    🐶 You’re so right about living in New York and having friends - from experience, it’s totally normal (by NYC standards) to have really close friends and only see them ever few months. When everyone is so busy and lives in different boroughs/has different schedules it’s hard to even plan simple things like dinners or going to the movies. It’s so different from smaller European cities where you can finish a workday, eat dinner, and still have time to stop by a friend’s house to hang out…

    This is the most mature and intelligent video testimony about living in NYC that I watched in a very long time. I have been dreaming of living in NYC since 1989 ... I did have other experiences and move across the world, no regrets, just need to hear the harsh truth about NYC...so sad that one of the best city in the world has come to all this.

      if you want to move to nyc and can afford it you should. listen to stories but like any other city you know how to keep yourself safe. ive been here for over 20 years and im a girl and i dont have any issues and im out at 3am sometimes.

      I would suggest you have a pied-à-terre NYC residence, rather than live there full-time. Or just go for a month and rent an AirBnB, for the experience you’re seeking, just got in eyes wide open and your head on a swivel.

    Hi Joy, I have lived in NYC for over 40+ years (native) and know a lot of ppl, related and not, experienced more than most and I know you made the right decision, if I left, I wouldn’t look back from my experience living here, just to visit that’s all, everything you said is spot on, NYC has become Very OVERATED!!!

    Really good video! 🐶 NYC has always been scary, every trip I always had a bad experience on the subway (long before the pandemic). Crime has really gotten bad all over North America. I hope there’s a more positive shift in energy coming. More videos with Brody please! 🐶

    Hey Joy thank you so much for your story, I moved out of NY in end of 2019 and was luckily to avoid the covid and Asian hate things afterwards. But I've always miss the time living in the big Apple just because of the diversity and tons of things to do. After saw the quote you shared, I believe I actually have more options to make me feel happy rather than just thinking about living in the greatest city in the world!

    • @joymae

      Thank you and it’s exactly true focus on how you feel instead of how your life looks. I had a great time in the city until it no longer was serving me. It’s still a great place but not in the phase of my life at the moment.

    Hi Joy, thank you for your honest account of NYC. I recently visited for the first time from Australia. Can I say I hated New York. I felt uneasy the whole time I was there. The loud sounds, the people were not friendly, social problems everywhere, weed smell everywhere and the divide between rich and poor was terrible. As a little girl I thought the big apple was the place to be. Unfortunately, it’s all smoke and mirrors. I hope the city can turn itself around and solve its homeless problems and help the mentally ill that need help.

    • @joymae
      @joymae  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I can see that. The divide is very wide between the rich and poor and it's sad.

    met all my friends through work, hobbies and my neighborhood in Brooklyn. Making friends was the easiest for me in NY. Left 3 years ago and making friends out of a city is way harder in my opinion especially since more people are married and have families out of the city. I was there 10 years though, I think like anywhere you live consistency and investment where you are is what will generator longterm friends.

    I know how you feel, living in SF the homeless problem is out of control. One guy was following me and he started chasing me and throwing a HUGE rock towards my head.
    And people saw him but just looked away because it happens ALL the time.
    He could have killed me just because he's paranoid. I'm scared a lot now.

    • @joymae
      @joymae  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Omgosh I’m so sorry. I was driving through SF last month and a homeless man biked up next to my car and started making circles around me at the red light. I was scared he’d break my window and assault me. They’re crazy out there.

    I'm really sorry about the Asian hate. I'll never understand why or how people can hate (or even dislike) another person based upon their race, religion, etc. It makes zero sense to me. Thank you for speaking up about how unsafe NYC has become. I love NYC & used to go down there for a long weekend all the time, but I've not been there since March of 2020. It really saddens me because it was my favorite place, but being acquainted with people "in the know", the crime has gone back to the pre-Giuliani era & I don't know if it'll ever recover. Best of luck to you in your new life & I look forward to seeing where it takes you.

    Preaching to the choir!!!!! Even when I'm on work trips out of state depending on the area sometimes I would spend $20-$25 just to go get something to eat and come back to the Hotel and that would be on just rides so it definitely adds up, Over time I've decided to factor In the per diem that my company gives me a day and I wont spend over that on food.

    I met my NYC friends organically, through other friends. This was back in 2006 to 2014 and gave S*x and the City vibes. Was fun for the time in my life I was in.
    Now that I’m in my 30’s, I have a handful of friends (just much more discerning) and focused on creating generational wealth for the next generations. The “It” girl lifestyle doesn’t align with that for me.

My friend group got huge! Then various different friends moved to NYC and I met their friend groups etc👍

    "Unless you grew up in a town outside of the city" then having a friend group is possible...Must I say POSSIBLE but NOT probable. I grew up in long island all my life and by the time I moved out at 28, I did not have a single friend group to claim. Not that I never had any but people grow apart and you are constantly changing. It really is hard to break into new people there.

    You made a great decision based on solid valid reasons. If you can live in NYC you can live anywhere and be successful. Too many sacrifices to live here--but safety should never be one of those sacrifices. Brooklyn has become just as expensive if not more unreasonable. You would never be able to invest and/or buy a home down the road.

    I feel there is nowhere left to live in NYC who wants to go to Orange County or South Jersey. the northeast is very expensive. I have to start work very early in the morning. the mental push it takes to walk to the subway sucks. safety is the main reason I get anxiety. and it is expensive to take Uber or Lyft daily. the friend group part is so funny. I always assume they work from home or they meet all of their friends online. It does feel my closest friends live out of state.
