Making an Adirondack Chair out of Salvaged Trex Decking Boards

  • In this video I make an Adirondack Chair out of some offcut Trex Transcend decking boards that were donated to me. Using these offcuts was a bit of a challenge at times but it's also a great way to be able to save a little money when it comes to building one of these Adirondack chairs. Plus the Trex material should hold up to the weather for years to come.

    Sharpie remover : lacquer thinner on a rag - no scrubbing.
    Sharpie is a lacquer pen.

    Thanks for such an educational video. The June 2023 issue of Woodworkers Journal features a redesigned Adirondack chair I plan to build using Trex. Your video answered all my questions about working with composite wood. Again thanks for educating this old Hokie (class of 1968)

      I’m so glad the video helped answer some questions you had! Thanks for watching. Good luck with your build and Go Hokies!! 🦃

    Thank you for sharing! I need 4 fire pit chairs and have been watching several videos to pick a style but I also want these to be maintenance free. Now the challenge is finding the materials.

      I am curious to see how many years I can get out of this chair. Should hold up quite well I’m hoping. Thanks for watching and good luck! 🙂

    Just found your channel. Nice build! Can you spray paint the areas that are rounded over so everything is the same color?

    • @rustydogandco
      @rustydogandco  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! I suppose you could find a good color match and paint it to match. I was going for lower maintenance for this chair and didn’t want to have to do too much to it in the future but I don’t see why you couldn’t paint them to be an even color.

      Also curious about this, not sure how well the different colored edge will look

    • @rustydogandco
      @rustydogandco  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MitchBegle I think it just depends on your personal preference. For me I don’t really ever notice the slightly different colors. I think when you look at the chair as a whole that color inconsistency does not immediately catch the eye. At least not to me. I was more interested in the maintenance free aspect of this type of material so for me that outweighed any possible color uniformity issues. But like I said…everyone is different. So really it just would come down to personal preference and if you felt it would be something that would bug you. Thanks for watching! 🙂

      @@rustydogandco fair enough! Thank you for posting a full video. I struggled to find one of someone actually cutting in to the material to gauge the difficulty

    • @rustydogandco
      @rustydogandco  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MitchBegle No problem! I didn’t find it to be too difficult to cut and I have mostly basic beginner-grade tools. Does create a bit of a mess though but most every project seems to haha.

    You mentioned the chair was solid. After one year, have you seen any problems with durability/flexing when the boards are warm from the sun, or when larger than average relatives sit in the chair?

    • @rustydogandco
      @rustydogandco  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      The chair honestly feels just as solid a year later as it did when I built it. Most of the time my husband sits in it and he agreed that he hasn’t noticed any wear or flexing of the trex material. Some of the screws (even though they are exterior grade) have oxidized some so it seems like if anything they would fail before the trex boards do but I guess only time will tell. I will also point out that the color of the trex hasn’t faded any a year later from the sun which I wasn’t sure if it would. Hope that helps! 😊

    Very nice build. But if you had to buy the materials it would be waaay more expensive and probably better to just buy at that point.

    • @rustydogandco
      @rustydogandco  ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct. It only really made sense for me since I was using donated offcuts. Otherwise it is more cost effective to build out of wood or buy an already assembled composite material chair. Thanks for watching! 😊

    Could you build 1 chair out of a 16' trex board?

    • @rustydogandco
      @rustydogandco  ปีที่แล้ว

      I would think 1 - 16ft board would probably not be enough to build the whole thing out of based on the plans I used. You could try to alter the size of the chair to try and accommodate one board but again I’m not sure if it would get you all the pieces you might need for the type of chair I built. Good luck! 😊
