There are parts in the speedrun where I think "oh they're just waiting and messing around" but somehow everything that they do is INTEGRAL to the speedrun
The video has been re-uploaded. Unfortunately, speedrun contained some mistakes. We spawned defibrillator on c11m1 - it's wrong, because no defibrillator spawns on 1st map 18:43. It appears on c11m2 instead. Also we noticed some incorrects in statistics 37:13. We apologies about this re-upload and our mistakes. It was hard to make the speedrun perfect. Sometimes we can miss something... So sad to lose many views and your awesome comments, that you sent to us :( But we had to do it. This was a common mistake.

I've been rewatching this video over and over again since the day it came out. I was 17 years old then, I'm 20 now. I still can't get over how passionate the L4D community is in all ways, whether it's getting extremely long survival times, completing the maps in the fastest time or being one of the best aimers and trackers in Versus mode. The community just some how knows how to add some pizazz to the game and push it beyond the limits we know it as. While I find enjoyment in playing L4D1/L4D2 in a casual setting with friends/family, goofing off on different maps, spamming voicelines and getting stupidly killed by Witches and Tanks, having the honor to watch masters of their craft show us work that has been in the works for years and years, display it to us all and show integral parts as to how this came about is such an amazing pleasure I've gotten to experience since I bought Left 4 Dead 1 and Left 4 Dead 2 on steam. To the noa1mbot family, Shine, poi, NoSkillch, Steve, Shadow, and it's fellows, CRIVE and nightinside. I thank you, not just for what you do, but for what you provide for the L4D community, what you bring to the table and what you do to inspire other people to not just speedrun L4D, but to inspire a goal to speedrun in other games, to have an incentive to do more than goof off with your friends on maps. Watching this video for some reason brings some tears to the eyes, maybe it's because this game still has a beating heart even after 15 years of it's existence, and videos/community, and challenges like this keep the blood pumping for more to come, but I digress. Forgive me if this is a dumb question but how do games as rng heavy as undead get TAS'ed I mean isnt a TAS a pre recorded set of movements played back in real time on a seperate run? If so wouldnt any slight varience cause things to go askew? Like a singular stray zombie hit or such, and even outside of left for dead there seem to be TASes of other rng heavy games as well and I just dont understand how it works
TAS just means tools were used to create the run. Tools such as: Pausing, slowing down the game so that reaction speed isn't a factor in the speed that a game can be run. Save states so that you can save and load the game's state at will, giving you as many attempts to try something that might require many attempts to perform. As well as tools that allow performing specific inputs or to gain information about the game's or player's state (velocity, angle, location in the form of coordinates etc.)
Thanks for you question. Yes, the TAS is pre-recorded: map script, player's inputs, spawns are saved in files. You can run the script in real time and get a super play. In a nutshell, the creation process looks like: *routing > script building > demo recording > video recording* And also, yes, definitely, some infected that spawned by RNG (if we previously didn't save them on the map) could break the script and then the segment getting invalid. Usually, during TAS recording, no matter what game, human monitors the process and in case of aberration, the process can be rewritten. Originally, in L4D2 saves aren't available, only between saferooms - these are original 55 segments (maps/chapters) by the developers, where you may split your speedrun and re-record something inside the segment. So how do we deal with that heavy RNG presence? We were building a script for each map separately. An entire map/segment can be fully scripted and restarted/playback unlimited times in fast forward until a saferoom is successfully reached. The script will be restarted, if the operator seen some kind of issues during playback (like unlucky spawn by infected, incorrect boost by projectiles or something else that looks weird, non-natural). Mainly, such a script included de-RNG'ed initial infected spawns, Tanks spawns, items spawns, saved survivors movements, boosts, timings etc.
@@ryuk6750 Unfortunately, it takes a lot of time to save each infected spawn, make perfect each player's movement and make full optimize at all. During creation of TAS in that time there wasn't quite profitable to provide in-map saves as it the game was already divided on 55 segments and it's pretty suited. Also in general, we didn't want to increase Project's deadline and were avoiding the development of complex tools whenever possible. We tried to not focus on recording inputs for a long. Our goal was show optimal for its time speedrun.
This is so skilful and not at the same time, the dedication and precision to make these skips and plays is unreal and coordination is insane but at the same time I think TAS speed runs take a lot of the fun out of game and makes it less enjoyable to watch as it’s never viable in any game, still tho the amount of effort going into to this is insane and I really do applaud the effort from everyone
Completely agree with you. Originally, that video commentary planned before speedrun release, as a short variant. So much details were, as it turned out, so we decided to postpone it indefinitely and release a full-fledged version instead. We see proper interest to such a video, so it should be soon. i'm not sure if i'm the only one feeling this way but the fact that they use exploits and glitches makes it so much less interesting i mean there is a reason why certain games don't do any achievements when cheats are enabled or used or whatever in that direction
Well it’s a tool assisted speed run and usually they label it as such. A speed run of this game is not nearly as fun to watch without the tools they use in this

