Sawbones is slang for a doctor or surgeon. Family tradition is referencing his father Hank Williams Sr. who abused alcohol and drugs, died at the early age of 29. So, Hank Jr grew up without his father and also ended up battling his demons with alcohol and drugs because as a child he was pressured to be his daddy's replacement.

Slick could mean city slicker that doesn’t understand the country life of men like Hank Williams Sr. or Hank Jr.
Saw bones is a name for a doctor. Think civil war era doctor where arm and leg injuries often meant the doc would saw off the injured limb.

in star trek, this is why the enterprise physician’s nickname is “bones” mccoy.
i think the city slicker imagery in this case is an oblique way of calling out the suits in the nashville industry, who are the ones who “disowned” hank jr., waylon, willie, david allen coe etc.
another layer to the song for me is how canonizing someone (e.g. hank sr.) means airbrushing inconvenient details out of the image (hank sr.’s struggles with substance abuse). so it’s a contest between two versions of history: hank sr. the sanitized nashville commodity & hank sr. the messy individual.
hank sr. had a few songs with “blues” in the tile (e.g. lovesick blues), but musically is very much in the genre of country/bluegrass. hank jr. was influenced musically by blues & other genres, which in nashville was heresy similar to bob dylan going electric. (the grand ole’ opry didn’t allow drums until the 1940’s) so in this song when hank jr. refers to his dad’s music as the blues, that was a pretty loaded lyric-i.e., dad wasn’t as generically pure as nashville wants to make him out to be.

You gotta know that his daddy was a alcoholic country star Who died in the backseat of a limo on his way to a concert, for this song to really hit home.

People have him tons of grief over singing HIS songs instead of being the second coming off Hank Sr. He had been groomed by his mother to sing exactly like his father using all his dad's mannerisms and vocal inflections from the time he was 8. When he started doing his own music and a little rock and roll, he WAS a teenager in the early-mid 60s, crowds started turning on him. In his 20s he made a decision to do music HIS way and if nobody liked it, fine, he wasn't going to change. Listen to "Feeling Better", "Stoned at the Jukebox" from that time period. It's a history lesson. Also a little later, "Born to Boogie". You'll get an idea of who he is and what he's been through.

He literally fell off a mountain in 1973 and got really messed up should have died but he came back stronger and drunker than ever but his early to mid 80's country songs really launched his career, he was able to come out of his daddy's shawdow and created an all new country theme that hard working and drinking people related to and his songs about his life that he really lived were wild and rambunctious and people just fell in love with him, except for the older more traditional country lovers that wanted to hear him sing like his daddy did but like he said he went a different direction and made countless hits I was a teenager in the early 90's and all my friends knew every Hank Jr song by ❤

"Slick" stands for a well dressed snob. In 1973, Hank Jr fell down a mountain and almost died. He fractured the bones in his face, busted some ribs, and had multiple surgeries to rebuild his body. That's the reason he wears the hat, glasses and beard to cover the scars.

  • @JohnMiller-zn9pf
    @JohnMiller-zn9pf 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

"An ol' slick" was referring to the label producers of the day with hair slicked back with Tonic or other hair product. "Sawbones, leave me alone" the doctors he talked to after he O.D. in Denver. doctors were called that, especially in the south, due to using Bone saws to cut off limbs during the Civil War.

  • @kodypowell3206

The best part about the entire song is that the whole thing is a double entendre the way that he mentions he changed his direction from the traditional way of singing country music to be groomed and polished and well behaved and took after his father who which was an alcoholic and changed the way that people perceived him and saying If i get stoned and sing all night long it’s just a family tradition was a hint at the way his father acted while he was influenced by alcohol and the drugs that he were taking for his chronic back pain

So cool that you are getting into Hank Jr. Son of perhaps the most loved country star ever, he was on the road to just clone his father.
But in the 70's (particularly with the album Hank Williams Jr and Friends) he broke out and freed himself from conventional country and melded rock, blues and hard country to tell HIS story which is every bit as exciting and tragic as his Dad's.
If I may suggest, watch the movie "Living Proof" and you will be amazed (no spoilers)!

Sawbones, am old term for doctor, if I’m not mistaken it was later shortened to just bones, like they called the doctor in Star Trek. Slick... o think he’s talking about a music exec. Not long before this country music was almost squeaky clean. Then along cane the outlaw era of country music, wAylon, Willie, kris, and a bunch of others. Hank Williams junior can be listed as a part of that crowd. Just like people today say country ain’t what it used to be... the generation before the outlaw era said the same thing. This was basically Hank’s eff you to the country music industry who were trying to “keep him in line”. He and several other artists became what was unofficially known as “outlaw country” because you were just as likely to see their names in a police blotter as in a music publication. The term “old slick” refers to a guy who has slicked down his hair and fancied himself up, similar to a “city slicker”. Giving “friction” is as you surmised, not necessarily fighting, but criticism or the giving of a hard time. “Sawbones” is an old fashioned slang word for a doctor (I.e. someone who saws bones). Language was so much fun back then.

"Some old slick's trying to give me correction" Slick is sometimes used in short for "city slicker" but is commonly used to describe someone who thinks they're slick, or better than everyone else. Nowadays we call those folks entitled brats or douchebags. Slicks are generally openly assholes and pretty open with their belief that they know better for everyone else, despite not even being willing to learn about the lifestyles or choices of others.

