The freakiest experience I've had with Google's data was a few months ago I was looking for a sushi restaurant in my area. I found one that looked interesting and I thought maybe I had been to it before. I was skimming the details to see and I noticed "You visited here 7 years ago". I clicked on that and it gave me a full location history for that day: the time I left my apartment, the time I picked up my carpool, the time I got to work, when i left work, dropped off my carpool, got home, got to the restaurant, and got home again. All of this from some random Tuesday 7 years ago...

@@89humaiz yea, it does, it tracks aroud random free wifi point and if you have data, but without internet connection it nearly does not track at all and about the battery saving, now display off tracking really dont consume that much power (maps do, because display is on and still moving)

In reference to Google helping you pick chocolate / best wines:
We're ceding the discovery of life to algorithms... I think it's the humdrum of looking through a shelf, and the surprises you make from your own choices which really makes a lot of life magical. I think it's a bit of a shame we may be losing the ability to just 'suffer' through and pick out options for ourselves.

For the businesses that automatically hang up, what if Google made a Google Assistant but for businesses? So Pizza Hut has an AI that would communicate with your AI and your business can get through. Don't know if that's plausible or not but why can't an AI just order through an app anyway. Chipotle has it to where you don't need to speak with anybody and your order is literally on a shelf. Why can't I just say "hey Google order my usual"?

For me the day I realized how much data Google is collecting was a few years back. I was visiting grandparents with my family about a 2h drive from home. When I looked at my phone there, I had a Google notification about the traffic situation for my way home. By that time I had never used Google maps as navigation, I had never explicitly given a home address, I had literally never searched for any traffic situation and best of all, my phone's GPS was switched off, so it figured out where I was some other way, probably WiFi or data.
It's honestly not even that impressive, but I'll probably never forget that.

@Andrew, as far as Google taking individual's images, I now understand why my reviews in Google Maps get so many more views when I take a picture of the inside of a restaurant or business. Google has basically been subtly incentivizing reviewers to take photos indoors at businesses.

UK supermarkets have had 'smart shop' handsets or phone apps for customers for years now. They already enable personalised pricing (which is uncomfortable!), and some apps attempt a shopping list feature, but it feels like the perfect proving ground for an AR system. Knowing and influencing customers' route and attention in the store more directly would surely be really valuable. Perhaps it's beyond even supermarkets' data expertise and they would need to partner with Google or Amazon? It drives me mad when familiar shop layouts change and I can't find what I want.

  • @MythicSuns

The ideal smart speaker for me would be one that behaves almost exactly like the computer from Star Trek: The Next Generation. Yeah I know it's not real but shows like Star Trek TNG are good at giving us a window into what future technology could look like.
The computer in TNG pretty much had a human level of reading speech patterns; it could tell the difference between someone pausing to think of what to say next and pausing because they've finished making the request, and on top of that it pretty much never misunderstood a request and could tell the difference between someone requesting its help by saying "computer" and someone just using the word "computer" generally.
Plus it never pretended to be human like a lot of the smart assistants do today.

I try asking Google intelligent questions of curiosity and the results are never what I'm talking about, the answers are way off. But then, I get a Google Rewards survey, and they're like, 'Did you just search one of these phrases?' I pick mine and they're like, 'Why did you search this particular phrase?' Um. Cuz I was looking for the answer to my question, or really, what would Google response be to my question? (I really do respond properly and and tell them why I was looking up my question on Google, though)
The other Google Rewards Survey that comes up after I search Google is: Two sets of results from Google and the question is: 'Which of these results is most helpful?' It's unfortunate that in that scenario, you don't get to choose "Neither" as an option.

Short take: Companies doing AI hoover SO MUCH data that it is inconceivable to humans what is being collected and used. It is more on the level of Batman's SONAR or the DC Oracle software, collating _everything_ from billions (yes, with a B) of sources and shoving it through ML to find patterns that humans cannot. In fact, people purposefully hiding from others (like say, from a stalker) are easily identifiable from data as simple as food pictures showing up in given locations over a certain amount of time, or at a pattern of times. This is not hyperbole. Read the Snowden reports if you don't believe me, and then realize that those were released in *2013.*
3:01 If you track new work in these areas (like 2 Minute Papers) you'll see that Google (and others) absolutely can stitch rooms and spaces together using people's photos uploaded (Local Guides, for example, who were volunteers...)
8:41 _"whats the problem with a stranger asking for the weather"_ - First, it's a security hole. The likelihood of it allowing more nefarious data to be leaked is not high, granted. But also imagine you piss off your neighbor, who sets a recording to ask for the weather loudly every 2 minutes...
8:53 _"look to activate_" - error rate is the problem. None of these ML (machine learning) algorithms are 100% accurate. So an error rate is always involved, and that can be hacked. In addition, the error rate drops as processing capability drops, so without the hardware to do difficult ML estimates like face recognition (which has a HORRIBLE accuracy problem historically) it could take too long or be too easy to misidentify.
13:12 SO MUCH FRICKING DATA to make these general ML systems work! And many of these companies are coming up with ethics disclaimers only _because they have been sued into it._

It's a lot of data, but I kinda like giving it. They return the data with benefits I use or am interested in often, like timelines and memories.

Same. I frequently hear people talk about not using some Google product, because they don't want to give them their data. And that's great and all, but to me Google is one of the few companies, where I actually think giving them my data is worth it.

So long as Google makes their privacy policy easy to read through and well formatted in cards rather than paragraphs as well as an easy opt out I’m all for Google making physical hardware more intelligent. And like it asks you before using the service.

Even if you turned mics off, it's still on always and the thought of that is kinda not nice. I mean I don't mind that much but because of that I'm mainly an apple user and I use custom ROM for android(but it's pain in the ass to work, and the lack of convenience and stuff).
