    I’m a heavy hip hop listener and recently started listening to Pink Floyd. The album that grabbed my attention was Wish You Were Here with cuts like Welcome To The Machine and Have A Cigar.

      @@Bambolyy I think this idea stems from the fact that they put out a lot of grand sounding music that makes you feel your place in the universe as small but curious? thats what i get from it i guess...its an experience not just a listen but in my opinion you really got to be in the mood for this to enjoy it.

      brandon lloyd they make concept albums. This is a great band but their most influential work is meant to be listened as a whole. In other words, you gotta hear the whole album to appreciate the songs because they will all be connected. I recommend “dark side of the moon” it’s the most accessible because most people will relate. It’s about all things in life. The Music is good but the lyrics are key. So if you like hip hop this is actually easy to understand. After that I’d say watch “the wall” it’s a movie about losing your humanity. It’s a movie album I guess you could say. Good luck. I hope you enjoy.

    • @emcsquare5045
      @emcsquare5045 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Dark Side of the moon, it a perfect album, every song is part of the story, you can listen to them individually and love them, but as a whole it's mind blowing. They're so technical that every note, every drum hit is never too much or too little, it's litterally perfect. Take the song time, the lead in keeps you on the edge waiting for whats to come, and the lyrics can literally make you reevaluate your life and whats important.
      The same for the album the wall.
      The album Animals takes a look at different groups in society and breaks them down to different animals, pigs being the bourgeoisie, where as Dogs being the proletariat and the sheep follow one or the other.
      They truly are a thinking man's band.
      And watching your reactions I already know that if you gave them a chance you'd get it.

  • @acwaid
    @acwaid 4 ปีที่แล้ว +40

    PF is in a class by itself. Most of their albums were concept albums, meaning each song blends into the next to tell a larger story. This song is off ‘The Wall’ which tells the story of a boy who lost his dad in WW II, had an overprotective mother, and grew into becoming a rock star who slowly dove deeper into madness, building a metaphorical ‘wall’ around him separating himself from life and reality. Very philosophical stuff. The Dark Side of the Moon is also a concept album, and is also one of the best albums ever created. I believe it holds the record for most weeks on the Billboard charts.

    hey man, love that you're dipping your toes into some different shit here and there. My 2cents - I'd recommend sticking to album versions of the real "classics", the live versions are typically best for people who are already mega-fans of the song rather than folks experiencing it for the first time. There are notable exceptions, of course, few things can compare to seeing Pantera - "Domination", or Nightwish - "Ghost Love Score" live, but for the vast majority of songs I'd say you'll have a better experience listening to the studio track.
    Just my 2cents though. Regardless, lovin this channel bro, keep doin what you're doin and we'll keep showing up to rock out with ya

    Love, man.
    Edit: The studio version was more... Likable for me, but live has its purpose!
    Edit 2: if you want more of their work to go through, I would have to say "listen to time + the geat gig in the sky"
    The two songs talk about the same thing, from two different perspectives. The second completes the first.
    While time has more lyrics, and sets the context, "The great gig in the sky" is more visceral and gets you with raw emotions. If you can, listen to them one after the other!

    Dude loved you dipping in.
    I'm an "older" Brit who grew up with Floyd and Zeppelin (good Zepp recommendations in other comments)
    Floyd have their own sound. If you want to see them "back in the day" Echoes live at Pompeii where the guys play in an empty Roman Amphitheater with no audience! (yes it's a long track with a slow build but a Dreadnought of an ending)
    BTW they always seemed to "hide" on stage and let the music speak.
    Someone recommended "Time" from Dark Side of the Moon (you might want to Google sales figures and time in the charts for that Album.)
    Anyway DSotM is a Concept Album, so like a book the chapters make more sense played in order. I would also strongly recommend having the lyrics to hand. There's always a story in the poetry!
    Word of warning, if you get hooked it's a hell of a rabbit hole, so buckle up dorethy kansas is about to go bye bye! 😂

But Pink Floyd is etched into my soul in a way that's utterly indescribable to say the least, this song in particular is my escape from the horrid reality that life sometimes throws our way. It's my much needed calm in a hectic reality. I'll put headphones on, close my eyes and just listen. It puts me in a trance of musical delight and devotion. When you talk about Eminem's pen game, you gotta think about Pink Floyd and their guitar game. Their solos are masterclasses.
    PF have to be one of the best groups in the world. I don't think its too contentious to say they're in that 'Masters of Music' tier even if they aren't your favourite. So, if you go down the Pink Floyd rabbit hole, I really am hoping it's one you enjoy as you understand what their music is. As you've seen, they can be lyrically quite sparse and it's very moody. These guys understood music and made it their bitch pretty quickly.

      @@imjustbarelygettingstarted7352 This live version is one of the rare ones that has so much more impact than the studio version, even though the studio version is a materpiece, the pulse live version is even better. When I saw it, it blew my mind that it could be better, but that extended solo takes it to another level. I can't believe people suggest the studio version over this one. For nearly every other Pink Floyd track, absolutely, but this is the exception.

