We've been making Punching Weights for six goddamn years, so I decided to put together a mega-video of all the times we covered Nintendo peripheral doodads. I hope it'll help you study, sleep, or relive the weird, ambitious and unnecessary!
Hey Uncle Derek, did you know that there is a thing you can use that N64 Mouse for that you didn´t cover already? There is a ScummVM port to N64 that allows you to play a few PC Point & Click Adventures on real N64 Hardware via a Everdrive and it supports the N64 Mouse. If that isn´t a dumb, unnecessary way of playing such games, I don´t know what is.
42:21 “but to be fair the e-Reader is a way dumber method, so that’s a point in my book” Derek just perfectly described this channel in a single sentence. I love it
I love that you turned the HVGN into a career for yourself, and made your channel your own, rather than a spinoff of another fellow on YT lol. One of my favorite channels.

Yo, Derek, I can't tell you how inspirational your long-form deep-dive videos into the obscurity of video gaming have been over the years! I am still plugging away at my Waterworld focused TH-cam channel and I just got to 1000 subs! Thank you so much for your motivation, it's keeps me going too!

Ah the movie, I was thinking of SeaWorld and frowning at the idea of some sort of super supporter of sad and stressed out animals totally unfit for a life in captivity as entertainment. But, hopefully you're aware that your niche is alot more limited than the subject of gaming. Which might sound like a negative thing at first but yeah hang on, I think it's inevitable to be disappointed if you're expecting similar numbers and never getting there but if you look at it realistically I would probably guess that 1000 subs are already pretty darn successful considering it's such a limited topic. Like among other waterworld channels you're probably among the biggest, which I would consider a good thing. So if that's your thing you might already have succeeded, unless there indeed are much bigger waterworld channels to fairly compare with. And if you ever want to expand the scope of the channel I think it's likely to grow much faster than when starting out because with 1000 subs the ball is in motion so your videos might actually show up to people who then have the choice to decide if they like it. So I think the hardest bump of being close to invisible is already conquered.

I was finally directed to this video. Such an amazing bit of history. I saw the section on Pacman Vs. I never got to play it before it arrived on the Nintendo Switch. I had a lot of fun with it around 3 years ago, at a Christmas Party with cousins of mine. We used the main switch for the TV and the Ghosts, and I also had a Switch Lite for the person who played Pac-man. It worked perfectly, and yeah, a great party game. At the time, it was played between sessions of Mario Kart 8 DX and Smash Ultimate. I was staying Pacman Themed, when I could, so I also played Pacman in Smash then. I'm also one of the lucky ones to get Phantasy Star Online Episode 1 and 2 Plus, and managed to actually snag it for the original Retail price when I found it. Take note, I was looking for it for years until I found the opportune seller to get my copy. Near perfect condition, the only wear and tear is that the manual isn't completely crisp, so it's been used a little bit. But yeah, all the offline GBA stuff is with it, and I have it so it can fully run online On the Wii (with Backwards compatibility) and using the WiFI connection. Awesome!!! Basically, it's the cheapest and most effective way to play the best console version of PSO with full broadband WiFI online support and in Progressive Scan.
This was great background noise as I did things around the house and office and it allowed me to fill in some gaps I missed in your content, would love to see more of these mashups!

