  • Today I will show you how to frame out a basement wall and how to build a header that has some integrated insulation. This is not new construction, this is us renovating our house that needs a top of work. Every week we highlight one project that we do on the house with the hope of inspiring you to do your own.
Please let us know if you have any questions for us:)

Helpful instructions! This benefits on three levels. 1) For the do-it-yourself-er, the step-by-step and simple tools make the process easy to understand and attainable 2) For hiring a pro, understanding the work involved and how things done correctly should look 3) For the person who likes to watch how it's made and not feel like a creep for watching.

KD for who wants to know means Kiln oven dried to remove water in wood cells. What's left in your lumber after is a 19% moisture, which is each cell skin. The reason for that is to have a straight, relatively soft lumber that will be versatile to drive nails without splitting and also easier to put them parallel (mantel, header, partition wall). Then lumber assembly will shrink in size but very little in length. If this is convenient for building, it could also become an issue related to water penatration or lack of insulation. Ex. A 2x6 (1.5x5.5) can easily shrink .25" and breaking your ext. caulking joint or int. silicone floor joint of shower/bath, especially if screwed on fresh ext. Wall. So, new homeowners will be aware of this by doing visual inspections, especially after the first year. For the same gap reason when new window installation within a new rough opening when it comes to the time to choose the insulation. Since lumber shrinks at the waist, it would be preferable to use batt insulation rather than low expending foam. The best is to let air dry once framed.

Can't wait for the next steps of preparing this wall for the window and installing the window. The Build Show has great content on how to create a back dam to ensure no water gets inside to the drywall. Maybe you will also use Zipp products for the exteriro wall? Will be great for years when done right! Thanks for the education!

How do you make sure everything is level or does it not matter but just leveling the windows is what is needed? Cool video though. I don’t even do construction but enjoyed it a lot. 😂

Everything initially in construction is on the level to an extent. The only major thing that matters when it comes to leveling is the main components like the windows, roofing, and doors, plus major load bearings, as an uneven level can weaken the load transfer throughout the system. Going off of the fact that that person is building on an older house, they will attempt to ensure consistency in level throughout the construction to promote a proper stud layout and load transfer to the foundation walling.

Thank you! I need to add a proper header over my back door in my house (it's old and was poorly built). Right now it has a single 2x4 on the flat. Framing is 2x6 so this is perfect. I'll have to replace the jack studs. One is a full inch shorter than the other. Fortunately, the door opens inward so I can make some of the changes without changing the exterior. Still trying to figure out how to deal with the electrical box for the light. I was thinking of 2x4 walls and not 2x6 so adding the extra 2x6 in makes sense.
You also answered my question about the foam board. So 1" thick. I've seen that green stuff at the store. I think Lowes has the green stuff and HomeDepot has pink stuff. Both the same size but I don't know if there is a difference other than color.

rip the bottom sill on table say and do the same I think you just came up with a new insulated tech 2x6 could in theory be done the same they make a version of this with dowels and foam so the radiant transfer is minimized..

Do you angle the window plate slightly to direct water out and away from the enclosure? Great content thank you!

The capillary break is ok, but maybe consider a neoprene gasket to also deal with air infiltration. Then tape the crack on both the inside and outside. Just my input.
