    I have NO ability to hold a knife freehand at any angle. In my 65 years on this planet I collected a drawer full of knife sharpeners that never did the job for me. I finally found the Worksharp Precision Knife Sharpener. I bought the extra set of sharpening stones and now I can sharpen anything with precision.

      Growing up, I could sharpen just about anything freehand on a stone. It was a relaxing thing for me. I once had a surgeon (relative of mine) comment that my pocket knife was sharper than his scalpel once. Now, I worry about ruining a knife if I tried. Agree on the Workshop. Got the full set, and I love it. Includes a strop so you can polish to your hearts content.

      Freehand is weird.. like juggling.. it feels just totally impossible.. until it doesn’t. It’s not like a gradual thing. All of a sudden it clicks and you know what holding your angle feels like. From there you have it, just work on burr minimization and removal and getting from razor sharp to scary hair splitting sharp.
      Using two hands and large bench stones in a base or clamp really helps. I struggled with one handed small stones, but once I went to bench stones things fell into place quickly. It’s worth the time and frustration to learn, very fun and rewarding having that skill.

      @@Enes-wj5xq first time I was able to get a hair shaving edge was on the back of a coffee mug... Admittedly, I did not have much other "good" sharpeners at that time, but... Interesting thing is that I got so excited that I shaved pretty much completely my left arm, just because... It was working! At first glance wife thought I had some kind of physical condition, and at second (probably the right interpretation...) That I had some strange MENTAL condition, but still it was plenty worth it, and a lot of fun.

    My go-to brand for gents & gift knives is Finch. Great range of styles and colours - most are 3 inch or smaller. Good materials and build quality. Really good for 'non-knife' people as their designs are more traditional than tactical and the colour options improve their appeal. All of my gents/suit/office blades are Finch - I have five that I rotate. Final benefit is that they aren't too expensive. You will find something you like for between US$100 to US$150. Using the Sharp Maker, you must get the Ultra Fine sticks, pay the money and get them. You can use them instead of striping, they will take a sharp edge to razor sharp, shaving sharp, even the better steels will improve in just a couple of swipes. If you can slice a loaf of bread, then you can learn to use a Sharp maker. Best advice is to us the ultra fine sticks often, just like you would striping, they have the red ends painted on them to keep them separate from the fine sticks.

    When you put a sharpmaker or gauntlet in the kitchen its for ease and a quick buff on the edge. Like a butcher processing meat they frequently buff up the edge of their knives. What rod do you leave in the sharpmaker? Is it the ceramic for a quick polish or something more coarse to shave metal? I suppose you just leave it out assembled and slice at it now and again? As far as magnacut making other steels obsolete, I personally like tool steels and agree on 1095. 1095 is just awesome for hard-to-kill woods and yard work blades. Don't get me wrong, I really want a magnacut blade... really eyeing a Doug Ritter RSK Mk1 in magnacut. That is gonna be one of my hard-use and less babied knives. The ultimate "hand held" sharpening system that is idiot proof is the KME sharpener. It can easily be used without the stand and I have achieved some of my best results for a "fast and efficient" sharpening by holding the device. Now for those polished edged, you need the stand to play those games with this sharpening system. The WorkSharp Precision Adjust is a good, inexpensive attempt to copy the KME and served as my "gateway drug" into the world of high end sharpening. The precision adjust is still one of the tools I use to touch-up a blade, but it does not make the grade to be my principle sharpening system. Plus, unlike the KME, it is not hand held.

    • @abc456f
      @abc456f ปีที่แล้ว

      KME is great, but definitely can get pricey when you start optioning it out. I've probably got around $400 into mine by now. Extra stones, lapping films, kangaroo strop, rods for recurved and convex edges. It's like an addiction unto itself beyond the knife addiction. But I can't argue with the results. Whether I just want a decent toothy edge or go full out with a mirror polish, it delivers. I started with the Sharpmaker and got some mixed results. Upgraded to the Lansky and wasn't impressed with the hand held feature. I only use the KME with the stand, another $$ add on.

    Two questions:
    1. I'd like a one hand, discreet pocket fixed-blade that won't scare non-knife people. Imagine the offspring of a Morakniv Eldris and a Baby Banter that mated under a full moon. It would have a 2" slicy blade and slim 3-finger handle. The sheath would have a pocket clip and cover ~¾ of the grip. The idea is the handle pokes out about as much as a Delica. Does anyone make such a critter?
    2: How do I know if you answer my question, so I don't miss that episode?