In the context of the song, I always thought 'slick' leaned towards the definition of hackneyed or unoriginal.
Sawbones is an old term for a doctor or surgeon. Before antibiotics, it was common for limbs to be sawn off if an infection was a threat. Gangrene could spread and kill a person much more easily. So, they'd just saw the limb off, going through the bone.

I have no clue what happened in 1973, but in 75, he was mountain climbing and fell 500 feet. Most thought he wasn't going to survive, but by the grace of God, he did.
During the fall he suffered several skull fractures and other head trauma and he had to undergo numerous surgeries and plastic surgery. That is why to this day he has a beard and always wears sunglasses. Be started that style after he recovered.

His Father nicknmed the young man that was his last driver. The young driver was from Sorebone Alabama. Hank Sr called him saw bones. Thats were Hank Jr got that expression is his daddy gave it to the boy whom drove him on his last ride before he passed in the back of his car.

Back story. Hank Sr was a famous country singer. Williams Sr. was born with a mild undiagnosed case of spina bifida occulta, a disorder of the spinal column, which gave him lifelong pain-a factor in his later abuse of alcohol and other drugs. In 1951, Williams fell during a hunting trip in Tennessee, reactivating his old back pains and causing him to be dependent on alcohol and prescription drugs. He passed away at 29 years old in his car on way to a show. HANK Jr Back Story::::: Aug 1975. While Williams Jr. was hiking up Ajax Peak, the snow beneath him collapsed, causing him to fall about 440 feet. The artist was not initially expected to survive, but he did, and he spent more than two years recovering from the incident. He had numerous skull fractures and had multiple surgeries to repair them; the scars led Williams Jr. to grow a beard and wear sunglasses -- a look he's maintained. throughout his career.

You should do a double reaction to Hank Sr and Hank Jr doing their own versions of "House of Gold" "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" or "Kaw Liga".

For a different side or take on the same idea try his song "Shadow Face" where he more or less sings his life story.

The best is to listen to this song in a local dive bar or honky tonk, because only then will you hear an experience the 'secondary chorus' (i.e. drunken patron sing-a-long), which is h*lla lot of fun in it's own right..

Whenever this song comes on in the bar or a large gathering, when it says Why do you drink & the whole crowd screams to drunk. When he says why do you smoke, the people all yell, to get stoned. When he sings why must you live out the songs that you wrote & the crowd screams to get laid!! Without fail!! It's pretty fun!

In 1973 he fell off a mountain and survived. sawbones used to be a common nickname for a doctor. To hear a different side of Hank Jr. your next reaction of him should be Major Moves. It is my favorite song of his.

Sawbones is a slang name for surgeon. It comes from just after the War between the States. Battle field surgery was fast and dirty. They would see 50 people in dire conditions. It was faster to use the saw and in the long run they saved more lives. Rocking Randal fell off cliff in 1973.

On August 8, 1975, Williams was nearly killed in a mountain-climbing accident in southwestern Montana. While climbing Ajax Peak on the continental divide (Idaho border) west of Jackson, the snow beneath him collapsed and he fell almost 500 feet (150 m) onto rock; he suffered multiple skull and facial fractures.[The incident was chronicled in the semi-autobiographical, made-for-television film Living Proof: The Hank Williams Jr. Story. He spent two years in recovery, having several reconstructive surgeries in addition to having to learn to talk and sing again. To hide the scars and the disfigurement from the accident, Williams grew a beard and began wearing sunglasses and a cowboy hat. The beard, hat, and sunglasses have since become his signature look, and he is rarely seen without them.

Being a live performance I'm surprised the crowd wasn't doing the sing along part. "Why do you drink?" To get drunk , "why do you role smoke?" To get high , "why do you live out the songs that you wrote?" To get laid

Sounds like a pretty early version. I'd guess that the song hadn't really taken off yet when this was recorded. But that's just a guess

I believe he is using "Ol' Slick" to mean what we might call a "Suit," a boss, an executive in the music industry. His mother, Miss Audrey, was a real piece of work and pushed him on stage from a young age (like 8) until he was 18 to play his father's songs to keep Hank, Sr.'s memory alive (as if anyone would forget Hank, Sr.) Johnny Cash tried to talk her into backing off and letting Jr. play his own music. At 18 he fired his mother as manager and tried to do his own songs but would get booed off the stage when he did. As far as the ladies/whiskey he tried to commit suicide by taking a bottle of pills. After that he tried to straighten up some, he went to Montana at one point and while hiking fell off a mountain some 500 feet. Broke every bone in his face among other things, it even tore off his nose and left his brain partially exposed. It was bad, way bad. Everyone feared he would follow in his father's footsteps and die (Hank, Sr. was addicted to alcohol and pain killers and died from that concoction while sleeping in the backseat of his car being driven to Ohio for a concert at the age of 29). Johnny and June Cash rushed to the hospital to stay by Hank, Jr.'s bedside, he talks about it in Ken Burns' "Country Music" documentary. Hank, Jr. also attributed his newfound fame by singing his own songs to Waylon Jennings who took him on the road and had him perform at Waylon's concerts because people would respect Waylon backing Hank, Jr.s music.

Hank Sr. was a huge influence on Country Music... so Hank Jr. had to fight his mother and tradition to become himself .. an old timer who is trying to tell him to be more like his dad. Seen him live at least 3x maybe more .. but it was always a party in Pine Knob, MI. Oh yeah he fell off a mountain and almost died .. saw bones is a doctor...
