How to Study So You Never Forget

- Do you ever find when you're studying for your coding interviews that you spend all this time studying a data structure or algorithm only to forget it 2 days later?
You're putting so much work into your coding interview prep, but it feels like you're forgetting stuff as fast as you're learning it?
Chances are, you're suffering from Illusions of Competence. In other words, you think that you understand the topic better than you actually do.
In this video, I'm going to show you how to guarantee that every time you study a topic, you learn it for life. No more forgetting during your coding interview and no more uncertainty about whether all the time you spend studying is worth it.

1. Re-create the solution after study
2. Re-visit the stuff once a week
A good way to understand things is by trying to explain them to yourself. When you find it difficult to explain a concept you SHOULD BE understanding, it's usually a sign that you skipped some important part when you learned it the first time. It's also a good way to instantly discover gaps in your knowledge. And more often than not, the benefit of these discoveries are transferable, meaning you will be able to see other problems clearer, because you just came to a better understanding of a concept that is fundamental to several areas of knowledge.
Absolutely. This is a super common variant on this strategy that also works really well. The one reason why I like the slightly more structured approach is that it's easy to gloss over things while explaining them to yourself so it's important that you be really honest with yourself if you take that route
+1 on what you said. Personally, I find when I try to teach someone a concept I recently learned I still fall into the trap of illusion of competence b/c sometimes I feel like I'm just reciting what I heard or read. So to prevent that I try to explain it my own way, with my own experience/connection, etc that's diff than the explanation/example given from what you just watch or read.
makes sense.
I was learning merge sort and was searching TH-cam how do I remember everything and not forget, clicked on the first video and you are talking about merge sort. Its like you read my mind.
Great video.
tl;dr - When you're learning something new, just because what you're learning makes sense doesn't mean that it's internalized or that you can regurgitate it when needed. Thinking that seeing something and it making sense in the moment is getting a topic down is an 'illusion of confidence.' Therefore, you need to employ 'recall' techniques that involve reviewing the information, immediately looking away from the information, and then recall/recreate all you've just learned the best you can.
-*"illusion of competence"*
-*Recalling* is also a good way which is something i would do whenever i'm bored
-*Write down what you studied* , yeah this is a good way too i agree. Also if you're stuck try to find out what the problem is
-*Repeating the processes*
Overall, this video is very helpful and it deepens my knowledge on how to study! All I can say is great video and thank you very much! Much appreciated!
Okay you finally convinced me to take the leap on that "Learning how to learn" course, been eyeing it for a while.
It's worth it
Awesome! It's definitely worthwhile if you're interested in learning more of the science and going deeper
Please can you share the course bro?
This is next level game! I'm aiming to get offeres from Facebook, Google and Netflix. Wish me luck !
You got this!
Bro if you ever make it and I hope you do
Please let me know what were your procedures..
Did you get it?
All the Best 👍🏻👍🏻

I have difficulties in remembering what I had learned so this video really helped me out!😃
another book that goes way deeper into the science of learning is called Make it Stick. Highly recommend if you're into this topic!
DUDE you literally saved me with my maths and physics exams!!!!
Wow!! What an amazing video. I didn’t know I was implementing this method!
Oh man, your knowledge is very deep and, every single word you're saying is pure gold!
I'm currently reading your PDF guide and, I can't thank you enough buddy :)

Glad to hear it. Definitely aiming for weekly videos from now on
Recall sounds like a great way
I only forget the things, who are boring for me,and I don't have interest in them.
On some Class like "Science" I Remember what i study but when it comes to history class my brain became Forgetful for some reason
thanks a lot this one is gonna work for me forever whatever am study from today is just a walk over

