- I Originally reviewed this game on May 13th 2018 for Steam and here we are a year and change later and I;m reviewing this again!
Can I just start off this review by giving a shout out to SebaGames (The One Man Developer of this game) for having worked hard to develop this game for years on his own making what is now my all time favorite beat em up? This man deserves all praise for this game because it is truly a gem that YOU NEED TO PLAY!! All in all
FnR is a game that is now my favorite brawler and will always be played by me and honestly desereves to be metioned in the pantheon of any converstion mentioning great brawlers such as Streets of Rage, Final Fight, Double Dragon, River City Ransom, BattleToads and Sengoku 3. The game offers extremely satisfying action, a robust and deep moveset, a deceptively dark storyline, and easy to pick up yet challenging to master combot system and the best OST in fighting game since SoR2. This is a game that if you are a fan of the brawler/beatem-up genre then you NEED to have this game in your collection and theres simply no excuse not to play this. COP THIS GAME RIGHT NOW as it is KASANOVA APPROVED!!

I bought a Nintendo switch for these types of games. Recently got Ninja Saviors
Easily the best Beat Em Up of all time; the gameplay is as good as it gets for the genre.
You kno what blows my mind about this game? *whispers* if you do a 360 motion on the joystick then hit the sp button with Norris you do a shutiken spin grapple!!! hardly anyone talks about the “secret moves” you can execute O_O that was just one of em gal has a rising knee and a round house that has some range n ricardo has a double uppercut n there are more but gl finding those cool review bro!!!

Another thing you might not notice immediately is when you parry an attack it restores your SP meter immediately, so while it doesn't stun the enemy that's hitting you, it does give you that chance to get everyone away from you for a second
I just love how many references of retro games in this. Nearly every character in this game is a reference or more than one reference of characters from Capcom, SNK, Sega, and more. I just bursted out laughing hard when i saw the cat general doing the m bison slide and it is easily punishable by neutral jumping. Not to mention I really didn't expect someone put SF3 parry into a beat em up game and it works so well. The art style also remind me of retro handhelds like Gameboy Color and Neo Geo Pocket Color. Playing this on Switch Lite really gives me a massive throwback feeling.
I'm lucky to parry 1/10 of the attacks I try to parry, it works when it wants to.
@@UrdnotWrex88 when facing tons of enemies parry usually randomly works by simply walking forward and refilled sp meter instantly. For boss battle though dodge roll is always a far safer escape.
This and Streets of Rage Remake and OpenBOR are my favs

Played this game quite a bit on PC and really enjoyed it. Can’t wait to get it on Switch. I love the art, the soundtrack, and I wish more beat em ups had a combat system as complex as this game.(Even if I’m not the best at it. lol)
Gal is my main. Love her so much.
My one complaint is that the game can be brutally difficult at times, which normally wouldn’t be too big of a problem for me, but there are a good number of cool unlockables that require you to beat the game with one life or continue, or beat Score/Time Attack with S rank(God help me) and that frustrates the hell out of the completionist in me. T^T

@@MekelKasanova As a big "Beat Em Up" fan, I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was well worth the purchase. I played it by myself, then with friends. Both times were awesome 👍 I liked it so much that I pulled out the Projector and Sound Bar and turned the house into an Arcade lol. I am a huge fan of the combo system, the alternative paths & unlockables for replay value and the music is amazing. My adrenaline gets pumping whenever I hear it. I am thankful that we have been getting more games of this genre in our current time.
I just saw this game in the Xbox store and remembered hearing about it like a year ago and how great it is but unfortunately wasn't available on consoles. Definitely picking it up for the weekend.

@@MekelKasanova no doubt been playing now for like an hour and your right the fighting system has some fun combos to it really looking forward to playing more.
This game kicked my ass. I can only beat it on easy mode lol. But I still love it. Fortunately my kids like games like this so I have them for couch co-op.
Now make a sequel.

Damn it, I was gonna buy it the last time I saw it on discount but went with Scott Pilgrim which is decent but quite inferior to this. I'll definitely get it next time I see it. Thanks for the review mate, I'll sub to see more of your reviews on beat' em ups and fighting games.

