I'm Brazilian and I started learn English and Korean, so this conversation helped me a lot about have more consistance 'cause I used this method (listening and watching) in my French's studies when I was 14 years old and was incredible. I learned SO much from this interview. Thank you both!
(And an honorable mention of Steven Kauffman.)
Already knowing that immersion and input are essential, I've been watching dramas, and doing a lot of 'watch-listening'.
For Korean I have found some home and garden programs, that I watch, and watch-listen to.
This is very helpful, to get the natural flow of the language.
I have also used (Duolingo) for Korean, which has been helpful in slowly learning to read.
But the sentence structure is *really* challenging!
And now, I'm on numbers and counting, and it's really exhausting my brain...
(Learning Arabic was *easy" compared to Korean grammar!)

Really helpful video. The only thing I would like to understand that makes me wonder is, when as beginners we watch all content without subtitles how we can understand if for mostly of the scenes are like two people sitting and talking. I watched a few k-dramas and many scenes are talking to each other without any type of visual that can make you understand what they are talking about, I mean at least I would like to understand the context of the conversation. This is annoying because anyway I know I'm an absolute beginner and I want to improve and I enjoy watch a content but I enjoy also because I can understand and follow the story. If I just watch and at the end of the content I didn't understand anything about its story, for me it's really hard to repeat watching another content. If you can answer to me, thanks!!! 😀

    • @didikoreanpodcast
      @didikoreanpodcast  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Sorry for the late reply!!! I missed this for some reason 😭
You can find more detailed explanations on John’s channel, but since I've also tried his language learning method, I'll explain it briefly! Keep in mind that this method might not suit everyone.
He suggests that if you’re a complete beginner, you should choose content that you can enjoy even if you don’t fully understand the language. For example, dramas with handsome or beautiful actors, dramas with good soundtracks, animations with beautiful art that you can’t stop watching, or movies with stunning visuals and direction could be good choices. Conversation-heavy content, like videos where people just sit and talk (like my podcast), can be hard to understand for absolute beginners. So when watching TH-cam, it might be helpful to choose content that is visually rich in context, like mukbangs or vlogs. It’s also crucial to choose content that you find genuinely interesting. For example, since your level is like that of a child, watching videos meant for children might be easier to understand, but it can be a frustrating process. I hope you can explore various content and find good sources! 화이팅!!🔥

I think the big problem with dictionaries, translator apps, English subtitles etc., is that your brain knows that if it's lazy and doesn't struggle to understand then you'll just bring out the help. But most of us can't just figure out new words and new grammar only from context (except when we get better at the language). We need that help usually. Or if we've seen it somewhere else already (like on a flash card). So it's probably better to mix it up and put away the helping tools sometimes but then use them later sometimes too.

Just listen to the tonal movement of John's speech. It goes high and low in a very natural manner; very comparable to Didi's tones. If I had to guess, most Americans sound like robots when speaking Korean. They certainly do when speaking Norwegian which is also a tonal language. The similarities of tone are probably what drew me to learning Korean.

Interesting insight! Conversely, when Koreans learn English, many instructors advise them to avoid the monotony often found in Korean speech patterns, encouraging them to use varied intonations instead of a flat tone 🤣

People with low level tend to talk like robots regardless of language because it's still difficult to express themselves, let alone sound natural at the same time. Some people have really good accent even at beginner level, but I don't think it's common when confronted with having to use the language in real life. It's a common party trick by "TH-cam polyglots". There is one who makes videos about learning Korean and they normally sounded really amazing in Korean, truly great accent... until one day they released a video that was an unscripted conversation on a topic that wasn't about language learning. Wow did they sound different. It was easy to tell they weren't actually advanced in the language, unlike what was always showed in their normal scripted videos with perfect accent.
There's someone else I discovered like this lol they sound great in their own Korean speaking videos, but someone released an unedited interview with them and they were like "ummm...하하...ummm........헤헤" the whole time and they could barely express themselves, let alone have a natural accent.
The guy in this video is on another level, he's actually fluent and can express his ideas clearly and efficiently...very impressive!

Whenever I try to speak Korean people always think I'm drunk 🤣 I'm also thinking about speaking Korean to whoever starts an argument with me. I will babble out some Korean sentence like 너무 웃겨서 배가 아파. They'll get confused and walk away. Do you think it will work? 😂
