  • A church erected with financial support (1823) from the Board of First Fruits (fl. 1711-1833) representing an important component of the early nineteenth-century ecclesiastical heritage of County Wexford with the architectural value of the composition, one attributed (1824) to the little known John Meason of Wexford (RCB), confirmed by such attributes as the standardised nave-with-entrance tower plan form, aligned along a liturgically-correct axis; the "pointed" profile of the openings underpinning a contemporary Georgian Gothic theme with the chancel defined by a restrained "East Window"; and the obelisk-topped battlements embellishing the tower as a picturesque eye-catcher in the landscape. Having been reasonably well maintained, the elementary form and massing survive intact together with substantial quantities of the original fabric, both to the exterior and to the deconsecrated interior where contemporary joinery; and wall monuments signed by Thomas Kirk RHA (1781-1845) of Dublin and Thomas Fagan (d. 1894) of Sallystown, all highlight the considerable artistic potential of a church making a pleasing visual statement in a rural street scene.

The Celtic Cross has a very interesting history and designs. The Cross of Cong is worth researching for those that are interested. It is a 12th century Irish Christian processional cross inscribed Tarridelbach Un Conchobair, (1156. ) King of Connacht and High King of Ireland. Enjoyed the video. Cheers.

This first part has nothing to do with the video but when I listen to the introduction it brought back a memory that when I was a child my Grandad used to always call me Irish Eyes and laugh at me.
One day I asked him why he called me that and he said because I’m usually either smiling or up to no good.
He is one of my Irish ancestors that I’m trying to trace his Irish ancestors.
Back to the video I am seeing little child spirits playing there

Hi there Irish Eyes, just want to ask before I watch all the video, I’m presuming this church built 1824 replaced a previous one on this site? I’m asking because of the stone at the entrance about Mr Grogan having been hung in 1728 was then buried here? Also do you think his wealthy family would have paid for a good headstone to have been erected, even though he had been hung, would it possibly be on the site Find a grave that Ron uses in Faces of the forgotten? I’m just thinking of someone else having found it there and getting it noted if you follow me. Sorry to waffle on..was fascinating to read that stone. Helen xx

This may seem like a stupid question, but I'm not familiar with the burial practices in Ireland. When we see a headstone with multiple names listed on it, in what appears to be a single grave site, are all of those individuals buried in that one space?

    • @GraveVisitations
