I love this technique. I've spent hours installing fiberglass. Hated it. Tedious and itchy while I have my misgivings about how well it performs. This stuff sticks tight and is firm. Even rats would have a hard go of it. Fiberglass is a perfect home for rats and mice. Especially under a trailer home.
Inspecting a friend's attic the fiberglass insulation was matted down by rats, cats and and mice. Filled with feces. What a mess to clean out and replace.
hi everyone ,if anyone else wants to uncover container home designs plans try Jadonite Shipping Container Buddy ( search on google ) ? Ive heard some extraordinary things about it and my buddy got excellent success with it.
You should tape those black vents together.. everytime he sprayed at a seam, it went behind the black vent, which probably expanded just enough to close off the ventilation air way from the soffit to ridge vent
Nice neat job by the technician.... Plus he is laying thin layers at a time.... That way you will be assured there will be no uncured foam that remains in liquid state., which could off gas forever.. Seems the liquid chemicals used to make the foam are relatively unsafe to breathe in liquid form.... But become harmless after the chemical reaction has taken place and turned the liquid into a solid foam core... As in a Styrofoam cup we drink coffee out of.... But what do I know anyway? I slept at a Holiday Inn last night.
+mrpearl1 Actually it sounds to me like you know quite a bit. You know more than the majority of these commenters. And yes I have sprayed foam before. :)
Finally, 1 guy that knows what the hell he is doing. So many houses have been destroyed by so-called professionals but this is the first 1 I see. But still, I would recommend not using spray foam insulation. If only that it looks horrible. Glasswool and place some boards over it for a much cleaner look.
If 1/8 of spacing between roof sheeting is required by code to release preasure from the attic during storms how is it code compliant to seal off what the code calls for
open cell foam gives you breathability and insulation in one system . if you use it with a breatheable roof membrane any water vapour entering the roof void can pass through the OC foam and then out through your permeable roof membrane
Does cutting it decrease efficiency? I was told that I need 5 inches and cutting it brings it below 4? Thank you I just want to make sure my job is done right!

Yes - open cell has positive acoustic properties - We have sprayed a recording studio and commercial buildings including a large dog pound that wanted to cut down on dog barking sounds at night. Worked a treat.
Thanks - I get a lost of inquiries from the States for reciprocating sawzall saw blades and equip .Please post a link if you stock these - I don't have a dog in this fight
Unfortunately, we do not. We distribute polyurethane equipment such as; proportioners, spray guns, hoses, drum heaters, rig building, trainiing, etc. www.sprayworksequipment.com
Why would you ever leave an air space behind the foam? According to everything I have read and studied this will only create problems. The air space is to allow moisture to dry and have a place to go. With foam against the plywood there will be no moisture to vent. What is the logic or thought here? I am interested to hear why.
+mfmanuele We are required by building code in Ireland to put in this spacer . Lots of disagreement over its use , but hey I dont write the rules - Thanks for the comment :-)
There should be a vented air gap between the insulation and the exterior sheathing. Here is a video where the guy that helps right the codes give the reason. He can say it better than I. th-cam.com/video/Ld8pzIu45F8/w-d-xo.html
So, what about in Southern California? We have little rain, humidity is relatively low most of the year. Maybe skip the air space and spray directly against a plywood roof sheath?
Elamar - we hate waste also - we bag the trimmings on site, always and many customer use the offcuts as additional insulation in other voids in their roofs, crawls spaces and floor joist cavities - so it's not always wasted . If anyone has a good idea on recycling foam trimmings I'm all ears ?
You could possible run the excess insulation through a wood chipper or something similar. That way, it would be a very fine material that could be used in ceilings or attics. Just a thought :)
fusioninsulation The little waste of insulation is minor compared to energy loss from other poor insulations. I’m more interested in where you got that saw blade! Love the results of this job.
Do you need the black paper attached before spraying? Was that applied for the the foam? I talked to a professional and he never mentioned applying a black paper.
Davian - the black paper system is a spacer card that we have to fit in Irish roofs under local regulations - It's a bit of an anomaly in terms of regulation as for example if you fit Icynene foam in Ireland you don't have to fit it but if you spray all the other certified foams you do (even though they are all pretty much identical open cell foams ) - go figure
You can, but no matter what color you dye it it will always want to yellow. Your best bet is to paint it. Even corbon's purple foam turns an ugly lime green color after a year of lite uv exposure.
is that saran wrap over his mask? good idea! or is it something els. Its a pain having to spray flush with joists, lots of wasted material ends up on the floor. is that just a sawsall with a long saw attachment?
Look up open cell foam insulation for the one in this video. Typically 3.5 - 4 per inch on the half pound psqft. Closed cell (2 lb psqft) 6.5 - 7 per inch
+Samuel Lagos Most major foam equipement sellers in the states sell blades www.sprayfoamequipment.com/foam-saw-blades.html sprayfoamequipmentmfg.com/parts-and-equipment.htm Hope that helps buddy ;-)
Sheet insulation is okay I guess . You have to allow for 5-7% wastage , cut each sheet individually and then they are not airtight so you have to buy dozens and dozens (I've seen hundreds of cans used on big jobs) of DIY foam cans to caulk the sheets to make them airtight ....and you have to project manage and QC all that . Getting us in takes just 1 phone call and we clean up after us .
That looks like a p2 gun to me. Not a fusion. Your spray technic is a good way to make bad foam in a hurry. 1 inch minimum lifts at a time. Its a chemical reaction which requires the heat of the foam to react properly
unbelieveable how many people think the right thing to do is gob a ton on at one time, heat is the enemy here, all it takes is one mistake to end up with a runaway endothermic reaction that will ruin a house
+consaka1 you also need enough heat for a proper chemical reaction. Less than an inch does not produce enough exothermic heat to make good plastic. Some foams you can't spray more than 2 inch lift without problems, but you still need more than 1. Some newer good foams will do 3 inches plus without issues. All still require a minimum thickness to get a proper exothermic reaction. Really small lifts also give you shitty yields, to top it.
Christopher Gruenwald I have done this before so why are you telling me? This guy is doing the job properly and doing an excellent job controlling the heat. you don't want too much heat or too little heat.
+Grezzy42 As we mentioned we're spraying half pound open cell foam here not 2lb . You'd struggle to cut 2lb this easy . I'm not saying that cutting off overspray is the most efficient use of foam but customers demand it so that is what we do for them . As the old adage goes 'Whats the first function of any business ? To create a satisfied customer"
Wow..this is a slow way to spray...I would spray one cavity a 5 inches in one pass..skip one cavity then spray the next..I would cut the cavity wher I wouldn't have the foam in my way..then go back a spray the cavity I skipped

