PLEASE do the Chaos Daemons of Khorne. They're my main army, and it's REALLY difficult finding any quality videos of them on youtube. Usually if you can find them they're lumped in with the other daemons or taken as allies for marines
the lack of durability will be a hard one to cover in order to secure the objectives and stay on them. and as wrapping isn‘t a thing anymore, i hardly see any way to suceed against a heavy firepower army such as ad mech. I am a khotnr (and slaanesh) player myself and i still tryna figure out how to make it work.
I haven't watched the video yet, but last night I asked on your Ork video to make one regarding Custodes. I'm very happy to wake up and see this in my recommended feed. I got into Custodes in 8th as a new player and didn't see a lot of success, but so far I'm glad to hear about all of the improvements they've received.
But they did imply that Brian endorsed the basic (non FW) contemptor even though he wrote nothing directly in support of it and I'm pretty sure he has been very frank about it before 😂 Love this channel
Hey guys, this is probably a bad idea I know, but I’ve had a thought. The knight castellan is still arguably among the most terrifying single shooting models in normal 40k, but it’s easy to take down and is really expensive per wound now. But, what if you used the new custodes shield host strategem to allow a big blob of allarus terminators to soak up the damage. You can stack all those ridiculous defensive buffs on top of that terrifying unit, no re rolls, -1 damage, a cedilla for -1 to hit, only wounding on 4+, and combined with a CP regen, you could very easily make your castellan unkillable. You would also bring some smash bike captains and some small units of bikes to clear hordes and act as charging units. I can only really see this working because your forcing your opponent to shoot at the terminators screening the castellan, while the castellan goes about destroying whatever it wants (because castellan). You can park it far enough back to keep it away from most melee threats, and even if something does get close, the terminators will handle it. It would pretty much take ALL of your CP, but it might well be worth it.
I’ll explain why it’s a bad idea: 1) Units can afford to hide now for a few turns in order to line up the killing strike. 2) You’ll be burning through CP for something that can be dealt with by just targeting the Terminators. Even if you take 6 Terminators to guard, a good shooting army, can viably take that out in one or two turns, while burning all your CP on defensive buffs that might not matter much. Consider Plasma-gun spam, the standard anti-terminator plan. Strength 7 -3AP.. You’ll probably still burn a CP to ignore -2 for everything else, if he has a battle cannon or two. You’re spending 1 CP for the bodyguard strat. You’re spending 2 CP for trans human. All you’re really getting, seeing as plasma guns are more efficient against terminators anyways, (consider Tempestus Scions dropping in) is 4’s instead of 3’s are wounding now, for a whopping 4 CP a turn. You’ve already spent at least one to make the Castellan a character. You’ve spend possibly 3 including a Super Heavy Auxiliary, and possibly 3 more if you’re going to try to MSU with something like Imperial Guard, in order to fence, in which case the Terminator screen is a bit redundant given the inherent toughness of the Castellan. Don’t forget how you can shoot at best profile for one CP! Way more efficient. 3) Points: Overall you’ve already spent well over half your 1850pts, on just two units functionally acting as one, one of which isn’t getting anywhere close to its points value by just being shot at, which leads to point four: 4) Lack of board control. Armies spamming MSU will largely negate Castellan fire power, while wracking up primaries, all while you’re Terminators are just standing around. 5) Extremely vulnerable to the deep strike. If you don’t MSU, all an opponent has to do is whiddle down the terminators before Alpha Striking in turn 3, while burning all your CP, and dominating board control. You’re best bet is a single unit of 3 Guardians with Storm shields, or a single Captain in non-Terminator armor, (11-pts)with the half damage warlord trait, a storm shield, and Victor of the Blood Games, the Captain commander trait that gives him +2 wounds, and a Vexilla standing next to him, with some added fire support, in way of a Telemon. With the Eagle’s Eye, he’s got 9 wounds, a 1-3++ inv. and can still take advantage of Auramite and Adamantium. He can re-roll at least 2 of his invulnerable saves with Victor of the Blood Games, and a CP re-roll. Once he gets down to 1 or 2 wounds, he can hide behind the Telemon, or the Castellan, as long as he doesn’t die that phase, which he shouldn’t. He will be slightly vulnerable to Vindicare assassins. If you do this, let the Castellan take as much damage as possible first. MSU Sisters of Silence, and have a great time...
Honestly you’re better off going with pure Knights. What you would spend on Terminators, you can add a whole combat knight, or a pack of Armigers, with which to pressure the front and functionally soak up fire for the Castellan anyways. Hoping for some great meme material though of a Knight swinging around a shield captain like a tennis racket blocking shots!
What about a cruzader protected with a unit of guards with storm shields and a shield captain? It would be a lot less points and resources but keeping the general idea (I m new to the game so surely I m missing something but it's still sounds like a fun way to play)
I might recommend 2 of the smaller dreadnoughts instead. The telemon is strong, true, but anti-knight tech will be sufficient to remove him. That same tech may struggle against 2 targets from overkill. If you do stick with the telemon, I might also recommend some custodian Guard too. Just in case a Tau gunline smokes your telemon Edit- lol nvm the local Tau guy killed both dreads anyways 😅 maybe a transport?

