His 4-yr-old son died in a tragic accident in March, 1991. He wrote the song, in part as self-therapy, to help deal with his grief. The performance you just listened to was recorded live in January, 1992, & released a couple months later, to a worldwide audience who were familiar with the story. One of his very best because it is so heartfelt and real.
@@ArmandoMartinez-zz5xt the line is about Claptons own guilt at being a reluctant father while his son was alive and not getting the chance to make it up to him.
I saw him again live in Sept. and he sang that song and I cried so I too don’t know how he could sing it either and not break down. Maybe for him it is a healing song and not a sad song.
Eric carried on because he knew that his son would want him to. The lost of a child is never easy it is the hardest thing I have ever dealt with but you get up and carry on one breath at a time
Even now, after all this time, this makes me tear up. As has been said, he wrote this after his 4 year old son fell to his death. Clapton has said he was on his way to pick up his son (Conor) for lunch and just some father-son time together, but before he arrived Conor's mother called him to tell him what happened. Just heartbreaking.
Written grieving his son Conor. Clapton won a serious amount of Grammys and the song was used for the movie Rush, pretty good movie.👍🏽 I don't know how he sang this that night...I sat there and cried like I am now. 🥺 Great one you two. ❤👍🏽
Even if you never knew the backstory to this song, you can’t help but feel it remind you of someone you’ve lost. We’ve all experienced that feeling. EC captured that emotion in one of the best remembrance songs ever written, IMO.
You are not kidding there. I haven't heard this in a hot minute but I'm bawling listening to it. I lost my Mom in April and this will be the first XMAS without her. Beautiful lyrics and guitar work.
@@melaniejordan1199 Soooooo sorry to hear Melanie. Know that she will be with you this Christmas. She will make her presence known to you. Let’s listen to some happy music now! 😊
This is a beautiful song, beautiful and sad and amazing. It is a song about how he lost his son in an accident, when his son fell out a window from the 53rd floor of an apartment of a friend of the moms. FYI this song has brought a lot of healing to a lot of people and that includes me, so thank you Eric Clapton for this song, & thank you for reacting to this song Asia and BJ.
Man this is hitting hard. Lost a family member last week and now it’s been 45 years ago last week we lost 4 family members in the same day. This is why I hate the holidays. I just put on a happy face for my kids so they can enjoy
My son TJ passed away Two Years ago Today December 26th 2019 Forever29 this song holds a whole new meeting too my husband and I now . The pain that is left in your heart is indescribable we have cried all day . I came on TH-cam to listen to music opened it up and seen you guys have done this 3 days ago . I had to drop by and listen and see how the song touched your hearts .
His son Conor was 5 yrs old when he died. A maintenance guy was working on a window in his mothers high rise apartment in the midtown section of NYC. The window was left open and Connor was running around and he ran up to the window and fell out I believe it was from the 53rd floor to another roof down below and he died. I remember the breaking news on TV announcement like it was yesterday. It happened back in early or mid 80’s. I just saw Eric live back in September and he sang this song I don’t understand how he could even sing this. Maybe it helps him🤷♀️ I cried when he started singing it.
I remember the day Conor fell from that window every time I hear this song - as a New Yorker, it was all over the news for days - heartbreaking tragedy.
Eric was writing a song for a movie, before he delivered it his family experienced the tragedy others have mentioned, thus he changed and modified the song to be about his son’s death.
Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin wrote and sang two tribute songs for his son Karac titled " I Believe" and "All My Love" who died from a stomach virus while on tour july 26, 1977. Maybe someone will request both at some point. Peace and love from Wisconsin...
From tragic circumstances often comes the soul and song writing of an artist. Losing his small son falling out of window in such a tragic and sudden moment left his father with the pain, the live and the emotion to pen such a song as part of the healing process but in tribute from loving father to son. Along the way, many families and their own experiences in losing lived ones has resonated and remains timeless.
One of my favorites amazing how someone in deep dark place can see a light to write something so calming but if you believe that’s how it is no understanding no questions just faith
Yeah a majority of the fam covered the story behind this song. I have to thank you guys for reacting to this sing because when ive listened to this song before, i was so filled up with emotions that id stop it half way thru, and for the first time i listened thru this whole song for the first time. Probably the most important song in Clapton's huge catalog of music. Good choice and worth learning about the backstory. 🙏 Love your sensitivity and genuine reactions 💕
This song was written for a film called Rush. He wrote The Circus Left Town in memory for his son, as he was planning to take his son to this circus the day he died
This song kills me every time too. Clapton was in rehab from substance and alcohol abuse and thought his life was going well. How he held himself together after this is beyond me.
When we lost my 4yr old nephew the song that played on the radio that morning when the news broke was Frank Sinatra"s Fly Me To The Moon . The next one was this !! I had been his babysitter... I was 14yrs old . After all these years.. still miss you baby boy X X
I don't know where he found the strength to sing this song. I can't imagine losing a child, but to lose one who's still a baby and know he fell over 50 floors to his death! 💔💔💔💔💔
This song gets me every time. Lost my daughter 10 years ago. There is the old saying that time heals all wounds. That is not true. Things get better with time, but the scars never heal.
The song - while not initially being written for his son - it became a personal memorial for his 4yr old son who tragically died by falling out an apartment building nearly 30 years ago now; i guess before he actually recorded the song Then he changed it up a bit and made it more personal. The song became his therapy to heal from the loss.
I miss my daddy who passed 7 years ago...it feels like yesterday to me. I am way grown ,59 years old, but girls need their daddy. He was truly my person, my cheerleader, biggest fan and hardworking man, military vietnam vet! The best friend of my whole life. No one can replace him. I miss him a lot right now...always do but his Christmas was really rough without his smile, jokes and me n him playing guitars and singing songs together. I know I will see him one day in the presence of Jesus tho. Just seems like along time to wait...
If you knew the back story(losing his 4 year old son) I’m sure you would be tearing up. For him to make his son and most of all sing it after that tragic event is truly incredible.
Yes Eric Clapton had a young boy. It was just such a tragic story that I won't even mention it here but I'm sure you can look it up and read about it. This song helped heal him from all his grief.
I’m not a big fan of Eric Clapton but I thought this song was very courageous for him to write and sing. One of those songs in my hard to listen to playlist.✌️🎸
