Those were the days man. I remember my grandma getting this guy for my birthday when I was younger. She's not with us anymore but I still have this and lot more old movie figs displayed in my home.
I'm crying in tears of nostalgia, I miss those 2009 leader class figures, back then when Hasbro actually cared about quality, I'm glad I still have my 2009 leader class Optimus Prime in perfect condition. Now I collect masterpieces because they are the closest you are gonna get to compare to old leader class
I think the releases of Leader 09 Prime and Leader Starscream are a good example for how much Hasbro toy designers pour their heart n soul in creating these complex designs
Back when the price was reasonable and the quality was decent. The best bang for your back. Sadly, it seems toy companies nowadays don't care much about the quality when it comes to designing their toys.
A nasty double team of corporate greed and inflation. The prices are fine, given inflation but the decreased gimmicks, and size really seem underwhelming.
Tbf I think the global recession and plastic shortages that happened around 2012 majorly impacted the budget for a lot of these figures and figures moving forward. Not sure if Hasbro's recovered enough to finally go back to this era of quality and robustness, but my main point was that it wasn't as simple as "They stopped caring"
I got this guy around a couple years ago loose with just the electronics being messed up, and he's such a cool, fun figure, I love all the little gimmicks and playability like the weapons that come out of his forearms, I always loved those features. Crazy him and Optimus from that year were leaders, they'd be commanders or beyond today.
man, I agree- I've been going back, and getting Unicron Trilogy toys, they're so satisfying to just hold in altmode while you watch a movie on the couch 🛋, the collector market killed the gimmick toys! everyone kept demanding that they just wanted the characters! great review man, like a steak dinner ❤
Bro we had it sooo good back in the day! I remember seeing so many cool leaders and voyagers on shelves during the bayverse trilogy but I was too young and had to beg my parents. Now, I'm super grateful to have adult money and a dope 2nd hand collectors shop nearby.
You know I’ve never been a Masterpiece collector, but since I own this figure and Takara released this mold in the MPM line (albeit with a different paint scheme) I guess you can argue I technically own a Masterpiece figure lol.
When i owned this figure the gorilla arms and lack of wrist articulation drove me crazy trying to pose him in a cool way. I sold him when i got the masterpiece but i do miss those forearm flip out weapons. [edit after watching the whole thing] the proper leg transformation into jet mode is to do the Van Damme splits and then keep going all the way round. Then the weapon will fit in the gap between the wheels, clipping onto the pegs towards the front of that space. If you do that it can fold down the weapon to shoot the missile in jet mode. And obvs the missiles peg into the wings when not being used.
Fr bro like this wasn’t just a hunk of plastic this was packed full of fun, now you pay 80 bucks for something that you can only pose and put on your desk.
Oh man, you got that in one of your PO Boxes. I cant imagine sifting through a whole bunch of toys sent by someone and then finding a big leader class figure. I’m sure you had a lot of fun in that video.
Man I still wanna pick this Starscream up, I got the Coronation Starscream last year and it's pretty kool but I've always liked the movie version as well
I love the Michael bay movies ,I really do like this Design of this figure . my favorite starscreem is the deluxe class from dotm ,it was my first transformers figure ever!
I feel like Transformers Should have Multiple Faces or Heads with Expressions now Since the Prices are so high up having just a Blaster. And a Sword just doesn't make the whole thing 70 Bucks💀
I wish the voice for leader class starscream was similar to Michael Wincott as I wish he provided the voice for leader class starscream during toy production of the figure as Michael Wincott’s voice sounds way better than Charlie Adler’s.
Tbh they should go back to old leader figures and make some of these newer "leaders" their own class. If memory serves wasnt there a class in between leaders and voyagers at some point during the unicron trilogy? Ultra class if i remember. No way we should be paying 55 dollars for a slightly taller voyager or a voyager with a bunch of accessories. Meanwhile there are a few leader class figures that actually are big and actually feel like theyre worth the 55 dollars.
I literally just got Ultra Class Stormcloud (Powerglide repaint) and he is the size of modern Leaders. It would be nice if they made an in-between again.
I love this figure, I would for sure put him with my leader class tlk megatron, just because they don't look bad together, like how he doesn't look bad with ss blackout. Could you do a comparison with this guy and ss blackout and tlk megatron in bot and vehicle mood? Sorry if that's a big ask, love the videos btw, found you since ss05 optimus and have kept coming back
Nowadays I find myself buying more old figures than new. Just so much more plastic, paint, and size back then. Recent figures genuinely are starting to make me dislike the hobby.
I'd say I did good for Transforming one of these old Leader classes without instructions! lol Leader Sentinel Prime tho... that one's always been my nightmare. lol
I don't know what is happening with Hasbro lately, the new Rise of the Beast toys look interesting, but each version of a character looks different, between the legends, deluxe, studio series...etc. The three Cheetors look different to each other, as do the Airazors. And I am NOT getting those light and sound gimmick "Beast Mode" Optimus Prime and Bumblebee, they look so budget, it is ridiculous. Transformers is a long developed franchise, it seems like they want to kill it.
You asked two questions in this video that I feel deserve a measured response. 1)How much would this kind of Leader Class figure cost today? Answer: While this is far from an exact answer, you point out that the average Deluxe of the time was $10, and this figure was $40. A modern Deluxe is a much closer approximation of its 2010s counterpart, and costs $25 today. So, by that logic, one would expect a modern version of a $40 Leader to cost about $100 ($40×2.5). However, I'd think it would be closer to $120, given that modern Deluxe figures are still smaller and don't typically have the gimmick features of their counterparts of yesteryear. 2)Why can't they make figures for collectors and kids? Answer: speaking of gimmicks, this is why. Gimmick compatibility. Collectors want figures with a high degree of articulation and accuracy. This kind of figure requires a degree of engineering and complexity dedicated explicitly to making that figure work as a figure and an alt mode and have a transformation that works well. This is all a set of gimmick in their own right. The core gimmick of any transformer is the transformation. Kids want figures with action features. Sound effects. Automatic armor. Spring loaded weapons. These gimmicks also have to exist in a transforming figure. When you try to make something that has the high degree of complexity needed for collector-oriented figures, while including the features that kids want, you rarely please both crowds. In fact, historically, you disappoint both. Unless you make a hideously expensive toy, which also effectively remove kids as a target audience anyhow, a figure will be too compromised to make either group happy. The action features will compromise the articulation, accuracy, and/or transformation, and those features will invariably hamper the action gimmicks. Hasbro figured this out right around RotF, and split lines to better serve the target audiences. Better articulation and greater complexity for Collectors, simpler toys with more and varied action gimmicks for the kiddos.

