The TRUTH about living alone in NYC.

  • Do you want to know the honest truth about what it's like living alone in NYC? I talk about what it's really like living in nyc alone (in not the safest neighborhood), what I do to stay safe, how much it costs to live alone in nyc, being lonely in new york city, and just a realistic view of what's its really like. The phrase "everyone should live alone once in their lives" is awesome and everything... but is jam packed with privilege. Living alone in nyc shouldn't be a sacrifice, but it is. So I hope this gives you a good idea on what it's like living in nyc in 2021 (as a woman)!

The quietude of being alone did help me reflect about what I was going through in life. But at the same time, it made me realize the importance of my family and friends.

I’ve been in NYC 3 weeks now and definitely benefited from your videos! Also I naively thought that it would be safe for me, a man, to walk home late at night on a semi busy street even for those hours. Not even 1.5 weeks into living here a man threatened to jump me with his friends if I didn’t pull money out of the ATM for him! I was able to get away without handing over any money or being followed but still, if you’re going home alone late at night, sometimes it’s just safer to fork over the money for an Uber

I just moved to an apt where you can hear people stomping around upstairs and at night I can hear them banging around until very late into the evening. I have promised myself the next place I move to is detached so I do not hear anyone’s noise. I don’t mind noise during the day as people are going about their business but when people are banging around close to or past midnight that irritates me. Have some consideration folks!

I live on Campus at Columbia and I used to be annoyed at how annoying the public safety officers were in my building. They always ask me to swipe ID and show daily covid health checks. But now thinking after this video, I'm thankful because I always know I'm safe and nobody could ever enter my building without living there.

NYC is the only place I've lived where I experienced actual suicidal thoughts. And when there's snow on the ground? Just forget about it tbh. Now I live in Miami and it's like night and day and I don't feel like I'm struggling to survive. The constant sunshine and view of palm trees alone are more uplifting than I ever could've imagined. One city that I really love is Chicago because it has an NYC kind of feel but without that huge competitive/elitism vibe.

PROS for me were walking around naked. lol.....not having to deal with unwanted company.....not having to deal with different thermostat requests.....not having to think of anyone or anyone's feelings about something before doing it....CONS...lonliness as you said, constant fear during the night when something is heard, not having someone immediately to run something by when you actually feel like having someone's opinion, even tho it doesnt count....not having someone to cook when you dont feel like it, not having that automatic company when something impromptu comes up.

I appreciate your comment on "everyone should live alone at least sometime" because you're right, it's not feasible for a lot of people anymore. My dream all through my teens and 20's was to have my own apartment, but with all my student loans that was definitely not possible. My boyfriend and I finally found an apartment that was perfect for us and our corgi (we are in NJ and renting here is tough too) and we are super happy now! Getting to decorate and having quiet space are my favorite parts ^__^

I’ve lived alone for almost all my life and I honestly can’t imagine living with someone else again. Sure it’s nice having someone to be there to talk to and do stuff with, and definitely split the cost of bills, but just the freedom to walk around my apartment naked or put stuff wherever I want is just too much of a plus for me.

I'm living in Hudson County, NJ in an apartment my Mom and I used to rent out. She's my landlord now which makes things pretty awesome. I'm around her so she feels safe and I feel relatively safe with her around even though she's up there in age. My neighborhood is changing rapidly too. Stores are being robbed, people are involved in domestic violence problems with weapons, some try to commit suicide with rifles, and you have drug addicts walking around and stealing vehicles. Luckily, I don't have a vehicle. Though I really do need one at some point in the near future. My rent is discounted too, but I'm responsible for doing repairs since I was doing them as a property manager anyway. I had really bad anxiety the first half of the first year thinking my place would get broken into or I would be followed home, but I'm getting ballsier. If someone is following me, I literally stop walking and just stand there lol It looks "crazy", but it works. The person passes me, and because we're on a busy street, they keep going after I stop walking. I always have my smartphone with me and keep most of my trips within walking distance. Any time, I go far, I take the bus, but I feel safe doing that. The job economy is especially tough right now. So it makes living alone hard, but I know having other people living with me will hike up costs and I'll have zero privacy. I wish my windows were sound proof, because I often wonder if some of the neighbors can hear everything I'm doing in the privacy of my own home. I live in a two story house on the top floor. It's year 2 and I'm getting the hang of it. It feels more natural to me now and I'm a lot more comfortable than I was last year.

This is quite specific, but I'm just moving from living with a roommate to a studio in the city (which is how I found you!), but sadly studio is sans-dishwasher and I had just ordered a 75 pack of dishwasher pods that I need to get off my hands! If you want to briefly relive the lovely subsidization of living costs, happy to pass on since I can't use em!

Hi Chelsea. I live in India and we have solid construction here and this is due to the culture we inherited from the British. They were just very good in everything they did. But I am aware that in many countries and even in high-end hotels one can literally hear evth from the adjacent room. I suppose one has to find their way around this drawback.

So true I lived in NYC most of my life . I was in a apartment with my family and with 4 other apartments on the same floor . I went full ham and went to the south (TN) lol I was over the crowd and the noise . Probably because It’s my family’s choice to stay in the city and I wanted to make my own decisions of how I want my life to be . I’m much happier down South
It is possible to live in NY it just needs a good paying job and around 5,000 net pay to live comfortably at least .

Hey I just started watching your videos a few days ago. I love your vids keep it up! Also I’ve always wanted to try living in NYC I currently live in SoCal ( Southern California) about an hour from LA. It’s hella expensive out here and I just want to go to NYC for all the people and shit to do. For a 1 bedroom it’s usually minimum of 3 grand a month just for rent. So it wouldn’t be a problem going there. So surprised NYC isn’t more expensive than Cali. Anyway thank you for these vids shit is 🔥 🔥🔥🔥

Also if life in NYC is mostly in survival mode, what keeps you there, what goals do you want to achieve that keep you there in NYC?^^

My dad used to work for the police. He told me once that most housebreaking happened on the last floor. Because there are less people who potentially could disturb.
I totally agree about the gut. I will move in a week weeks and this one apartment had me like „Woah!“. Didn’t happened with the other six ones I used to see before.

Does your apartment have an in unit washer and dryer and dishwasher? I’ve heard that for people wanting to move to NY that these are two things that are hard to get for a cheap/reasonable price based on NYC standards! Is this pretty true? Especially for the washer and dryer I would want it to be in unit and not even in the building on a different floor or having to go to a laundromat.
Also is the walkability of NYC something you would say as a main reason a lot of people like living in NYC? Does it ever get annoying having to take public transportation, especially with the subway being unreliable sometimes? With grocery shopping do you have a small rolling cart?

    • @ChelseaCallahan
      @ChelseaCallahan  ปีที่แล้ว +1

I don't have an in unit washer/dryer! usually only the newer/nicer buildings have those, like you said. the walkability is a HUGE pro! the subway is great if you always leave super early and anticipate the delays. I just use bags for shopping but I see people roll around carts
