Basically, one of the eldritch gods that Lovecraft wrote about required an artist of Gogh's skill for a scheme, but Vincent was like "Not today, Satan" and killed himself. He of course became a Heroic Spirit so whenever he gets summoned for whatever reason,if said eldritch god notices him he would try to take control of Gogh again but Gogh got so good at killing himself whenever he felt said god taking control of him that said god basically went "Imma make my own Van Gogh then", so he took the Greek nymph Clytie (who is famous for becoming so obsessed with Apollo after being rejected by him, that she turned into sunflowers because she stared at the sun too long), used her connection to sunflowers to link her to Van Gogh due to HIS connection to sunflowers, then summoned her as a Servant with aspects of the original Van Gogh present in her. Since Clytie refuses to kill herself because she doesn't want to die before meeting Apollo again, Van Gogh's Ultra Suicide Instinct doesn't activate for her when she starts getting influenced by the eldritch god. Over the course of her event we kill the eldritch god and she falls in love with the player instead so she becomes a masochistic loli stalker with severe identity issues who also speaks in reverse tongues sometimes. Also, she is actually pretty popular, but everyone agrees that the real Van Gogh showing up at some point would have been great too. Tbh most people would have loved for us to have gotten both Clytie as she is as well as Van Gogh as he was described in the story since he sounds cool as fuck but he is solely a background character.

The reason why the Sherlock we know is forced as a ruler is because he is under the thumb of the Root), but the moriarty we summon is an archer for plot specific reasons involving his spirit origin being fused with the spirit of a German gunslinger known for having six magic bullets. Five of those bullets would hit their target exactly but the sixth bullet would be fired by the devil to kill whoever was closest to the gunslinger. Moriarty’s main weapon is actually a multipurpose coffin called reichenbach named after the waterfall where moriarty and Sherlock had their final battle that was suppose to kill both of them. It’s a missile launcher Gatling gun and makeshift flail and chain. Also the cane he is holding is an air powered rifle supposedly used by one of moriarty’s accomplices in an attempt to assassination Sherlock.
Foreigner class is a class for outer gods servants (which is lovecraft's fictional creatures) and outer space attributes servants the girl that is imitating van gogh is clytie which is a greek water nymph that get stuffed by vincent's saint graph(saint graphs are kinda like the soul of the person) because the outer gods wants vincent to be their vessel but vincent gave them a huge F-you and killed himself, but the outer gods still found another way to use him. The outer god that resides in van gogh is the evil god of flowers that's why she's holding that big sunflower. I hope this helps (also correct me if I'm wrong)
For the fans of the eldritch, Clytie Van Gogh's god is Vulthoom, a Great Old One introduced in The Sleeper of Ravermos. He is a plant-looking alien stuck on Mars. None of the eldritch gods are directly named by the way, but it's not hard to put the hints together.
4:41 to explain about the Orion situation he was original going to be summoned in his own body (for an image of that just look up “superhuman Orion) but Artemis decided to tag along hijacking his spirit origin for herself. This basically being a loophole for divine spirits since normally divine spirits cannot be summoned without diluting their divinity greatly and possessing a suitable vessel but in this case this is just Artemis in Orion’s spirit origin with Orion taking the form of the brown bear. In the future Artemis’s brother Apollo does the same thing with the servant Paris (brother of hector of Troy) but inverted. In their case Paris has a majority of control over their form while Apollo takes the form of sheep. But it’s because of Apollo that Paris takes the form of a little boy.

So, Lancer Artoria(or Altria if you're weird) isn't technically the older version of Saber Artoria. Lartoria favored the lance Rhongomyniad over Caliburn and Excalibur and was thus unaffected by the sacred swords' effects which kept Artoria from aging past the point where she drew the sword from the stone. Lancer Artoria Alter is basically the same deal, but purposefully allowed herself to be corrupted by the Grail mud in order to prevent Rhongomyniad from making her less "human".

