  • Climbing behind the wheel of a vintage SUV is one thing, but getting the chance to then drive the current generation of the SUV is another. I examine how much has changed in the last 50 years with a 1967 Nissan Patrol and a 2017 Nissan Armada.

The 67 Patrol was the first car that I purchased new. With my being a cave explorer it saw a lot of off road miles, including a lot of them up rivers not just across. Mine came with a water sealed ignition and aircraft plugs. It also came with a crank which was handy on more than one occasion. Some Chevy parts fit. I had it for about eight years and sold it for $400.00 less than it cost me new.

I’m going to become a modern & classic 4x4 enthusiast for this.
Not just the Toyota Land Cruiser, and the Nissan Patrol/Armada.
Just all of them like the Land cruiser Prado, the Lada Niva, the Mitsubishi Pajero and the Pajero sport (Which was called the Shogun in Britain, and the Montero in America), and the 70 series Land cruiser in Australia & East Asia.

I had a 1967 Nissan Patrol same color, everything. By the way they had a straight 6 not a V6, a slip of the tongue I'm sure. It was a very strong vehicle, definitely made for off road, not the comforts of modern 4x4s. I would probably still be driving it today, but it got very hard to get parts here in the states, and they , as I recall had a hard time coming up with smog controls. I eventually went to Toyota land cruisers (fj40), both my wife and I had one. We now have a 2003 Toyota 4Runner sports limited with a V8. We use it everyday and also take it on off road excursions. It handles off road as well as the Patrol, with the exception of ground clearance, Automatic Trans, Air conditioning, a longer wheel base, power everything, less rattles, well you know, a lot more comfort and gets you there and back no problem.
The Land Cruiser and Patrol were like clones of each other in handling off road. I'd love to take one more ride and hear the gears working in low range.

Hmmm, bit unfair comparing vehicles with a 50 year age difference. I have driven a 50 year old Nissan. I own one. I also have a 2 year old Kluger/Highlander. The difference? In the 50 year old vehicle I knew exactly what was happening in relation to the vehicle and the road. In the 2 year old vehicle? I had no idea until it was too late and I had to rescue my mate who had got himself in trouble. Then I found out. Badly.

Compared to other countries such as U.S or some south American countries, very very fewer vintage Patrols have been seen here in Japan because most of them were manufactured to sell oversea in the past.
So, some enthusiasts are buying them from oversea by themselves.

First Nissan Patrols were imported to Colombia early 60's. Tough enduring very reliavale. IN early 80's I understand there stated being built in Spain.

Thank you for posting this for the sake of the Patrol fans out there. I would have preferred a review/comparison done by someone who actually knows about these vehicles, or about cars in general. V6 LMAO...come on man. Even your take on how difficult the older cars are to drive sounds complainy and uninformed. 12:16 "with so many dirt roads back in the day..." in 1967??? Are you a used car salesman? Sounds like a bunch of BS to me.
