Dude Quake 4 was awesome! I love this game I still have the game disc for my xbox 360. This game was one my first introduction to ID software & Raven software games. It blows my mind that people hated this game.
I remember this actually being the first Quake game I ever played years back on the 360 and surprisingly part of the reason it's pretty easy to get a 360 copy is cause Bethesda did a rerelease of that version a year after it hit Steam (though it doesn't come with the 360 port of Quake 2 like the Activision release did). And noting on the amount of hate Quake 4 gets, some people despise it so much that they say it killed the franchise (despite Quake Wars and Quake Champions coming out).
Hmm... I'm honestly curious what would Jarek think about this one little game called 'Bedlam'. That game where you travel through history of FPS games.
Dont care what anyone says I enjoyed quake 4 and dont get the hate for it either. it's a solid old school shooter done in the Doom 3 engine. It's not as old school as quake 1 or 2 but it's it's own game with it's own unique feeling and I enjoyed it. And the story is pretty good if you pay attention to it.
This was one of my earliest games I played on the 360 and I remember hearing about the hate against it and never understood why. I enjoyed it since I played the first two (via N64. Hadn't played the PC verions yet). So yeah there's that. On a side note I did play the Quake II copy it came with.
I think the game overall is good, not too bad and not too great. For me, it feels like a Doom 3 standalone expansion rather than a Quake game, Which is why somebody might not like it, but it’s not a bad game per se.
Me too.. if you are on PC, get the 4x ai upscaled textures mod from moddb .. they look excellent. Also use reshade for color correction and ambient occlusion and the game looks amazing. Peace
Up until Q4 my favorite singleplayer-oriented Quake was Q2, which made me like Q4 even more for being a sequel to that game. At the time I thought it was much better than Doom 3, since you already started right into the action and there was even some vehicle/mech levels (which I also thought that were amazing, TBH). Enemy designs were incredible and the arsenal was deadly and efficient (at least there was actual flashlights on some weapons, too).
I think a lot of the hate was from people who were expecting a game more like Q3A or maybe even Quake 1, to this day I still want a proper sequel to Q1 but it didn't stop me from enjoying Q4, it is a solid game, the strogg transformation scene was sick.
My generalization of this game is that it's DOOM 3 but more action-focused with that later-Quake coat of paint. It's fine, I beat it a few times but I never thought it was amazing. It really only got hate because Quake 2 and Quake 3 completely derailed the serie's focus. Is Quake MP-focused or SP-focused? I don't even know how to feel about that. It's still a good game so no problem from me.
Despite sci-fi shooters being my favorite genre I'm surprised the only experience I have with the quake series is quake 4's demo on 360, game still looks as fun as I can remember. Need to actually buy this one
I loved the storyline to be honest. It basically was just a follow up to Quake 2. It didn't need to have a super complicated and in-depth story line. It's basically just a war against a race that threatens Earth and other worlds' survival. And the gunplay I enjoyed very much as well. It wasn't ground breaking and I think that's what people want....every subsequint game has to be ground breaking for some reason.
I play first person shooter games for 20 years now. In my opinion Quake 4 has the best and smoothest shooting and aiming. I dont even know why. It gives wonderful feedback.
Played it last year, and really had a bang. Especially the first half of the game was pretty climatic, almost felt like playing Verhoeven 'Starship Troopers'.
As you alluded to i think because the game lacked an obvious hook people aren't interested in it, the hook in Doom 3 is obvious, it's dark and scary and even now there aren't many games like it, then Quake 4 comes along and is just a really solid enjoyable shooter and didn't stand out to people, besides that stroggification sequence :P. Another example, i got the game for christmas along with FEAR and COD2, everyone was talking about FEAR at the time it was really impressive and scary, i loved COD2 for its explosive fast paced WW2 action and awesome multiplayer, then there was Quake 4 which, at the time, i didn't really get on with. Fast forward i replayed it a few years ago and i love it, no one makes games like this anymore, in a world where COD and BF are pretty much the only shooters you're lucky if you even get a campaign in those, DOOM came and broke up the tedium a bit, but if you're looking for a single player shooter campaign to heal your soul Quake 4's got your back.
Quake 4 is a great game and my favourite Quake campaign. It fills me with dread about what humanity could turn into, which I think is more horrifying or in a way more "lovecraftian" than shooting tentacle monsters which I think the haters wanted.
I have an older buddy, who everytime I show him a game and how good it looks, he's like "why doesn't it look better". Since I started playing quake 4, on a XP machine and CRT, F.E.A.R. and the like I'm now thinking the same thing
I know this is an old video, but I just wanted to say that the thing that sours me on Quake 4 (which had good single player) is that it came out around a time when not only was the fast-paced, frenetic style of old-school deathmatching falling by the wayside, but multiplayer shooter games in general were shifting from dedicated servers and extensive modding and mapping support to company-run matchmaking servers and paid DLC maps. I feel like a Quake 4 with stellar multiplayer and a vibrant modding community would have made EA and Activision (among others) think twice before closing the walls around their big shooter franchises in favor of their current live service model.