Van Gogh is one of the most confusing Servants in the game when you read their bio. the wiki outright describes him as "80% a Greek nymph gone insane, 15% a supernatural black box of smt, and only 5% the spirit of the original namesake painter" the Servant we have in game is a mixture of the famous artist mixed with the Lovecraftian "Colour From Space", similar to how Hokusai is also mixed with Lovecraftian elements in her final ascension. this is a nudge to how Lovecraft described in his works that painters and artists are most susceptible of all people to cosmic (mental) horrors. fun stuff!
I think you should show him Noble phantasms instead of just pictures... it would look more awesome that way, and it will give ur friend a lot more clues to the idenity and the class of the servant
10:00 to explain why Thomas Edison looks like that apparently Edison wasn’t famous enough to be a complete servant. On his own he would have been a phantom spirit at best. But in order for Edison to become a complete servant the spirits of all past presidents joined together and by combining their fame with Edison made enough power to give servant Edison a body. That body being the Lion form which is apparently a mystic code (a magic tool basically) that was based off the movie Lion from metro Goldwyn Mayer.

And Edison is more recognized for taking other people’s work and remodeling them to take credit for them. And those children story’s are old and thus have more mystery on top of the fact that nursery rhyme is a collection of spirits that can take on any form fitting for her master.

Not a lot of mystery there. Heck is qualifications as a caster are shakey at best unlike his colleague Helena who has direct ties with the Magee association along with having mastery over many forms of magecraft thanks to the mohatmas. The only reason why Edison is even a caster is due to how he took others work and improved or streamlined them to be successful. If not for this even if he was able to be a servant on his own he would have been a dog shit servant similar to how William Shakespeare is treated. Tesla on the other hand is considered the “modern day Prometheus” taking electricity from the gods and bringing it to humanity. It is that drive that allows him to have the rare “pioneer of the stars” skill, a skill granted to servants known by being turning points in human history.

About Jason, his Class is part of the huge joke of a character he is in FGO: He is in the default RPG protagonist class Jason is a 1-star Servant (low rarity, low HP, low Attack etc.) with basic skills (buff, heal, stuff like that) and 80% of his animations is him commanding Heracles, Medea or Atalante to do stuff OR the three bullying him (it's a sight to behold lol). He knows he is the main character of his story and that without him there would be no Argonauts; as such, he orders people around (even you, the Master), acts cocky and runs away to ensure his survival. If you see him as a self-aware, old-time RPG protagonist, the joke makes a lot of sense. I love to hate this guy's gut lol.
A nice bit to consider is that he is a shitty person at the end of all things, he knows how and why he dies. If Fate ever summons him as a Rider he will proably be at his most powerful in lore at least.
Summer Maid Artoria is the way she is because just like the xmas version with that extreme devotion to "this one thing worth doing", she decides she needs to be a better servant (literally) to cater to her Master's needs. Hence a maid. The out-of-universe reason is a reference to a Carnival Phantasm (comedy/parody series about Typemoon characters) episode where Artoria had to work at a cafe (in a maid uniform) to help her enormous expenses at the Emiya residence (since she eats so much). She turned into her Alter form there because of Gilgamesh taking too much advantage of the situation, hilarity ensues. The pistol is Secace, a short sword King Arthur had. In this version, it's a pistol, having taken on the form most appropriate for "deadly mortal combat" (Secace's special attribute) in the current age. When it's combined with Excalibur, it becomes a sniper rifle. The out-of-universe reasons are to reference Kiritsugu's style of combat from Fate/Zero, since he was actually her first ever Master. The bike is another Zero reference, simply the alter form of the Yamaha V-Max motorbike Kiritsugu gave Artoria, which she converted into a mana-enhanced form called Cuirassier.
ok, so Lancer Artoria: funnily enough, her and Saber Artoria are actually the same age; the thing is that when she pulled Caliburn, Artoria stopped aging, and when it broke(cause she broke a rule of chivalry and tried to strike someone in a rage) she started aging again. that was kinda bad, cause Booba, so she had merlin lead her to Excalibur and more importantly Avalon, which stopped her aging again. in Lancer's timeline, she said "screw it, I trust merlin enough to keep my gender hidden" and instead went for Rhongomyniad, the Tower at the Ends of the Earth, and it's shadow became her Lance. that's normal Lancer. for Lancer Alter, it turns out that there was a goddess tied to the tower and the lance by the same name, and was slowly corrupting Artoria into that Goddess. Alter felt that happening, and rather than lose her humanity, willingly dived into the Grail mud, or something similar, but in return the goddess cursed her. also, Rhongomyniad is the spear used to kill Mordred, not her. Clarent, Mordred's sword, killed her. right on Santa and MHX, but MHXX, rather than her having come back for revenge, is just MHX as a Space Cop mad at having to work while at Hawaii. again, pretty much right on Bunny Artoria, Arthur, Maid Alter and Squirtle(summer artoria), Maid just decided to become one just to see how it felt. that's all. and Castoria is massive spoilers, so I'm not touching that. MHXA, or Mysterious Heroine X Alter, is a clone of MHX meant to hunt down and kill her(which is why I say she should really be called a Mordred than an Artoria), but instead they just became friends instead.
So....about Caster Artoria: She's actually a Fairy who looks like Saber. And is a completely different person that is from another world. A world where Excalibur doesn't exist due to the six fairies that were tasked with making it deciding to ignore that task when the world was in danger.

