  • Booleans allow you to add Subtools together, subtract them from one another, and create new pieces from where the Subtools intersect within the ZBrush interface. To determine if you want to use an addition, subtraction, or intersection object you just need to activate the corresponding operator on the SubTool. Join Scott as he provides a detailed tutorial on using this function and improve your digital production capabilities.

    I've been trying to grasp booleans for almost 2 months and this is the first tutorial that actually clicked for me.
    Thanks a mill!

    Thank you so much, I had been trying to figure out how to do this for a while and had no idea what booleans were for. You helped a lot.

      Thank you for the question. Here is the response from our tech team: I’m assuming you are referring to the icons for the cubes and spheres on the top right in the Tool Palette. Those are different Documents in my overall Project. Let’s say I need a sphere and box in the same project but I’m going to sculpt them separately. I can bring in my sphere, drag it out onto the screen, go into Edit Mode, and Make Polymesh 3D. The sphere will be shown as the larger icon since that is the one I’m currently working on. Then to add the box, I can go to the Document palette and select New Document, click on SimpleBrush to expand the menu, select the box, draw it out on the screen, go into Edit Mode, and Make Polymesh 3D. My sphere will still be in that area as a separate document I can click into and start sculpting, or click into the box and sculpt there. It allows for multiple meshes to be worked as one project, most likely with the intention of bringing them all together at some point. When you’re ready to add the box sculpt to the sphere sculpt, you can select the sphere sculpt, and in the Subtool Palette, append the box sculpt into that document. Make sure to select File > Save As to save the whole project so those individual documents are saved as well.

    when i try to boolean intersection, the subtool that it gives me is exactly the same and unchanged, instead of giving me a new one with the changes?

    • @RioGrande1944
      @RioGrande1944  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      From our tech team: I would check to see if the geometry looks the way you want with Live Boolean enabled. If it doesn’t show anything, make sure both subtools are visible by clicking the eye icon to show them. Make sure the top subtool has the arrow selected so you can see “Start” showing on that subtool, and the second subtool has the Boolean intersection icon selected. After you click the Make Boolean Mesh button, a new tool will show in your Project, most likely with the term “UMesh” in front of it.

      When the boolean operation is complete it generates the new mesh as a new tool, it does not alter the current subtool. If you do not want it to generate the new mesh as a new tool, put whatever you are booling into a folder and when you are ready to bool, hit the folder option button (the gear icon) and select boolean with subdiv, it will place the booled item below your folder instead of as a new tool.

    While following your lesson, my gizmo starts working weird. (I am a newbie in zbrush, but I worked with matrix from 2011.) For example, when stretching a cylinder it loses its shape and takes on an hour glass shape as it stretches. When turning the cylinder it takes on a s shape. But after restarting zbrush the gizmo works fine for a while before it starts warping my work. Does the gizmo need adjustment or is there something I'm doing wrong? Why is this happening? Has anyone else experienced something something similar?

      Hello Natasha. Scott says that in a recent update, ZBrush added the ability to use Focal Shift with the Gizmo. He advises that after you turn on the Gizmo to make sure that Focal Shift is set to -100 so everything scales uniformly. Focal Shift is the slider just above Draw Size at the top of your screen. We hope this helps, but please let us know if you have any other questions!

    Will I ever get shading issues in booleans in Zbrush, which happens considerably more in the topology-based workflow like blender or Maya?

      Hello, we will ask our Tech Team and get back to you with their answer!

      Hello, our Jewelry Tech Team got back to us and they said that while they personally haven’t seen that, Booleans can create some strange topology transitions at the Boolean site. Using ZRemesher or Dynamesh should take care of that after the Boolean is executed. Hope this answers your question and feel free to reach to us if you have any other questions! Thank you for your support!

    I can´t to the method you do on minute 25:10, I merge both subtools but when dynamesh they stay the same =(

      Hello, we will go ahead and have our Tech Team take a look at this and see if we can provide some help for you!

    • @RioGrande1944
      @RioGrande1944  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello we spoke to our Tech Team and they said that when doing Booleans with Dynamesh, the first subtool in your list has to be a Dynamesh object. Select on the tool whether you want the dynamesh to add or subtract, then once you have combined the two together, re-dynamesh and that should create the Boolean. We hope this helps out! Let us know if you have any other questions.