In the e-reader video you mention Hamtaro, I used to watch that show religiously when I was 12. You made me remember something from my childhood that I loved but had since forgotten, and it probably would have stayed forgotten if not for you. Thank you. Now I got what I remember of the song stuck in my head and I'm a little frustrated by that.
I love hearing Derek say lines like "Oh you thought that was dumb :D, well we are doing something even more dumb!! :D" He leaves no stone unturned with the level of research, testing and depth that it is both informative and hilarious! Sooooooo fun to watch!!! :D
To say WWF No Mercy's mod scene is dedicated is an understatement. The fact that I'm able to play a wrestling game on the N64 in 2022 with a fully updated roster of wrestlers from multiple major companies, with updated ring attire from less than a month ago is insane.
I can't praise _Ring Fit_ enough. At no point does it shame the player or speak inconsiderately. The first time I picked it up, I filled in a questionnaire (so it could guess what my level of endurance was). It *horrifically overestimated* how capable I was (after 15 minutes, my BPM was, like, 178, and I was puking up my fruit cordial). It took me about four days to recover, and when I turned it on again, the first thing it said was to the effect of "Yo, you looked like you were having trouble back there, and it took you a while to come back. But you _did_ come back, and that's awesome! How about we lower your difficulty?" Thanks, _Ring Fit._ I'm sorry I'm too chufty for you, but we just met, and I appreciate the consideration you're willing to put in. Get _Ring Fit._ It's really fun, and I've had so much more fun with it than the _Wii Fit_ series ever gave me. I'm *still* fat and I haven't picked up my Ring Con in months, but that's because my head is more broken than my body, and the early sunset of Winter screws me up hard.
Oh. It also incentivises working in your spare time. The Ring Con can detect when you're just fiddling with it without the game. If you do reps with it while, like, watching the TV or something, it gives you coins that you can either give to yourself, or give to a friend as a form of encouragement. And on that note, the controller feels really good to use. It feels really sturdy. You're _not_ going to tear it apart, or smash your fingers together. This is one of the times where I would specifically discourage buying third-party shit (if unofficial Ring Cons exist).
The gba GameCube link cable was the greatest thing of all time the amount of joy I got experimenting with different games to see if something happened, I felt like an archeologist lmao
On behalf of the Boktai community, thanks for talking about the interaction between Lunar Knights and the Boktai games (and also the one between Boktai and MMBN5DS!)
58:30 In Metroid Fusion Samus suit goes through a total of 4 changes. The yellow/orange is her final "Omega Suit" she gets in the climatic battle with the Omega Metroid. The yellow/blue is one of her beginning suits.
The jumper pack /terminator pack is because the N64 used a ram technology called 'rambus' which at the time before ddr came out, was faster that sdr. One of the drawbacks of this was that rambus unlike other computer ram technologies needed 'all' slots to either have ram, or a blank 'terminator module' that kept the electrical ring intact. the terminator pack is simply used to keep the electronic signal ring intact for the rambus ram slot. This also drove up the cost of the n64 compared to the other consoles and contributed to the decline of nintendo. Just like intel, they were caught by rambus's hype and were bit by it.
2:51:40 I was told that what you were seeing was a early version of dynamic resolution scaling that capcom used to compress the textures on the fly in order to maintain a specific amount of used / free vram. Really cool.
Sitting here minding my own business, passively enjoying to the video when 11:05 hits and suddenly a wild Dolphin Park theme appears and I get curb stomped by a massive wave of nostalgia. Wave Race doesn't get enough love imo.

An interview with one of the DK64 devs reveals that the game *was* made as a tech demo for the Expansion Pak! While both the "DK64 required the Expansion Pak" part and the "DK64 had a game-breaking bug noticed late in development" part are both true, the idea that the two facts were in any way related to one another was a mass-self-gaslight on our collective part!
This is false. DK64 never had the memory leak bug. Don't you think that after all of these years of people speed running the game, looking at every tiny little imperfection in detail under a microscope, they would find the glitch? DK64 used The extra RAM for the dynamic lighting, and was one of the first games of the N64 library to use dynamic lighting. I don't blame you for believing this myth, as it is a extremely common misconception, but it is false nonetheless.
Would have been nice if the patreon crawl, might as well just watch the Playlist since nothing is edited. Just minor criticism, prob just didn't think about it because I think this is the first compilation on your channel. Love the vids keep em up
I believe the Episode 1 Racer dual controller cheat had player 1 use slots 1 & 3 so that a second player could use slots 2 & 4 - this way the basic game inputs for multiplayer wouldn't need to be changed on the basis of of a single cheat code.

