That was a great answer about sharpening to a 17° edge, and if it rolls, throw a 20° edge over it. I've done this before with great results. It's "almost" like the slight convex you get when using stones...

That corkscrew has quite a bit of uses other that corks. I have used it to pull O-rings, snap rings, the hook shape for pulling knots out...and several other uses. Also a good spot for the small screwdriver
Hey DCA, I really want to start designing knives. I know you've done it before so I was wondering if you can talk a little bit about that process. (Maybe you can show us some more of your designs.) Thank you and have a nice day!
When I started scouting a few years ago, I went for the swiss field master. I am now working on my eagle project and currently carry terminus xr and watched DCA and Blade HQ for about a couple years now. I am slowly making my small knife collection doing a "knife of the month". Keep it up
For DCA, boy scout knives is a more complex discussion. As an adult leader, I carry a Victorinox swiss tool on my belt and a spyderco tenacious in my pocket. I also recommend Leatherman waves and Ontario rats for leaders. For boys, recommend the Victorinox tinker or hiker. For boys I also recommend 420hc lock back knives by Buck. Easy to sharpen and the lock back mechanism is easy for kids to use.
I just got a Farmer X with black Alox for my son’s 9th birthday coming up in a few days. He is also in Cub Scouts. He already has a Spiderco Dragonfly and a SOG Powerpint multi-tool.
Mike Carr I hope that was sarcasm😆 Mora's are fine for what they are a cheap disposable knife with a descent blade steel trust me you could do far worst. And what parent can afford to get there kid a Benchmade for boy scouts Buck maybe but Benchmade🤷♂️. You obviously don't have kids because there would be nothing like your child losing a 200 to 300 dollars knife in the woods and having to go out and replace it after listening to hours of whining and crying 🤦♂️

I recently purchased one of the Benchmade knives in d2 that DCA showed in this video. It is a great EDC knife. I do not front flip it much because I just cannot get the hang of it, holds it edge great! For me EDC means opening packages and food prep. you will be well served by this knife/
Over the years I have used various stones, and ceramic rods to sharpen knives. But the best sharpening system I've ever seen is on the Smith's tri-hone. The fine stone on the kit will sharpen D-2 or any other steel to a sharpness that you could shave with. Really and truly sharp, and the D-2 will hold that edge quite well.
Thanks for your recommendations DCA, I’ll definitely be looking into that ranger grip 78 and that lionsteel b35, I’ll also give the corkscrew another chance as I hate untying knots lol.
The scandi grind on mora knives is pretty easy to sharpen imo, easier than a traditionnal V-edge ! Just lay it flat on a stone and go for it :) sharpened a ton of em without any trouble when I discovered knives and sharpening. Wishing you luck in your endeavours
@@ramonade_knives if you're really used to sharpening more typical grinds it can be tough to adjust but it's much easier in my opinion to feel the angle since the contact patch is larger

Here's a question for a future KnifeAQ. I sometimes work in an area where there is a blade length restriction of 2" and below. I am not a big fan of carrying automatics, but I appreciate what some of the California legal auto options offer - A substantial handle and blade but without exceeding the 2" limit. For example, the Pro-Tech Halfbreed and Hogue Microswitch come to mind. These are more durable and comfortable to hold than say a Spyderco Ladybug or SAK. My question to you is, "Are there any non-automatic folders with a 2" blade that can stand up to heavier EDC tasks?" A pocket clip is a plus.
Another good recommendation for the Boy Scout pocketknife is the Fieldmaster. Only $38 at KC. But… I do agree with DCA about the corkscrew and would go with Huntsman. It’s the same as the Fieldmaster but the 3D Phillips driver is swapped for a corkscrew. Many handle colors available too. As a bonus, you can store a micro screwdriver or a small fire steel in the corkscrew itself. You’ll loose the three dimensional Phillips but the can opener works as a 2D Phillips driver.
When I was in boy scouts oh so many years ago, I carried a generic swiss army knife, a folding knife with a leather sheath, and in my backpack a large fixed blade. Of course in my troop one of the fundraisers was wood sells. We would cut, split, deliver, and stack it. I used a chainsaw a few times and a hydraulic splitter many times.
Also worth mentioning regarding scout/Speider knifes, the classic Scandinavian Scout knifes is always a good choice if it's allowed in your troops. It's a a proven design that's been used since the 50's and has basically the same look from any of the Scandinavian knife companies from Norway, Sweden and Finland.
