- This is when Emmy Rossum, Patrick Wilson, and Andrew Lloyd Weber went to Japan to promote the film version of 'Phantom of the Opera.'
Gerard Butler played the Phantom which I thought was odd since the character required an older man with an excellent voice.
I am so impressed with Patrick Wilson's clear, pitch-perfect voice.
I felt my heart melt when Patrick Wilson started to sing....oh oh

I agree with some of the comments that Patrick and Emmy sang it very well together. But when Gerald sang it to her on the bridge towards the end.....there was no comparison to him. He owned that part beyond anyone. I just wish she didn't have to pull his mask off.
Gerard sang it in a way that was more like he was talking to someone he loved, with such care and tenderness.

Gerard Butler does have an excellent voice--it's more on the haunting side than powerful. And Gerard is not the only young guy to ever play the Phantom (eh-hem Ramin.)

@@michaelcastanaga5839 In all honesty, though Ramin has a clearer voice and probably a better range (Gerard can go falsetto, and so can Ramin), Gerard's persona and presence, plus older-sounding voice and acting, have me personally favoring him. Of course, Michael Crawford is my all time favorite.
But he was the best looking and sexiest Phantom I've ever seen.

I LOVE Sarah Brightman and I heard Emmy Rossum before I got the chance to hear Sierra Boggess, who did an remarkably stunning job as Christine but I have to admit that IMO Emmy Owned this song.

It is so discouraging to read that someone here thinks ALW " looks creepy "; the man was born as he is, can't we just accept that ?? --As for Gerard Butler, remember it was ALW & Joel Schumacher who wanted Phantom to be tall, dark, sexy, & masculine, younger than the men who had been playing the role on B.'Way. And, IMHO, he was perfect, with that Scot's accent coming through . Emmy is so gorgeous, Patrick was perfect as Raoul, & the film is a masterpiece. Wolfsky9

the new phantom series is designed to pull in younger audiences by making the phantom into a young upstart cool guy but this is a 180 from the original vision which was so effective where the phantom is a cool calculating experienced and controlling fatherly figure.

Gerard Butler was simply amazing and powerful as the phantom and no one could have performed in that intense, dark and sexy way better! And Patrick was also amazing as Emmy! The whole movie is a masterpiece and an extraordinary tribute to Andrew Lloyd Weber's masterpiece!
Hey everyone! Andrew Lloyd Webber (the writer) chose the cast, so these people are exactly what he wanted. I thought the casting was great! Gerard is not the best singer in the world, but he has such passion and feeling in his voice. He brought me to tears often throughout the movie. Plus, he is easy on the eyes. Emmy Rossum has a great voice! I wish I could sing like she does.

But I just now realized after watching that the two actors are the same man... I never realized that Patrick played Raoul, or that he could sing like this... Oh, what a voice!

What's crazy about Gerard singing all his parts is that he's not a trained singer. Phantom was the first film he did when he sang his parts, but being from Scotland he has this natural kind of rock tone in his voice as he sings that he used very well in the film

Please don't try to change my opinion. He wasn't the best, but I loved him as the Phantom singing and all. If you're comparing him to the guys who play that role on stage, don't. It's not fair to group him with professional singers. Also, stage and film are two different mediums. Even you're a professional singer, you're going to have people you like and don't like. The Phantom was not a professionally trained singer in the book. He taught himself. Good and bad singing is relative and therefore everyone has their own idea of good and bad singing.

The duet is great.....but I know I ain't the only guy here who notices that Emmy Rossum has a SMOKIN' HOT BODY....she's got the whole package. Sings, beautiful,and got a SMOKIN' HOT BODY....! DAMN....!

@rogerzilla thats why during the show, they have the top E prerecorded, since most singers can't handle that night after night. this is also why the stage version has an alternate christine to perform 2 of the 8 shows a week...
Emmy is naturally more of a "2nd soprano" in choir speak. I doubt she would be able to sing Christine's part now.
