The team with the better regular season record plays the first 2 and last 2 at their home ballpark. During the 2020 COVID-affected season, playoff games were played at neutral sites.

In the mlb playoffs the team that had the better regular season in the standings (table) will have the home field advantage - 4 games at home. A neutral location is never used in baseball unlike the Super Bowl. It’s currently a 2-3-2 format for a seven game series. Higher seed or better reg season record will play first 2 at home, then 3 away then final 2 at home if necessary.

It's worth noting that the rules were different at the time of this video: in 2 of the 3 series Boston played in, the team with the worse regular season record actually had home-field advantage.
In the LDS the wild card team played the division winner from another division with the best record. But the division winner always had home-field advantage. So Boston were 98-64 and the Angels were 92-70 in the regular season, but the Angels had home field advantage in the ALDS because they were division winners while Boston were the wild card.
And the World Series home-field advantage was determined by the league that won the All Star game. Boston were 98-64 and the Cardinals were 105-67 in the regular season, but the AL won the All Star game so Boston had home-field advantage.
(Also, a neutral location was used for the World Series in 2020: The Tampa Bay Rays played the Los Angeles Dodgers in the Texas Rangers' stadium. But that's quite unusual, prompted by COVID.)

This ALCS series is the greatest baseball story there is. The Sox do the impossible against their biggest and most hated rivals after nearly a century of terrible losses and heartbreak steming from the terrible trade of Babe Ruth to help fund a musical in Boston by the owner. To comeback, on a 3-0 deficit in 4 nights back to back...it's just beautiful and it couldn't have happened to a more well deserving team

  • @awelch31

I dunno if you could react to this, but ESPN has a documentary series called 30 for 30. One of the best ones is called “Four Days in October”. It’s all about the comeback. That game you just saw and the 3 afterwards. It’s amazing, and David Ortez goes on to become an absolute legend during that series. Much more heroics follow. Again, probably not something to react to, but if you ever come across it, it’s definitely worth a watch

Boston is a sports town. How they love the Red Sox is an example in America of the love for local soccer teams in Europe. I lived it watching my Grandfather in 1967 (I was six) living and dying wit the Sawx. Then I did the same - and I waited until this comeback - at age 40+, in 2003, to finally see the dream happen.

For sure. Some players love playing for the Red Sox, because the stands are always full and the fans are about as passionate as it gets, but there’s a really obvious downside that comes with having that bright spotlight whenever things suck. Those reporters were pretty even-keeled compared to the mood of a lot of the fans based on the way the first three games had gone.
Other teams, other towns, baseball teams fly more under the radar unless/until they happen to get good and make a postseason run.

"The Steal" is one of the most important moments in Boston sports history, and Roberts spinning out of the slide into home still gets me hyped up today. I was a kid, and after watching Boone's home run in the 2003 ALCS I'll never forget my parents telling me that I was now officially a Red Sox fan. The Impossible Dream of '67, the '75 game 7 loss, Bucky Dent in '78, Buckner's error in '86, and then Boone. That heartbreak was what it meant to be a Sox fan. We've been spoiled since, but this legendary comeback will always be impossible to top. Thanks for covering it, cool to see reactions from an outsider perspective.

I remember watching the Red Sox lose in 2003 with my dad who had grown up in New England, watching the Sox lose every year. After the Aaron Boone homerun, he shut the TV off and said to me "welcome to my nightmare." Then watching the comeback in 2004 was such a good moment for us. This is a core memory of my childhood, and I legitimately have to hold back tears anytime I watch something about the 2004 playoffs. Thanks for reacting to this video, and keep on watching.

It was so mystifying that rumors circulated that Frazee needed the money to finance a play on Broadway (commonly held to be No, No Nanette, but more likely a predecessor play called My Lady Friends).

In the playoff 7 game series, the team with a better record gets home field advantage with 4 games at home, 3 on the road. Example, in this series, the Yankees were the higher seeded team. Games 1 and 2 were played in NY. 3,4, and 5 in Boston. 6 and 7 in NY. Up until 2017 the World Series home field advantage was determined by which league won the all star game, now it is also the team with the better record.

I still remember the Sox's 2nd baseman hitting a homerun off the right field foul pole in Yankee stadium... when it clanged against it, I said out loud "that's the death knell for the Yankees..." A coworker from New York couldn't understand the emotional investment by the city of Boston: "it's not even a world series." I replied "New York is the greatest franchise in the history of baseball, and has stood in our way; sure, a world series is fine, but beating New York is EVERYTHING."