When I was in Boy Scouts, there was no regulation on what you bring. Considering I was part of the advance party that checks camp site safety before the rest of the troop comes in, we had no restrictions on what we brought. I always brought a 20" machete and an 8" chef's knife.

Hey DCA, I really enjoy these segments! Would you do a segment on knives and multitools used for different trades? I’m a stage hand and looking to possibly update my gear. Thanks!
Hey DCA, I have two questions. 1- What would be a good first spydrco folder for every day tasks and to take camping, and less than 40 dollars? 2- what is your favorite spyderco knife and why? I like hearing other peoples opinions
Hi from Italy, in my country american knives are quite expensive, but I think You can buy a regular tenacious for a good price in Usa, many knife users are happy with this knife. My favorite until now is the manix, but I would like to try the military one day.
Not sure of USA pricing (I'm from Australia) but I will say the Delica hasn't stayed in production all these years for no reason. Great knife - not too big for EDC & strong enough for general hiking/camping use (although depending on need you may also need a larger hard use knife). Check the Knife Centre site for $$$.
hey DCA, im after a modern traditional folder with a roundish tip or sheepsfoot style blade, needs pocket clip. Also a fixed blade for 90 percent food prep and 10 percent camp uses. budget is loose but everything here in Australia costs near double! Thanks
Hey Mr. Andersen, everyone says D2 is hard to sharpen but I'm wondering how you think it compares to other "hard to sharpen" steels like M390? I don't have any trouble keeping my Benchmade 581 with M390 sharp, so I'm wondering if I shouldn't worry about buying a knife with D2 steel like one of those nifty looking RAT 1s?
Hi DCA. ==S.O.S== I need help, recently I purchased a knife (Buck Bos 841) and has micrata handle and I don't know how to maintain clean and looking good, what do you recommend and what oil to use?? Please Help!!
Hey DCA. I was wondering when you would recommend a Tanto Point? I know they're great for piercing, but it seems like the when it comes to EDC it's the last option. Thanks.
Tanto is great for opening packages (the secondary point), great for scraping, piercing etc. EDC is a broad broad thing, depends on how you use your knife.
@@Krusher_Knave "Reverse Tanto" is often just a modified drop point though, I do love my 940 and my Malibu with it but its a bit of a weird name for them and isn't really similar to a tanto besides the tip strength.
I prefer tanto blades on my folders. I use it for all kinds of tasks like scraping surfaces clean, reaming out holes, pulling staples, making shallow draw cuts, etc and I find it to be a very versatile design.
I have a Schrade SCHF1 (one piece metal with hollow sabre grind) as my camping beater knife. I can say it can do most tasks and is hard use. I regularly use it for light chopping and wood prepping (for fires - inc. batoning) with no problems (although grey finish comes off easy). I've had zero problems with the edge. However, the overall knife design is simply not chopping focused and it's not an efficient chopper. If you're looking for a hard use chopper or intend to chop logs etc. look elsewhere.
Hey DCA, my friend is getting married around Thanksgiving, and I'm looking for a knife to get her new husband for a wedding gift. He's a Marine like me, and works in construction. What do you recommend?

I would really like a cooper scaled EDC folder. Preferably American made with a stout 2.5 to 3ish inch blade. I like the Kershaw leek, however the fine blade tip slightly concerning.
I have seen you folks open front flippers repeatedly with the thumb, even though some designers (Ostep Hel maybe?) say that they designed them to be opened with an index finger. My Metamorph definitely opens better this way! Maybe something to try and pass along!
Hey Dca whats a non-threatening one handed opening & closening knife around 3.5". I work at a restaurant and my boss does exactly appreciate my Manix 2
Hey, DCA! Can you present in a future episode all the knives you designed? And also, what would be the specifications(shape, usage, size, materials, etc) of a fixed blade knife under 100$ that you would design?
I like, and own, a lot of high end knives. But that is because I'm a collector. I use a fixed blade for work. The one I grab every single day is a Mora. What does that say?
Hello all at KC!! When I use my leather strop, I am not able to move the knife across it as smoothly as I used to. How can I tell if my strop is getting worn out or how often should I change it out? I do keep infused with the green abrasive. Thank you for your time. Tony
I need a swiss army knife that has a saw, file, and scissors, along with the tweezers, toothpick, and blades (large and small) with can and bottle openers. I have never found this combo.