    Pink Floyd is a very deep band... musically, lyrically, live performances (lights, sound & production), etc... 1965 - 2014!! Lots of goodness in all those years; honestly it's impossible to state what is their best stuff - that IMO is up to the listener.
    * I would recommend understanding the lyrics and or the entire album concept (yes, whole album's are one concept; well not all of them). The easiest way to resolve not knowing the story or meaning behind the song or album is to look up the title on wikipedia and then if you wish the lyrics while listening (wearing headphones); you'll be glad you did. Pink Floyd is The G.O.A.T.!!!
    I myself suggest: 1) "Comfortably Numb" 2) "Shine on you crazy Diamond" I-V 3) "Us and Them/Any Colour You Like/Brain Damage/Eclipse" (all 4 parts) 4) "High Hopes" 5) "Time/Breathe Reprise" 6) "Dogs" 7) "Pigs (3 different ones)"- - - Anything from the live "Pulse" DVD (1994) is phenomenal!! Here is a song listing (link) >> en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pulse_(1995_film)#DVD_track_listing
    Fact: "You don't need drugs to enjoy Pink Floyd but you definitely need Pink Floyd to enjoy your drugs!!"

    Been here since 12k subs, love hip hop, but pink floyd is epic.

I grew up on rap and it is and always will be my favorite however this is the greatest band of all time by far. You will get so lost in thought and admiration of how amazing these guys are. I promise you if you listen to even just the songs I suggested I guarantee you will be a fan for life. But don’t watch the live versions especially since you watching the live show after they broke up and are older! I know you ain’t even gonna read this so you will be missing out

  • @zebrion5793

    This song has a pretty deep backstory if you look into it. It's about how a lot of bands from that time used to have "doctors" come back and give them heroin back stage at their shows. A lot of times performers would just pass tf out and miss their own shows or have to cancel because of the drug use. The "comfortably numb" is the addiction and the loss of feeling anything when you're high like that. If you've ever had surgery and had morphine, it's a very similar thing, and some of those guys were on drugs like that for years and years of touring. They got to the point that they couldn't function without the drugs. They didn't want to feel anything at all.
    The song is really mellow and chill, but it's about drug addiction and how it makes you numb to everything around you.

    • @hihoktf
      @hihoktf 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not true at all. The comfortably numb state they're referring to is a mental state not particularly associated with drug use. In the story, 'Pink' is catatonic because he has built a metaphorical wall around himself to withdraw from the pain of his negative life experiences. Although the doctor gives him a drug to get him going, the story has relatively little to do with drugs, and everything to do with a tortured psychological journey. Even the genesis of the song is only related to an incident where Roger Waters was given a tranquilizer, not a mind altering drug, because he had stomach cramps. Although they were known as psychedelic, it's myth that they were heavy into, and wrote about, drug culture. Virtually nothing of what they did (outside of with Syd Barrett very early on) has meaning associated with drugs or is drug inspired.

    This song is a state of mind, seriously like feeling doped and calm without actually having to take anything & usually has many life memories attached to it. The vocals when they are much older are different than the original. The original version is the classic. It was originally recorded in '79 I think. They're in their friggin 70s now in this video.

    Just so you know, when he was 'finally moving' the only reason was to get that exact sound and distortion out of his guitar, otherwise he wouldn't have bothered. He never did, even when he was young. For proof, watch Echos Live at Pompeii , Part 1 and 2. It was filmed in 1972 I believe. (Comfortably Numb was released on the album The Wall in 1979). Pink Floyd concerts were ALWAYS about the MUSIC and the LIGHTS / EFFECTS, never the members dancing / prancing around. They were the first to DO light shows, pretty much.

    Stevie Knight: "Pink Floyd isn't really on my radar."
    Avro Arrow: They are now, eh? 😆
    I could tell that you were bored but I knew damn well that it wouldn't last.
    At 6:43 Stevie be like "Aw man, WTF is this shit?"
    At 6:56 Stevie be like "OH MAN! WTF IS THIS SHIT?!"
    I was just sitting there, waiting, wondering how long before Stevie's face changed the way that EVERYBODY'S face changes once that solo begins. After thirteen seconds, it was all over and Steve was hooked past the point of no return. It took all of thirteen seconds for Steve to go from "Aw shit...." to "Oh shit...." once the greatest guitar solo in music history began and THAT is what makes it the greatest guitar solo in history. It literally changes you and your worldview, making you realise that before hearing this, you were incomplete and unknowing because if something like this existed for so long and you didn't know about it, what else could you be missing?
    Ladies and gentlemen, it has now been proven that it takes all of thirteen seconds to go from "I am NOT a fan of Pink Floyd" to "I will ALWAYS be a fan of Pink Floyd" when you've been exposed to this solo. It doesn't matter who you are, where you're from or even what language you speak, you WILL melt to the sound of David Gilmour''s Stratocaster when you hear him play this.
    RESISTANCE IS FUTILE!