Hi guys thank you for the video ! my 9th new army will be custodes because i love low body count elites armies ( I play Harlequins and Farsight Enclaves) 9th edition is a great time for elite themed armies ! I think i'll go with full bikes and telemon lists ( 2 Shield captain on bikes , 3x3 vertus praetors and 1 full shoot telemon for a 1500 pts list and 2 Shield captain on bikes , 2x5 and 1x3 vertus praetors and 2x telemon ( 1 full shoot 1 full close) for a 2000 pts list) So i was styuding things up you guys help so much for this . I really love the TELEMON mini , so gorgeous , so powerful and I was thinking of a combo TELEMON with 2x caestus - Dread host - [1CP] Eternal Penitent - [1CP] From Golden light they come - [1CP] golden light of the moraides = thats quite costy but that's a hell of a wrecking ball that will pop out whenever needed and will charge (3D6 with rerolls and discard the lowest) . It's a perfect TOOL OF FEAR just like an harlequin solitary , your adversary knows that he just can't avoid to take the wrecking ball in the face , and that's awesome , the kind of thing that makes him think always twice about every move every unit , until bam , it's up xD plus Vertus praetor have enough shhot to clean up T1 and /or T2 screens units before this monster appears and wrack a big shunk of the adversary army , priceless xD

Pretty late to the video, but I wanted know from others here about a 500pt build I'm thinking of that revolves around the idea of a "Moving Castle" 🏰 strat with the captian general character paried with 2 squads of 3 sagittarum making up a close to 500pt patrol list. And Emissaries Emperatas as the shield host that gives 3" inches to my warlords already 6" aura of rerolling 1s to hit. Making a destructive gun line that only misses on 2s or bad rerolls of 1s. And paired along with the sagittarium is the captian general that can cleave whole units and then bounce to the next enemy target after the first enemy line is blown apart in the shooting phase.
So will a scout still get more attacks than a Custodian? Are we getting Bolter Discipline? Are we getting cheaper (relative to 9th Ed points)? Are unit datasheets improving? If no I don’t think Custodes will be improving much. CP is great, but units are still expensive, not fast, not durable, not great at causing damage.
Thanks for a really great video guys, lots to think about. One thing I wasn't sure about, why do you take your Allarus in squads of six rather than five? I'd have naturally gone with five because I very often want to use Superior Fire Patterns on the turn they drop.
I'm new to 40k tabletop and got my first army as custodes! I know they have a new codex since this video came out. Do people think this video is still useful for learning how to play custodes under their new codex?
I was shocked when I read in the Field Manual (new points thing) that melta spears are now 0 points. So...Custodian guard with free wargear seems pretty sweet! Not a fan of the points increases on the jetbikes but you get decreases on termies as well, so I guess they balance out.
I just started Custodes before the world shut down (with 9 bikes and 9 troop models, wish I would've bought less troops now for patrols), but I am curious about your take on the codex vehicles. I'm not a forgeworld fan, so if I take vehicles, it will be the codex land raider or dreadnought, especially the land raider because I own some unpainted ones from around 10 years ago. I know the land raider for marines stayed the same price while everything else is going up. Have you guys played around with the codex vehicles in 9th, and are they at all worth it? Especially curious about the land raiders, but I've heard in the past you guys say to skip the codex dreads and go for forgeworld, was wondering if codex ones are at all viable. I personally go with indomitable constitution because that just makes your jetbike captain 9 wounds in addition to the auric aquilas, superior creation, and victor of the blood games.