I've watched this video in it's entirety TWICE .......and if you think I'll watch another one of these 4+hr long videos multiple times...you'd be correct!!!
@@pentexsucks43 I know he wasn't saying something incorrect, I was just trying to point out the sheer scale of the video. 30 may be more than 20, but just saying more than 20 doesn't convey the scale of 30. There is a whole 22 minutes unaccounted for when you simply say more than 3.5. That's almost the entire runtime of a lot of TV shows. It's not exactly insignificant.
The GBA Halo Light is hands down my top #1 Nintendo Peripheral. Its elegant, easy to install the front light screen, when you pair it with a battery pack, it basically turned it into a GBA SP. Ill never forget buying my Halo Light from EB games in the mall, installing it on the kitchen table, and playing Metroid Zero Mission and Metroid Fusion all night long in bed with the lights out. I could finally sneak in my game time when its supposed to be my bedtime! Haha
I remember when the e-reader first came out and I was in love with it. The concept of collecting special pokemon cards and swiping them for games seemed like so much fun for me as a child. It was like having your own pokedex or digivice(in particular season 3's). I really wish it had been more popular but I feel like the concept is similar to gatcha games. You have to pay/collect more and more to get more short bits of content. In the west that can come off as especially annoying. I kinda wonder if I have more of a gambler's mentality because I enjoy that aspect so much... lmao

As I am getting ready to start the Gathering and Crafting grind in Final Fantasy XIV, this is the kind of video I crave. Let's go.
You know what I love about Derek and Grace? You can never predict the subject of the next video. The king and queen of random Niche!
Also, SH2 historical society is my favourite episode. Another horror game deep dive follow up one day? 😀👌
we those when we can but we probably won't make one for a bit. Did you see the one we did on RE8's beneviento section?
@@StopSkeletonsFromFighting oh F*** I forgot about that one. That was a good one. I'll consider that the follow up 😄.
Love your content, can't wait to see what random stuff you'll do next 👌👍
Virtual Boy was a thing...I think it was just a series of flashing red lights...that might have been tennis or something. It ended up being $29.99 at Toys R Us.
Brilliant, Daddy Derek! I love it! I'm gonna end up marathoning these just like I do the seasons of AVGN.
Thank you for this Uncle Derek, you should make a playlist/more long compilations. I love sleeping to these kinds of videos!
Weird, from my perspective, that you think the e-reader was forgotten! It and its inattainability was and still is warping my world slightly. Oh well. :)
(i live in europe. i still have plenty of cards. no reader was sold here)
I have watched these videos so many times I'm really glad you made this. I can recite some of them and it's really great to listen and laugh to when I'm working in the house. Your videos always make me smile
I resisted watching any of your videos because I hated the channel names, but you have so many topics I'm interested in so I've started watching your videos. You got me.
Watched this bit by bit over the course of a week. You really make great content, thank you
I love the mix of Jumping Flash and Tomba music. Didn't expect to get nostalgic like that
This is freaking awesome. Right up my alley. I love this channel!
I loooove these long ass videos. But I can’t watch it in one sitting, been watching this for 2 days now lol.
How about we lower your difficulty?"
Thanks, _Ring Fit._ I'm sorry I'm too chufty for you, but we just met, and I appreciate the consideration you're willing to put in.
This video is actually 6:54 *SHORT* of 4 hours.
FALSE ADVERTISING!!
JK, keep up the great work, Love you guys
On behalf of the Boktai community, thanks for talking about the interaction between Lunar Knights and the Boktai games (and also the one between Boktai and MMBN5DS!)
Yay! Now I can put u guys on in the background while I do housework ❤️
Your videos are saving me at work. Pouring concrete in 100 degree weather with high humidity. Needed something to take my head somewhere else. Thanks