Hey DCA! I'm looking for a pair of knives to EDC carry at work. A flipper/thumbstud folder for cutting cardboard and packages and a traditional folder that I can bring out at the lunch table without scaring anyone. Oh, and I want them to be matching and stylish. $125 or less for each. Thanks!
Hey DCA; I wear a kilt almost every day, both traditional and utility style kilts. I am looking for a modern take on a Sgian Dubh. I am going to try the Civivi Elementum fixed blade, but it is a bit too long and the blade is rather pedestrian. I carried a CRKT TRIUMPH N.E.C.K. but it is a bit too small and the recurve is a pain to sharpen, especially in the field. I also carried a Cold Steel Spike it is too letter opener and looses utility in it’s narrow blade. The vision I have in my head would be a fixed blade treatment of the Civivi Pintail stopping at an overall length of about 7-1/4” to 7-1/2” a blade length around 3-1/2”. The handle scales would have to be hand friendly but not so thick that it would tilt the knife out from my calf when worn in the top of my kilt hose/ sock, Micarta would be best as it will be in contact with my leg all day. It would need a flat sheath with a pocket clip so it could be tucked into the top of kilt hose/ sock. Any ideas that are readily available and won’t break the bank? GDB, up in Canada.
Hey DCA (and Thomas!), any tips on knowing when to sharpen or strop a knife? I'm just getting into higher grade steels and am working on getting a feel for them.
Some knives feel like they were made for people like me…and they survive my world. Others not so much. For example I broke (massively broke) two Bokers this year and will probably never go there again. So - DCA - how about this for a question…what are some of the most breakable knives? I can think of a few…how about you? 😁
Hi DCA. I'm looking for a one hand opening, UK friendly (sub 3inch non locking blade) multi tool with pliers but I'm having trouble finding one. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks Jack
I would like to hear your thoughts on the best budget knives that deserve premium upgrades. I think the Pilar 3 would be great with some premium materials.
DCA... what is the best blade shape that keeps the tip strong, but still allows the blade to be 'stabby'? It seems I can find a knife with either one, but not both at the same time. Also, what steel would be best for having a strong tip while still strong enough to prevent the tip from breaking? Thanks.
Hey dca can you please talk about bradfords fixed blades. I want to know the benefits of Sabre grind vs sheep’s foot and different handle scales… thanks!
Hi DCA. Great videos, keep it up! Question for KniFAQ: what's the best "on the go" pocket knife sharperner?I've been using the Victorinox's ceramic rod, but I feel it only works well with "softer" steels. Thanks!
I remember my BSA troop didn't allow locking blades or fixed blades longer than 3.5 inches... but no restrictions whatsoever on axes or hatchets. If anyone can figure out the logic to that, I would love to hear it.
Hello, can you help me, I hesitate to buy a fallkniven S1X. who are the competitors? satin finish, no coating, simple design, survival and a bit tactical. Thanks a lot. (Outside esee and top and lion steel and mora)

I store all my autos in the open position to keep the spring from weakening over time. Been doin this for years now and my auto snap like the day I bought em! P.S. Not my Microtech OTFs as they are not under tension when closed or open
@Paul Smith "All springs undergo something called spring creep, otherwise known as "spring relaxation."" This is why my 90's Benchmade Auto is much faster than my cousins Benchmade of the same age and make... A magazine spring is compressed over the length of a long coil of spring steel, Auto knives don't have that luxury..
Hi DCA, love these videos! Wondering if you could recommend some EDC folders with bronze washers that are not Spyderco and not frame locks, for under $150? Cheers.
Speaking of rust and storing. I have a vast ww2 American blade collection. Whats best way to store those mostly carbon steel and leather? Iv spent a lot of $ and time to find good examples of harder to find American issue knives. Thanks
Are you collecting to make money or hobby? If for profit be careful as treatments can reduce value - seek specialist advice eg. museums often have conservation staff willing to help. If for hobby I can say for leather the biggest problems are 1) drying and cracking & 2) excess moisture. A good leather conditioner will help maintain the leather - apply to according to manufacturer. I have found that both bootmakers and saddlers offer good advice & products. As DCA states in video I use desiccant sachets to keep moisture at bay. DCA, can you help re. rust advice?