Was that a final list at the end you've played with? Or just models to associate to a list. I've come up with: 2 Captain on bikes (as suggested in video) 6x Allarus Vexillus Magnifica 4 Bikes 2x Telemon (both shoot variants, but points ar the same to swap to 1 fist) The idea being 1 can screen as suggested, and the other can sit on backfield objective and still contribute, while the rest of the army advances. 1749 (without misericordias)
I'm thinking of buying custodes for my first army. I've only played kill team so far (I play harlequins). 40k is an expensive hobby in Mexico so custodes sound like an interesting option.
I do have one question. I own a unit of 6 of both Aquilon and Allarus terminators. What, in your opinions, makes the Allarus the key unit over the Aquilons as I've personally had more success with the Aquilons.
question for you guys. How are you choosing a warlord trait for each matchup? According to the new matchplay rules, all pre-game buffs (including stratagems) must be chosen before you come to the table. Personally I think this is a horrible change, but it’s how the rules work now.
I noticed you only talked about the Allarus terminators. How do you feel about the FW terminators? Also will the FW units be playable in 9th at launch, or will we need to wait for another round of points for them?

I kicked butt with Custodes last edition, before Psychic Awakening. Usually the trick was play the mission. They're durable and close-range killy. Now that I actually have CP, its a whole new game...
I will say I'm fairly new to WH40K and I'm still learning everything. With that said, I've heard when ti comes to Custodes they often where a great army to have Sisters of Silence allied with due to little to no Psychers and the Sisters kind of balancing them out. If I'm incorrect, again I'm new to this. But if the Sisters did help out in this, how does the 9th edition effect that potential relationship?
A fun but less competitive list would involve an Orion with 2x4 Wardens, Trajann and a +1 attack Vex. Clocks in at ±1250pts (currently). Add a few shield boys and Captain(s) on bike(s) and go to town. This claps pretty much every list that is not super competitive (from my experience running this).
Section 14 (16:28 - Captain Generals) should be named "Captain-Commanders". And I'll be giving your advice thought. I've been taking notes to summarize your points for personal use. If I shared those summary notes with a few friends, would that be okay with you or no? I'd direct them to your video as well.
Are the Sisters of Silence good with Custodes right now? I know that they take up Elite slots which are normally used for Terminators and Vexillas, but I was thinking that you could field them in a pure Sisters of Silence Vanguard Detachment since they don't need an HQ when organized that way. I'm mainly asking because I love the Sisters of Silence + Adeptus Custodes lore, and I would love to include them in my army.
I got a question: I'm a new player and I love the FW Venatari models, but I'm hesitant to pick them over the Terminator-Vexilus combo or the Vertus Praetor bikes. Are the Venatari still worth a consideration or are they a waste of points compared to the strong alternatives?
I have a question. I see some changes to 8th edition stratagems, so I assume that we are meant to use only 9th edition strats. But, then I hear TT talking about using 8th edition strats like Victor of the Blood Games ( 18:29 ). So, I'm just a little confused on if we are using 9th edition strats or 8th, or both.
Question: With the change to how Storm Shields work (4+Invul save, +1 to normal save roll), are they even worth taking in Custodes who naturally have a 4+ invul and a 2+ save?
I thought Allarus are deadly. Started collecting the golden boys but still only 3 squads so far (so 100000 points) I see no mention of the wardens, my absolute fav unit of em(so I'm assuming they are a bit less tactful), but I guess since you mentioned tanking up the Vexila I'd use em to buff him. do you think I could manage with only a tank and loads of infantry? or I have to get my hands on a dread\another hover tank

