The game design and overall SP campaign are incredible. Love this game, perhaps my fav FPS campaign. But Q3 was a lovecraftian FPS that nailed the MP gameplay of arena shooters. It's still unmatched. No wonder this game wasn't going to cut it for the core fans of Q3. Q1 and Q3 are different to Q2 and Q4. They should be two different titles.
Yeah most Q2 fans didn't like Q4 much either. Most of that was technical, and related to choices Raven made with regards to the "feel" of the game, the combat, etc. The story was predictable, but decent, level design was good too. The rest was a mixed bag at best. Even trying to mod the game was a chore compared to previous titles. And that's where all these games survived. This is a bit late of course, but you actually touched on some history there. Originally, Quake II was intended to be a completely different franchise, but after trying several titles that turned out to already be trademarked, id gave up and just called the game "Quake II".

doom 3 wasn't a sequel, it's a reboot of first game. A good remix. Played Quake since the first entry of the series. Q4 had the large detriment to have a limited multiplayer mode in Germany, my home country. If you bought the German verison, you could play exclusively with other Germans - and with no one else. Was a real show stopper when me and my international gaming friends found out. Haven't touched it since finishing the single player for that reason. Played Q1 to 3 over and over again extensively, though

Let me tell you something, Q2 and Q4 are my favorite Quake games, and Doom 3 my favorite Doom game, 3 of some of the best FPS ever made, don't let anybody make you think otherwise.
Over the course of a year and a half, i had around 1200 hours in the quake 4 multiplayer (the server i ran and the others i played on used a mod called Q4Max). It was the first online multiplayer game i got into. The engine quake 4 used is the predecessor to the Source engine, the amazing (if somewhat dated) engine running Team Fortress 2 (my all time favorite multiplayer game).
Quake 2 is my all time favourite of all ID Software games. I very like the idea of Stroggs and futuristic space shooting so I was looking forward to play Quake 4 back in the day. I liked the game but for me it lacked that feel of Quake 2. It's hard to explain but I love that 90s feel of Quake 2 and the way people imagine future back then. I loved that Guards looked like Judge Dredd, I loved that bulky blaster, cosmic looking shotgun and so on. That what I was missing in the Quake 2 - the enemies were too clean, "rounded", futuristic in the way we see it today, not in the 90s and so with the weapons. I would love to see Stroggs, Bitterman, Joker, Stepchild and Kane beeing remake whit that 90s look :)
Wouldn't you absolutely LOVE a remake or a remaster of this legendary game? I always see people throwing nothing but shit at it. Bro this game was one hell of a ride. It even gets better after Operation Last Hope where you get to *experience* the sheer scale of the attack, the execution of a massive plan against an alien race on their own freaking planet. It was so good, I think I lost count of all the times I beat Quake 4. It'll forever hold the most special place in my heart, maybe even my all time most favorite game.
I'm playing through the game right now. It starts a little slow, but I've enjoyed it way more than I thought I would. I don't know why I never finished this game, but I intend to this time. I miss this era of FPS's when developers like Raven Software were pumping out games like Soldier of Fortune, Star Trek: Elite Force, & Quake 4
i don't think there will ever be a sequel or a remake of quake 4, considering how forgotten it really is, it feels weird knowing that doom 3, despite its change from previous doom titles, still recieves more attention and even mods, yet quake 4 is just a memory hole
Stroggified. It is a great game. Speaking of Doom 3 I loved the horror elements. Especially the audio tapes that you found, it was a great creepy build up.
i liked it at the time, but i have never even installed it again, ever, and i forget it ever exists for long stretches of time, just to be reminded here and there that "ah, there was such a game".
Totally underrated especially in its own time. I have always thought of the Strogg as an enemy worthy of a well written and fleshed out ( pun not intended! ) enemy and I think this game is worthy not just of a remaster, but a full redux and start the story from there! Not really interested in MP even though I know alot of people went for older Quake games for that. My first Quake was Q2 and until Q4 came I think Q3 arena was my thing.
>Totally underrated especially in its own time Not really when you consider its predecessors. Quakers are like COD players who bemoan that MW2 was the best ever - except they are still playing their fav quake 20 years later.
@@joel6376 like yeah it really was. Maybe because I am older, but IDC about " Quakers " or " CODers " or any of the other made up sociological groups or sets that's the cool- speak. Game was dope for it's time, period.
@@marcusclarkson2657 It wasn't underrated because its predecessors did everything it did (that was important to the players at the time), only better. The COD analogy was to show that the people who liked quake, kept playing the earlier titles that were superior in whatever way those players wanted, rather than proclaiming they liked the old version but still ditching it when the next COD came along. This was probably a detriment to the genre but it is what it is.
Nice review but i want to mention that Quake 4 is part of PC gamepass (since 2022), that version already has all the fixes so it can run on modern hardware and Windows 10/11.
Its a mixed bag. I loved Doom 3 and wanted to love Quake 4 but found it just a little lacking. The vehicles were a little wonky, and on the 360 the game looked pretty blurry
From all Quake games I liked Quake IV the most. And yes, I played all of them back in the days when they were new and popular releases. I wish they continued in this direction and gave us Quake V.
@10:50 what do you mean "I'd recommend the first game: Quake Live" Quake Live is a reboot of Quake 3 to run on modern hardware with better networking support. Definitely not the first Quake. Also you say Q4 multiplayer movement isn't much faster, but then you show footage of them flying around the map using crouch sliding techniques... It's very fast.

