Travel a lot, like twice a month? Reserve. Travel once or twice a year? Preferred. Use cards purely for protections? Reserved. Use the cards strictly for travel partners? Prefered.
Really great guide and super simple with this comment! And the best part is that if anyone is not sure about these questions, they can just get the Preferred and then reevaluate after a year and upgrade to the Reserve if they want all the extra stuff or travel more
The Preferred is going to bring a lot of value to most everyday regular normies like myself. If you have an abover average spending rate--paroticularly on travel--the reserve may be a better option. Either way both cards are metal, so that's a massive benefit. Great video!
Yeah I think that for maybe 75% of people or even more who just what a cheap but solid card with good benefits and features related to travel - then the CSP is the way to go! I love the metal finish too haha. My CSP was my first metal card and I thought that was the coolest thing when I got it!
@@h3artands0uLL that's a good question. A metal card indicates the card is elite (such as the AMEX Platinum) and is of higher status then a normie plastic card. You will know for sure that your better than everyone else cuz you have a wallet full of metal, not plastic.
@@achavez78 I mean I don’t want to be better than people per say, but it’s helpful to know the card is seen as elite. Definitely the CSR has more value for me because I live in NYC and frequently take Lyft rides to commute to work. That 10 pts for each Lyft ride has easily been my driving engine to my chase trifecta along CFF & CFU which all together has massively boosts my Chase Ultimate Reward.
That's huge for you if you're using Lyft a lot with the CSR! It definitely makes sense in a big city like that. Love to see the Chase Trifecta as well to get the most out of Chase!

I have the Chase Sapphire Preferred now and I’ve been contemplating to upgrade to the reserve! My wife and I want to travel more but I can’t get over the $550 a year price. This video was great!
This was a very well executed video. I think everyone should do credit card comparisons like this. This takes into account how the average person might spend. And is very easy to understand for dummies like me. Thank you for taking the time to do this
I appreciate you pointing out the option of upgrading or downgrading to other chase cards and still be able use the points balance . Thats definitely has made my decision making easier . Thank you for the inputs .
I have the CSP and I find it a more usable everyday card. Living in a major city I love the multipliers on my everyday spending from coffee in the morning to riding the subway, dining, taxi/uber etc. It's a great card that I can easily justify the AF. This is great vid as always Daniel💥
Thanks so much as always for watching, glad to liked it! Yeah I agree, especially for you living in a city - the CSP really has a lot of ways to earn points and then the redemption features are great as well!
Terrific job Danny!!! The CSP is perfect for me. The welcome bonus was perfect last year (100K points, plus no annual fee in the first year), the transfer partners are great (especially Hyatt), and for the occasional traveler, coupled with a Freedom card, it's a great combination. I don't travel quite enough to see the value in the Reserve, but I can see why many like it. Amazing job as usual Sir!
Completely agree with your thoughts! And I remember you saying that before about your 100k bonus, that awesome that you were able to take advantage of that! Thanks as always 👍
I think if you travel more than few times a year, the CSR makes more sense based on the $300 travel credit. You don’t have to use the travel portal for it, so it’s very flexible.
Yeah that travel credit is super easy to use over the course of 1 year. And I agree, if you're traveling more than a few times per yer - then the value and benefits you get from the Reserve can be worth it!
Especially if you travel internationally with tickets costing 1500$ and have longlayovers. Priority pass select is a blessing for long distance travellers. Food and a place to sleep is priceless.
I agree: the CSP is probably the better way to go first, and at the end of the first year, you can choose if you want to upgrade to the CSR. That's exactly how I would play it! Great comparison video! Also, nice background color contrast with the blue and yellow - your studio setup is coming along quite nicely!!
Yeah that's exactly what I would do too! If I ever wanted to upgrade to the Reserve then I would, but I think the higher welcome bonuses typically offered by the CSP make that the go to option for most. And thanks! Yeah I'm trying to play around with the colors and objects in the background so its slowly taking shape. I've always liked a minimal approach like that. I just realized the corner shelf that I recently bought looks a lot like yours in your video background too!
I have been using CSR for several years now. During this time, I booked several free flights and hotels using points. I also use Priority Pass lounges a lot. CSR is the card for me.