I have a technical question regarding the "Guardian Eternal" rule that the dreadnoughts have -- "Each time an attack is allocated to this model, subtract 1 from the damage characteristic of that attack (to a mininum of 1)." My question is regarding the "attack" --> is it only melee "attacks"? or does it include shooting as well? I hope someone can clear this up for me :-) Thanks in advance!! edit: to clarify, my google-fu was weak and I only found people talking about half damage vs -1 damage and stuff like that, not what "attack" actually meant. But I did try to look up clarification on the web before coming here to pester you with a potentially silly question :-)
Question for those Two Dawneagle Captains you said 7cp. When I do the math it cost 9. Blood games 2 cp Blood games 2cp Open the Vaults 3cp Ten thousand 1cp Captain Commander 1cp That’s 9 cp, am I missing something in the rules or is my math wrong?
Any chance GW has mentioned to you if they will be changing the halving damage strat for the telemon to be the same as marines? I really don't think we deserve the same nerf and am hoping it's here to stay.
I actually had quite a bit of luck just making a list with as many custodes troops as possible backed by a unit of terminators and a vexillia and a pair of captains.
I've tried playing what was known of 9th at the time and I built a deathstar made out of Trajann and a Vexilla flanked by a pair of shooty Telemons. With the extra CP and the Psychic Awakening Strats those two Dreads where just crazy durable and just put very reliable shooting. Also had an eternal penitent Achillus Dread in deepstrike reserve and dropped some Allarus. Was some great fun
@@ryonrobynson in theory, yes. But in application it's different. Its like you asking advise to a pro player vs asking someone who read a book about tactics. If you want strategy focus, I would take a look at Art of War 40k instead. This is good filler 40k entertainment.

your explanation on the terrain LOS is a bit confusing, because according to the rules from 9th BRB, as long as your model is in the terrain or within, then you can been seen and targeted as normally.
Vexilla Imperius gives the +1 attack Aura. Vexilla Defensor gives a 5++ against ranged attacks against friendly Imperium units! It hurts my golden fluffbunny soul to have you mix them up
why is it that no BatRep or analysis for Custodes ever use the Land Raider or regular Contemptor Dreadnought? Its always the Forge World models of tanks and dreadnoughts.
I don't get how we are coming up with 17 CP the start of battle. 12 CP for 2000 pts games, + 1 a turn standard battle forged. Where are they getting the other 4?

Are you allowed to use the Victor of the Blood Games strategem on two different models? I had thought it was maximum one because it is done in the deployment phase and you can't cast two of the same strategems in one phase?

Pretty late to the video, but I wanted know from others here about a 500pt build I'm thinking of that revolves around the idea of a "Moving Castle" 🏰 strat with the captian general character paried with 2 squads of 3 sagittarum making up a close to 500pt patrol list. And Emissaries Emperatas as the shield host that gives 3" inches to my warlords already 6" aura of rerolling 1s to hit. Making a destructive gun line that only misses on 2s or bad rerolls of 1s. And paired along with the sagittarium is the captian general that can cleave whole units and then bounce to the next enemy target after the first enemy line is blown apart in the shooting phase.
I'd love to see yall taking a look at Blood Angels. Your opinions and personal strats for the upcoming 9th.
The Aquilon shield strat is nice for screening the vex

I would say that two bike captains are overkill. One is mandatory but your second one can be anything from Trajan to a stormshield cap
So will a scout still get more attacks than a Custodian? Are we getting Bolter Discipline? Are we getting cheaper (relative to 9th Ed points)? Are unit datasheets improving? If no I don’t think Custodes will be improving much. CP is great, but units are still expensive, not fast, not durable, not great at causing damage.
D3 damage will be the death of us
I don't want custodes to get cheaper, I just want them to get stronger.