because of the engine this game just always LOOKED like an alternate reality doom 3
Always loved the intro. So brutal!
This game was amazing and I never hear anyone talk about it!
Man, imagine if Stroggos was found after Halo 3
Over the course of a year and a half, i had around 1200 hours in the quake 4 multiplayer (the server i ran and the others i played on used a mod called Q4Max). It was the first online multiplayer game i got into.
The engine quake 4 used is the predecessor to the Source engine, the amazing (if somewhat dated) engine running Team Fortress 2 (my all time favorite multiplayer game).
My second favorite game, love it!
Amazing video, i enjoyed watchin it, thank you. Quake 4 is an amazing game, and i'll play it again soon.
Man we NEED a sequel
Calling Strogg-themed games “Quake” was id’s biggest flop that gave us all this identity crisis.
Damn, that's 2000s... Look those graphics... Q4 and D3 are masterpieces. They aged very well.
It'll forever hold the most special place in my heart, maybe even my all time most favorite game.
i can't wait to play this in vr soon
I wish more games would've used id Tech 4. Doom 3, Quake 4, Wolfenstein 2009, and my favorite one, Prey 2006, all used it and I loved all of them.
Nice work
i don't think there will ever be a sequel or a remake of quake 4, considering how forgotten it really is, it feels weird knowing that doom 3, despite its change from previous doom titles, still recieves more attention and even mods, yet quake 4 is just a memory hole
It's definitely a franchise with an identity crisis. Doom has always been doom, even with the drastic changes with Doom 3. Quake needs a reboot.
Never finished q4 but I played it alot years ago. Fantastic game.
Quake 4 the type of game I keep coming back to every year or so. I just love the moment you get turned into a Strogg.
Stroggified.
It is a great game.
Speaking of Doom 3 I loved the horror elements. Especially the audio tapes that you found, it was a great creepy build up.
I need a Quake 4 remake soo bad🔥
Loved it back then. Played it shortly after Doom 3 and Prey. Love it still. Would love to see it back on steam with achievements .
Thanks for this man, loved it! also loved the game so finally someone who also doesn't keep it to himself!
i liked it at the time, but i have never even installed it again, ever, and i forget it ever exists for long stretches of time, just to be reminded here and there that "ah, there was such a game".
11 year old me had a blast with this game
This was awesome, still thinking about from time to time
Totally underrated especially in its own time.
>Totally underrated especially in its own time
Not really when you consider its predecessors.
Good game! I rly hope that we weill see a sequel
the way they appear from darkness. 🍷😈
Happy you like it. I couldn’t ever get into it. Might try again one day. But I runs all weird on my pc for some reason
There is no Dead Space without these versions of Quake and Doom.
I love quake 4, one of my favourite early 360 surprises
Its a mixed bag. I loved Doom 3 and wanted to love Quake 4 but found it just a little lacking. The vehicles were a little wonky, and on the 360 the game looked pretty blurry
From all Quake games I liked Quake IV the most. And yes, I played all of them back in the days when they were new and popular releases.
I wish they continued in this direction and gave us Quake V.
I played that one on christmas eve 2005, so fcking high, that was a great christmas i fondly remember! cheers from bavaria!
Outstanding video I subbed
Completely forgot i played this game, but good memories came!
Thank you for posting this man ive been itching to do vids on older games and this game came out during the MP heavy period so its singleplayer and story just got over looked it was very fun replayed it during coivd while smerrrking a few bowls, and some whiskeyyy cheers mate!
DO HIM PAIN!!!
-Random Strog warrior.
the speed in which you moved was key i believe. I played it on the hardest difficulty when i was like 12-13 years old. Monsters could close the gap easily and scared the shit out of you
Probably not too long before we get a remastered version of this game.
I bought Quake 2 for my Playstation 5 yesterday in it's actually really cool.
3:45 Have you read Starship Troopers? There is nothing at all in this game that looks like how things are described in the book.
So true, it is super underrated.
Those where the good old days
Quake 2 is remastered, time for Quake 4 to get the same treatment someday
I'm sure it will. It'll most likely be like what Doom 3 BFG edition is.
@@SackoYTMaybe they could work on that cancelled Awakening expansion again
*STROGG!!!*
The first game i played and finished (twice) back in the day for the Xbox 360.
