I knew someone 20 years ago who regularly wore pigtails, but she was one of those (un?)lucky blondes whose hair was as long as her waist and dead straight. Pigtails were the only way she could keep it out of the way; even a ponytail wasn't enough. She looked like she was doing a Sailor Moon cosplay whenever she was in uniform (we worked at a casino, so white shirt and vest).
I grew up in a poor, conservitive town in Northern CT and I think it's entirely reasonable to say that this movie changed my life when I first saw it in 1999.
This movie is a good example of what an honest, true satire comedy movie can be. There are so many elements of this script that you could feel were someone's experience or a collective experience within queer culture that when you show it through a satirical lens, you can see a honest, sometimes brutal and gut-wrenching truth. The moments with the kids and their parents, the stolen moments between characters, their longing and confusion and wants, elevate the comedy because it's authentic (well as much as one can be in a comedy). It's uncomfortable. It's awkward. It's where the culture was in the 90s into the 00s surrounding queer culture. The satire is used tactfully, and it's messaging coherent. It's not the best comedy ever made but not the point. But also, it has Dante basco, aka Zuko, so automatic 10/10, lol
I remember when this was on TV at night in the mid 2000's. It was one of those movies where you had to like, flip through the channels, go past it, and then go to the TV Guide and see when it was replaying later that night when everyone else was asleep to sneak it.
Megan’s mother is played by THEE MINK STOLE. I don’t know how much John Waters you have or haven’t watched, but Mink Stole is one of his regular actors and she was always hilarious.
I remember when I first saw this movie (probably rented it soon after release) and when I saw her parents were Mink Stole and Bud Court I busted up laughing.
My favorite part was the mixed messages in almost every scene. RuPaul's character can't hide who he really is. the soldier cutouts...a kneeling man in front of a gun wielding soldier the barrel at waist level. almost ever scene tries to undermine the "message"
One of my favorite movies! I drove an hour to see this in the theater when it came out, because it had a limited release. At the time, I didn't fully understand why I was drawn to this movie. I just knew I had to see it, and I wasn't disappointed!
I finally saw this for the first time recently too and am kicking myself for having slept on it for so long. What a great camp classic, that still packs so much heart. this should be required viewing for everyone (the movie and your video!). Great video, Jess! Hope this latest hurricane wasn't any trouble for you.
The reason Larry looks so familiar is he's played by Richard Moll. Probably best known for playing Bull Shannon in the long-running sitcom Night Court, he's been in nearly 200 productions, mostly comedy and horror. @9:15 - The line about getting gender roles mixed up because her father is weak makes total sense given that Megan is naïve, but it would also work if she weren't. Her mother sent her here, thus her "treatment" requires undermining her mother's power in the home dynamic. So if she were out and proud this would still be a useful tactic to get her father to take back control.
Natasha Lyonne is and always has been a darling. Be sure not to miss her in Slums Of Beverly Hills (with dearly departed Alan Arkin), Detroit Rock City, and (if you dare) Freeway 2.
I'm so happy you did this movie!! 💕 And thrilled that you liked it. I remember being up in Alaska for my first summer, and this was tucked in the back of the communal library. Intrigued by a colorful case and actors I recognized, I watched it. And proceeded to watch it about once a week for 3 months, then asked if I could take it home with me. The cast is amazing, the soundtrack is full of bangers, it's based on a real story from Jamie Babbitt, and it hit on a lot of levels for me: bisexual, former cheerleader, the parental friction, being told what you look like or how you're feeling or how you are (or who you are) is wrong, learning to accept that you need to do and be whatever is right for you and that it's nothing to apologize for.... Anyway, it's a great film, and I'm really happy you enjoyed it.
SO many big name actors in this. And some who are best known from cult classics. This movie is fantastic, but I was highly amused by your commentary about the interruption to their high school education!!! Lol. Enjoying the reaction.

A couple of years back I was putting together a video for my Film Group about queer films with happy endings, so I rewatched this movie. It was then I realised that the cute Lesbian at the bar is Julie Delpy. As a massive fan of the Before Trilogy it freaked me the F out.
Graham's father was played by Richard Pine (CHIPS). Who is the father to actor Chris Pine (Star Trek, etc.). This whole cast was stacked with young future talent and the old guard. And Mel Brooks said the best way to deal with tough issues was through comedy. This was literally the first (and for the longest time only) film about conversion therapy. And it was very respectful of the subject. AND the soundtrack rock's.
This film is an absolute work of art, and I'm so happy you like it. I'm having a really hard time rn with one of my newly out friends, who is still completely culturally straight. She refuses to learn the history or watch any of the movies, and i can tell she's still deep in comp-het and internal homophobia. I tried to show this movie to her and she spent the whole film bashing it cause it's weird apparently. Sorry for the rant, it's just so frustrating to have someone say they're queer, yet have no knowledge or respect for those of us who came before and paved the way for her to be so flippent about everything. My tips for perfect full pigtails: use a mirror. Divide the hair into 2 even sections. (I've found the easiest way is to use a big comb, put it in the middle of the hairline at your nape, then drag it straight up to the hairline at your brow and smooth the sides away from the part into two sections. Fix where wonky.) Put one side in a low ponytail to keep it out of the way. Smooth the other side up to where you want the pigtail (same method as making a regular ponytail) and hold it in place with your elastic. I like using a landmark to get them even; you can measure up from your ear, or try to frame your forehead, etc. Ex: I have a handy little divot across the top of my head from constant headset use so they're not too far back, and then line them up with the arch of my eyebrows. Repeat the process on the other side. Tilt your head a few ways to see if they look even, and loosen the elastic, readjust, then tighten (don't take them all the way out!) to correct if needed. Use a brush or small comb to smooth any bumps. Voila! Perfect anime girl pigtails. This is a good base technique if you want to bun braids or panda buns too. A similar principle applies for the accent pigtails Darling did. Just divide out a smaller section, but use the same method to figure placement. A landmark is a lifesaver.

One thing to realize about the late 90s was neither side wanted to acknowledge bisexuals existed.
