      Just to let you know that the box you get from your ISP is both a router and a modem. Every network needs to have both. There is a difference between both.

      "it includes internet inside the modem"... oh boy, that's a really helpful comment. Ummm... don't you mean it's a combo modem/router? Routers and modems have two different functions, being a wifi hub and/or ethernet hub is what routers do, they can be stand alone or integrated with a modem, which acts as your gateway to the internet. Most savy tech users keep separate modems and routers, due to most combo router/modems always make sacrifices somewhere, and/or make it cheaper when you just need to replace one or the other, instead of both.

  • @RobertBrianGabriel
    @RobertBrianGabriel 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    it is a good list in terms for normal consumers. Certainly not high end modems or combo modems-routers.

    • @Zorabotic
      @Zorabotic 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know you said or but I just want to clarify that combo modem-routers are the exact opposite of high end. no one should ever get a combo. they're really poorly made and thus unreliable and tend to have a shorter life span, along with a multitude of performance issues and technical limitations

      Modems have nothing to do with the size of your space and everything to do with how fast your internet plan is. The router is where you should consider- How large of a space it needs to cover, how many devices it needs to support, how fast your internet plan is, and what your devices will be using the internet for

    • @johnboyjr21

      @@keeganjamescatlin8594 You can buy any a modem that's approved by your provider (and I recommend everybody does so!) and any router is compatible with any modem. Modems only retrieve data, they don't do anything other than that, so all you have to worry about as far as modems go is- 1. It is compatible with your provider. 2. It is fast enough for your internet plan, and 3. It doesn't use an Intel Puma Chip. I recommend buying a CM600 for data plans 300mbps and lower. A CM1000 is my choice for plans in the 300mbps - 1000mbps(1gbps) range. For me, a CM700 would be great for my 400mbps plan HOWEVER, it uses an Intel chip so I had to go with a CM1000. If anyone has any specific questions, feel free to ask. This stuff is very frustrating for most people, but I've taken the time and headache to figure it out :/ XD

      @@johnboyjr21 so I need a cable modem and router for wifi? I'm going to stop renting from xfinity, so I have to buy my own router and cable modem? I thought a cable modem was for television...

    • @johnboyjr21
      @johnboyjr21 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NocturnalSeabass Yes you will need a router and a cable modem to have wifi. The modem you rent from xfinity is a router and modem in one unit and they're dirt cheap (for them not for you). The reason it's called a "cable" modem isn't because it's for the tv, it's because it connects to the internet via a coaxial cable as opposed to through a phone line/satellite like the old days or the new super fast fiber wire that are currently available in very few areas. Invest $100-$400 (depending on your plan, living space and how many/what kind of devices you are connecting to) in a good modem and router and not only will they pay for themselves within a few years (by avoiding the rental charges) but you will also get the most out of the service/speeds you're already paying for!! I for instance, tripled my speeds and am now able to get stable wifi connection throughout my entire house for a $300 investment (I ended up saving far more than that by now) I made 5 years ago!!! If you're willing to spring for that price range, I recommend a TP-Link AC4000 Router and a Surfboard SB8200 Modem. If your speed plan is lower than 400mbps you can certainly go for cheaper. Hope this helps

    These are really bad choices. Most aren’t even docsis 3.1 and are terribly low spec. And you’re saying that people should buy one because that’s what’s making their internet slow? That’s just blatantly false to get your commission.

      Michael Casaus bought the Motorola MB8600 three months ago and haven’t had a single issue, supports docsis 3.1, all the upstream and downstream bands you’d want, simple interface. Make sure you have a router too because this is a modem only.

      @@Ogwrad
      DOCSIS 1.0 : Released in March 1997, DOCSIS 1.0 included functional elements from preceding proprietary cable modems.[4]
      DOCSIS 1.1 : Released in April 1999, DOCSIS 1.1 standardized quality of service (QoS) mechanisms that were outlined in DOCSIS 1.0.[5]
      DOCSIS 2.0 : Released in December 2001, DOCSIS 2.0 enhanced upstream data rates in response to increased demand for symmetric services such as IP telephony.
      DOCSIS 3.0 : Released in August 2006, DOCSIS 3.0 significantly increased data rates (this time both upstream and downstream) and introduced support for Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6).
      DOCSIS 3.1 : First released in October 2013, and updated several times since, the DOCSIS 3.1 suite of specifications support capacities of up to 10 Gbit/s downstream and 1 Gbit/s upstream using 4096 QAM. The new specs do away with 6 MHz and 8 MHz wide channel spacing and instead use narrower (25 kHz or 50 kHz wide) orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) subcarriers; these can be bonded inside a block spectrum that could end up being about 200 MHz wide.[6] DOCSIS 3.1 technology also includes some new energy management features that will help the cable industry reduce its energy usage, and the DOCSIS-PIE[7] algorithm to reduce bufferbloat.[8] In the United States, broadband provider Comcast announced in February 2016 that several cities within its footprint will have DOCSIS 3.1 availability before the end of the year.[9] At the end of 2016, Mediacom announced it would become the first major U.S. cable company to fully transition to the DOCSIS 3.1 platform.[10]
      DOCSIS 4.0 : Improves DOCSIS 3.1 to use the full spectrum of the cable plant (0 MHz to ~1.8 GHz) at the same time in both upstream and downstream directions. This technology enables multi-gigabit symmetrical services while remaining backwards compatible with DOCSIS 3.1. CableLabs released the full specification in October 2017.[11] Previously branded as DOCSIS 3.1 Full Duplex, these technologies have been rebranded as part of DOCSIS 4.0.[12]
      Cross-version compatibility has been maintained across all versions of DOCSIS, with the devices falling back to the highest supported version in common between both endpoints: cable modem (CM) and cable modem termination system (CMTS). For example, if one has a cable modem that only supports DOCSIS 1.0, and the system is running 2.0, the connection will be established at DOCSIS 1.0 data rates

    • @KaeganThornhillTheCyberRaven
      @KaeganThornhillTheCyberRaven 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In short Docsis 4.0 is aimed for huge businesses and billion dollar companies while Docsis 3.1 is for small business/home owners.

    I know this is a year old list, but even a year ago, this was a terrible list of recommendations and I hope you didn't make a similar list this year, because you really prioritize all of the worst things... anyone serious about router performance never chooses a combo modem/router model... wifi 6 was out when this list was made, all of the combo routers featured here have terrible range (lacking antennas), just too many sacrifices to combine modems and routers into a single package... most of the combo router/modems on this list are the exact same kind of schlock the ISPs rent out to customers, because they're oversimplified and mediocre across the board, excelling at no one thing. Please stop making recommendation lists if these are what you consider the best (even a year ago, none of these were the best available). This video should be renamed "Average 5 modems ISPs will rent out to you".
