking. Wood can be a beautiful finish for items in the home. Sintered metal or plastic, not so much. I’m a retired engineer who has used a lot of 3D printing in my career, so it’s not like I’m unfamiliar with it.
I have a printer I really, really need to learn to use. I’ll try that free cad program you were talking about. If I can get smooth enough prints I’d like to start printing wave guides for tweeters.

Well... You can do a lot with 3d printing, woodworking or anything else, John. And a 3d printer is like a CNC, it's just another tool. 😊 BTW, it's too bad you're not into rc... Because a 3d printer is a treasure for rc! Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
The big downside of 3D printed pieces is their stiffness... Like, for example, 3D printed clamps... It's just for fun... If you tighten them a bit, they crack!... It's still plastic... 3D printing is a real plus... but it definitely doesn't replace wood.

Fusion360 hobby license??? Is free. And more powerful. At least it would seem more appropriate. One workflow for cnc and 3d printer. Parametric modelling, simulation, etc etc etc. sell models of your clamps and get millions carved.

I hate to say it but I am a little disappointed. 3D printing and CBC crap technology should be used exclusively by people who have no skills and talent. Exploring it as a curiosity is one thing. But it destroys creativity and skill. Does pushing a button on a drum machine make a person a drummer? It’s really the same thing. Yes, you apply creativity to plot out a design on a computer screen and input the program into the 3D printer, but the machine is doing the magic, not you. A table saw is a tool, but applying robot arms and grabbers to slide wood around its table to be manipulated to make shapes based on a program that directs the arms around requires zero skill. As a viewer I have zero interest in seeing something created by a machine. It’s a sad end.
I get your point and I agree for the most part. But, for example, do you use a calculator? Or do you work everything out on paper or in your head? Do you use computer to communicate? Obviously you do, but would you rather do it all face to face? Likewise with the telephone - it's a tool that makes doing a task easier. Likewise with a fridge and stove in a kitchen, or a toilet in the washroom, or car or a radio in that car. They are all technological advance that make this easier to do and take less time. 3D printing can take the place of skill that otherwise would not be developed. It may free someone to do what he otherwise could not do, because he has no natural talent for the skills required.

Polyurethane construction adhesive, yes! I have to take another shot!

I was going to ask what you thought of your new acquisition, your 3d printer, but your enthusiasm was very plain. I also wanted to know is a cover necessary for a 3d printer or is it just extra?
Fusion360 hobby license??? Is free. And more powerful. At least it would seem more appropriate. One workflow for cnc and 3d printer. Parametric modelling, simulation, etc etc etc. sell models of your clamps and get millions carved.
I think this is all too advanced for me to comprehend.

I hate to say it but I am a little disappointed. 3D printing and CBC crap technology should be used exclusively by people who have no skills and talent. Exploring it as a curiosity is one thing. But it destroys creativity and skill. Does pushing a button on a drum machine make a person a drummer? It’s really the same thing. Yes, you apply creativity to plot out a design on a computer screen and input the program into the 3D printer, but the machine is doing the magic, not you. A table saw is a tool, but applying robot arms and grabbers to slide wood around its table to be manipulated to make shapes based on a program that directs the arms around requires zero skill. As a viewer I have zero interest in seeing something created by a machine. It’s a sad end.
I get your point and I agree for the most part.
But, for example, do you use a calculator? Or do you work everything out on paper or in your head?
Do you use computer to communicate? Obviously you do, but would you rather do it all face to face?
Likewise with the telephone - it's a tool that makes doing a task easier.
Likewise with a fridge and stove in a kitchen, or a toilet in the washroom, or car or a radio in that car.
They are all technological advance that make this easier to do and take less time.
3D printing can take the place of skill that otherwise would not be developed. It may free someone to do what he otherwise could not do, because he has no natural talent for the skills required.
