DON’T make this mistake! Learn from mine. Basement wall Framing. WINNI

  • I made a Rookie Mistake when framing out my basement wall. All basement walls need to have some type of vapor barrier, and i forgot to add one. So what we had to do is move our new wall out of the wall and make room for 1/2" insulation. When we add this insulation, we not only gain a vapor barrier but we also add some Insulation value to our wall.
I am very proud to post and share my mistakes, because I believe people can learn just as much from them as from tutorial videos. At the end of the day, I am still on my learning journey and I share everything I learn.

Moisture paper not vapor barrier on the bare concrete as it sweats and drops lots of water on the bottom plate and builds mould. Hopefully, the radiant barrier boards are breathable or to circulate the moisture

So this foam can be instead of the fiberglass membrane?

I have just had remediation work done on a basement suite. There was poly on the concrete foundation, framing and batt insulation between the studs. There was then a layer of poly on top of the works, and drywall put on top. It was done long before I owned the property. A lovely sandwich for water ingress. This in Alberta, Canada. Ensure you state what location and what climate your solutions are for. A vapour barrier is not recommended on concrete foundations in some climates.

Nope. Don’t attach the insulation. As soon as you add it to the outer wall it’s reflective property is no longer. It will then bridge the temperature from your outer wall. As it’s only a vapour barrier you need to be careful about dew points and condensation. So really you want a vapour control layer as mention by others. You really want a 1” air gap between both faces and any substrate and all joints sealed.

      Agreed 👍🏽
Now it's just an extension of that wall but in a lesser sense !!
I'm not sure but he may have been better off to apply a " 0 " percent penetration barrier in the form of something he could roll on such as ugly. It is like a white primer but thick and several coats r recommended !!! It's also used on the outside of basement walls before the dirt is pushed back to create an absolutely watertight barrier.
And of course there's other things on the market similar that could be used !!.
And even though it's quote-unquote a interior wall because of its location I would have still use pressure-treated lumber as a sole plate on the floor. Once the sheetrock goes up and everything is taped and mudded that chamber behind will be a continuous moisture area.... A trap if you will ... But he's doing a good job !!!! It is clear from watching him that he has some experience. A bit more than most 👍🏽🤠.
But NONE OF US KNOW UNTIL WE KNOW !!! That comes with learning and/or
Experience from working with others that have more knowledge than we !!
I'd hire him and put him to work same day!!!!
Cream always rises to the top 🤠!!!

The product info spec/ sheet makes decisions easier. But putting that board directly is a joke . The cost of the tubes of grab were prob more than a roll of Vapor barrier 😅

No reason to glue it. Dont know what the exterior looks like but that concrete will sweat for years, probably should have some air gap and exchanged

I thought the silver backing goes against the cement walll hence the moisture barmier

Out of curiosity, is there a reason you're using Paslode nail guns over battery nail guns? Battery operated nail guns have been pretty good the past few years

@Rich Rishel ahh, yea never thought about that. I just knew that they were rebuildable but also needed battery and gas charges.

Good catch. Question, why no 2x4 pt wall plate on the slab? Is that not a code requirement for your area?

Why didn't you use pressure treated for your bottom plate?😮

some states not required treated wood on basement slab if the the wall is not attached to the exterior wall.
      Use vapor barriers on the
      bottom plate or construction glue..

put insulation between studs and then install vapour barrier. Wrong channel

You really should read up on your product choice before you install. Those boards are EXTERIOR use only, not interior use. I contacted the company to confirm, because they were cheaper than the pink foam board and I was looking to complete my basement.

Foam rots too when exposed to moisture. This is not a true "vapor barrier".
