Wow. I might not be quaified for mayo med but I am definitely applying. I had a family member receive treatment from there and I want to be apart of mayo. great video :D
I definitely didn’t think I was qualified! You never know with the med school application so I’m glad to hear you’re applying! And I’m also glad to hear that your family member received good treatment here! 🙏🏽
Hey JR! Wanted to ask about that morning anki - you mentioned you prioritized hematology as its your block, but if the AnKing card count is everything you’ve done, how are you configuring it to show you the heme stuff first? I thought the only part we could control was either randomize all cards, or show new cards for the day after all review? Just a bit confused about Anki as I try to navigate it haha but i figure you’re only getting new cards AFTER you preview the lec last night…? Thanks!
Wouldve loved to see more of the ortho clip and them talking abt the why ortho slide! Idk if u can film some parts of your lectures so I understand if u cant. Does your school have groups like that for most specialties? Also, does mayo clinic start clinic early? I thought clinic was mainly 3rd and 4th yr
We do have groups like this for almost all specialties and we also begin seeing patients pretty early. We still begin our formal clerkship rotations during third year like almost all school, but we begin rotating through inpatient, outpatient, pediatrics and our clinic for underinsured patients at the end of our first year and throughout our second year.
Bro what are those headphones you use to study at home? Need something like that. Great vids! Much love from a pre-Med taking MCAT this April! Wish me luck.
Do you make most of your Anki cards from PowerPoint lectures from your classes? I would love a how-to on how you make your cards if there isn't a video already! Also, is this the only thing you do to memorize?
Great question! I actually don’t make many cards from lecture (though that works for some of my classmates). I really rely on the Anking deck and it corresponds very well to my class content. And Anki is really the only thing I do to study lol. I learn the material, then review it using Anki, and then every now and then do practice questions. Here’s a video on how I use Anki though. I hope it helps! th-cam.com/video/xLIKnumRXD0/w-d-xo.html
@@EvolvingMedic I'm so envious of your school. At our med school, you wouldn't even pass if all you did / mainly did was Anking. Our exams are stupidly in depth on PhD level stuff that isn't boards relevant :( I'm at 750 daily average of cards, and I don't even keep up with old blocks because there's not enough time.
I'm sorry to hear that. I'm sure it is frustrating for faculty to not teach board relevant material but I hope that the depth of knowledge you gain pays off in the long run!
That’s a great question Jamie! When we have to work in the clinic we dress up in formal attire. But students who just have class don’t have to dress up. So it just depends on every one’s personal schedule. Also… Go Duke! 😉 hahah
@@EvolvingMedic that’s hilarious I use the same camera and lens 😂😂😂 maybe I just need to dust my lens off or better my lighting! Thank you though! Enjoyed your video
Hey man, I was wondering, do you make the ankis that you use? If so how do you find the time to make them? If not, then how do you find them? Your videos are extremely helpful and still give me hope!
Hey! I actually don’t make many Anki cards. I almost exclusively use the Anking deck. Here’s a video walking through exactly how I use Anki: th-cam.com/video/xLIKnumRXD0/w-d-xo.html I hope it helps!
Hey! I've got a lot of detailed questions about ANKI that I've always wondered of medical student anki users. When you say "700 anki cards," are those each individual cards, or some you may see multiple times that you need to review again, such as when you click "10 mins" etc. Are some of those cards new cards that take a longer time to know? When you answer the card, are you going through the answer word for word, or do you sometimes visualize the card instead of taking the time to go through the whole answer? If that makes sense. Sometimes I will just visualize in my head what I have on the card, instead of consciously saying the words in my head. I LOVE anki, but I don't know how I'd be able to get through 700 cards in 2 hours, and am wondering what methods you are using to get through them so fast. Thanks!
All great questions! So I had around 700 reviews but ended at a little over 800 from having to do cards again and adding new cards. The cards I do again or the new cards take much longer, but my reviews I try to fly through based on pattern recognition. Since I take time to fully understand a card when it’s new, I pretty much try and zoom through them when after that (unless I miss it, then it’s back to fully learning the card again). A lot of medicine is pattern recognition: A patient with X symptoms over a time frame of Y with a past medical history of Z = diagnosis. There are times when going back and thinking through the details of a certain disease or the mechanism of action for a certain drug may be helpful, but it really all starts with pattern recognition. Sorry for the super long response but I hope that makes sense! Let me know if you have any other questions!
@@EvolvingMedic That totally make sense! I’m currently doing a post bacc to eventually go to med school and am trying to build the habit of anki so that it comes much easier once I’m in med school. Thank you for the response!
I’ve learned that patients are only nervous if the physician or medical student is visibly nervous lol. As long as you are confident (but not arrogant), most patients are very willing to allow you to learn through managing their cases. And you’ll always have supervision as a medical student. I’m honored that you have found inspiration in me! I’m sure you’re going to accomplish great things!
@@EvolvingMedic wow i’m surprise. I am 2 second year med student too but i am 19 years old. Did you do any work before or it’s study program? I just wondered, sorry my English is not good.