I think one of the biggest deciding factors for me is the insurance coverage when traveling but that isn’t mentioned here. Will research more but reserve might be my pick here even though I don’t travel that much
great comparison Daniel. One little thing about CSP is that you also get 10% anniversary points boost each account anniversary, you’ll earn bonus points equal to 10% of your total purchases made the previous year. That means if you spend $25,000 on purchases, you’ll get 2,500 bonus points.*
Thanks so much Boris! Yeah the 10% anniversary bonus is a small little added amount that won't be much for most people which is why I didn't mention it. Just because for $2,000 of annual spending on the CSP like I mentioned in my video example, that would only be 200 points or about $2. But it's still something like you said! Thanks for the comment to point out this feature 👍
I definitely believe one needs to have both one of the Freedom and one of the Sapphire cards to achieve max benefit. What's nice is that if the Sapphire card doesn't bring value after one year, you can downgrade perhaps, although you lose the redemption boost for travel.
Yeah I think its definitely important to take advantage of the other Chase cards out there to pair them with one of the Sapphire cards! I love that we have the option to downgrade as well, it makes these cards with annual fees feel less permanent
Would you prefer using the reserve first as you save for a honeymoon and then downgrade to the preferred? Not a fan of the $550 annual fee but it’s worth for a honeymoon, i would consider it.
Right now the CSP makes more sense for me. I think I will want to upgrade to the CSR eventually but that wont happen for another 2 years or so. But like you said, you can't really go too wrong with either.
I've watched this video a while ago and am just now coming back to it to review everything, I must say this was a well thought out, very informative, and a very professionally edited video. Thank you for taking your time to spread very helpful information.
Hey my friend! Hope all is well. This is an excellent video on a topic many people are curious about. Great job! I agree with your conclusion for most people, but for me personally, the CSR has proven to be better. I’ve had it for a few years, and the math (not to mention the slightly better insurances, etc) seems to give the CSR the advantage. This was particularly true during COVID. Chase did a good job of making cardholders “whole” with modifications to the $300 credit and the Pay Yourself Back feature. So, for now, I’m hanging on to the CSR. But as you said, you can’t really go wrong here, and the ability to product change as your life situation changes makes the decision pretty low risk. Sorry to be long winded today! :)
What's up Anthony! Yeah you're definitely right, the CSR has the advantage for the right Chase customer so I'm glad that you're able to get the value from it. I could see myself upgrading to it in the future for those insurances and the point redemption values as I continue to travel more. I've always viewed these cards the exact same way and looked at it as "low risk" because of the product change options. Haha the longer the comments the better! Thanks as always for taking the time to watch and comment 👍
Thanks for making this video! Appreciate! I was thinking of upgrading to reserve but after watching it makes more sense just to hold on to preferred :)
2:27 curious to see if this includes relocating as well? E.g.: U-Haul. Moving across country for work here soon. If not, we're still planning to travel a lot! Love my job. We got Chase Sapphire Reserve!
Great video! I was comparing both cards and doing some maths and got the exactly same conclusions. What about the preferred vs the equivalent delta American Express?
I just received my reserve card and I didn’t know the annual fee was 550 wish I watched your video 1st Can I down grade the me month in or do I have to wait a year?
Love your videos man! Been watching for a couple months now and you've got possibly the best and most consistent content! Your numbers may not be there yet, but your name will be as big as ask sebby and graham soon enough!
Sebby seems more geared to the YOLO traveler than the average one. Most people aren’t flying to the Far East and vacationing in the Maldives regularly. This channel seems more down to earth.
Thank you so much for saying all of that - both of you! Support and feedback like that make me love the content that I'm making and this community even more! I appreciate it, I'm definitely still a newer channel since I only started about 15 months ago and really took it seriously after learning how making videos worked for the first few months of that. So I'm excited to see where my numbers might be this time next year and then beyond! I love Sebby's content and I've been watching him for years. I think what's cool about TH-cam is that everyone gets to share their own personal experiences around these different topics so my experience is obviously different than his so I hope we both can continue making good videos in our own styles that everyone in the credit card community wants to watch! Thanks again!
Better travel insurance, Priority pass and global entry push the Reserve over the preferred with me. I need to look into if booking flights through portal is worth it. I usually book directly with carrier.
