    Yes, we’re hanging out in my bathtub for this video (there was noise outside and the bathroom happened to be soundproof haha). I think it’s pretty cozy though!
    Friendly disclaimer: I would love for you to share your opinion on this video topic, of course, but please refrain from trying to poop on everyone’s party if that’s your only intention since it’s just not constructive :) We know it’s expensive here and that our rent is more than your mortgage. Also, my math in the budget section was… questionable… the whole thing is a guesstimate anyways, so plz go easy on me haha. Okay thanks I hope you enjoy the videooo!

      People can use a calculator or chatgbt if they want to figure out their budget. It's your human, lived experience that's the draw of your videos! The value of seeing a real person making it happen in NYC is ineffable.

    I'm a lifelong New Yorker, and though I went straight from living with my parents to living with my partner, I agree with everything you said about NYC life. One tip I would give about moving here alone is to join some group activities to meet new people so you feel less alone - whether it's salsa dancing, rock climbing, improv, etc. :) It's hard to make lasting relationships just drinking at bars.

    I lived alone for a few years in the Seattle area before I got married. I love my husband dearly, but I sometimes miss having my own space. Getting to do what you want when you want, keeping your space to your own style, I think everyone should experience it once in their life. It builds character!

    LOVE the discussion regarding safety. People often forget it is a personal metric and that many of the "dangerous neighborhoods" aren't actually inherently super dangerous- how you carry yourself and how you take precautions can make a big difference. I am moving to my own big city soon, Toronto, and I have found your videos very comforting. Thank you for this channel, Chelsea.

    In short it costs a lot of money to be alive. You have to work a lot to just survive and then if you’re lucky enough to have a really good job that pays a lot then you can truly live life the way its meant to be. You have to admit that its really sad that even if you do have a full time job, the odds of being able to live without roommates is really low and thats not just in NYC, but in any major city in the US. This stuff should really be taught in high school and college. No one really knows this stuff when they should be learning it and when it would be most beneficial to learn it.

    I lived alone for two years in Berlin/Germany and everything you mention seems to be the same in those big cities. I was never afraid (I avoided the night life), but I felt lonely sometimes. Not to share my daily impressions at work and in the city made me sad some days. But the I took my bike, cruised around, had a coffee and watched people on the streets. I collected business cards of shops and restaurants, started scrappbooks and made my own city map (this was before iPads and Google maps😂)…one day I felt like I owned Berlin. This city was always good to me. After two years I moved back to my small hometown because of my job. But I remember those two years with pride, I wenn out of my comfort zone and I made it.

    This was very insightful AND well edited and shot! I am looking to move to New York soon and I really appreciate the messages here. I feel like a lot of the videos I watch are too tailored towards the creator's own experiences and beliefs about moving to NY. I love how you gave some examples from your experience; however, your experiences/examples you gave never took the forefront of whether or not you should live alone or not. There was always optimism and inclusivity for other people who may not have the same exp as you. Great video!

    I live in Melbourne Australia. I'm 45 and lived on my own since 2010 and have now bought my own 1 bedroom unit - though to afford this I had to move out about 40km from Melbourne CBD but I mostly WFH and my office is local. I will say though if you're someone who doesn't want kids and don't follow the traditional relationship escalator once you live on your own you'll never share with anyone ever again - I know I won't I LOVE solo living but yes it's expensive and great breakdown of the budget considerations but if you can afford it it's so worth it.

    i dont live in nyc, but I live alone in a midwestern city (MUCH more affordable than nyc lol, my rent for a 1bed is only $725) and especially as someone who is quite introverted and enjoys spending time alone, designing my home the exact way *i* want it to look, and knowing I can use my space however I want whenever I want is so deeply important to me. I know cost, safety, introversion/extroversion etc are concerns that vary from person to person, but I genuinely really think living alone in a metropolitan area is one of the most worthwhile experiences you can have If you can afford it. Especially as a woman, it’s so empowering to be out there doing your own thing independently. Frankly, there is SO much propaganda about how cities are *SO* dangerous for women and yes, obviously you need to be aware of where you are and be on alert, but the notion that cities are super dangerous all of the time is just bullshit (newsflash, statistically you’re much more likely to be victimized by a family member or Romantic partner than a random stranger on the street) and the pros VASTLY outweigh the cons. It really makes you realize how much you can do on your own and how you don’t have to just settle down, get married, and move to the suburbs if that isn’t what you want out of your life! If you’re a woman reading this and considering living alone, I can’t recommend it enough!
    thanks for your content Chelsea! I hope one day I can move to nyc but in the meantime I’ll continue living vicariously through you!