Thanks
Check out the QSP Worker for a folder. As far as fixed blades, no clue.
That Lionsteel B35 is just about perfect
D2 is not hard to sharpen. I carry d2 daily and can sharpen it in less than 3 minutes. I use dmt Diamond stones.
Hi DCA. ==S.O.S==
I need help, recently I purchased a knife (Buck Bos 841) and has micrata handle and I don't know how to maintain clean and looking good, what do you recommend and what oil to use?? Please Help!!
Hey DCA. I was wondering when you would recommend a Tanto Point? I know they're great for piercing, but it seems like the when it comes to EDC it's the last option. Thanks.
I happen to feel that a reverse tanto is the best utility blade shape. Try looking into those maybe? 😅
@@Krusher_Knave Yeah, Drop point and Warncliff/sheepsfoot seem to be the best. I just haven't really found a practical use for a Tanto.
The ability to engrave your name onto a knife is a great feature for Boy Scout knives.
Hey DCA, my friend is getting married around Thanksgiving, and I'm looking for a knife to get her new husband for a wedding gift. He's a Marine like me, and works in construction. What do you recommend?
David C./ Or Seth V, not familiar with K340 use to 1095 for bush craft. Can one use fire rod on K340 to get fire sparks? How does it compare to 1095 for wear/tear and sharpening. FAQ great show have learned alit. Thanks
Thx for the nice video, verry best cheap do all knife...Mora Kansbol... nothing can beat them! Greetz and stay healty.
Can you recommend some fixed blade knives that have soft rubber grips
I would really like a cooper scaled EDC folder. Preferably American made with a stout 2.5 to 3ish inch blade. I like the Kershaw leek, however the fine blade tip slightly concerning.
See the Kershaw Natrix.
Hey DCA, I’m always on the lookout for a good pair of mustache scissors. The drug store stuff ain’t cutting it! Any suggestions?
I have seen you folks open front flippers repeatedly with the thumb, even though some designers (Ostep Hel maybe?) say that they designed them to be opened with an index finger. My Metamorph definitely opens better this way! Maybe something to try and pass along!
Hey Dca whats a non-threatening one handed opening & closening knife around 3.5". I work at a restaurant and my boss does exactly appreciate my Manix 2
Microtech stitch!
Hey, DCA! Can you present in a future episode all the knives you designed? And also, what would be the specifications(shape, usage, size, materials, etc) of a fixed blade knife under 100$ that you would design?
I stick with a good 25 or 20 degree angle for my knives. Keeps them Razor sharp
The SwissChamp, Ranger, Handyman, Cybertool 41 all have what you need, I think.
Hey DCA! I'm looking for a pair of knives to EDC carry at work. A flipper/thumbstud folder for cutting cardboard and packages and a traditional folder that I can bring out at the lunch table without scaring anyone. Oh, and I want them to be matching and stylish. $125 or less for each. Thanks!
I always wanted to know why spyderco sharpmaker angels starts at 35-40 degrees why didn’t they make it 17-20?
40 degrees is a combined angle. It means 20 per side.
I almost joined the Girl guides by mistake. My first visit my mom had bundled me up so much they mistook me for a girl. Winter 1950's, Canada.
What are the best scout carry fixed blades?
Hey DCA;
I wear a kilt almost every day, both traditional and utility style kilts.
Check out the North Arm Knives Lynx.
It is made in Burnaby, B.C.
Hey DCA who makes the best throwing/ ninja stars ? Reason is I’m a ninja in training 😆
What is the best axis style knife or button lock knife (manual) less than $100?
I believe LT Wright has discontinued their camp muk. What do you think about Joker’s nessmuk? Any other recommendation in that price range?
Hi DCA. I'm looking for a one hand opening, UK friendly (sub 3inch non locking blade) multi tool with pliers but I'm having trouble finding one. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Jack
Hey DCA, I have been wondering at what price point do you feel you start to get diminishing returns? Specifically concerning folders
in 1984 i had a imperial brown plastic scales scout knife i saved up to get a buck pathfinder fixed blade but fixed blade was forbidden...
Hey DCA (or Seth), if you could only have one grind type for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?
I would like to hear your thoughts on the best budget knives that deserve premium upgrades. I think the Pilar 3 would be great with some premium materials.
My vote would be Victorinox. I think a lot of people would be happy to be able to get a Compact or Farmer X in CPM154 or S35VN.