John Knoefler Mice, rats, bugs & virtually all rodents avoid the spray foam.they will not eat through it,so it is a saviour in more than one way.
John Knoefler i had an animal trying to get into my loft the other day and I sealed it with foam and it's given up now so it's excellent stuff

This is one of those "satisfying " videos.. I could watch that foam being trimmed, all day ahhhhhh
You should tape those black vents together.. everytime he sprayed at a seam, it went behind the black vent, which probably expanded just enough to close off the ventilation air way from the soffit to ridge vent

Hello guys,
is that home made blade?
Could you give some more info about it.
Regards
That's perfect. If I had foaming done Id want the cavity full. Those that leave gaps are NOT maximizing the insulation value.
peterincgy open cell foam is done this way. closed cell is left just shy of the interior of the rafters, due to difficulty of trimming.
Great video demonstrating the overall process

where do you get those extra long reciprocating saw blades?
That's the same question I had
This is a cool video... I thought that you shouldn't spray ever still wet foam. Something about fish smells and not curring correctly.
I'm taking this has a lot of benefits
open cell foam gives you breathability and insulation in one system . if you use it with a breatheable roof membrane any water vapour entering the roof void can pass through the OC foam and then out through your permeable roof membrane
What do they do with the cut off's? I it recyclable?
since I am in the states, what brand foam is this? I may have to try this myself.
While the R index of that new wall will be huge, what of the concrete block wall nearby?
Quality work right there.
this seems really helpful, where can I get this?! how much does it cost?!,
Im watching this because its really hot in miami and im dreaming of having all that foam
i could watch this forever
What are you using to form the air channel between the insulation and underside of roof deck?
Is it flammable ?
not once it's cured. It's actually fairly fire retardant.
I don't think its highly flammable product, but if the house is on fire either spray foam or normal isolation will survive
very very good job how much machine end materials???????

did you have to buy it from the states or is there a uk or europe based company
I am new to this insulation thing, I need to install something into a metal shed 20X40 with raised four inch rails inside what do you think?
Is this foam hard too cut into in case of plumbing problems
have you ever tried to mix that kind of foam with another fireprooof material?
Is der any chemical which can melt dis foam ??????plz ans
What is necessary insulation for a home on pillars.
Would you spray foam it then sheath it with a r_3 foam board on the underside joists ?
Probably the other way around - fit the foam boards in a warm roof construction and then spray foam oto same - ideal combination
can this foam be used to do the ceiling joist in an attic space as well or is it only used roof/slate side?
Yes ceiling joists can be easily sprayed
Why not used closed cell?
You could use closed cell . In this case open cell was preferred as it's breatheable and cheaper when compared mm to mm or inch to inch
How much does this cost for a 1,300 sq ft home?
