- This past week was the trivia season 2 finale! One of the segments was a bunch of startup sounds from old gaming consoles and operating systems. That PS2 sound is so distinct. Haven't heard it in 20 years, but nailed it.

@@NickRudy Yeah I looked it up. Win 10 never actually used that startup sound, even though it was its original sound.
The real Win 10 (including 7 and 8 series) all use the Vista startup sound.

Fun bit of trivia: The Windows 95 boot up sound was made by Brian Eno....on a Mac.
@@Aether-Entropy I read an article on it and I've got to admit, Brian has professionalism down to a T; the dude can't stand using Windows yet he still went ahead and made the boot up sound for 95.
@@MythicSuns Back then music production was quite horrible on Windows and didn't really improve until the past decade. The way Audio Drivers and Mixer Routing works on Unix based OS is just better. Soo Eno was just a victim of the technical deficiencies.
@@Neojhun Honestly I've found I'm the same, but that's largely because I only use Ableton Live 9 and find it more convenient to work with a trackpad on a laptop; Ableton 9's trackpad gestures are either rubbish or non-existent on Windows whilst on a Mac they're mostly perfect (minus the weird lack of a pinch to zoom option). I've found outputting audio to be an inconsistent experience on Windows, at least as far as the headphone port is concerned; sometimes it works perfectly, sometimes it doesn't.
I still use Windows because despite its compatibility issues along the way it still seems to handle backwards compatibility better than Mac OS. I'm also getting CGI rendering which on my 2015 Macbook Pro is a tedious and lengthier than normal process because it doesn't have a dedicated GPU, but on my Lenovo gaming laptop it's a lot faster (I won't get into which PC rig is the best because I've never really reached a clear conclusion in the years I've been researching PC rigs, but I know my Lenovo does most of what I need it to and I'll upgrade it later when I feel the time is right).

I cannot hear the PS1 intro without also remembering the sound of the disc being read. It was so loud, but that was part of the experience.
I know it isn't part of it, but the chime of the Metal Gear Solid 1 konami logo occupies the same space in my brain

I've owned every single PlayStation device and I really cannot remember the PSP's or PS3's bootup sound.
I wonder whether I would recognize them though.

8:35 that was actually the sound at the end of the HoloLens commercial. Windows 10 uses the same startup sound as Windows Vista

@@FlyingLine they did listen once because they added dark mode to task manager so maybe put it on feedback hub and they’ll listen after enough requests.
@@Worthy_Edge w11 startup sound has no point btw. Previous startup sounds would only play after you're in the desktop, symbolising that your pc is ready to use. W11's startup sound occurs on lock screen for some reason, after which you also need to enter your password and the system will actually load an environment for some time. Why add a startup sound if your system won't be ready by the time you hear it then???

My exact thoughts! Had to have multiple PS2 repaired with the will not read disc issue
I used to have one of those disk-reconditioner things that you would put the disk in and rotate it with the pads to fix bad disc that were scratched up.
Once my dad bought my the brand new GTA SA at the time, and I put it in the cleaner, for no reason, I just wanted it 'extra clean', and I didn't use it properly and completely destroyed the disk.
Fun times.

PS1 and PS2 startup sounds are still, to this day, some of most spacey-sounding bits of abstract sound design I've ever heard.
I miss the good ol' days of futuristic abstract startup sounds and skeuomorphic graphic design. 😔

I had a ps2 but then it got smashed on the floor and still works the disc tray makes weird noises now.
Nothing makes me feel older than realising people can hear the PS1 startup sound and not immediately know where it's from.

I heard the PS1 sound and was immediately prepared to play Spyro or Tony Hawk Pro Skater. Instantly took me right back to my childhood.
When they played the PS2 sound I watched that whole boot screen in my head, perfect 1080p clarity

Funny you should say that, I was screaming at my computer! Surprised they didn't do the windows 98 startup sound that should have been the one to immediately bring them back in time. A lot of people started on 98, so yeah. Oh well! Guess that's for another time! I just know they will never ever miss the windows 98 startup sound they'd be flipping their boards like 5 seconds later! Not even kidding! A few seconds after they heard the 98 startup sound they'd be rushing to show their answers!

