My Grandmother was exactly the same, a holocaust survivor, and instilled all of the same beliefs in me about the power of music to overcome. One thing she would always tell me(in her thick accent) was to, "never hate anyone because you never know how good they really are, and they might just be misled." She said she went to her work station everyday, opened her drawer and there would be one piece of fresh bread, meat, and maybe cheese(small enough to hide though.) She would throw it in her mouth as quickly as possible, barely chewing to not be noticed. One lady was publicly hung by her feet over the water and lowered slowly for simply having thread from her own station to fix a piece of wearing clothing. She knew it was a Nazi guard or soldier with the drawer/station keys helping her with the food but she never, ever found out who or told a soul. That would have been of dire consequences to them both. She lived in both the light and unfortunately the extreme darkness the rest of her life so I have much respect for this woman's ability to stay in the light and be so positive. I'm also empathetic, and it's very important that we never forget what has been done to people. [Edit 2021-01-15]: I didn't mention that I'm Bosnian and that my people went through our own genocide in the 1990's. Even though it wasn't as big and as industrially organized, the main goal was our extermination, by either murder or expulsion, and that was well planned and organized, but they weren't able to finish the job, because we were able to fight back with the little resources and materials we had. I've lost several family members and friends in the war, and I was an 11 year old child when the war began.
I am 23 years old but one day, if I could have a woman half as optimistic as Alice Herz-Sommer, I will always think she's beautiful no matter how old we get.

This story breaks my heart but gives me a different perspective on the whole topic. Look at how happy she is after going through all of that. Also, I had no idea people were saved because of their musical talents.
Because their musical talents served the Nazi purpose of staging an idilyc life in Terezinstadt. Other performers that had the terrible luck of staying in Germany, ghettos in Krakow, Warsaw, etc. weren't needed so they suffered a different fate.
This brought me to tears now. I'm watching this during the COVID19 lockdown, from Sao Paulo, Brazil. I'm a guitarrist and singer and music has always been my life. Right now, times are so very difficult with sickness, uncertainty, hopelessness, boredom. But we all have music. Just this week, I talked to an dear elderly lady who is also a pianist and one of the best teacher I've ever had. When I asked how she was doing, if she was ok and healthy, she just replied: "we have music". Everyday I pick up my guitar and on most days I do a sort of meditation while improvising freely. And just like they said, it takes me places, it soothes my soul and I touch a happy eternity in those moments, in a world much nicer than the one we're living in. Thanks for sharing that. For some reason, this was on my long watch later list for several years. God knows I had to watch this right now. Thanks for that.