Dude I really appreciate you doing this video! Quake 4 is one of my Favorite FPS games a long with the 1st F.E.A.R! I've been praying to the Game Gods for a sequel to Quake 4 every I finished it back in 2005. I think it's a great game. We need more quality/ creative FPS games. Enough of Call of Duty and Battlefield already. Whatever happened to the amazing quality and creativity. Like for example Chronicles of Riddick Escape from Butcher Bay! 😎
I love quake 4 the shooting in the game is so satisfying, I think I got all the achievements for it on Xbox. I just wish that someday we get a sequel to the original quake like quake 4 does to quake 2.
I am probably the few who loved this game, what I loved was the scripted scenes and brief NPC that make you feel like you are not alone. It took another 2 years before Call of Duty 4 turns up and improved scripted FPS and NPC genre. Although the game did drag on too long at some point
Got this for 4 bucks at Big Lots and play it at least once a year. That texture issue patch also makes a big fix to frame rate problems so I highly recommend it.
I like how the hate back then was its a generic fps. Im from that time and I don't know what fps they were playing because the selection wasn't that big. I haven't seen a sifi shooter with this much gore in it anywhere else execpt doom. Whis was also theirs. Can't bunnyhop in campaing= bad. Thats all it is. It plays exactly like the older quakes minus the cocaine
This was my first Quake and man i was stunned by it , i love boomer shooters, but was born right during the modern age so i find this game a good mix of both elements
This game was amazing and if you want to play a classic quake experience this game has a pretty awesome multiplayer with fast movement and all that arena stuff we love of quake.
My first, and only, and favorite quake game. I can understand the quake fans not liking it because it didn't feel quake enough, but before this I only played doom 3, and I love thinking of it more like a doom 3 spinoff but action focused.
Personally. I didnt mind it. I grew up on wolfenstein doom quake 1 2 and arena. It didnt have the charm of 1 or 2. Let alone nostalgic feel. But it was good in its own. Also that transformation scene was badass.
Quake4 is hated? It is like a sister game to Doom 3 with many enjoyable additions and I love it. Raven showed their talent yet again with that game but as with many of Raven's games, Quake4 was also sadly forgotten.
Also @JarekTheGamingDragon are you able to do tom clancys rogue spear? I remember spending countless hours on that game in single player and multiplayer up until something lime 2006/7 with a large moding community. Another game along those lines of developer/publisher going down the tubes was Delta Force.
I actually liked the game, also the ,,upgrades,, were cool ( getting the strog body, and then the weapons upgrades - they could do moře with it ) i kinda hope for quake 5
I bought this used just for the included X360 port of Quake 2, but I'll probably play it eventually. Never had any interest in Quake 4 when it was released - I think I was still furious about Quake 3 not having a single player story (a fact that dawned on me AFTER buying and installing it) - but I think I'm finally somewhat calm now... 20years later.

I am probably the few who loved this game, what I loved was the scripted scenes and brief NPC that make you feel like you are not alone. It took another 2 years before Call of Duty 4 turns up and improved scripted FPS and NPC genre. Although the game did drag on too long at some point
Quake 4 was my first arena fps. I loved it
WHAT'S THE NAME OF THESE AMAZING SOUNDTRACKS IN THE BACKGROUND?
Got this for 4 bucks at Big Lots and play it at least once a year. That texture issue patch also makes a big fix to frame rate problems so I highly recommend it.
I like how the hate back then was its a generic fps. Im from that time and I don't know what fps they were playing because the selection wasn't that big. I haven't seen a sifi shooter with this much gore in it anywhere else execpt doom. Whis was also theirs. Can't bunnyhop in campaing= bad. Thats all it is. It plays exactly like the older quakes minus the cocaine
What's thet soundtracks in the back ground?
Played this recently. Really fun game and absolutely did not deserve the hate. Especially loved the level design
Played with ambient lighting for more fos, didn't knew it was this bad.
Whay song playing in the background?
Quake wars enemy territory was the best quake that nobody talks about
I hope raven software will get to make their own game one day. Such a great studio.
Good thing about Quake 4 is introduction of crouch sliding.
Quake 4 was my childhood game one of my favourite games that I ever played
What are the soundtracks used in this video?
I bought this used just for the included X360 port of Quake 2, but I'll probably play it eventually. Never had any interest in Quake 4 when it was released - I think I was still furious about Quake 3 not having a single player story (a fact that dawned on me AFTER buying and installing it) - but I think I'm finally somewhat calm now... 20years later.
I always loved quake 4.