Yes, it's what you'll find when you search it up on TH-cam, but it's actually taken from the "Microsoft HoloLens". Never ever was it used in Windows 10. Windows 10's start up sound is disabled by default, but it's the same one that was used for vista/7/8/8.1
@@frankksong not on "some laptop", it's muted on every Windows 10 device by default. You have to enable a startup sound, which most people didn't do.
The playstation 2 startup just gives me horror vibes as a child. Especially when the red screen showed up :))))

I actually got a red screen of death on my PS2. I just popped the tray open took the disc out and it went back to the main menu.
PS2 had some history defining horror games, so it fits.
There's a PS5 in their studio. If they play Astro's Playroom, they'd actually encounter all the start up sounds from the original PS up to PS5 😁

I haven't got TH-cam TV or Windows 10 right (especially since you have to go into the settings to turn on the Win10 startup sound), but I did get everything else right.
I would've even added that the PS2 and PS1 sounds were specifically with a game disc in the drive since the sounds for those two changed depending on if you have a game inserted or not.
I gotta give huge props to the team; I went into this thinking I’d nail every single one, but I was genuinely stumped as well! A surprisingly fun segment for sure.
As someone with a decade on even Marques it was fun watching people struggle with sounds that were my childhood all the way through college :).
The mobile one's were new to me though!
Also there's some great audio nerd tips/hints on some of these. My favourite isn't featured, but the Windows NT 4 sound is the same sound for startup and shutdown but reversed for shutdown.
The PS1 start up sound gave me chills, so much nostalgia flooding in.

I have never heard that Windows 10 startup sound before. When I enable startup sounds I just get the ol' Windows 7 and Windows 8 startups.

The Dreamcast and Playstation have the best sounds. Iconic. If you started up a dreamcast with a powerful 5.1 system, the whole neighborhood felt it turn on.

Got all of them, the win95 and ps2 sounds were such a part of my childhood that I was yelling at the screen. Even the TH-cam app sound that I hear daily on my roku.
Even tho my personal favorite was the startup sound of GameCube, the first PlayStation is too epically iconic, shockingly only one person answered correct, I was screaming in front of the screen!!! Anyway, fun video, I really enjoyed it.

Even better, I clearly remember loading Battle Arena Toshienden and putting in my Mic Geranimo CD and fighting to the sounds of The Natural. You had to be there....
The original PlayStation startup sound soothes me. It’s a blast from the past that reaches deep into my bones. I don’t think there is a better startup sound or a more iconic one. It’s that hit that perks you up and gets you ready for the adventures ahead.

The PS2 & Windows XP were instantly recognisable for me. I recall the anxiety when the PS2 start-up sound goes quiet before you get the "Playstation 2" text and you're praying the game would load.

when it came to the youtube app sound, I had to test it on my roku tv, on my tcl tv, and that is the sound it played. Never knew it had a sound to begin with ever.

The PS2 sound… so much nostalgia. I remember my brother and I praying to the PlayStation gods that the gods would read and the console would boot up coz a lot of the time we’d get that weird little spinny circle screen.
I seriously got all of them right except the second to last sound of Windows 95. I thought it was the startup sound for AOL😅😅! Also, I'll admit that a good chunk of these sounds I never personally experienced and I only know them from heading them online or elsewhere 😅

I can feel that PS1 startup sound in my dna. It immediately brings me back to playing Digimon Rumble Arena in a tent in my best friend's back yard using an extension cable and that tiny-ass clip-on screen.
We sat cross-legged, hunched over, and played it ALL night. Such good memories, man.
Listening to them talk about the stuff they grew up with, "My dad had a Windows 95 computer," was extremely depressing for me. My first machine was an Apple IIe and I've had every version of Windows since 3.11 for Workgroups. I got them all but one. I did think the PS2 sound was for PS1 and I was mad at myself for mixing them up because I had both and I know better. They're so different from each other. And they did PS1 as the last one and I felt even worse about it because it's so obvious. Also, I am so old.

The moment I heard the playstation one start up I immediately had goosebumps. One of the best consoles ever for me. I still own both the original brick one and the smaller cd player one and they are my treasures.