One thing I wasn't sure about, why do you take your Allarus in squads of six rather than five? I'd have naturally gone with five because I very often want to use Superior Fire Patterns on the turn they drop.

I'm new to 40k tabletop and got my first army as custodes! I know they have a new codex since this video came out. Do people think this video is still useful for learning how to play custodes under their new codex?
I was shocked when I read in the Field Manual (new points thing) that melta spears are now 0 points. So...Custodian guard with free wargear seems pretty sweet! Not a fan of the points increases on the jetbikes but you get decreases on termies as well, so I guess they balance out.
I just started Custodes before the world shut down (with 9 bikes and 9 troop models, wish I would've bought less troops now for patrols), but I am curious about your take on the codex vehicles. I'm not a forgeworld fan, so if I take vehicles, it will be the codex land raider or dreadnought, especially the land raider because I own some unpainted ones from around 10 years ago. I know the land raider for marines stayed the same price while everything else is going up. Have you guys played around with the codex vehicles in 9th, and are they at all worth it? Especially curious about the land raiders, but I've heard in the past you guys say to skip the codex dreads and go for forgeworld, was wondering if codex ones are at all viable. I personally go with indomitable constitution because that just makes your jetbike captain 9 wounds in addition to the auric aquilas, superior creation, and victor of the blood games.
Was that a final list at the end you've played with? Or just models to associate to a list.
I've come up with:
2 Captain on bikes (as suggested in video)
6x Allarus
Vexillus Magnifica
4 Bikes
2x Telemon (both shoot variants, but points ar the same to swap to 1 fist) The idea being 1 can screen as suggested, and the other can sit on backfield objective and still contribute, while the rest of the army advances.
1749 (without misericordias)
This doesn't fit into any detachment, you'll need at least 1 guard squad to make a patrol.

I'm thinking of buying custodes for my first army. I've only played kill team so far (I play harlequins). 40k is an expensive hobby in Mexico so custodes sound like an interesting option.
Custodes are so fun and relatively cheap to collect :D
I didn't think you could you use the commander trait to farm CP that used before match because his trait says " when he's on the Field"
I do have one question. I own a unit of 6 of both Aquilon and Allarus terminators. What, in your opinions, makes the Allarus the key unit over the Aquilons as I've personally had more success with the Aquilons.
Slayers of Tyrant + Castellan Axe's 2 damage ranged profile would be my guess.
They have more strats that work with them, and are cheaper.
question for you guys. How are you choosing a warlord trait for each matchup? According to the new matchplay rules, all pre-game buffs (including stratagems) must be chosen before you come to the table. Personally I think this is a horrible change, but it’s how the rules work now.
I noticed you only talked about the Allarus terminators. How do you feel about the FW terminators? Also will the FW units be playable in 9th at launch, or will we need to wait for another round of points for them?

I kicked butt with Custodes last edition, before Psychic Awakening. Usually the trick was play the mission. They're durable and close-range killy. Now that I actually have CP, its a whole new game...
I will say I'm fairly new to WH40K and I'm still learning everything. With that said, I've heard when ti comes to Custodes they often where a great army to have Sisters of Silence allied with due to little to no Psychers and the Sisters kind of balancing them out. If I'm incorrect, again I'm new to this. But if the Sisters did help out in this, how does the 9th edition effect that potential relationship?
A fun but less competitive list would involve an Orion with 2x4 Wardens, Trajann and a +1 attack Vex. Clocks in at ±1250pts (currently). Add a few shield boys and Captain(s) on bike(s) and go to town. This claps pretty much every list that is not super competitive (from my experience running this).
I imagine that I’m not alone in saying that I’d love an update version of this for 9th edition endgame.