I think dining $ is worth mentioning at 3x vs 1x points depending on dollars you spend dining out. That adds up with the CSR with the 1.5x portal redemption.
Great analysis on how to quantitatively decide between the two. Right now the 5/24 rule is holding me back from Chase, but once I'm out of Chase credit card jail, I'll probably start with the CSP. Too bad I'll have to miss out on the current 80,000 point bonus.
Thanks Ramon! Yeah 5/24 is annoying when situations like that happen and there's a higher bonus that you have to miss out on. But the same has happened before with me! Hopefully there will be other elevated bonus offers in the near future as well
Yep, that's the way to do it if you want the CSR! The bonuses have lately been better for the CSP so upgrading after 1 year is probably the best strategy if you actually want the CSR
I was looking at the Chase Reserve and the Delta Amex Reserve. I'm leaning more toward the Delta Reserve card which gives you free lounge access and free seat upgrades for the same $550, first class is usually $1000 and the lounge is $50 to me that's worth the yearly cost. 20,000 points isn't much for tickets when most tickets nowadays are starting out at least at $300.
Is there any downside/or negative to having one of each of these two cards? I'm considering getting the Chase sapphire preferred because of the lower annual fee and the Amex platinum. Does that NOT make sense to do that? Or is it best to stay card specific?
If I go with the CSP and decide to downgrade to a non annual fee card after the first year, but I already have CFF and CFU. Is cancelling the card the only other option? Great video!
Well, I have traveled at least once a month recently. I qualified for the reserve, and I'm going to try it for a year, and see how it goes. I think I'm going end up liking the reserve even though my intuitions are telling me preferred is probably better for me right now.
I applied Sapphire Preferred today on 07/21/2022. I got approved and the credit limit is 20,000. I am a little bit nervous because my total credit limit is 44,000 NOW. I watched your video which is about 35,000 credit limit. My expectation was 5-7k with this card.😭
Hello Daniel, i'm looking into these card and I stumble on your video. Great video but I have a question. For the Preferred, the $50 hotel credit is for any website or Chase ultimate website only? you said look on other website for price comparison so I'm curious that $50 will apply to any hotel stay book with the card or through chase portal? thank you if you can answer this.
So the $50 hotel credit will only be applied on a hotel booked through the Chase Ultimate Rewards portal, not a hotel booked on any other website. Good question, so I hope that clarifies it!
If you use your points for travel transfer partners like Hyatt or American, the travel portal isn’t very useful. I use my Chase trifecta almost exclusively to maintain my Globalist status at Hyatt. That doesn’t leave many days for other hotels. Maybe if in the future we fly more as a family but right now it doesn’t make much sense.
Yeah I'm the same way where I'm focusing my points to redeem for Hyatt stays to get what I think is the best value for Chase points. So I value the 1:1 transfer parters available on both cards more than the better redemption rates in the portal for the Reserve. So because of that - I go with the CSP!
I would be careful; been denied with similar history, chase is typically more strict on applications and consider income, other chase relationships, etc. I have a CSP now but was once denied, just a word of warning. Good luck!
I've seen people get approved for the CSP as their first Chase card, but 1 year of credit history is probably a little limited - even if your score is good. My girlfriend got approved for the CSP last year as her first Chase card - but it was her 3rd card overall and she's had about 3-5 years of history on the other 2. I think its usually best to start with one of the Chase Freedom cards with a shorter credit history and then eventually move up to the CSP - that's what I did!
@@Daniel_Braun sounds good to me, I will start with the freedom flex first, how long should I wait after that one to establish a good relationship with chase ?
Thanks so much, glad you liked it! I'll definitely be doing some similar comparison style videos like this in the future because I haven't compared 2 cards in a video for a while
I would like more clarification on the differences in the travel insurance benefits between the two cards. I get conflicting information when I talk to Chase about that, and that is an important benefit to me, particularly the medical evacuation if near necessary
thanks so much for such an easy breakdown! Currently looking for a new credit card that is very beneficial for travel since I have a trip at least every year.
If you use the Chase Sapphire Prefered card for the year and then downgrade after that first year do you lose the points that you earned for that past year?