yeah, the distinction between Excalibur and Caliburn is often lost. It doesn't make it better that in the Fate route, Shirou projects Caliburn and they use it as if it was Excalibur

Caliburn was in fact another name for it, and both the Sword in the Stone and being in that one lake were origins for it. Eventually it was seperated into two different swords, Caliburn first in the stone then Excalibur later in the lake.

Fate servants designs are based on certain specific parts of their famous Stories/Lore/History/Accomplishments along with the "what if scenarios" & "theories". Hence, the multiple classes of Fate. (Saber, Archer, Lancer, Rider, Caster, Berserker, Assassin, Avenger, Ruler, MoonCancer, Alter-Ego, Foreigner, Beast, Pretender) Fate servants are pretty much a caricature of the original people/character that they are based on. Also the artworks of various servants in Fate Grand Order are from multiple artists who made them. Hence, the difference in the art styles of every servants.
little PSA about the foreigner class, they’re supposed to all be servants that are possessed by lovecraftian deities. So Hokusai is possessed by Cthulhu for example. I have no idea why MHXX and MHX alter’s idol form are foreigners, just sum it up to space magic or something.

Oh boy, Caster Artoria is complicated. It's true that she didn't pull out the sword. And she used magic instead of hitting people with a sword initially. Ascension 3 is a different matter. Spoiler for Lostbelt 6: Initially in the first half of the Lostbelt, it was suggested that she was actually the younger version of MORGAN LE FEY, the sister of Artoria. So that's why she used magic. She time traveled to try to avert Camelon fall. But. More Spoilers for the latter half: It finally revealed that the version that we used was actually a reincarnation of Artoria who was a fairy, like the old school murder fairy, not Tinkerbell. She was fated to destroy Camelot who was saved by Morgan but cut off from the rest of the world, hence the Lostbelt. Then she became her Ascension 3 in the end and it was epic.
If it's not actually the last, consider adding more dud names to the list (maybe up to 33% of them should be incorrect to make it more interesting). Also you can add characters that aren't currently in F/GO or characters that aren't from Fate at all as another form of trick question.
Van Gogh is actually a fucked up case. You got Van Gogh the painter that despise god, and Clytie from Greek myth that wanted to be loved by the god. And then the Outer God (lovecraftian one), decided to mix and merge the spirit origin of those two, but more than just a forced fusion. 80% of the components is Clytie, the insane nymph, while only 5% of its Spirit Origin is occupied by the memory and talent of the painter Van Gogh. And the rest is the outer god themselves, Vulthoom. So Clytie Van Gogh is an insane girl, with suffering of a talented painter, being occasionally loses her mind over the evil god.
Enkidu isn't a guy built like a woman, they're completely genderless. Made out of clay and the gods didn't bother to add any gender-specific things on. They're built like a ken doll down under.