Forgive me if this is a dumb question but how do games as rng heavy as undead get TAS'ed I mean isnt a TAS a pre recorded set of movements played back in real time on a seperate run? If so wouldnt any slight varience cause things to go askew?
Like a singular stray zombie hit or such, and even outside of left for dead there seem to be TASes of other rng heavy games as well and I just dont understand how it works
TAS just means tools were used to create the run. Tools such as: Pausing, slowing down the game so that reaction speed isn't a factor in the speed that a game can be run. Save states so that you can save and load the game's state at will, giving you as many attempts to try something that might require many attempts to perform. As well as tools that allow performing specific inputs or to gain information about the game's or player's state (velocity, angle, location in the form of coordinates etc.)

Yes, the TAS is pre-recorded: map script, player's inputs, spawns are saved in files. You can run the script in real time and get a super play. In a nutshell, the creation process looks like: *routing > script building > demo recording > video recording*
And also, yes, definitely, some infected that spawned by RNG (if we previously didn't save them on the map) could break the script and then the segment getting invalid.
Usually, during TAS recording, no matter what game, human monitors the process and in case of aberration, the process can be rewritten. Originally, in L4D2 saves aren't available, only between saferooms - these are original 55 segments (maps/chapters) by the developers, where you may split your speedrun and re-record something inside the segment.
So how do we deal with that heavy RNG presence?
We were building a script for each map separately. An entire map/segment can be fully scripted and restarted/playback unlimited times in fast forward until a saferoom is successfully reached. The script will be restarted, if the operator seen some kind of issues during playback (like unlucky spawn by infected, incorrect boost by projectiles or something else that looks weird, non-natural).
Mainly, such a script included de-RNG'ed initial infected spawns, Tanks spawns, items spawns, saved survivors movements, boosts, timings etc.

@@ryuk6750 Unfortunately, it takes a lot of time to save each infected spawn, make perfect each player's movement and make full optimize at all.
During creation of TAS in that time there wasn't quite profitable to provide in-map saves as it the game was already divided on 55 segments and it's pretty suited. Also in general, we didn't want to increase Project's deadline and were avoiding the development of complex tools whenever possible. We tried to not focus on recording inputs for a long. Our goal was show optimal for its time speedrun.

This is so skilful and not at the same time, the dedication and precision to make these skips and plays is unreal and coordination is insane but at the same time I think TAS speed runs take a lot of the fun out of game and makes it less enjoyable to watch as it’s never viable in any game, still tho the amount of effort going into to this is insane and I really do applaud the effort from everyone

Completely agree with you.
Originally, that video commentary planned before speedrun release, as a short variant. So much details were, as it turned out, so we decided to postpone it indefinitely and release a full-fledged version instead. We see proper interest to such a video, so it should be soon.

i mean there is a reason why certain games don't do any achievements when cheats are enabled or used or whatever in that direction

Well it’s a tool assisted speed run and usually they label it as such. A speed run of this game is not nearly as fun to watch without the tools they use in this
@@theugliestduckling0854 bruh i know this is labeled correctly and no one said it wasn't using tools, its just that i happened to find a (cautious wording) "real" speedrun more interesting, thought there are some little tricks to progress faster through the level but not skip entire segments

I actually pulled off a bunny hop while jumping off a zombie for the first time while playing this years ago it blew my mind and I could never pull it off again.

They used aimbot. It's a tool assisted speedrun, so it's allowed. Alongside auto bhops, trigger scripts, and the likes.