It’s a net cost. So you pay $550 up front but then throughout the year you get $300 back on travel expenses that you would likely already pay for. So over the course of a year it’s a net $250 cost
If I currently have the CSR, can I downgrade that car to a no annual fee and then sign up for the Chase Sapphire preferred so that I can get the welcome bonus?
Great Video! Any reason you didn't mention Doordash benefits $60 ($5 per month, stack upto $15 every 3 months and spend) and Peleton $120 that you get with the CSR. Also, what value you put into Visa Infinite. For example, I have Shipt free until 2025 due to having CSR Visa Infinity, which I use to get free same day deliveries from Target often.
Thanks so much! And basically I felt that those benefits are just minor details and only provide value for certain people that use those services. Lyft is something that I feel like more people use and it's related to travel and transportation which are common themes for the card. But I believe the Peloton benefit expires soon in June 2022 as well. The Doordash benefits are a nice little bonus that can be good to have, but probably won't be the dealbreaker for most people when deciding between these cards. And for Visa Infinite I feel the same way, it's very minor benefits that will be useful for some if they look into these details. That Shipt benefit could definitely be nice and convenient for you!
So help me out I fly Jet Blue using the JB Plus card for flying and I use Marriott Bonvoy for Hotels... what I want to do is use 1 card for my everything card and be able to use those modes of flights and Hotel, Is the Preferred the card that works for those and other and yet having a good return on reward points?
1.5 on CSR vs 1.25 on CSP really doesn't matter: if you don't intend to transfer points, US Bank's Altitude Reserve wipes the floor with both CSP and CSR at EAF of $75. 1. Better multipliers: 3x on dining, travel, and mobile wallet!!! 2. Easier to redeem credit: the annual credit of $325 is automatically redeemed on travel and dining. 3. Easier to redeem points: your points can be redeemed on travel purchases in realtime at 1.5cpp. 4. Redeeming credit/points also earn points (3x)
Question: does buying drinks at a bar count as dining expenses? Because I spend a helluva lot of money at bars and I'd like to see some reward for it. Lemme know.
I travel with my girlfriend quite frequently. I would say about 4-5 trips per year. Do you think the reserve would be a good option over the preferred?
It all depends on the benefits that you plan to use, but personally for me I've found that the cheaper Preferred does the job just fine because it has the same transfer partners
Great vid! I had a question regarding authorized users on the sapphire reserve. I am an authorized user on a chase sapphire reserve account and read that I am able to utilize the 1.5% more value/ 1:1 transfer with partners. Can you make a video on how to do this? It’s not clear on the Chase app as I can’t transfer my UR points to the CSR account. Hope you understand. Thanks!
Hey trying to decide between the chase sapphire preferred and the united mileage. the CSP comes with 80,000 points and the united comes with 50,000 miles. I’m planning on traveling a lot in the coming year and living abroad currently which one will give me the max value? The lounges that the united mileage offers is also persuasive.. any advice?
Yeah if you're able to use the 3x on groceries then no doubt its a great option for you on top of those 3x categories as well! Thanks for sharing with the comment!
I don’t feel like the CSR is good for me anymore. In the first quarter of 2023 my 48 months will be over. Can I call and have them downgrade to a CSP and get the Bonus or do I need to downgrade to a Flex and reapply for a CSP to get the new bonus?
I currently have 331k UR points and currently have the sapphire preferred and while given my income and travel flexibility this is the better card for me I feel like I have too many points to not upgrade to get the 1.5x back. I’d also be planning to transfer to travel partners given the better value though so I’m not even sure how often I’d use it. Any thoughts on which card is better for me?
My credits good it’s around round 750 I only have furniture credit cards(Ashley, Mattress Firm, Haynes, Lowes) that I’ve had for about a year and change but no REAL! credit cards. I wanna start the chase trifecta but I don’t know which one I should apply for first and should I go for reserve over preferred in my trifecta I probably travel 2-3 times a year. What would you recommend?
I think if you can take advantage of the waived fees due to being military, it makes more sense to get the CSR since is free with all the benefits. Then for gas just go with the USAA Amex… 5% on 3k for gas and military base purchases.