Title is a bit misleading. You can definitely understand the precise nuances and also the general concepts of some theory etc, but given enough time, you've forgotten how or why certain parts of it are done. Recollection through understanding is possible only if the topic supplies enough logically connected footholds. Some topics have tons of brute facts and must be treated differently. Certainly if you actually understood a topic then relearning it is faster provided you have access to similar levels of instruction... However, I thought this video would instead illuminate a great practice for keeping things for life: *After fully understanding it, record video lectures of you teaching yourself the concept for future review. Explain the steps, the why, the flow, etc. These can be reviewed whenever you need to jump back into it, and will make everything far more accessible.* Collect these instructional explanations and build up a library of them. Rust is real, developing strategies to ward off their effects and smooth reintroduction to long lost ideas is a solid approach.
>>> After fully understanding it, record video lectures of you teaching yourself... build up a library of them
This is a great idea. I think the only nit push back I have is recording yourself and storing the mp4 can be "expensive." So still with the same idea maybe just build a library of notes (pics/diagram/links etc) of you explaining the concept to a 5 years old.
excellent. can relate to what you have just said.!!
This is great even tho I’m applying this to my NASM CPT Exam! Thanks!
Thank you for the advice professor
When u want to learn something and u feel u understand it and the things u are learn make sense to you. It mean that u are able to reconstructe it and ingrave it to your brain. It's like u are preparing yourself to teach it , and u should teache it so u can remember it(recall)
NB: re-write what u learn in your own way
When u learn something and u finished it ,and know u are in the step to recall, u need to go through what u learn, if all goes and u remember everything that's great, if not u need to identify the problem where u stopped and don't understand, study it then solve it. And on and on. ITS like u are only studying the PROBLEM , and not learning about EVERYTHING
NB: revise,stuck,identify,study,solve,again♻️
CLOSE THE BOOK, RECALL, RECREATE
OBJECTIVE: Avoiding illusive confidence(convincing ur self that u understand ).I should work on CREATING then understanding (only consuming)
If u learn something comebback to it every week it will not take too long ,and as u do it more often it will be just like refreshing ur memory, rather than relearning everything
Great video !! I relate to this a lot.
Glad to hear it!
Great advice! Thanks a lot.
Useful tips !!!❤you for these valuable hacks.

Assuming you're a programmer or aspiring to be one is to think of it as a while loop :-) Check out the function to avoid the illusion of competence below.
def avoid_illusion_of_competence(what_I_want_to_understand):
comprehend = false
specific_area_I_dont_understand = what_I_want_to_understand
while (!comprehend):
study(specific_area_I_dont_understand)
close_notes()
specific_area_I_dont_understand = recall_what_I_learn(specific_area_I_dont_understand) # if I recall everything return null else return a NEW specific area I don't understand
if (specific_area_I_dont_understand):
comprehend = false
else:
comprehend = true
Very impactful!
Thanks :)
loved it thanks very much...this works
Thank you soooooooo much great tips 💫💙
this really make sense
Obrigada pela aula !! Simplesmente maravilhosa
thank uu sir!!! ur GOAT
By going back to it once a week, do you mean re reading it or recalling it ????
thank you good idea
Mental block during tests or exams is my biggest enemy
Sir will u please help me from the basics....of coding
Okay so the funny thing is I literally was reading merge sort from a textbook and that too on a weekend xD
what tool is good to RECALL?

IS THERE SOLUTINION TO THAT
great tip
Good one
Appreciate 🖤
Thanks master!
Haha you're welcome :)
That's the thing about learning something but what about memorizing something especially when your major is mostly related to maths but at some point you need to memorize at least some parts and you're having so much trouble recalling every single word in a sentence, What about that?
If you find any material let me know.. Thanks
Great as usual :)
Thanks Hamid :)
How much of this is based on memorization?
U r talking about problem sloving
awesome tip
Me watching a video to learn how to remember, only for my ass to not remember how to remember
Best one
@byte by byte
video starts at 4:30
even if I do this technique, I will still forget after a while
Illusions of confidence.
Keep revisiting the same problems at least 1x a week. This is spaced repetition which will strength that long-term memory
Mind mapping
you can only recreate minutes after the study ............and only fail after 30 minutes
Awesome byte 👍🏻
thanks!
Thank you for the information broo,,,but will you also do a video on abroad studies please broo
Not my area of expertise, but does seem like an interesting topic to cover!
Thank you for your response sir,, please do it,,it will be helpful for the students like me who want to study abroad and Now I am studying CSE 3rd year from India and I want to pursue my masters in us or uk
Hey Sam! Looks like you’re taking requests :-D Would be really great if you could cover GitHub profile optimisation and tracking detailed metrics / measuring impact, if that’s even possible. For example, this video by a recruiter covers how THEY use the GitHub as a “honey hole” (not my words) to troll for Developers: th-cam.com/video/lvpByue1M4E/w-d-xo.html methinks this can be optimised for, but I’m not smart enough to come up with a comprehensive strategy.
Its feynman technique
I can't talk english well
Can you typing the steps
What language do you speak
stuck = you.do_problem() # returns boolean if you are stuck or not
if stuck:
you.read_solution()
while you.reproduce_solution_from_scratch() != False:
you.identify_area_of_lack_of_understanding()
you.try_again()
nostalgia
Legit forgetting everything that I’m learning for finals in Med school 🥲