I definitely think the weapons like the pipe and the knife are meant to be similar to Streets of Rage and I love that
Got River City Girls, Streets of Rage 4, the Takeover and now this one from a sale. Damn it rocks! My only complaint (aside from no online) is that it’s so brutally hard! This game is go hard or go home!
Would you recommend River City Girl over other River City series for switch?

Great review, man! In my opinion, Fight'N Rage is not just the best beat 'em and up on the Switch, it is the best game on the system, period. There's no loading, no filler and no clumsy controls... the game is indeed a masterpiece, especially when played on the go. The fun factor is INSANE!

Man, I'm very much on the fence. THe issue is that so many recent Beat Em Ups, especially River City Girls, are SO REPETITIVE. How do you feel about this game? Kill some guys, go to next screen, kill more, repeat, kill boss? I'd like to play something more along the lines of Shank, Shank 2 and Mother Russia Bleeds. Those games was fun as heck.
It really isn't that repetitive. Enemies all have unique strength and weakness like SoR so you will need to figure out strategies to get through the game. For example certain enemies can anti air you perfectly while others have super armor and only weak to throw attacks so you want to change playstyle upon running into different enemies. The game also has below average room of mistakes so it is very likely your initial playthrough would be not very successful and it will take 2-3 playthroughs just to reach one of many endings. (Unlimited continue really doesn't help much in the last level and you never want to play through it with only 3 lifes.)
@@abc2390986 That is awesome info. What I was looking for. Too many games lately are way too easy, hold your hand, and some even let you revive over and over without penalty. Whatever happened to challenging but fair? I'll give this game a shot based on your addition.
@@MekelKasanova Well, I just bought it and played for several hours and it's pretty darn repetitive to me, anyway. Clear a room, fight a boss, clear a room, fight an ANNOYING ass boss who attacks like Vega from Street fighter, fight some super annoying Dobermans, clear a room, etc... I don't see any new moves to get, new skills, etc... Am I missing something? Does it become a different experience later on? One attack button for the whole game?
@@MekelKasanova Well maybe I'm jumping the gun a bit. A review I'm reading says that new moves do open up. I guess I'll need to be more patient for now and revise my thought later. Still strange that they don't mention anything like this in the game yet. Would kinda turn some people off perhaps like this.
@@fatherfintanstack8810 each of the three characters has a secret move and i don't think it needs to be unlocked. Also you are actually really good at this genre if yoy clear the game by button mashing. For most people like us we have to take every opportunities to score high points and avoid taking damage, just to stack up a few more extra lives and make the end game a bit easier.
Do you need to find out all the attack moves the game has to offer by yourself or can you learn them in training mode?

Was nice to see a review from someone who really dug into the depth of the combat- I hated seeing reviews where the reviewer just stuck to the most basic combos and specials, even when the opinion ended up positive. If you don't really sink your teeth into the combat depth, you're missing the game's best feature. As someone else who grew up playing brawlers, I have no problem calling this one the best I've played.
Do you learn these hidden moves in the training mode or do you have to find them out yourself?
@@EazzyRays Training mode demonstrates a lot that other reviewers seemed to miss, but there are a few additional hidden moves you'll have to do some forum or youtube digging for.

I have no idea why this game did not get the recognition it deserves back in the days.
The combat system some of the best I have ever experienced in a beat'em up.
The only problem is the sort of over sexualized character design preventing it from going mainstream.

Should've know you were over-hyping this when you said the dev was a friend of yours. But I still bought. Even in easy it's way too difficult like I've seen mentioned a lot. And the music isn't that great. There's not even separate boss music! Not even in the same league as SOR 2 music wise. It could be close to it game play wise if it wasn't so difficult. Can't select the number fp lives you start with, can't continue where you died (even on easy mode), and can't select a different character when continuing. I'd give it a 6.5/10. I hope it gets updated with some tweaks but it's been out a while so I'm not holding my breath. Could use many quality of life improvements too.

I found this game to be super repetitive and the enemy AI is even worse than Streets of Rage 3 for being cheap.

It is NOT THAT GOOD. It is absolutely unfair if you play it alone. MP is WOWzers but SP is horrendous trash. You can't hit a few bosses properly with Ricardo. Disgusting! He is tooo slow. So you need 2 others to join. Poorly designed. Beside that the game is a ton of fun. I deleted it and will reload it when friends gather.. lol