I value UR points at more than 1.5 CPP anyway with Hyatt as a partner, so I don’t think the increased redemption rate of the CSR has any actual benefit over the CSP. Assuming a baseline increase of +.5 CPP from a no-AF setup to the CSP setup, you’d need to earn 9,000 UR points per year to cover the effective AF. That’s a pretty easy number to hit, and I think it makes it almost impossible for the CSR to ever win this
I feel the same way with how I value my UR points with Hyatt being my most used transfer partner. I probably value mine at 2 to 2.5 CPP on the low end with Hyatt lately. That's why I've gone with the CSP as well for the past 3 years. For anyone that plans to take advantage of redeeming points like this, the CSP is the way to go!

Great video! I was comparing both cards and doing some maths and got the exactly same conclusions. What about the preferred vs the equivalent delta American Express?
I just received my reserve card and I didn’t know the annual fee was 550 wish I watched your video 1st
Can I down grade the me month in or do I have to wait a year?
Love your videos man! Been watching for a couple months now and you've got possibly the best and most consistent content! Your numbers may not be there yet, but your name will be as big as ask sebby and graham soon enough!
Also can't believe how much you're doing alongside your 9-5 job!
Sebby seems more geared to the YOLO traveler than the average one. Most people aren’t flying to the Far East and vacationing in the Maldives regularly. This channel seems more down to earth.
@@curmudgeonextraordinaire1884 I absolutely agree!
@@Daniel_Braun well said! I enjoy the variety and I'm glad it exists.
Seriously great work man, keep it up! Thanks for the response 🤙
thanks for this, super straightforward, makes more sense for me to get the preferred.
Better travel insurance, Priority pass and global entry push the Reserve over the preferred with me. I need to look into if booking flights through portal is worth it. I usually book directly with carrier.
Have been a loyal CSP for a few years now - have about 100,000 points racked up right now so going to upgrade to CSR!
God damn good break down. Thanks!
Thanks so much for watching, glad you liked it!
Hopefully there will be other elevated bonus offers in the near future as well
This is easy. Apply for the CSP first, get the bonus then in year 2, upgrade to the CSR
Great comparisons! Really informative and enjoyed it.
Thanks for this awesome video! But I do have a question does the CSP have access to priority pass?
Is there any downside/or negative to having one of each of these two cards? I'm considering getting the Chase sapphire preferred because of the lower annual fee and the Amex platinum. Does that NOT make sense to do that? Or is it best to stay card specific?
Does it make sense to use (only an example) like the chase card for hotel rewards and the platinum for flight rewards or vice versa?
Do both of these cards have 0 foreign transaction fee ?
I have the Freedom Unlimited card. My next card trying to get the Sapphire Preferred. It's one of my next year main goals.
If you could only and only choose 1 card for the sake of simplicity what would it be and why?
Chase Pref/Resr
or
Amex gold/plat
I applied Sapphire Preferred today on 07/21/2022. I got approved and the credit limit is 20,000. I am a little bit nervous because my total credit limit is 44,000 NOW. I watched your video which is about 35,000 credit limit. My expectation was 5-7k with this card.😭
😱😱 fear unblocked!
@@Damalgama yes 😭
Hello Daniel, i'm looking into these card and I stumble on your video. Great video but I have a question. For the Preferred, the $50 hotel credit is for any website or Chase ultimate website only? you said look on other website for price comparison so I'm curious that $50 will apply to any hotel stay book with the card or through chase portal? thank you if you can answer this.
So the $50 hotel credit will only be applied on a hotel booked through the Chase Ultimate Rewards portal, not a hotel booked on any other website. Good question, so I hope that clarifies it!
Im assuming for the reserve, the 10 points for hotels does not apply to air bnbs right?
Which card would be good for wedding expenses and do points expire or last a lifetime?
@@Daniel_Braun yep. I only use Hyatt points when I can get 2 cents per point value, which makes my unlimited flex yield 10 percent.
Can you do a comparison video of the navy federal flagship vs the chase sapphire preferred !
How many cards (a range) would you recommend for a credit enthusiast in college? Is more than 3 crazy if you’re income is still under 15k?
Transferring points! Glad you mentioned that.
Would it be a good idea to apply for the chase sapphire preferred for the first card in chase with one year of credit history ?
If you have a mid 700 or higher credit rating, I’d say you’d be ok.