Are the Sisters of Silence good with Custodes right now? I know that they take up Elite slots which are normally used for Terminators and Vexillas, but I was thinking that you could field them in a pure Sisters of Silence Vanguard Detachment since they don't need an HQ when organized that way.
I'm mainly asking because I love the Sisters of Silence + Adeptus Custodes lore, and I would love to include them in my army.

I got a question: I'm a new player and I love the FW Venatari models, but I'm hesitant to pick them over the Terminator-Vexilus combo or the Vertus Praetor bikes. Are the Venatari still worth a consideration or are they a waste of points compared to the strong alternatives?

I have a question. I see some changes to 8th edition stratagems, so I assume that we are meant to use only 9th edition strats. But, then I hear TT talking about using 8th edition strats like Victor of the Blood Games ( 18:29 ). So, I'm just a little confused on if we are using 9th edition strats or 8th, or both.
Question: With the change to how Storm Shields work (4+Invul save, +1 to normal save roll), are they even worth taking in Custodes who naturally have a 4+ invul and a 2+ save?
Much like the ones on existing marine units, they at least won't change until Custodes get a new codex

I see no mention of the wardens, my absolute fav unit of em(so I'm assuming they are a bit less tactful), but I guess since you mentioned tanking up the Vexila I'd use em to buff him. do you think I could manage with only a tank and loads of infantry? or I have to get my hands on a dread\another hover tank

I have a technical question regarding the "Guardian Eternal" rule that the dreadnoughts have
-- "Each time an attack is allocated to this model, subtract 1 from the damage characteristic of that attack (to a mininum of 1)."
My question is regarding the "attack" --> is it only melee "attacks"? or does it include shooting as well?
I hope someone can clear this up for me :-) Thanks in advance!!
edit: to clarify, my google-fu was weak and I only found people talking about half damage vs -1 damage and stuff like that, not what "attack" actually meant. But I did try to look up clarification on the web before coming here to pester you with a potentially silly question :-)

I actually had quite a bit of luck just making a list with as many custodes troops as possible backed by a unit of terminators and a vexillia and a pair of captains.

Wouldn't flooding the board with Unleashed Lions Alarus dovetail into the MSU/mission oriented playstyle the new missions and edition seem to favor?
I've tried playing what was known of 9th at the time and I built a deathstar made out of Trajann and a Vexilla flanked by a pair of shooty Telemons.
With the extra CP and the Psychic Awakening Strats those two Dreads where just crazy durable and just put very reliable shooting.
Also had an eternal penitent Achillus Dread in deepstrike reserve and dropped some Allarus. Was some great fun
That sounds close to my thinking so good to hear some feedback. I also want to try Venatari more too with the double shooting attack strat.
How are the forgeworld options for Custodian terminators? I love the idea of infernus firepike termies but if they’re bad then fair enough.

@@ryonrobynson in theory, yes. But in application it's different. Its like you asking advise to a pro player vs asking someone who read a book about tactics. If you want strategy focus, I would take a look at Art of War 40k instead. This is good filler 40k entertainment.

your explanation on the terrain LOS is a bit confusing, because according to the rules from 9th BRB, as long as your model is in the terrain or within, then you can been seen and targeted as normally.

Vexilla Imperius gives the +1 attack Aura. Vexilla Defensor gives a 5++ against ranged attacks against friendly Imperium units!

Other strats can be used only once per phase. This would be clarified somewhere in the new rulebook. Just dont know which page
I have a Custodes Army and I was thinking to get a Forge World unit for them. Which one would you guys recommend?
The Calladius is pretty cool, just like the Pallas. The Dreads are also recommended since they got the charge strat in war of spider.