@@EvolvingMedic yep! Never know so might as well try😁
Great vid! Curious on the make and model of the wireless headphones you use? Currently shopping for a pair.
Thank you! And these are the Sony wireless noise canceling headphones: Model WH-H910N. I love them! Sony has some great options
Thank you! And I have the Sony WH-1000xm3. I’ll be dropping an MCAT video soon so be on the lookout for that! Good luck with your studies! 🙏🏽
@@EvolvingMedic awesome I will be grinding in the mean time! Keep killing this books 📚
@@MeaslesHumpNdumP Thank you!

Go cats! 😵💫, also curious why some students are in formal attire and some are more casual on campus?
That’s a great question Jamie! When we have to work in the clinic we dress up in formal attire. But students who just have class don’t have to dress up. So it just depends on every one’s personal schedule.
Also… Go Duke! 😉 hahah
Hey man, love the videos! Do you make your own anki cards? Or do you find some already pre made?
Hey! I’m glad you’re loving the videos! I primarily use premade cards (just the Anking deck really lol)
@@EvolvingMedic sweet! I’m really new to them so I’m trying to figure it all out!
“I have 700 Anki cards in 2 hours” what a mood.
I’m in 9th grade and I want to become a physiatrist so this was cool to see
That’s awesome! I’m glad you enjoyed the video!
Hi, thanks for the video. I noticed a lot of stairs. Is your campus wheelchair accessible?
Yes Mayo is wheel chair accessible!
This is amazing 👌💕
Thank you so much! 🙏🏽
I really need to learn to wake up at 5 am at least 5 days a week
It’s really a game changer!
What kind of glasses are those? They look really good
Thank you! These were just blue light glasses that I got off Amazon lol

Thanks so much and congrats on getting into med school! I use the Sony a6400
What camera and lens is this? I only ask because your video looks amazing!
Thank you so much!! I use the Sony a6400 and the Sigma 16mm f/1.4.
@@EvolvingMedic that’s hilarious I use the same camera and lens 😂😂😂 maybe I just need to dust my lens off or better my lighting! Thank you though! Enjoyed your video

Can you please explain what Anki is exactly?? I love this content..
I’m glad you’re enjoying it! Here is a video where I go over Anki in more detail:

Hey man, I was wondering, do you make the ankis that you use? If so how do you find the time to make them? If not, then how do you find them? Your videos are extremely helpful and still give me hope!
Hey! I actually don’t make many Anki cards. I almost exclusively use the Anking deck.
Here’s a video walking through exactly how I use Anki: th-cam.com/video/xLIKnumRXD0/w-d-xo.html
I hope it helps!
That’s a great idea! I wish I works have had that forethought 😅. You’re going to be really ahead of the game!
Are patients not nervous when you give them injections considering you're still a student? You're doing so good! I strive to be like you one day.
Nice video, though I'll admit I had to google what Anki cards were! Doh! :)
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed it! And Anki is a very med school-specific thing lol
Where did you get your suit? It’s so fresh.
Thank you!! I honestly don’t know lol. I think this was a gift a few years ago