Good call on the Babe Ruth connection Damo! The long Boston World Series drought was often referred to as “The Curse of the Bambino” as the superstitious among us believed Ruth leaving was the cause for the lack of success haha
That clutch steal in the bottom of the ninth was made by current Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts.
Team with the better regular season record gets home field advantage. They’ll be the team that hosts game seven if it gets there. There was a period of time where whichever league won the mid-season All Star Game would have their representative get home field advantage. Thankfully that is no longer the case.

Pitches are hard to identify sometimes--even harder if you're sitting in the stands. The easiest way of telling them apart is thinking about them in several groups and then relying on the radar gun:
Group #1 Fastballs (Highest velocity) include 4-seam which doesn't move as much as well as the 2-seam, sinker and cut fastball/cutter which all make the fastball run in a certain direction. Mariano Rivera was known for his killer cutter.
Group #2 Changeup & Splitter (roughly 10 mph slower), downward movement
Group #3 Breaking Balls (roughly 15 mph slower), includes slider, curveball, slurve, sweeper. Sliders and sweepers normally move laterally away from the pitcher's arm side while curveballs often have a 12-6 motion (like on a clock) with an exaggerated drop.
Chaos group: Knuckleballs and eephus. Tim Wakefield was on the 03/04 Sox and had a legendary knuckleball.
Also you probably won't be able to show these, but there are some great baseball movies out there, especially Bull Durham and Moneyball (97 and 94 on Rotten Tomatoes).

Very good knowledge about Babe Ruth!
You were correct only the "trade" was simply the Yankees giving the Red Sox $$ for Babe.
The Red Sox owner was in some financial trouble after WW1 hurt ticket sales and his investments in New York Theatre productions were failing.
The Red Sox sold Babe to the Yankees for 100k. A huge sum back then but still a paltry amount for the greatest player ever.

If you want to see what HOF "Big Papi" can really do, go see what he did in the 2013 postseason.. he was an absolute monster. So much so, that by the time the World Series rolled around, they started walking him automatically just to avoid him. His batting average during the World Series that year was .688 with a .760 on base average... the 2 highest averages in World Series history. 2004 got him noticed, 2013 got him a plaque in the Hall of Fame.

To understand the angst you need to go back to game 6 of the 1986 World Series (against another New York Team, the Mets) where near the end of the game (they only needed one out and it was done) the Sox seemed to have already won . Cases of champagne were delivered to the Red Soxs locker room, the scoreboard gave congratulations to the team for their first championship since 1918 only to have it fall apart when the Sox's first baseman let a routine ground ball pass between his legs (look up Bill Buckner) letting the Mets win, which lead to a game 7. At that point the team seemed cursed.

Kinda random fact about Mariano Rivera but he was the last player to ever wear the number 42. 42 was Jackie Robinsons number and was retired league wide in 1997. Players who already were wearing 42 were allowed to keep wearing it, so when he retired in 2013 that was the final time someone wore 42.

Mariano Rivera is THEE GREATEST CLOSER of all time, and its not even close. One of the most dominant pitchers to ever take the mound.. and he did it with 1 pitch.. he just threw his cutter.. and he could paint the black of home plate with it every time he threw it.. he was absolutely unreal.. the team with the better regular season record get 4 games at home if the series go 7 games.. so the better team gets first 2 games at home, then the other team gets 3 at home (if the series goes more than 4 games). Then the better team gets the last 2 at home if needed

Funny you should ask "was there a player who brought them back?"
Because as much as the easy answer is David Oriz. He certainly had the biggest impact in the biggest moments. The real thing that makes this comeback so cool is that in baseball more than any other major sport I can think of, one man can not carry a team. No matter how good you are you only bat when your turn in the lineup comes and you only field when the ball is hit to you. You cant really force the issue and make sure your star player is constantly having chances to impact the game.
When something amazing like this happens it is because almost everyone on the roster, from your best hitter to the last pitcher left in your bullpen, had a chance to make a difference and did their job. This series was a true team comeback. Even if Papi (deservedly so) gets the lions share of the credit.

I'm not sure if it has been mentioned, but in best of 7 playoff series (NBA, NHL, MLB), they seed the teams based on their regular season records, and the higher seeds in each round gets the home advantage (4 games at home, 3 away). They usually do one of two formats: NBA & NHL gives the higher seed games 1,2,5, and 7 at home, and the lower seed gets games 3,4,and 6 at home. MLB typically gives the higher seeds games 1,2,6,and 7 at home, and the lower seed gets games 3,4,and 5 at home.