In Metroid Fusion Samus suit goes through a total of 4 changes. The yellow/orange is her final "Omega Suit" she gets in the climatic battle with the Omega Metroid. The
yellow/blue is one of her beginning suits.
Hey Derek! It's me Derek! And this is Stop Dereks From Fighting!
Now this is a video I'll be using for bg work noise. Thanks a bunch for making it Uncle Derek! 🙏
29:00
I've been working on a camera accessory video, and I can't believe I almost missed Face Training. Thanks, Uncle Derek!
2:51:40 I was told that what you were seeing was a early version of dynamic resolution scaling that capcom used to compress the textures on the fly in order to maintain a specific amount of used / free vram. Really cool.
Well this might just be the greatest way to find out about a new channel!
4 hours of Derek and Grace... Christmas came early. ^_^
Ooh I always love leaving these mega compilations on whilst working or procrastinating. Thanks for your hard work Derek and Grace! :)
The e-reader is just the irl version of that among us task
........LOL
Sitting here minding my own business, passively enjoying to the video when 11:05 hits and suddenly a wild Dolphin Park theme appears and I get curb stomped by a massive wave of nostalgia. Wave Race doesn't get enough love imo.
Awesome
Video watched it all - have not seen an episode of your stuff since you were called happy video game nerd had no idea you had changed the name of your channel - now I Have years of your video to watch - uncle derek I have missed you all these years 😁
An interview with one of the DK64 devs reveals that the game *was* made as a tech demo for the Expansion Pak!
Uncle Derek coming at us with compilations, perfect for background music on cleaning day
I use TH-cam as background noise to help me sleep and waking up to the part on link cable was a pleasant experience.
Oh NOW we're talking. I need that long form, high octane Uncle D
Dude, thumbs up just for making 4 hours of actually good content, hats off bud. 👌
Would have been nice if the patreon crawl, might as well just watch the Playlist since nothing is edited. Just minor criticism, prob just didn't think about it because I think this is the first compilation on your channel. Love the vids keep em up
59:32 Sick foreshadowing, Dereck.
I believe the Episode 1 Racer dual controller cheat had player 1 use slots 1 & 3 so that a second player could use slots 2 & 4 - this way the basic game inputs for multiplayer wouldn't need to be changed on the basis of of a single cheat code.
I always turn on TH-cam and put my ear buds in and watch somethin to fall asleep as to not wake up my baby daughter and I've found tonites video to fall asleep to.
I always use long form content to get me to nap lol, just be careful what you watch it influences your dreams! 😂
20:30 "The North American Battle Network games have never been re-released... YET"
He posted that video THREE YEARS AGO and this statement is still true as 2021 is ending. My suffering is immense.
I've watched this video in it's entirety TWICE .......and if you think I'll watch another one of these 4+hr long videos multiple times...you'd be correct!!!
Derek, these controllers are quite amazing. For over 3.5 hours and many viewers, it will be very awesome.
3.88 hours actually. Almost 4.
@@parrot998 yeah, 3.88 hours, he said "over 3.5" same outcome.
I love that you involve your wife in these videos. You can feel the love
"Peter Jackson's King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie" is such a great game. It deserves way more attention than it recieves.
They may be weird but they are some of the most memorable and innovative parts of my childhood.
Playing this on repeat indefinitely. Pump that algorithm for Uncle D
You can see him like open up to the channel and his energy it's great
Love these long compilations! Need more of them!
Damn, I'm literally on a 3 hour trip, thank you !!
Let's hope you're not driving xD
Enjoy!
@@DiestroCorleone don't worry sir!
Now this is what I sub for
Merry Christmas Derek and have a happy new year.
Thank you for doing this retrospective it is awesome and I love it and shows me all of the items I could never afford to buy
Haha
I've started watching this video to fall asleep to, but it's kept me up for too long instead.
I kinda wonder if I have more of a gambler's mentality because I enjoy that aspect so much... lmao
I love that mother 2/earthbound poster behind you, definitely one game i wouldn't mind an updated remake of
Really great video. Loved re-visiting the chainsaw controllers. I always wanted one so bad lol
The only Uncle we're all excited to see this holiday season.