      @Samantha-sk1jq ปีที่แล้ว

      @@henryjoshual1848 yep, absolutely true lol! rent prices have risen a crazy amount just in the 4 years that i've been living here, my previous apartment was only $600/month and my current place is a few hundred dollars less than what similar places are going for in my neighborhood. just going to make the most of it before my landlord realizes she could be charging more!

    • @Samantha-sk1jq
      @Samantha-sk1jq ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheGreatWasian_ no, not chicago! however i am from the chicago area originally and people i know love it there! but chicago is definitely a lot more expensive than where i live but i would say it's definitely more affordable than nyc or boston (depending, of course, on what neighborhood you want to live in). you might also consider looking at cleveland! it's relatively affordable and i think it's a super cool city. plus being on the lake is a huge bonus!

    New York is not worth my mental health to be there. I’d never live in the shi t holes they offer for 4,000.00. There’s other cities to live in with better housing and living conditions. Don’t get me wrong I like NY but I want to live my way. We only get one chance at life. No dress rehearsal. I worked hard. I lived in IL, California, Florida and now Arizona. NY was only to visit for me. Good luck. Loads of people give up a lot to live there 💕 I’ve lived alone my whole life since 17. Now going to be 68. Got married at 29. Had two babies. Got divorced 14.5 years into it. Been living alone since. I’m proud of you. You will do great things

But the way I save is I bought my phone and it was $300 from an online website, I have no health insurance, I bought my car in full $6,500, I have no subscription’s except Spotify duo ($6.50). Before you move into a place, PLEASE check the national sex offender registry. It’s free, available online, and shows you all offenders in the area and what they’re on the registry for. The last thing I’d want is for a woman alone to move next door to an offender and not know it.
    When you go out, text someone where you’re heading and who you are meeting there. Worst case scenario you go missing, if you live alone, who is going to notice you’re gone? Your employer? They won’t be as interested in finding you as a loved one, so make sure a trusted person knows your routine.
    Be very careful about who you tell about living alone. A lot of robberies and home invasions are inside jobs. If a nefarious person knows you live alone, you’re a target. For safety’s sake, just say you’re living with someone.
    A lot of people moving to the city are so eager to get boots on the ground that they fail to account for their safety, and get into trouble. Please be safe, everyone!

      For a adult that's way over the top texting someone everytime you go out haha. Now if you have a stalker or crazy pestering ex then that's a different story!
      Obviously your not going to tell a stranger your address, simple common sense. But you can't live like a hermit being scared all the time, life is for living enjoying your time on the earth.
      And Manhattan (majority of it) is one of the safest areas in the world. I'm visiting NYC in September staying in Manhattan. I'm certainly going to enjoy it 🗽

    Everyone should budget a savings/investment account. If you don’t, you will not see any savings at all.
    I lived 6 years in a studio apartment in Queens on my own, fabulous times. I paid $550 a month in 1991. 😂 those were the days. Then, I had enough to pay for an apartment further into Queens, because I saved and invested and purchased during a buyer’s market❤.
    Timing is everything, I was very lucky the market was on my side. Save up so you too can take advantage of the market when the time comes. The housing market will crash/adjust soon. Have your money ready.

    You are becoming so professional in your videos. Really enjoyable watch and content. Love how you manage to make half of it very erotic. Planning to make more money is a good thing to do - study to take on a professional role where the general public are excluded from applying. A saving thing I would recommend is when you have a spare $500, buy shares, major companies with good dividends. Time is money so try not to take roles where you are always busy but broke. We are in a capitalist state and try not to be fodder. Anyway, you're doing great.

    The minimum requirement of 40-times the rent is really keeping alot of hard working people from being able to afford a decent apartment in a good area. And that doesn't even include the fact that the rent increases every year make it even harder. I encourage people to get away from Manhattan and look in the southern Brooklyn area. You definitely get better apartments for the money. Your commute for the subway might be a bit longer but to me its worth it. I live alone, I'm too old to do the roommate thing. Basically its about being thrifty and changing your mindset.

    Living alone (and having the means to) is such a privilege, regardless of whatever city/town you're in. I've lived alone since the age of 17 (early 1990s) with the exception of when I had roommates, lived with boyfriends, or when I was married. Living alone helps to build character - like you said, to know that you can provide for yourself - is something to be cherished. It helps you to learn about yourself through financial stress, loneliness, anxiety... Women really have only lived alone (with social acceptance) for not even 100 yrs, but if it's something your heart yearns for - do your research, prepare, and go for it! Thank you so much for sharing your experience and helping other young people navigate their way around their choices and decision making! I wish I had your TH-cam video to watch when I was first moving out on my own .... but we didn't have TH-cam in the 1990s!🤣

    I moved to NYC in my early 20s, and now I’m in my 40s. I started with roommates and then lived alone. In my late 20s I put aside a percentage of my paycheck into a separate account that I ignored. Eventually that money grew to invest into a stock market portfolio. And when the real estate market was right I used that money for a down payment to buy my own place. Sold my first place and made over $100k, to then upgrade to a larger space. So my advice is to save and keep your eye on the market.