    Do you have any videos on pocket Balisongs? I have the Spyderco smallfly 2, it's fantastic. Mine is only a few months old. It really doesn't carry well in jeans because of the pocket clip but now switch out to a pair of sleep pants, it rides very well 🤷🏼‍♂️. So it mainly gets used around the house

    Hi DCA, maybe a stupid question answered before but : any good advice on how to store kitchen knives ? In a dedicated sheath, a dedicated drawer ? A magnetic wall stand, a wooden block?
    I´m getting sick having to resharpen my mother’s knives every week because she throw them with a lot of orher things inside kitchen’s drawers…(without talking about dishwasher… 🙄)
    Thx for your help, that can help save money not having to buy sharpening stones frequently 😂

      Personally, I love my magnetic wall rack. I got a simple one sold by Mercer I believe, 24". It will hold about 15 knives, and has very strong magnets.

    • @CrimeVid
      @CrimeVid ปีที่แล้ว

      I use a magnetic knife rack because I don’t really have space for a knife block, BUT, you do have to be careful not to knock knives off by inaccurately grasping a knife handle. And too powerful a magnet is not the best idea either ! If you have space a knife block is good. A knife drawer with individual slots is not bad, but people often don’t put knives back every time they use them, and you end up with several knives lying around.

      Wall magnet with a wood surface so the blade doesn't touch the magnet itself is my preference. Easiest to clean that way and kinder if you bump the edge into it. -DCA

    Hey DCA here's my question. What is up with the insanity of the 1/2 scales? Such as the Giant Mouse Ace Riv in this video. Beautiful brass scale on one side, but then you flip it over to get ugly grey/plain. This drives me crazy, even if it is a short trip. Is there a practical reason this is done, or is it just a design choice?

    Hi David - I have a KniFAQ question for you. I drive a fuel tanker so I use my knife frequently. I currently carry a CRKT M16 EDC. I carry this bc it is lightweight and I can abuse it without having to cry like I would if I messed up one of my higher end knives. However, I find that it is somewhat underbuilt for some of the things I need to do - like cutting thick zip ties, rubber straps etc. Do you have any suggestions for lightweight yet robust folders that can tackle some of the heavier tasks but still carry well in the pocket and arent so heavy they pull my pants down?

Unfortunately this knife was lost and I tried to find a replacement and as of right now was not able to. All serrated kitchen knifes has been sharpened on one side of the blade. Do you know if anyone still made serrated kitchen knife sharpened on both side of the blade? Thanks in advance.

    I have a carbon steel knife that has a discoloration on it. I was told that such a patina helps to protect the steel from corrosion. On the other hand some people like to keep a mirror finish on their blades. Which do you think is better?

    • @daveyboy6985
      @daveyboy6985 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I used to worry about my carbon blades getting stained , and definitely anoyoed if if rusted and got badly pitted.
      Now I force a partina on a new carbon blade, which helps protect against bad corrosion.
      I actually like the look of a patinaed blade, compared to a polished blade. 😊
      Ps it's just about impossible to keep a carbon blade stain free,
      So don't worry about it, it doesn't matter.

    Was talking to a co-worker about ZT and Benchmade being hard use folders. He claimed, ZT 's were better, but I feel that Benchmade makes a tougher knife, the new Adamas being the best example because of the Cruwear steel. I love ZT, but I don't feel they are as tough as Benchmade, what do you think?

    • @Nudel-nc1cp
      @Nudel-nc1cp ปีที่แล้ว

      There are at least 3 good reasons that Benchmade is better for hard work.
      1. Axis lock is stronger than frame lock
      2. Benchmade runs on washers so dirt is not a problem
      3. Variety of steels to choose from where ZT's are mostly 20cv or s35vn

    My wife's favorite folder has some recurve to it and it's sort of a pain to sharpen. She certainly doesn't cut much with her recurve, but I'd be willing to upgrade my bargin find sharpening stone for the Sharpmaker if it sharpens recurves well!

    • @levelwu
      @levelwu ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Save your cash, SharpMaker should really be called SharpKeeper. Good for touchups, nicely packaged and all but it takes so long to sharpen anything and keeping consistent strokes is a bigger challenge than marketed as 'up/down movement. You will have better luck with flat stones or DMT diamonds, especially for recurve blades. Good luck!

      @grovesy333 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@levelwu You’re wrong I’ve taken a super dull 8 inch chefs knife to a hair shaving sharp edge on the sharpmaker, it’s an idiot proof sharpener straight up and down is all that’s needed it’s really not a “challenge” Lol what are you sharpening exactly ? • @abc456f
      @abc456f ปีที่แล้ว

      @@levelwu I agree with you. I've had mixed results with the Sharpmaker. Keeping the blade perfectly up and down introduces variability. And if you're going to need to sharpen s30v or harder, you definitely need the diamond stones or you'll be spending quite a bit of time. The KME is much pricier, but the ease of use and results are far superior.

      The Sharpmaker works well with a recurve. You just sharpen it against the "corners" of the triangular stones, not the flat sides.