I don't remember everything about the X Altrias but: X and X Alter are from Servant Universe AKA Space Universe. It is mainly a Star Wars parody as of FGO and runs on TV Show seasons as well, including ratings. X Alter was supposed to kill X, but the two bonded as roommates when they didn't know who the other was. X Alter was eventually thought to be killed in the final conflict prior to Saber Wars II. X would eventually join Space Police, get her new lance and armor and become XX. She is a Foreigner Hunter now (who still hunts Sabers on the side sometimes) and her Outer God is Capitalism (may or may not be serious.) X Alter meanwhile IS supposed to be dead and showed up in the afterlife, kicking out X and the MC if they make when/if they end up there...but she also showed up alive again in a new event becoming Idol X Alter, also a Foreigner this time because of the contradiction of her having been killed but not died. May have gotten some things wrong but overall should be correct. Caster Altria is a whole nother thing covered in Lost Belt 6, very good can't wait for it to be in EN.

Ok. To correct this assumption about Artorias. There're 3 Artorias, who are classic Artoria (+ her alter/evil version), mature Artoria (+ her evil version as well, lol) and Castoria, who just shares the name and looks. So, let's ignore the can of worms, which comes with Castoria, and look at the other 2. The difference between 2 main Artorias comes from their weapon of choice. Classic version uses Excalibur. And part of its enchantment makes her "eternal" (meaning unaging). That's why she looks like a teen (lore-wise, she'd picked it up somewhen around 15-16, I think). Mature Artoria is not older than her counterpart, if you'd compare their age (time of living, not the visual bodily age). She simply aged and her body grown and matured, because she'd cast Excalibur (and it's "unaging" enchantment with it) away. That's it. She isn't "older and wiser", nope. She simply had different experience, due to her being unable to pretend being a guy.
techincly mature alteria is older but not that much mature alteria comes from a alternate universe where benvere refused to give excalibur back to the lady of the lake not allowing arthur to die from her battle wounds received from her battle against mordred. But since benevere never actualy returned excalibur to atrorria either the power that kept her from ageing weakend and she needed a new weapon and she defaulted back to her second main weapon rhongomyniad a devine holy lance. Major spoilers for JP content, but in short, 'Caster Artoria' isn't even an Artoria. And I do mean major spoilers. Ready? She's one of the Fae, and a reincarnation of _Morgan,_ from a world where Excalibur was never forged, Britain as we know it was destroyed, and humanity, and thus Artoria never existed.
Artoria caster (Castoria) is pretty much prototype Artoria, where in this world she is Merlin instead. This is when she was still a country bumkin, and she never pulled out Excaliber. Also Arthur Pendragon is the actual king in this world, this is where he came from I think.
No. Proto Merlin is different which you can see in FGO Arcade. Castoria is Artoria if she never pulled the sword and instead trained under Merlin as a mage instead of using a sword. And then there’s the losbelt 6 lore which I won’t even get into cuz it’s just way too much time to explain
At this point the character designs for servants are so all over the place that there is really no point in this exercise. They very rarely look anything like what you would envision the legend to look like, so a lot of the time there are no intuitive hints to base your guess off.
I'd have to disagree, like if you onew Tristan's legend then you'd very well would recognize the scar on his chest or the fact Atalanta has cat ears and a tail that references her being raised by wild animals (as well as being a reference to her being turned into a lioness), Marie and her big hat, Merlin is honestly about what I would expect from an eccentric and intrinsic half demon wizard, Morgan straight looks like what a regal witch would look like, and honestly I guessed Tamamo-no-Mae was Tamamo-no-Mae before I even knew who she was

They are also going to be distracted by the eyesore that is his weapon, are going to start thinking "Okay, who in legend used something like that?" And will then draw a blank because the answer to that question is no one. Atalanta: Cat ears are a universal in anime and the Atalanta of the story didnt have them. Also having cat ears does not in any way indicate that you were raised by wild beasts. This is an anti hint if anything as someone who knows the myth of Atalanta will not asociate her with them. Marie Antoinette: I actually like her design, I think it fits her character well and the hat is charming. But a good hint it is not. It doesnt resemble her IRL hat at all and even if it did there was an entire era of human history where nobles wore gigantic hats, meaning she could be any one of them. Its a needle in a haystack hint if anything. Merlin: Merlin looks okay, he doesnt look particularly Arthurian but I dont actualy mind since in his legend Merlin is not suposed to stand out and he changes his apperance frequently. There is nothing to identify him as Merlin, but a good Merlin would always be like that so I give him a pass. Morgan: Morgan looks completely generic, her outfit screams lazy gatcha game waifu. Compare her to any other anime girl in a dress from a dozen diffrent mobile games and you will need to squint to see a difference. Her crown and her veil are her only redeeming design features, but they are also not helpfull in determining who she is. Her staff is the worst as it makes the veiwer think of Christianity which Morgan has no association with. Edit: forgot about Tamamo. Tamamo looks good, I agree shes an easy one. Shes also notably an older design from before FGO started pumping out Servants quickly and en mass. This should tell you something.

