    "Worse than a Masterlock" - the ultimate condemnation of a lock.

  • @zachaliles

    I think the real question here is this; are you at some point going to show us a lock that you feel comfortable using on your firearms?

    • @fuckingdank6333
      @fuckingdank6333 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      zachariah liles He said somewhere that the best security is a good quality gun safe, but I think he has yet to recommend any actual locks.

    • @lockpickinglawyer
      @lockpickinglawyer  7 ปีที่แล้ว +89

      I don't know of one that I like. HOWEVER, I do plan to make one using common tools and easily obtained materials in a future video.

    • @zachaliles
      @zachaliles 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I think I'd enjoy seeing something like that more than something you can buy off the shelf. And I don't think I'm alone on that sentiment either.

    • @zachaliles

      fucking dank I think I do remember him saying that. And that's true. But I'm going off of what he's picking in this "series".

    My father in law lost the key to his years ago and has been able to use his firearm for well over a decade. Thanks to the content here and a couple paperclips I was able to pop the lock in under 30 seconds. Thank you sir!

    Fun fact. Those locks can be pulled open by a reasonably strong person.

      Guess it depends on your definition of fun.😂 I had one with a broken key. If you can get your fingers between the shells, just pull it right apart.

    I have the old Master version of that, and they are instantly defeated by twisting the sides in opposite directions with pliers or visegrips. Rotation disengages the teeth.

    haha "the Club" I remember in the early 90's when every economy car was festooned proudly with "The Club". I didn't know they made padlocks, though I've seen their master style trigger locks. At some point you should also show how easy this style of trigger lock is to "bypass" or "shim" (really more of a prying) with a small screw driver or ice pick. Tools a lot of people usually just have within easy access of curious adolescents.

    • @lockpickinglawyer
      @lockpickinglawyer  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      LOL... Ah, the good ol' days on Honda civics tooling around with aftermarket 14" rims, huge wings, and the ubiquitous red steering wheel lock! As for bypasses, I'm not sure that it's as easy as people make it out to be. When properly installed, bypassing is not a simple proposition.

    • @brianhignett8954
      @brianhignett8954 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Harry, The Club steering wheel lock has fallen from favour, and rightly so. Car thieves quickly realised that with a firm tap with a hammer on the end of the sliding shaft, it would collapse the ratcheting pall, and the lock could be removed - in seconds. We tested various brands, and they all did the same. Regards, Brian.

    • @JEMHull-gf9el
      @JEMHull-gf9el 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also they're a fairly gauche means of car security. Even if I owned a cheap auto I would not want the ugly club anywhere near my steering wheel, I'll let the unwashed masses have the club, no thank you.

    What about using a steel cable and normal padlock as a gun lock? Much like the cable gun locks, but with better parts.

    • @lockpickinglawyer

      That could work if you could get it to fit... with the understanding that those cables (particularly the small ones) are not so great.

    OK been wondering since the master lock version.. Is the receiver side of the lock made with a soft metal/ spring steel, I remember a lock like this in my grandparents home (think it was on a tool chest) we just would pry it open (the receiver side would go past the groves in the lock with not much force) and push it back together and my grandpa was never the wiser

    • @lockpickinglawyer
      @lockpickinglawyer  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      More than a few people have mentioned that to me... personally, I've found these hard to bypass when properly installed. Maybe I'll do some more experimenting.

    Is it necessary for you to use the tension tool in order to rake the pins! I own several firearms and am very concerned with safety as due to the children I have in the house, but tensioning a lock I don’t feel would be something my child would think to do! Is it possible to rake without tensioning please!

  • @jochimdewandel
    @jochimdewandel 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Here in Belgium we are required to have a gun lock on the guns when transporting them to a shooting club, but it's just meant to keep someone from firing their gun immediately , picking it can take a bit of time so you can't use it straight away.

    • @lockpickinglawyer
      @lockpickinglawyer  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't know what's available in your country, but if the state of gun locks is similar, that law's effect is rendered ineffective IMO.

    It seems that you pick these locks before hand to know what to do for the video, which is nice but it would be interesting to see you problem solve and find a solution. Also, would it be a lot harder to solve if you could not see the key before hand?

    • @lockpickinglawyer
      @lockpickinglawyer  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Assume that I've picked a lock at least once or twice before turning the camera on. The main thing that's done off camera tends to be experimenting with which tension tool works best, and how to pick without blocking the camera's view.

  • @johnnyyao9876
    @johnnyyao9876 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    very informative. but i don't think trigger locks are intended to fully secure a firearm. a criminal would just take it and worry about picking the lock much, much later. but they're still useful when children are in the house. someone with bad intentions can't immediately use it on you without having locking pickers or a key already in possession anyway.

  • @ClarinoI
    @ClarinoI 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It's slightly alarming that in a country with such a lot of firearms as the US that there are so many abysmally poor devices for securing them, and seemingly so few good gun security locks.

    • @ClarinoI
      @ClarinoI 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Hell's favorite NPC #69OU812 . exe I'd be more concerned that the burglar got into the house and opened the lock shortly before I got home.

    • @holysirsalad
      @holysirsalad 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very much so! Unfortunately the reality of many of these devices is that they're legislated into existence without any specification as to how good they are - but the uninformed sees them and thinks "well it's a lock, it must be secure" and that's that. The same reason people buy garbage padlocks with plastic cores for sheds and storage lockers. If these devices are required they should have some kind of UL rating, IMO.
      We have a similar issue in Canada where certain guns need to be kept in a "safe" but there's no specification or definition of what that is - so any sheet metal box will do, really.

    • @ClarinoI
      @ClarinoI 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@holysirsalad That's terrible.
      Gun safes in my country have to be much more secure, and bolted to a structural wall.
      Makes me wonder if there's a huge gap in the market that LPL and Bosnian Bill might be able to exploit.

  • @thexardas8395

    • @lockpickinglawyer
      @lockpickinglawyer  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The problem is that these locks are not sufficient for stopping curious adolescents.

    • @thexardas8395
      @thexardas8395 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think you are overestimated "curious adolescents". Given unlimited time frame any lock good or bad can be broken in, but for short time I don't think there is a lot of kids with your level of lock expertise. IE as long as a lock can survive basic level of tempering for reasonable amount of time done by amateur I'd say it is good enough for me. BTW I am not trying to defend bad locks or that lock specifically. It does look like cheap and shitty device no one should use.

I subbed after the second video and i remembered a video of a lock i saw some time ago which i thought was very interesting, namely this one: th-cam.com/video/1ey2SFHbZV8/w-d-xo.html Have you ever seen a lock like that before and if so have you managed to pick it? I also wonder if you have a video for beginners that explain all of the terms used in lockpicking and names of lock parts, tools and so on. And if not, could you maybe make one? :) Im looking forward to more videos! :)