Yes Babe Ruth was on the Red Sox in 1918.. and he was their best pitcher (they had only started playing him in the outfield a few days a week when he wasn't pitching).. He set a pitching record he held for longer than he held both of his home run records during the 1918 World Series (most consecutive innings pitched without allowing a run)
He went to the Yankees after the 1919 season, and he wasn't the only one.. Most of the stars of the 1918 Red Sox ended up playing for the Yankees by 1922! Yankees won their first World Series in 1923.

Baseball has a different energy than any other sport, because it’s the player, a individual goes into a pressure cooker, the playoffs, the pitchers can’t throw strikes and the hitters are trying to hit home runs and they strike out and the defense makes errors and the manager panics and pulls pitchers, but the combination of all, makes it baseball.

Wow you guys are learning fast and helping many to stay interested and learn more about sports.
The Curse of the Bambino was a superstitious sports curse in Major League Baseball (MLB) derived from the 86-year championship drought of the Boston Red Sox between 1918 and 2004. The superstition was named after Babe Ruth, known as "The Bambino", who played for the Red Sox until he was sold to the New York Yankees in 1920.
Now for my favorite player because damnit the man is just fun. You have to smile when you see him, Big Papi. I am not even a Boston Red Sox fan, but Big Papi is just a joy to see. Here is a link to highlights on him th-cam.com/video/ILPz_49cs3w/w-d-xo.html.
Since the expansion to best-of-seven, are always played in a 2-3-2 format: Games 1, 2, 6, and 7 are played in the stadium of the team that has home field advantage, and Games 3, 4, and 5 are played in the stadium of the team that does not. The series concludes when one team records its fourth win.

A little context if you haven't seen this before: prior to 1969, there were no "playoffs" in Major League Baseball. Before that, the teams with the best regular season record in each league (National and American) just advanced to the World Series. From 1969-1993, each league had one playoff series before the World Series, between the winners of each league's Eastern and Western divisions.
Since both the Yankees and Red Sox have always been in the same league and division, that means the first time it was even *possible* for them to play each other in the postseason was 1995 (1994 was cancelled by a player's strike). So when they said 1999 was the first time these two ever met in the postseason... Yes, that's true, but it was also impossible until only four years earlier.
Also, since I grew up a Pittsburgh fan, and they hadn't done much of note since I was too young to care, this was really the first time I'd rooted for a baseball team (because everyone who isn't a Yankees fan hates the Yankees) and, man, that was a magical four days.

In the playoffs teams don’t play at neutral venues, the way home field is decided by which team had the higher seeding entering the playoffs (who had more wins). The scheduling in a 7 game series goes games 1-2 at the better team’s field, then 3 games at the other team’s place, then the final 2 games at the better team’s field. You can also tell which team is on the road, and which is at home by the uniforms they’re wearing. Home teams typically wear white jerseys and pants, and the road team typically wears grey jerseys and pants (barring alternate jerseys). Most teams have both of these, but some also wear alternates that are usually team colors, but almost always, at least one team will wear the common white or grey uniforms

Each team gets 3 games at their home stadium if the series goes at least 6 games long. If there is a 7th game, that game is played in the stadium of the team with the higher division standing.
So if the Yankees were the division Champs, and the Red Sox took 2nd place in that division, then game 7 is played in New York.

In MLB, 7-game series like this have the first and last 2 games played at the home of the higher seeded team and the middle 3 at the home of the lower seeded team (2-3-2). They also have 5-game series in the second round with the first 2 and last games at the higher seeded team's home and games 3 and 4 at the lower seeded team's home (2-2-1). There is a new first round format starting last year where it's 3 games all at the higher seeded team's home. Also, the World Series is the same 7 game format from before but home-field advantage goes to the team with the bettet regular season record regardless of league seed.
Additionally, the NBA and NHL have all 7-game series with a 2-2-1-1-1 format.

  • @scottstewart5784

The team with higher seeding gets 4 of the 7 games at home until he World Series, which 4-3 advantage used to be decided by which league won the all star game. Not sure how now - maybe rotate. And baseball, with each stadium dimensions being unique, is more apt to produce a home field advantage than sports with uniform dimensions.

  • @WDS66
    @WDS66 ปีที่แล้ว

To answer your question about where the games are played. Regular season schedule determines seeding in the playoff bracket. Upper seeds get "home field". There is some weirdness early rounds because a division winner gets home field over a wild card entry even if the wild card had a better record. Because division winners get higher seeds. Home field advantage in a 7 game series goes 2 games at home. 3 games away. Last 2 games home for a 4-3 advantage. In 2004 home field was stupidly determined by the winning team in the all star game that happens mid season. That rule has thankfully gone away. Before that stupid rule it alternated each year between the two leagues. World series home field now goes to the team in the series that had the better record in the regular season.