You are reaching with the Morgan one, maybe it's because if Morgan is basic than every character in the game is basic would actually crumble your original point of character designs being too wild and unrecognizeable to their legends, I was able to recognize Tristan from the scar, it's how I know who it is not to mention I happen to like hid harp's design, and I was able to tell who Tamamo was and I didn't even know what Fate was when I did so

Over the course of her event we kill the eldritch god and she falls in love with the player instead so she becomes a masochistic loli stalker with severe identity issues who also speaks in reverse tongues sometimes.
Also, she is actually pretty popular, but everyone agrees that the real Van Gogh showing up at some point would have been great too. Tbh most people would have loved for us to have gotten both Clytie as she is as well as Van Gogh as he was described in the story since he sounds cool as fuck but he is solely a background character.
They probably also didn't want to desecrate Van Gogh too much, in japan Van Gogh in a sense the most popular painter there so yeah....

It’s a missile launcher Gatling gun and makeshift flail and chain. Also the cane he is holding is an air powered rifle supposedly used by one of moriarty’s accomplices in an attempt to assassination Sherlock.

4:41 to explain about the Orion situation he was original going to be summoned in his own body (for an image of that just look up “superhuman Orion) but Artemis decided to tag along hijacking his spirit origin for herself.
This basically being a loophole for divine spirits since normally divine spirits cannot be summoned without diluting their divinity greatly and possessing a suitable vessel but in this case this is just Artemis in Orion’s spirit origin with Orion taking the form of the brown bear.
In the future Artemis’s brother Apollo does the same thing with the servant Paris (brother of hector of Troy) but inverted. In their case Paris has a majority of control over their form while Apollo takes the form of sheep. But it’s because of Apollo that Paris takes the form of a little boy.

So, Lancer Artoria(or Altria if you're weird) isn't technically the older version of Saber Artoria. Lartoria favored the lance Rhongomyniad over Caliburn and Excalibur and was thus unaffected by the sacred swords' effects which kept Artoria from aging past the point where she drew the sword from the stone. Lancer Artoria Alter is basically the same deal, but purposefully allowed herself to be corrupted by the Grail mud in order to prevent Rhongomyniad from making her less "human".

the Servant we have in game is a mixture of the famous artist mixed with the Lovecraftian "Colour From Space", similar to how Hokusai is also mixed with Lovecraftian elements in her final ascension. this is a nudge to how Lovecraft described in his works that painters and artists are most susceptible of all people to cosmic (mental) horrors. fun stuff!

10:00 to explain why Thomas Edison looks like that apparently Edison wasn’t famous enough to be a complete servant. On his own he would have been a phantom spirit at best. But in order for Edison to become a complete servant the spirits of all past presidents joined together and by combining their fame with Edison made enough power to give servant Edison a body. That body being the Lion form which is apparently a mystic code (a magic tool basically) that was based off the movie Lion from metro Goldwyn Mayer.

Jason is a 1-star Servant (low rarity, low HP, low Attack etc.) with basic skills (buff, heal, stuff like that) and 80% of his animations is him commanding Heracles, Medea or Atalante to do stuff OR the three bullying him (it's a sight to behold lol). He knows he is the main character of his story and that without him there would be no Argonauts; as such, he orders people around (even you, the Master), acts cocky and runs away to ensure his survival.
If you see him as a self-aware, old-time RPG protagonist, the joke makes a lot of sense. I love to hate this guy's gut lol.