Cherish your figures, but most importantly, cherish the memories you have with them.
W Grandma
Toys always represent a part of our memories. Cherish the figure and cherish the memories. And W Grandma
Keep that figure throughout your whole life, it will remind you of the good ol times you had with her
A year too late but your grandma was a G.
Those were the days, when deluxe classes were only like $13 and not $25, and there were no scalpers and resellers selling them for even more

Always thought Transformers back then had great detail, seeing this takes me back. I remember my cousin having this Starscream and Iron Hide

The good old time…
As far as jet transformers go RotF Deluxe Breakway/Thrust mold is still my favorite one.
That one's solid! Have you ever had the Terradive mold? That's one of, if not my fave!

I absolutely adore this figure, recently had 3 semi complete ones in my pursuit to repair a broken one, just a beast of a toy.
Before the dark times, before the price hikes.
Leader class now is just voyager class for the price of a leader class now
You know I’ve never been a Masterpiece collector, but since I own this figure and Takara released this mold in the MPM line (albeit with a different paint scheme) I guess you can argue I technically own a Masterpiece figure lol.
Actually the largest most heavy recent leader we've gotten was SS Grimlock, dude was a literal beast.
When i owned this figure the gorilla arms and lack of wrist articulation drove me crazy trying to pose him in a cool way. I sold him when i got the masterpiece but i do miss those forearm flip out weapons. Movie Bay Starscream is also an amazing sort of "Real life movie design" for the Dreadwing/Skyquake.
This figure was repainted into Movie 1 Starscream colors for the Masterpiece line not the newer ones but the leader class repaints.
Fr bro like this wasn’t just a hunk of plastic this was packed full of fun, now you pay 80 bucks for something that you can only pose and put on your desk.
I really don't like this Starscream design but you're right. This toy is fracking awesome.
I think the bay verse starscream is a really underrated design
I didn’t know this figure even had tow articulation when until now, that’s jcc
I remember back when this StarScream figure was leaked, and I remember freaking out over the figure.
RotF is still the best Movie line imo.

This toy and movie starscream go waaaaaaaaay back this is still my favorite Starscream for the movie toys
Though i still want the rotf
You can plug the gun under the jet belly, on the 2 thigh's pistons.
This design also what recoloured as the first Movie Masterpiece MPM1 based of 07 colors
god i miss having this figure
It would be cool if every TF toy had sounds, it makes sense for it to make the transformation sound
Kinda off topic, but Starscreams paint schene fits REALLY well on an F-22A

Ugh I tracked that Starscream down over my whole city but it was sold out, I haven't gotten over it.
I prefer the ROTF Voyager. They should have just upscaled that and fixed the forearms. would have been perfect.
I have the original mpm-10 starscream hes still good to this day
I know exactly how you feel! I mean all the bells and whistles.
You could do a top 5 or 10 vid just on your most favorite leader class tfs to really go through nostalgia like a prime
Maybe next life we will get leader class figures with the size of old and the possiblillity of new.
Well because not a days leader class is just voyagers with more suff
Where did You change the batteries.

Old vs new for this one against latest MPM, perhaps?