    I live near London, UK. Av salary here in the UK is 27k per year which is around £1,800 per month (after tax). Flats in and around London are extremely expensive (ranging from £1000 to 2-3000 per month) plus cost of water, gas etc . Young people here rent rooms because no one can afford a place on their own

      If you don't mind a longer commute by subway I highly recommend to anyone moving here to look further away from the city. I moved here in July and I sacrificed having a 40min commute for a quiet, safe neighborhood, a very spacious apartment with free street parking at a reasonable rent price.

    Im 23 and Just got accepted into nursing school🙏❤️. After 1 year of school I could move to NYC and a salary for the job I want is $80,000 - $90,000 . I know people make more but i think that salary could get me started in the city and smaller boroughs like brooklyn , astoria , queens and stuff like that .

    The problem is that people come here from out of town and they accept whatever garbage is thrown at them. They will pay anything just to live in NYC - instead of demanding quality for a reasonable price because agents know they can get the next person whose self esteem is so low that they will pay anything to just say they live in NYC. People who move here should become involved in affordable housng organizations that keep rents down and prices reasonable but we have two generations of people who just put up with what is offered them because they are just too busy or lazy or both to contribute to working class society which is the majority.

    Thanks for the awesome video, Chelsea! Although I don't live in NYC, I live in a big city and agree with a lot of the things you've said. I'm currently living with a roommate, but I sometimes do want to live alone. I know I could do so if I invested more money, but at the same time, I feel like I would get lonely without company. We may not be best friends, but we still go out for brunch or activities sometimes. Some of my roommates in the past have become my best friends too. However, I know this will not last forever. I feel like it's okay to live with roommates and live alone at some point in your life. Both experiences are different and have pros and cons, but either way will definitely help you. Good luck with your apartment hunting!

    I’m a 37 year old and moved to a new to me city to live by myself that’s definitely not nyc. I don’t live in the best neighborhood but it’s the best one I’ve lived in I think. It’s nice to be on my own and structure my time and day as I see fit. It’s also really satisfying to be able to support myself financially, emotionally, whatever. I don’t think my life as it is would have been possible if I didn’t work so hard on my education and I gotta give a high five to my past self for taking that opportunity as far as I could go with it.

    I live in San Francisco and it's pretty similar. I spend so much on food and transportation!
    However, there is a lot of help that the city offers for low income. I was able to live in an SRO which is a single room occupancy, and it sucks. But, I only paid 30% of my income. If you have the stomach to live with other people but save money in order to get your own place I would.

  • @michaelscottcutler3627
    @michaelscottcutler3627 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    It can be done much cheaper, though. Or at least it could be 23 years ago when I moved to the UWS. I moved into a rent stabilized SRO building and I'm still paying the same rent I did when first getting my studio apartment - $1,011.00 a month. It includes all utilities. I wash my clothes in the sink and when I eat out, that means buying a Gyros and fries at a street kiosk. My WiFi/phone bill is about $34.00 a month. I scavenge and rebuild all of my computers. I don't own or even want a cell phone. I haven't watched television since moving here and don't miss it. I don't use Uber. I walk miles or take a bus. I suppose it just depends on what you feel is adequate to fill your needs and provide happiness.

    I don't think its worth it. Fine for the experience for a couple of years if you've never lived in a big city before but unless you're earning $100k+ then pouring all that money away that doesn't set you up for the future. Living by yourself in a major city is REALLY expensive as everything land's on your own shoulders.

    I’ve lived in NY (Brooklyn) most of my life but never alone. My family owns property and we all have our own space so sometimes it can be like living alone but when I want to be around people, I just go upstairs.
    It’s always so interesting seeing other people’s experiences in the same place and how interesting it is that every experience can be so different. I had no idea that rent was so expensive though. I definitely don’t think I could live in my own city alone and still have a life and that’s pretty crazy.

    Finding this as someone who lives in Dallas alone and I think some of this advice is SO RELEVANT and helpful even if NYC isn’t where you’re looking to live solo.
    The quiet/stillness/peace I experience living alone is precious to me but also know that for some folks that quiet/solitude is a huge turn off. It’s good to do those thought exercises of like, ok, I’m settled, it’s 8pm, I’m alone, how do I feel? Congrats on being able to provide this for yourself. I know I am so proud (and lucky and privileged) to be able to do this for myself and don’t take if for granted for a second!!