DCA... what is the best blade shape that keeps the tip strong, but still allows the blade to be 'stabby'? It seems I can find a knife with either one, but not both at the same time. Also, what steel would be best for having a strong tip while still strong enough to prevent the tip from breaking? Thanks.
When will the Skipjack knife be available again?
Hey dca can you please talk about bradfords fixed blades. I want to know the benefits of Sabre grind vs sheep’s foot and different handle scales… thanks!
Hi DCA. Great videos, keep it up! Question for KniFAQ: what's the best "on the go" pocket knife sharperner?I've been using the Victorinox's ceramic rod, but I feel it only works well with "softer" steels. Thanks!
Works well enough to get hair popping sharp for 30 bucks or less is the worksharp guided field sharpener
@@TheBudgetguy_K.T thank you!
@@grattof Be sure to do your research it works great for me but might not be perfect for everyone!
Looking for a EDC fixed blade under 30 bucks and i love bigger blades, looking at the crkt minimalist Persian but not sure
I remember my BSA troop didn't allow locking blades or fixed blades longer than 3.5 inches... but no restrictions whatsoever on axes or hatchets. If anyone can figure out the logic to that, I would love to hear it.
Hi dca thanks for amazingly helpful videos. Is 52100 a good steel for knife?do you have any folder suggestion with that steel?
If you could make a dream, high end kitchen cutlery set what would it be? Looking to start saving up for a set piece by piece. Thanks!
Hey DCA I am a model railroader and I need a small knife that will stay sharp for a While have any suggestions?
Butterfly knives...delicious yumm =))
Hello, can you help me, I hesitate to buy a fallkniven S1X. who are the competitors? satin finish, no coating, simple design, survival and a bit tactical. Thanks a lot. (Outside esee and top and lion steel and mora)
Hi,i want to hear your opinion about EKA g3 g4 swedblade and EKA Nordic W12.Thank you
15:40 u wanna talk about ugly spideys lol i have a Gen 1 delica with the built in plastic clip 😅 everytime i handle old school glassed nylon i chuckle alittle
I store all my autos in the open position to keep the spring from weakening over time.
Been doin this for years now and my auto snap like the day I bought em!
P.S. Not my Microtech OTFs as they are not under tension when closed or open
@Paul Smith
"All springs undergo something called spring creep, otherwise known as "spring relaxation.""
This is why my 90's Benchmade Auto is much faster than my cousins Benchmade of the same age and make...
A magazine spring is compressed over the length of a long coil of spring steel, Auto knives don't have that luxury..
Hey DCA looking for a medium (3.75-4") handle slip joint with a decent steel for under $50. Any Recommendations?
Hi DCA, love these videos! Wondering if you could recommend some EDC folders with bronze washers that are not Spyderco and not frame locks, for under $150? Cheers.
Not a Deka either.
Hey DCA which knife is your favorite knife to gift for knife people vs non knife people?
Question for you DCA, There are so many different grades of grades of blade material and I know there's a there's a lot to do with edge retention, Sturdiness and strength of the blade but there are so many there are so many different Numbers and letters for these metal, Is there a place to go to find out what they all mean I have many knives with Many different Blade types, But I don't know what they all mean
Question: Could you recommend a larger fixed blade for slightly smaller than average hands? And also why is it that American knife companies almost always has to put a finger choil on their blades? Thank you
Looking forward to seeing the DCA & Seth episode!
Hey DCA, I’ve been really fascinated with Kukris lately and wanted to get your thoughts and recommendations? What is a good length and thickness, and should it come from Nepal? Thanks for the help!
Get the ontario kukri
Hey D.C.A, I was wondering what is the most affordable folder I could get that has the fancy TI-mascus in the handle? Really love the look of that material but the price is a bit restrictive. Anything in the 200 to 250ish range.? Thanks, still loving the channel. Anthony.
Hey I’ve got a question for Seth and David! I’m looking for a spring assisted knife with steel better than AUS8 or 8cr13mov for under $150. Preferably with a partially serrated option and thumb studs as I’m in Canada and straight flipper knives are frowned upon. I’d like to see what each of you come up with as options. Thanks!
Hey DCA, I was wondering is condor produces anything that compares to the KaBar Becker knives in toughness. A really tough condor knife under 10 inches that can withstand batonning would be awesome. Thank you
The Victorinox Hunter Pro have a 25° angle.