@@curmudgeonextraordinaire1884 thanks for the advice
Does anyone actually use the Chase Portal for travel? The 5X bonus is nice, but is it really worth the potential headache of not booking direct?
Excellent breakdown Thanks
Thanks, glad you liked it!
Great video concept, Daniel! I would love to see you do this with other cards! 👏🏾👏🏾
Thanks so much, glad you liked it! I'll definitely be doing some similar comparison style videos like this in the future because I haven't compared 2 cards in a video for a while
Whoop whoop I just upgraded to the reserve but is great to know that I can downgrade back if it’s not beneficial.
I would like more clarification on the differences in the travel insurance benefits between the two cards. I get conflicting information when I talk to Chase about that, and that is an important benefit to me, particularly the medical evacuation if near necessary
Just upgraded from CSP to CSR. Process was pretty easy and took about 5 minutes.
I wondered how messy that might be
Great video!!! Definitely made me decide which card to get :)!!
If you don’t utilize the Chase clubs or have an Amex Plat the preferred is way better plus you get a 80k bonus
If you already have Global Entry from another card, can you apply the Global Entry credit to a spouse?
So airport lounge only applies to Sapphire Reserve? Thank you in advance ☺️
If I made an upgrade or downgrade between cards, am I going to receive the Welcome Membership Rewards benefit on both?
thanks so much for such an easy breakdown! Currently looking for a new credit card that is very beneficial for travel since I have a trip at least every year.
Are these traditional credit cards or are they charge cards with benefits?
Excellent comparison
If you use the Chase Sapphire Prefered card for the year and then downgrade after that first year do you lose the points that you earned for that past year?
why do you mention that we should be using cards like the chase freedom unlimited for misc. purchases? it doesn't matter either way does it?
I’m a little confused, how does it bring down the price with the travel credit when you still have to pay the annual fee?
@@Daniel_Braun thanks! that makes sense
Didn’t know about the shipt benefit, thanks!
New to the credit card game. What are your thoughts on World or Hyatt after the completing the Chase Trifecta?
Can you still downgrade the Reserve or preferred to the unlimited or flex one if you already own those cards ?
So help me out I fly Jet Blue using the JB Plus card for flying and I use Marriott Bonvoy for Hotels... what I want to do is use 1 card for my everything card and be able to use those modes of flights and Hotel, Is the Preferred the card that works for those and other and yet having a good return on reward points?
What about the chase luxury hotel collection access? That can be another valuable feature that was not reviewed.
Please what is this. Just upgraded my family to reserve been using preferred past 8 years thank you
You also forgot the $60 credit in $5 increments for DoorDash (only for CSR)
Yeah that's another smaller benefit but one that can be good if you use that service a lot
Are these both considered charge cards? And have to be paid in full?
The lounges that the united mileage offers is also persuasive.. any advice?
AMEX blue Preferred is the only Amex I have, best card they have. Works great to plug holes in my Chase trifecta.
CSP. I actually get value out of the 3x on groceries. This card is pretty much my everyday card with 3x on dining as well as 3x on streaming.
Great analysis as always,
Does the preferred offer any lounge access?
I currently have 331k UR points and currently have the sapphire preferred and while given my income and travel flexibility this is the better card for me I feel like I have too many points to not upgrade to get the 1.5x back. I’d also be planning to transfer to travel partners given the better value though so I’m not even sure how often I’d use it. Any thoughts on which card is better for me?
Thanks for explaining it but is it possible I can convert from sapphire preferred to reserved
When was the last time you actually used Priority Pass?
this is chase's version of the Amex platinum vs gold card
Great video Daniel. Can you make one for Amex too? Thanks!
Yeah with the annual fee waived for military then I agree that the CSR makes the most sense easily!
Thanks, Daniel! 👌🏻
Happy to make the video, thank as always for watching!
That’s a pretty easy number to hit, and I think it makes it almost impossible for the CSR to ever win this
👍🏾
I feel the same way with how I value my UR points with Hyatt being my most used transfer partner. I probably value mine at 2 to 2.5 CPP on the low end with Hyatt lately. That's why I've gone with the CSP as well for the past 3 years. For anyone that plans to take advantage of redeeming points like this, the CSP is the way to go!