Summer Maid Artoria is the way she is because just like the xmas version with that extreme devotion to "this one thing worth doing", she decides she needs to be a better servant (literally) to cater to her Master's needs. Hence a maid. The out-of-universe reason is a reference to a Carnival Phantasm (comedy/parody series about Typemoon characters) episode where Artoria had to work at a cafe (in a maid uniform) to help her enormous expenses at the Emiya residence (since she eats so much). She turned into her Alter form there because of Gilgamesh taking too much advantage of the situation, hilarity ensues.
The pistol is Secace, a short sword King Arthur had. In this version, it's a pistol, having taken on the form most appropriate for "deadly mortal combat" (Secace's special attribute) in the current age. When it's combined with Excalibur, it becomes a sniper rifle. The out-of-universe reasons are to reference Kiritsugu's style of combat from Fate/Zero, since he was actually her first ever Master. The bike is another Zero reference, simply the alter form of the Yamaha V-Max motorbike Kiritsugu gave Artoria, which she converted into a mana-enhanced form called Cuirassier.

ok, so Lancer Artoria: funnily enough, her and Saber Artoria are actually the same age; the thing is that when she pulled Caliburn, Artoria stopped aging, and when it broke(cause she broke a rule of chivalry and tried to strike someone in a rage) she started aging again. that was kinda bad, cause Booba, so she had merlin lead her to Excalibur and more importantly Avalon, which stopped her aging again. in Lancer's timeline, she said "screw it, I trust merlin enough to keep my gender hidden" and instead went for Rhongomyniad, the Tower at the Ends of the Earth, and it's shadow became her Lance. that's normal Lancer.
for Lancer Alter, it turns out that there was a goddess tied to the tower and the lance by the same name, and was slowly corrupting Artoria into that Goddess. Alter felt that happening, and rather than lose her humanity, willingly dived into the Grail mud, or something similar, but in return the goddess cursed her. also, Rhongomyniad is the spear used to kill Mordred, not her. Clarent, Mordred's sword, killed her.

She's actually a Fairy who looks like Saber. And is a completely different person that is from another world. A world where Excalibur doesn't exist due to the six fairies that were tasked with making it deciding to ignore that task when the world was in danger.

Caliburn was in fact another name for it, and both the Sword in the Stone and being in that one lake were origins for it. Eventually it was seperated into two different swords, Caliburn first in the stone then Excalibur later in the lake.

Fate servants designs are based on certain specific parts of their famous Stories/Lore/History/Accomplishments along with the "what if scenarios" & "theories".
Hence, the multiple classes of Fate. (Saber, Archer, Lancer, Rider, Caster, Berserker, Assassin, Avenger, Ruler, MoonCancer, Alter-Ego, Foreigner, Beast, Pretender)
Fate servants are pretty much a caricature of the original people/character that they are based on.
Also the artworks of various servants in Fate Grand Order are from multiple artists who made them.
Hence, the difference in the art styles of every servants.

Initially in the first half of the Lostbelt, it was suggested that she was actually the younger version of MORGAN LE FEY, the sister of Artoria. So that's why she used magic. She time traveled to try to avert Camelon fall. But.

It finally revealed that the version that we used was actually a reincarnation of Artoria who was a fairy, like the old school murder fairy, not Tinkerbell. She was fated to destroy Camelot who was saved by Morgan but cut off from the rest of the world, hence the Lostbelt. Then she became her Ascension 3 in the end and it was epic.

You got Van Gogh the painter that despise god, and Clytie from Greek myth that wanted to be loved by the god. And then the Outer God (lovecraftian one), decided to mix and merge the spirit origin of those two, but more than just a forced fusion.
80% of the components is Clytie, the insane nymph, while only 5% of its Spirit Origin is occupied by the memory and talent of the painter Van Gogh. And the rest is the outer god themselves, Vulthoom. So Clytie Van Gogh is an insane girl, with suffering of a talented painter, being occasionally loses her mind over the evil god.

X and X Alter are from Servant Universe AKA Space Universe. It is mainly a Star Wars parody as of FGO and runs on TV Show seasons as well, including ratings.
X Alter was supposed to kill X, but the two bonded as roommates when they didn't know who the other was. X Alter was eventually thought to be killed in the final conflict prior to Saber Wars II.
X would eventually join Space Police, get her new lance and armor and become XX. She is a Foreigner Hunter now (who still hunts Sabers on the side sometimes) and her Outer God is Capitalism (may or may not be serious.)
X Alter meanwhile IS supposed to be dead and showed up in the afterlife, kicking out X and the MC if they make when/if they end up there...but she also showed up alive again in a new event becoming Idol X Alter, also a Foreigner this time because of the contradiction of her having been killed but not died.

