Fabulous! Thanks for posting this! For the first time in 5 years of having my horse, she developed mud fever 😔. Not on her hind white leg mind you. She has to run to the beat of her own drummer and goes for both front legs. Yay.... 😭.
Thank you for sharing this video. I have been driven insane by this problem with my Arabian horse. I've spent so much money on veterinarian bills, antibiotics and such, only to be told the leg isn't healing because I am "doing too much" to it. Of course, the moment I stop cleaning it, scabs grow like crazy. I am feeding my horse immuno-boosting supplements as well as a toxin binder to help the problem from the inside, but it hasn't resolved the issue completely. I believe I have most of the ingredients you list.. I will try this tomorrow.
+Dinka D How did it go Dinka? Depending on how long the scratches have been going on, you may have to re-wrap and treat...if a good response you can treat and leave the wrap off (depending on mud conditions etc.) I have had such success with this, and I have Arabians too who I feel are more scratches prone. Good luck!
+Charming Creek Farm : Well, I applied the mix of Flamazine cream, Thuja ointment, zinc and Vaseline, and wrapped the leg up. 24 hours later there were no scabs. I repeated the treatment and after just two days I had a healthy looking leg. I did not bandage after that, just kept up the treatment and protected the leg with a mesh cover. But then, a few days ago, I came to the paddock to find my horse had a swollen fetlock. Yes, the white leg. Most likely a paddock injury caused by the new horses that also gave him a large bite on the neck (he still has a lump there). I was forced to apply therapeutic mud to the leg that day. It was just for 12 hours, but the damn dermatitis came back with a vengeance. Long story short: I have since moved my horse to a completely new agistment property. They run the place properly and control weeds, which can contribute to this problem. My horse is happy and relaxed there, and I have access to a hot wash. In the past 24 hours the leg has improved a lot. I am hopeful that the treatment plus wrapping will bring it back under control quickly, and that the new clean environment will help him to fully get over it. Fortunately the swelling went down and he doesn't seem lame, so that's one blessing.
+Dinka D Hi Dinka...sorry to hear your horse sustained an injury, but glad the scratches treatment worked so well for you! Let us know how things are going...best wishes! Charming Creek Farm
Thank you, I didn't have all the same ingredients but understood the jest of what you were creating. After 24 hrs there was a drastic change for the better. So i reapplied and will be checking in another 24hrs. I may not have to buy the Vet's cream.
Hi... here is my update... I used the mixture about 4 times with 48 hours in between washing and rewrapping each time... I think it was getting better... so the last time I took the wrap off... I used a new spray on it and didn't wrap it... the next day it was swollen. I left it alone... and it's still swollen today. The spray must have irritated his leg. I'm not sure what to do now... it seems sensitive. Should I try to wash it and then rewrap again with your mixture? or should it not be wrapped because it's swollen? I'm confused. :( I should have just kept doing what I was doing. :(
Hi LWH...it's really hard for me to advise you without seeing in person...this sounds like a veterinarian question now...I don't know what spray you used... sorry...only sharing a treatment that has worked for us. We wish you the best...seek a veterinarian's advice
I do not stall them unless weather is horrendous, but I would wrap them daily while out. Be careful with Betadine scrub...some horses are sensitive to it. I don't think "pink stuff" is available anymore ..just use desitin. Good luck!
The other thing I should have done with Stein was clip that fetlock/pastern hair once the initial soreness was gone. I have a white footed Arab that is also very scratches prone....this is the time of year for it 🙁
Lois Smith she luckily doesn’t show any soreness when I clean the area! The diluted betadine scrub didn’t bother her either. However, She cut up her legs recently (did not like the other horse in the trailer and threw a fit) so avoiding that now as I read it can cause tissue damage. On top of that I’m Also dealing with some fungus on her cannon bones 🤦🏼♀️ I have the zinc oxide paste from equi derma which I think is very similar to destin? I washed her with the eqyss MicroTek shampoo yesterday and let it sit and rinsed, dried and put the paste on but didn’t cover it before putting her into the stall. My vet says pick off the scabs and my instructor says not too..I have been way too nervous to pick them off personally though.
Thank you for this! I'm finding most of the ingredients online, but the silver sulfadiazine cream looks like you need a prescription... is there something else I can use in it's place? And is the safeguard just a de-wormer?
you are right...just leave the silver sulfadiazine out of the mixture...yes, the Safeguard is a dewormer. Thanks for pointing this out and best of luck with healing scratches!
Hi... thank you! I got everything mixed up (minus the silver sulfadiazine)... going to try it out either today or tomorrow. Can you tell me what the silver sulfadiazine does or what it is? Someone gave me some dex (don't know the full name) but is a steroid for hives and also good for scratches.. mixed with fura zone and desitin. I haven't tried it yet, but would that be something that could replace the silver sulfadiazine? or do they do different things? Just curious.
Hi Life With Horses! Silver sulfadiazine is used with other treatments to help prevent and treat wound infections in patients with serious burns. Silver sulfadiazine works by stopping the growth of bacteria that may infect an open wound. Since the term "scratches" is a broad one, I add it to the mix of other ointments to make a "catch-all" remedy. I had forgotten it was prescription and will be revising the video to take it out of the recipe. I think you will find the same success without it. I've had horses in the past that were so inflamed by the result of scratches, the silver sulfadiazine really seemed to soothe and quiet things down. I think silver sulfadiazine is not steroidal but I will have to research that. The main thing is to get a protective wrap on for a day or two, and then re-treat as needed. We have had great success with it as you can see in the video. I have a few Arabs also and they seem more prone to scratches, some more than others. Best of luck and let us know how things go!
Thank you! Yes.. I just used a regular zinc oxide. I used it yesterday and even video taped it! I'll let you know how it goes! I made double the batch so if I needed it again.. I would have it already... is that ok? Does it last like that all mixed together or should it be mixed up new each time?
That mixture looked complicated. It works though! You take great care of your horses! 💗🐎

Did you find this help my horse has it in both back legs and there white

Did you keep them stalled the whole time? It’s summer and the scratches on my mare are getting worse even with betadine scrubs and zinc oxide paste.

LWHTV...I might also add that Thuja Zinc is no longer available either by scrip OR over the counter. Regular zinc oxide can be substituted
Thank you!
