I like this movie because it's based on the true history of Christina, Queen of Sweden, that was probably a lesbian. It's nice to show it because, even though she was kinda crazy, history tends to erase lesbians when they can. Showing there were women loving women in history is invigorating.

And a bed warmer was an actual thing back then, because Sweden was a cold country and the royal castle was of course freezing and didn't have a heat system so body heat from another person was the efficient way to keep yourself warm during the nights

No but queen Kristina the first of Sweden was so interesting. She was the most intense person, her dad who she idolized died when she was 4 I think. She also HATED women, because she was taught from birth that women could not rule yet she was one of the most successful rulers in Swedish history, which is why she is often theorized to be a trans man because she was constantly thorn between her being a good ruler and that she was a woman. And her official title was king Kristina. She was deeply in love with a maid named Ebba who was her "bed companion". She also abdicated from the throne cause she thought Sweden was too small and uncultured, so she moved to Italy and became a Catholic and changed her name to Alexandra after her childhood idol Alexander the great.

She was so "difficult," to deal with for the higher ups in Swedish government and refused to marry or submit to men that after she said fuck you to Sweden and left they removed the female throne inheritance and it wasn't reinstated till 1980

Kristina of Sweden was very, very real! She abdicated the throne because she wanted to live freely in Rome, given she was gay, didn’t want to marry, and had converted to Catholicism. It definitely wasn’t over just one girl. The blonde and brunette thing; I guess life imitates art, because Kristina was indeed dark-haired and Ebba Sparre was in fact blonde. There is a real portrait of Ebba Sparre in a blue dress much like the one in the film. And trust me, the lesbian did not “get nothing;” Kristina spent the rest of her days partying in Rome; eating, drinking, reading, watching plays and having affairs. She brought peace to a war that had lasted decades and brought science and education to Sweden on an unprecedented scale; and she was in fact quite tomboyish in her youth. The writers of the film actually got a lot right (except Kristina actually hated Descartes).
Little thing that I think no one mentioned so far: the blonde/brunette thing in this case is historically accurate.

idk if even people in sweden knows this but, kristina WAS king. the titles king and queen weren’t necessarily actually gendered during her time, we only think of them as gendered because kong’s were men and and women queens (which is why we use it like that today). but kristina’s official title was king, even though we refer to her as queen today. i’m not sure that’s why the films title is the girl king but it might be. it also might have been said in the comments already (but it’s midnight and election day so i dare you tell me to go on a hunt) but a major part as too why she abdicated wasn’t really JUST freedom it was because being a catholic was a legal (because her grandpa made it illegal) and she found herself more into catholicism than protestantism which is what is the most common in sweden even 400 years later. good night.

Well :D I think Queen Christina in the end was fed up of being Queen. She worked very hard, got up at early hours, was awake for a very long time and wanted to push forward science and arts which she definitely did and that was her biggest wish. Changing her confession from lutheran (?) to catholic made her drift apart from the Swedish people but helped her to be free. Later she went to Rome where people let her be the way she was (lol no idea if the pope or whoever was ok with her being so gay sometimes, I'd really love to read more about her stay there) and she could study science, culture and arts as much as she wanted.
She was definitely a very smart person and a free spirit. I read a book written by her about herself. She wrote it because she thought, that anyone else wouldn't really get to the bottom of her. And it was interesting how she depicted her country's history, her family and also it seemed like she hated the way women were at that time. Also she had lots of quotes in there, like lots of wise sentences to go by or not :D
Btw: I read somewhere else that she sent letters to the dear bed companion, even when she was in Rome later. Seemed like she never really got over it :(
Anyway. A very interesting character. Also I like the actress playing her: Malin Buska. She is a style icon and seems to be a very successful actress now in Sweden (she is swedish).

premium useless lesbian I feel the same way the whole movie. I felt like she was abusing her power over the girl and she only went along because the queen was so forceful.
I agree with your train of thought. But we should also view their relationship taking into account the context. It was the 17th century, Kristina was a powerful woman raised as a prince and surrounded by men. She had a romantic inclination toward women yet she didn't really understand what she felt or how to act on it. I think this is pretty clear in the movie. However Kristina and Ebba both sent each other love letters showering the other with affection actually. It was a consensual relationship in spite of one being above the other in terms of royal hierarchies.
Maybe the director should had been more careful when it comes to consent. Besides, there's this "influenced by the occult and the devil" theme through the movie which leaves homosexuality and the Queen on questionable grounds which is uncomfortable on so many levels unfortunately.

Gala Ferrari i dont think Kristina is influenced by devil thing in this moive.She was described as ’a Christian without faith‘ and from the friendship with Descartes we may assume that she never believed in any Gods or Devils. So in the film that book proves that devil is not as described as in bible which encourages her to follow her heart.

Yes the keypoint should be the 17th century when people lived their lives without any concern to their existence or to their own feelings, emotions...“Christina is remembered as one of the most educated women of the 17th century” as it is described in Wikipedia, I dont think she would believe "life is gray" as it is decribed by Ebba. That is why she struggled a lot to figure life more out with philosophy rather than with dogma but at the same time they were people who lived 400 years ago there were so many things science has not explained yet then. There are 2 scenes with a fly in the moive and it is interesting when it comes to the attitudes of Christina to those things dogma forbidden.Actully She has been restrained much more as she grows up yet the same time she is struggling more to find her own way which finally leads her to freedom.
For me the moive is more like a luminous story, "a separate piece of art" to decribe one's life with a certain tale of her sexual orientation. I believe this 106mins moive has done a relatively good job to depict an extraordinary King's portrait with her aspiration, her curiosity, her dignity and her passion and I love the tender way they did it :)

One lesbian movie I don't think many people know and talk about but I think is really good one is called out at the wedding. The first 20 minutes maybe is a little slow but it gets really hilarious.