Ok. To correct this assumption about Artorias. There're 3 Artorias, who are classic Artoria (+ her alter/evil version), mature Artoria (+ her evil version as well, lol) and Castoria, who just shares the name and looks. So, let's ignore the can of worms, which comes with Castoria, and look at the other 2.
The difference between 2 main Artorias comes from their weapon of choice. Classic version uses Excalibur. And part of its enchantment makes her "eternal" (meaning unaging). That's why she looks like a teen (lore-wise, she'd picked it up somewhen around 15-16, I think).
Mature Artoria is not older than her counterpart, if you'd compare their age (time of living, not the visual bodily age). She simply aged and her body grown and matured, because she'd cast Excalibur (and it's "unaging" enchantment with it) away. That's it. She isn't "older and wiser", nope. She simply had different experience, due to her being unable to pretend being a guy.
techincly mature alteria is older but not that much mature alteria comes from a alternate universe where benvere refused to give excalibur back to the lady of the lake not allowing arthur to die from her battle wounds received from her battle against mordred. But since benevere never actualy returned excalibur to atrorria either the power that kept her from ageing weakend and she needed a new weapon and she defaulted back to her second main weapon rhongomyniad a devine holy lance. At this point the character designs for servants are so all over the place that there is really no point in this exercise. They very rarely look anything like what you would envision the legend to look like, so a lot of the time there are no intuitive hints to base your guess off.
I'd have to disagree, like if you onew Tristan's legend then you'd very well would recognize the scar on his chest or the fact Atalanta has cat ears and a tail that references her being raised by wild animals (as well as being a reference to her being turned into a lioness), Marie and her big hat, Merlin is honestly about what I would expect from an eccentric and intrinsic half demon wizard, Morgan straight looks like what a regal witch would look like, and honestly I guessed Tamamo-no-Mae was Tamamo-no-Mae before I even knew who she was
@@aceoffires1032 Tristan: Ill grant you this one, but the hint is so vauge that its barley helpful. I doubt most people who knew who Tristan was would pick up on it. They are also going to be distracted by the eyesore that is his weapon, are going to start thinking "Okay, who in legend used something like that?" And will then draw a blank because the answer to that question is no one.
Atalanta: Cat ears are a universal in anime and the Atalanta of the story didnt have them. Also having cat ears does not in any way indicate that you were raised by wild beasts. This is an anti hint if anything as someone who knows the myth of Atalanta will not asociate her with them.
Marie Antoinette: I actually like her design, I think it fits her character well and the hat is charming. But a good hint it is not. It doesnt resemble her IRL hat at all and even if it did there was an entire era of human history where nobles wore gigantic hats, meaning she could be any one of them. Its a needle in a haystack hint if anything.
Merlin: Merlin looks okay, he doesnt look particularly Arthurian but I dont actualy mind since in his legend Merlin is not suposed to stand out and he changes his apperance frequently.
There is nothing to identify him as Merlin, but a good Merlin would always be like that so I give him a pass.
Morgan: Morgan looks completely generic, her outfit screams lazy gatcha game waifu. Compare her to any other anime girl in a dress from a dozen diffrent mobile games and you will need to squint to see a difference. Her crown and her veil are her only redeeming design features, but they are also not helpfull in determining who she is. Her staff is the worst as it makes the veiwer think of Christianity which Morgan has no association with.
Edit: forgot about Tamamo. Tamamo looks good, I agree shes an easy one. Shes also notably an older design from before FGO started pumping out Servants quickly and en mass. This should tell you something.

You are reaching with the Morgan one, maybe it's because if Morgan is basic than every character in the game is basic would actually crumble your original point of character designs being too wild and unrecognizeable to their legends, I was able to recognize Tristan from the scar, it's how I know who it is not to mention I happen to like hid harp's design, and I was able to tell who Tamamo was and I didn't even know what Fate was when I did so
